This paper describes the use of coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Rigid Body Dynamics (RBD) in modelling the aerodynamic behaviour of wind-borne plate type objects. Unsteady 2D and 3D Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) CFD models are used to simulate the unsteady and non-uniform flow field surrounding static, forced rotating, auto-rotating and free-flying plates. The auto-rotation phenomenon itself is strongly influenced by vortex shedding, and the realisable k-epsilon turbulence modelling approach is used, with a second order implicit time advancement scheme and equal or higher order advection schemes for the flow variables. Sequentially coupling the CFD code with a RBD solver allows a more detailed modelling of the Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) behaviour of the plate and how this influences plate motion. The results are compared against wind tunnel experiments on auto-rotating plates and an existing 3D analytical model.

A three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes solver, KFLOW, using overlapped grids has recently been developed to simulate unsteady flow phenomena over helicopter rotor blades. The blade-vortex interaction is predicted for a descending flight using measured blade deformation data. The effects of computational grid resolution and azimuth angle increments on airloads were examined, and computed airloads and vortex trajectories were compared with HART-II wind tunnel data. The current method predicts the BVI phenomena of blade airloads reasonably well. It is found from the present study that a peculiar distribution of vorticity of tip vortices in an approximate azimuth angle range of 90 to 180 degrees can be explained by physics of the shear-layer interaction as well as the dissipation of numerical schemes.
This paper presents a study of the effects of the free surface to marine propeller including the mesh effect of the models. In the present study, we conduct the numerical simulation for propeller performance employing the openwater test. The numerical simulations compare the meshing strategies for the propeller and show the effects on both thrust and torque. OpenFOAM is applied to solve the propeller problem and then open water performances of KCS propeller (KP505) are estimated using a Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) solver and the turbulence of the $K-{\omega}$ SST model. Unstructured meshes are used in the numerical simulation employing hexahedral meshing for mesh generation. The arbitrary mesh interfacing (AMI) and multiple rotating frame (MRF) are compared to define the best meshing strategy. The meshing strategies are evaluated through 3 classifications, i.e., coarse, medium, and fine mesh. Thus, the propeller can be performed utilizing the best mesh strategy. The computational results are validated by comparison with the experimental results. The $K_T$, $K_Q$, and efficiency of the propeller are compared to an experimental result and for all of the meshing strategies. Thus, the simulations show the influence of meshing in order to perform the propeller performances.
The performance analysis of a fuel pump for a liquid rocket engine has been performed numerically on its design condition. A commercial three-dimensional Navier-Stokes flow solver has been used for the computation. All of the fuel pump components - inducer, impeller, volute and secondary flow passages - are included in computation for the accurate estimation of the leakage flow rate which affects the performance and axial thrust. A pitchwise-averaged mixing plane method was used on the boundaries among the fuel pump components to save computational time. The predicted overall performance satisfied the design requirement. However, the axial thrust exceeded a permissible limit. In order to reduce the axial thrust, the secondary flow passage design has been changed. With this change, the axial thrust level has been reduced to 30% as compared with the original value.
Viscous solutions of supersonic jet impinging on a flat plate normal to the flow are simulated using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. The jet impinging flow structure exhibits such complex nature as shock shell, plate shock and Mach disk depending on the flow parameters. Among others, the dominant parameters are the ratio of the nozzle exit pressure to the ambient pressure and the distance between the nozzle exit plane and the impinging plane. In the present study, the nozzle contour and the pressure ratio are held fixed, while the jet impinging distance is varied to illuminate the characteristics of the jet plume with the distance. As the plate is placed close to the nozzle at 3D high, the computed wall pressure at or near the jet center oscillates with large amplitude with respect to the mean value. Here D is the nozzle exit diameter. The amplitude of wall pressure fluctuations subsides as the distance increases, but the maximum mean pressure level at the plate is achieved when the distance is about 4D high. The frequency of the wall pressure is estimated at 6.0 kHz, 9.3 kHz, and 10.0 kHz as the impinging distance varies from 3D, 4D, to 6D, respectively.
The complex, unsteady, self-sustained pressure oscillations induced by supersonic flow past a rectangular cavity is investigated using numerical simulations. The present numerical study is performed using a parallel, multiblock solver for the two-dimensional, compressible NavierStokes equations. Open cavities with length-to-depth (L / D) ratio in the range 0.5 - 3.3 are considered. This paper sheds light on the cavity physics, cavity oscillatory mechanism, and the organisation of vortical structures inside the cavity. The vortex shedding phenomenon, the shear layer impingement event at the aft wall and the movement of the acoustic/compression wave within the cavity are well predicted. The vortical structures· and the source of the acoustic disturbances are found to be located near the aft wall of the cavity. With the increase in the cavity length, strong recompression of the flow near the aft wall leading to a sudden jump in the cavity form drag is observed. The estimated cavity tones are in good agreement with the available semiempirical relation. Multiple peaks are noticed in deep and long cavities. For the present freestream Mach number 1.71, it is observed that around L/D=2.0, the cavity oscillatory mechanism changes from the transverse to longitudinal oscillatory mode. The effects of this transition on various fluid dynamics and acoustic properties are also discussed.

The purpose of this 3-D numerical simulation is evaluate the application of a commercial CFD code to predict 3-D flow and power characteristics of wind turbines. The experimental approach, which has been main method of investigation, appears to be its limits, the cost increasing with the size of the wind turbines, hence mostly limited to observing the phenomena on rotor blades. Therefore, the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques and Navier-Stokes solvers are considered a very serious contender. The flow solver CFX-TASCflow is employed in all computations in this paper. The 3-D flow separation and the wake distribution of 2 and 3 bladed Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs) are compared to Heuristic model and smoke-visualized experimental result by NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory). Simulated 3-D flow separation structure on the rotor blade is very similar to Heuristic model and the wake structure of the wind turbine is good consistent with smoke-visualized result. The calculated power of the 3 bladed rotor by CFD is compared with BEM results by TV-Delft. The CFD results of which is somewhat consist with BEM results, under an error less than 10%.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the prediction accuracy of development large eddy simulation(LES) program for turbulent flow behind a bluff-body. The LES solver was implemented on parallel computer consisting 16 processors. To verify the capability of LES code, the results were compared with those of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) using standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model as well as experimental data. The results showed that the LES and RANS qualitatively well predicted the experimental results, such as mean axial, radial velocities and turbulent kinetic energy. In the quantitative analysis, however, the LES showed a better prediction performance than RANS. Specially, the LES well described characteristics of the recirculation zones, such as air stagnation point and jet stagnation point. Finally, the unsteady phenomena on the Bluff-body, such as the transition of recirculation region and vorticity, was examined with LES methodology.
Flow characteristics of synthetic jet based flow supplying devices have been computationally investigated for different device shapes. Jet momentum was produced by the volume change of a cavity by two piezoelectric-driven diaphragms. The devices have additional flow path compared with the original synthetic jet actuator, and these flow path changes the flow characteristics of synthetic jet actuator. Four non-dimensional parameters, which were functions of the shapes of the additional flow path, were considered as the most critical parameters in jet performance. Comparative studies were conducted to compare volume flow rate and jet velocity. Computed results were solved by 2-D incompressible Navier-Stokes solver with k-w SST turbulence model. Detailed computations revealed that the additional flow path diminishes suction strength of the synthetic jet actuator. In addition, the cross section area of the flow path has more influence over the jet performances than the length of the flow path. Based on the computational results, the synthetic jet based flow supplying devices could be improved by applying suitable shape of the flow path.
