Suppressing NF-κB/Caspase-1 Activation is a Mechanism Involved in the Anti-inflammatory Effect of Rubi Fructus in Stimulated HMC-1 Cells

  • Inflammation plays an important role in immune system's response to tissue injury and biological stimuli. However, excessive inflammation can cause tissue damage. Therefore, the development of naturally derived anti-inflammatory agents have received broad attention. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory mechanism of Rubi Fructus (RF) extract on the mast cell-mediated inflammatory response. To determine the regulatory mechanism of RF in inflammatory reaction, we evaluated the effects of RF on secretion of interleukin (IL)-8, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and activation of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and caspase-1 in activated human mast cells-1 (HMC-1). The results showed that RF attenuated IL-8, IL-6 and TNF-α secretion in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, RF significantly attenuated caspase-1and NF-κB activation in activated HMC-1. Conclusively, the present results provide evidence that RF may be a promising agent for anti-inflammatory therapy.

Role of Diffusion-weighted MR Imaging in Children with Various Brain Pathologies

  • To exhibit our clinical experience of diffusion-weighted (DW) MR imaging for various brain pathologies and to determine its role in characterizing brain pathologies in children. DW images in 177 children (M:F=96:81, mean age, 4.7 years) with various brain pathologies were retrospectively collected over past 3 years. DW images (b value: 1000 s/mm) were reviewed along with corresponding apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps. Brain pathologies included cystic or solid brain tumor (n = 55), cerebral infarct (n = 32), cerebritis with or without brain abscess (n = 21), metabolic or toxic brain disorder (n = 19), demyelinating disease (n = 16), hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (n = 16), intracerebral hemorrhage including traumatic brain lesion (n = 15), and posterior reversible leukoencephalopathy (n = 3). We reviewed whether DW images and ADCmaps contribute to further characterization of brain pathologies by defining a chronological age of lesions, the presence of cytotoxic edema in lesions, and the nature of cystic lesions.

  • The link between upper airway disease (allergic rhinitis and sinusitis) and lower airway disease (asthma) has long been of interest to physicians. Many epidemiological and pharmacological studies have provided a better understanding of pathophysiologic interrelationship between allergic rhinitis and asthma. The vast majority of patients with asthma have allergic rhinitis, and rhinitis is a major independent risk factor for asthma in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. The association between sinusitis and asthma has long been appreciated. Through the recent evidences, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, and asthma may not be considered as different diseases but rather as the expression in different parts of the respiratory tract of same pathological process in nature. Various mechanisms have been proposed to explain the relationship between asthma and upper airway diseases, but the underlying mechanisms are not completely discovered. The implications for the one-airway hypothesis are important not only academically but also clinically for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.

  • The flavonoids from plants is very widly used as natural dye for food and medicine etc. In this study, red pine which is widespread in Korea was studied to find new chemicals which may use as raw material for the special purpose. The fIavonoids of red pine bark were separated with Sephadex LH-20 and Toyo pearl HW-40F as packed materials and the structure of separated f1avonoids was determined by $^1H$-and $^{13}C$-NMR spectroscopy. The (+) catechin which is widespread in nature and dihydroquercetin-3'-0-${\beta}$-galactoside were found in red pine bark. The dihydroquercetin-3'-0-${\beta}$-galactoside is newly found in this species.

Single and Dual Ligand Effects on Gene Expression Changes in Mouse Macrophage Cells

  • We identified differentially expressed genes in RAW264.7 cells in response to single and double ligand treatments (LPS, $IFN{\gamma}$, 2MA, LPS plus $IFN{\gamma}$, and LPS plus 2MA). The majority of the regulated transcripts responded additively to dual ligand treatment. However, a significant fraction responded in a non-additive fashion. Several cytokines showing non-additive transcriptional responses to dual ligand treatment also showed non-additive protein production/secretion responses in separately performed experiments. Many of the genes with non-additive responses to LPS plus 2MA showed enhanced responses and encoded pro-inflammatory proteins. LPS plus $IFN{\gamma}$ appeared to induce both non-additive enhancement and non-additive attenuation of gene expression. The affected genes were associated with a variety of biological functions. These experiments reveal both dependent and independent regulatory pathways and point out the specific nature of the regulatory interactions.

A Case of Cavitated Uterine Mass from Müllerian duct in a Mixed Breed Dog

  • This report describes a case of newly recognized congenital $M{\ddot{u}}llerian$ duct anomaly in a bitch. A fourteen-year-old, mixed breed bitch was presented with mild hematuria and mammary gland tumor. Complementary examinations were performed and abdominal ultrasonography revealed distended uterine horns and uterine tumor-like mass around the right ovarian area. Macroscopic examination showed the mass to be on the level of insertion of the right round ligament. The mass was cystic in nature, and had no communication with the uterine cavity. Histopathologically, the mass was identified as an accessory cavity lined by functional endometrium, which confirmed the diagnosis of accessory and cavitated uterine mass.

  • Non-tuberculous mycobacterium has a wide-spread occurrence in nature, and skin, soft tissue, bone, lung and disseminated infection can be involved. Non-tuberculous mycobacterium infection occurs both in immunocompetent patients without underlying diseases and in immunocompromised hosts. Non-tuberculous mycobactrial osteomyelitis is a rare cause of granulomatous osteomyelitis, and has been previously reported in the sternum, spine, humerus, femur, tibia or metatarsal. Mycobacterium abscessus osteomyelitis is a very rare infection in the foot and only 1 case has been reported. Authors report a case of Mycobacterium abscessus osteomyelitis involving the tarsal and metatarsal bones in a non-immunocompromized middle aged women.

  • Signal transduction through G protein-coupled receptors comprises three functional components, a receptor, a G protcin and a effector protein. Work over the last sevcral ycars has led to the characterization or virtually all of the components or these systems. what has come out or those studies is that these mechanisms of signal transduction are pervasive in nature being found in mammalian and avian species, as well as lower organisms such as yeast and slime mold. It is known that G protein-coupled receptors mediate the action of such diverse molecules such as small hormones and neurotransmitters, small peptide molecules as well as glycoprotein hormones and various sensory perceptions such as light, olfaction and most likely taste.

Conditions of kimchi to be safe from consuming viable Ascaris suum eggs (학술 2 - 김치에 함유된 돼지회충란의 사멸조건)

  • Livestock excretes are frequently used in organic farming to produce vegetables and crops. However, zoonotic parasite eggs can be contaminated into such products and people can be infected with parasites of animal origin. Sporadic zoonotic infections with Ascaris suum have been reported even in developed countries, such as North America, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. Ascaris eggs are resistant to most adverse environmental conditions, and pigs and humans become infected by ingestion of fecally excreted eggs through contaminated food, water, or soil. This article discusses the resistant nature of ascarid eggs against harsh environment, and conditions of kimchi to be safe from consuming viable A. suum eggs.

A Study on Food Therapy for Dermatological Diseases in Sikryochanyo (『식료찬요(食療纂要)』에 나타난 피부과 질환 식치(食治)에 대한 고찰)

  • Objectives : To examine food therapy for dermatological illnesses within their relationship with Pattern Identification and Treatment Discussion in "Sikryochanyo". Methods : Texts concerning dermatological conditions in "Sikryochanyo" were selected, followed by identifying each condition's pattern and treatment through examining each food ingredient's nature, flavor and main effect. Results : Each food ingredient such as eel, white sesame, duck meat, mallow, red beans, oyster, chicken meat, mung beans, female pig hooves, Chinese cabbage, venison, roe deer meat, kelp, seaweed, wheat, lappa fruit used to treat certain dermatological conditions could be categorized according to its properties in regulating Coldness, Heat, Deficiency, and Excessiveness of a given condition. Conclusions : When applying food ingredients to dermatological illnesses, Coldness, Heat, Deficiency, Excessiveness of the condition must be differentiated first for appropriate administration of food to the pattern that is being addressed.
