  • Carbon dioxide($CO_2$, R-744) has become a very popular issue in application to refrigeration and air conditioning systems as a natural refrigerant. An experimental study has been carried out to investigate the vapor pressure and miscibility of refrigerant R-744 in the presence of lubricant oil. This is of particular interest in the selection of the lubricant oil for the compressor of a refrigeration system or an air conditioning system using the refrigerant R-744. This apparatus consists of the test section, measuring devices, the vacuum pump, the constant temperature bath and relevant connecting pipes made of stainless steel. Two lubricant oils, such as mineral oil(Naphthenic) and polyol ester(POE) oil, are considered in the present study. For this purpose, test runs were conducted with the oil concentration range from 5 to 50 wt%, and the temperature range from -10 to $10^{\circ}C$ with $2^{\circ}C$ intervals. The results are correlated with the vapor pressure. and showed with the miscibility as visualization for the individual text components.

  • Experimental results for heat transfer characteristic and pressure gradient of HCs refrigerants R-290, R-600a, R-1270 and HCFC refrigerant R-22 during condensing inside horizontal double pipe heat exchangers are presented. The test sections which have one tube diameter of 12.70 mm with 0.86 mm wall thickness, another tube diameter of 9.52 mm with 0.76 mm wall thickness are used for this investigation. The local condensing heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were higher than those of R-22. The average condensing heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of the mass flux. It showed the higher values in hydrocarbon refrigerants than R-22. Hydrocarbon refrigerants have higher pressure drop than those of R-22 in 12.7 mm and 9.52 mm. This results from the investigation can be used in the design of heat transfer exchangers using hydrocarbons as the refrigerant for the air-conditioning systems.

The test sections which have one tube diameter of 12.70 mm with 0.89 mm, 9.52 mm with 0.76 mm, 6.35 mm with 0.13 mm wall thickness are used for this investigation, respectively. The local condensing heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were higher than those of R-22. The average condensing heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of the mass flux. It showed the higher values in hydrocarbon refrigerants than R-22. Hydrocarbon refrigerants have higher pressure drop than R-22 in 10.92 mm, 8 mm and 6.1 mm inner diameters. These results from the investigation can be used in the design of heat transfer exchangers using hydrocarbons as the refrigerant for the air-conditioning systems.

  • The development of sail gas has increased the production of ethane as well as natural gas. The decline in the market price for ethane has led to a change in the petroleum-based ethylene production process into an ethane-based ethylene production process and an increase in the ethane/ethylene trade volume. Large-scale ethane/ethylene carrier have been needed due to an increase in long-distance trade from the US, and cargo type change have leaded to consider a liquefaction process to re-liquefy Boil-Off gas generated during the voyage. In this paper, the liquefaction system of Liquefied Ethane Gas carrier was evaluated with Low-GWP (Low-Global Warming Potential) refrigerant and process parameters, Boil-Off Gas pressure and expansion valve outlet pressure, were optimized. Low-GWP refrigerants were propane (R290), propylene(R1270), carbon dioxide(R744) was considered at two type of liquefaction process such as Linde and cascade cycle. The results show that the optimal pressure point depends on the individual refrigerant and the highest liquefaction efficiency of carbon dioxide (R744) - propane (R290) refrigerant.

  • Recently, production and use of freon substances are restrained due to depletion of ozone layer and global warming. In this aspect of environmental problems, the best solution is to use the natural refrigerant such as ammonia. Thus, this study is to find the optimal operating conditions by comparing the performance between the shell and tube type and shell and disk type heat exchangers using the ammonia refrigerant, and to verify the superiority of the shell and disk type heat exchanger that is not used in field of refrigeration and air conditioning. Finally, this study shows that the shell and disk type heat exchanger is applicable to the ammonia refrigeration system, and this system minimizes the refrigerant charge and installation space.

Performance of Alternative Refrigerants for R12 and R134a in Automobile Air-Conditioners (자동차 공조기용 R12 및 R134a 대체 냉매의 성능평가)

  • In this study, natural refrigerants and their mixtures that can supplement and replace R12 and R134a in automobile air-conditioners are studied. R134a is currently used as the refrigerant in new motor vehicle air conditioners, replacing the ozone depleting refrigerant R12. Although R134a has no ozone depletion potential, it has a relatively large global warming potential, approximately 1300 times that of $CO_2$ over a 100 year time horizon. For this reason, performance of natural refrigerants and their mixtures containing R152a, RE170 (Dimethylether, DME) and R600a (Isobutane) are measured under 2 different temperature conditions. They were tested in a refrigerating bench tester with an open type compressor. The test bench provided about 4 kW capacity and water and water/glycol mixture were employed as the secondary heat transfer fluids. Test results show that the coefficient of performance (COP) of these refrigerants is up to 21.55% higher than that of R12 in all temperature conditions. Overall, these fluids provide good performance with reasonable energy savings without any environmental problem and thus can be used as long term alternatives for automobile air-conditioners.

  • Suction and discharge valves of special type refrigerant compressor are designed by finite element method for effective valve design development procedure. It is well known that valve dynamic characteristics, for example, the natural frequencies and vibration modes, are necessary for the computer simulation of compressor valve dynamics, the analysis of flow patterns, noise, impact stresses and their propagation phenomena. This paper has analysed the natural frequencies and vibration modes for the first three orders under the given special boundary conditions and the experiments are conducted by laser holography. And also stress distribution is analysed and experiment by strain gage is followed.

Evaporating heat transfer characteristics of R-22 alternative hydrocarbon refrigerants at heat exchanger using grooved inner tube (내면 핀관을 사용하는 열교환기에서 R-22 대체 탄화수소계 냉매의 증발 열전달 특성)

  • In this paper, evaporation heat transfer characteristics at a inner grooved tube were studied using a new natural refrigerants R-290, R-600a and HCFC refrigerant R-22. Experiments were performed in the inner tube with outside diameter of 12.70mm, having 75 fins with a fin height of 0.25mm. The following results were obtained from this research. On the evaporating heat transfer characteristics, the maximum increment of heat transfer coefficient was found in R-290. Average heat transfer coefficient was obtained the maximum value in R-290 and the minimum value in R-22. It reveals that the natural refrigerant can be used as a substitute for R-22. In the grooved inner tube, 70% of the increment of the heat transfer coefficient was obtained compared to the smooth tube. Comparing the heat transfer coefficient between experimental results and simulation data of other's, the Kandlikar's correlated equation was closely approximated to the author's experimental results in the smooth tube or grooved inner one.

  • A lot of research is being done to develop a high-efficiency heat pump to save energy. Among them, research to reduce or eliminate the phenomenon of frost occurring in the outdoor unit coil are being conducted at the same time. A constant temperature chamber that can be tested under the same conditions as natural conditions was constructed to conduct research that does not cause frost on the outdoor unit of the heat pump regardless of the season. The outdoor unit of the heat pump installed in the constant temperature chamber was simulated under the same natural conditions. As a result, it was confirmed that the mass flow rate of the refrigerant decreased as the outdoor temperature decreased, and the dryness of the refrigerant also increased linearly with the outdoor temperature.

  • Chracteristics on evaporating pressure drop of HCs refrigerants inside a horizontal tube were studied experimentally. Experimental results were presented for pressure drops of hydrocarbon refrigerants R-290, R-600a, R-1270 and HCFC refrigerant R-22 inside a horizontal double pipe heat exchanger. Three tubes with a tube diameter of 12.70mm, 9.52mm and 6.35mm were used for this study. Hydrocarbon refrigerants showed higher evaporating pressure drop than that of R-22 in all tubes. The highest pressure drop was founded in R-600a. The highest evaporating perssure drop of all refrigerants was shown in a tube diameter of 6.35mm with same mass flux. The results can be used as the basic data for the design of heat exchanger using hydrocarbon refrigerants as an alternatives.
