Physical Properties of Hybrid Poplar Flakeboard Bonded with Alkaline Phenolic Soy Adhesives

  • Soybean-based adhesives have recently been reconsidered as alternatives to petroleum-based adhesives due to the uncertainty of availability of petrochemical products and the increased demand for wood adhesives. This study was conducted to investigate the adhesive properties of alkaline phenolic soy (APS) resin for hybrid poplar flakeboard. The APS resin was formulated by crosslinking an alkaline soy flour hydrolyzate with lab-prepared PF resin in the soy hydrolyzate to PF resin weight ratios of 70/30, 60/40, and 50/50. The APS resins were used to fabricate homogeneous hybrid poplar flakeboards with different resin solid levels (5%, 7%, and 9%), press temperatures (175 and $200^{\circ}C$), and press times of 8 and 10 minutes. The IB, wet MOR, and dimensional stability properties of board improved with increasing press time, press temperature, and PF level in APS resins. Increasing press time can be used to offset poor IB strength associated with a 9% resin solid level and the excessive moisture content in the mat. The following conditions were concluded to meet the requirements of the CSA standard for exterior-grade flakeboard: a 50% PF level, a 5% resin content, a $200^{\circ}C$ press temperature, and an 8 minute press time.

Austria Koppler Moor에 서식하는 끈끈이주걱(Drosera rotundifolia)의 군란형성과 적응환경 (Community Composition and Adapted Environment of Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) in Koppler Moor, Austria)

  • At Koppl area, undamaged natural habitat of sundew, I have analysed interspecific affinities and community composition through mathematical method and important environmental factors. Interspecific affinities of the species with frequency of more than 5% in vegetation table were analysed through chi-square test and showed obvious group of Drosera rotundifolia, Vaccinium uliginosum, Calluna vulgaris, Eriophorum angustifolium and 21 species. The result of ordination anlysis using DECORANA of VESPAN II showed eigenvalue of 0.6047 for axis I, 0.2024 for axis II and 0.0763 for axis Ⅲ. And it divided into 4 groups of quadrat number 1-5 for Sphagnum squarrosum-community, 6-10 for Crepis paludosa-community. 11-25 for Carex panicea-community and 26-35 for Scorpidium scorpioides-community. By the classification using TWINSPAN, the 7 areas divided into 2 groups of 1-10 and 11-35 at first level of division with high eigenvalue of 0.588 and indicator was Sphagnum squarrosum. At second level of division it divided into 4 groups as the results of DECORANA with eigenvalues of 0.268 and 0.423 and indicators were Pinguicula vulgaris and Scorpidium scorpioides. Microclimatic environment of studied area was low in temperature and high in humidity and soil environment showed high in field moisture capacity, acid, high organic matter content, low NO3 and K2O content, compare to normal soil, and high ground water level.

Differences of Antioxidative Level in the Leaves and Seed Germinability among Five Natural Populations of Hibiscus hamabo

  • Variations in antioxidant capacity of leaves and characteristics of seed germination among five Hibiscus hamabo populations in Korea were evaluated. While the leaves of H. hamabo from Shincheon contained highest Na concentration, those from Hado and Ohzo does lowest. MDA content and SOD activity didn't show significant difference among populations, but total protein and anthocyanin content were significantly different among five populations. The filled seed rates of five populations were ranged from 92.0 to 98.7%, and the moisture contents of seeds from Shinyang and Soando were lower than that of R. syriacus (5.18%). The fresh weights of H. hamabo from Hado and Ohzo were the highest and those of seeds from Shinyang and Soando were the lowest. Significant variations among H. hamabo populations were detected for all seed germination characters: percentage of germination, average germination time and germination rate and uniformity. SOD activities of seeds from Onpyoung and Soando were the highest of five populations, and total protein concentrations of seeds in Ohzo and Shinyang populations were higher than those of other populations. H. hamabo is considered exposed to salt stress and all characteristics of seed germinations were inferior to other species.

천연산 및 양식산 뱀장어, 복어, 가물치의 맛 성분에 대한 연구 (Comparison of The Taste Compounds of Wild and Cultured Eel, Puffer and Snake head)

  • In this study, eel, puffer and snake head fish, which are widely taken and highly valued for processing into baked fish, soup or fish juice were studied by classifying them into wild fish and cultured fish, and evaluated in terms of taste. The samples were gathered in the area including Kimhae, Samchonpo and Haman in Kyungsangnam-do, Kangsu-Gu in Pusan and Bukcheju-Gun in Cheju-do. Proximate compositions, the content of nucleotides and their related compounds, total and free amino acids, organic acids and fatty acids of the fishes were analysed. Generally, as for the compositions, wild fish had a higher crude fat content and a lower moisture content as compared with cultured fish, while there was no great difference between them in terms of crude protein and ash contents. Nucleotides and their related compounds including ATP, ADP, AMP, IMP, HxR, Hx were detected, and the amounts of which were nearly the same with respect to the growth conditions. IMP content was high in all of the samples, while ATP content was extremely low. Total 17 amino acids were detected from the samples, and most of the samples had high contents of glutamic acid, aspartic acid, lysine, leucine, glycine, alanine and arginine, and low contents of cystein, isoleucine and methionine. As for the other amino acids, generally same level of contents were detected for each samples. In cases of eel and snake head fish, the wild fish had higher total amino acid contents in comparison with cultured fish. And the result to the contrary was obtained for the case of puffer. Sample fishes had nearly the same compose distribution of free amino acid though the contents of which were a little different according to the samples. Each sample had high contents of taurine, hydroxyproline, glutamic acid, glycine, cystathionine, ${\beta}-aminoisobutyric$ acid and lysine. Total organic acid contents of cultured fish was higher than that of wild fish. All fishes commonly had high contents of lactic acid, iso-valeric acid, oxalic acid and fumaric acid. High levels of $C_{16:0},\;C_{16:1},\;C_{18:1(cis)},\;C_{18:3},\;and\;C_{22:6}$ were shown in all of the samples and ${\omega}-3$ polyunsaturated fatty acid content of cultured fish was higher than that of wild fish, and as for the essential fatty acid, wild fish has higher content in comparison with cultured fish.

Koji를 첨가하여 발효한 오징어 내장 조미료의 품질특성 (Quality Properties of Fermented Squid Viscera Product with Aspergillus oryzae Koji and Its Seasoning)

  • 본 연구는 오징어 가공부산물인 내장에 koji를 첨가하여 속성 발효한 천연조미료 소재 개발을 목적으로 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 휘발성 염기질소량과 trimethylamine은 대조군이 가장 급격하게 증가하였고, 식염이 많이 첨가될수록 서서히 증가하였다. pH는 대조군이 가장 급격한 변화를 보였으며, 식염이 많이 첨가될수록 pH의 변화량이 적었다. 반면, 산도는 pH 감소와 반비례하여 증가하였다. 아미노질소는 식염 5% 첨가군이 가장 짧은 기간에 최고값을 나타내었으며, 식염 10, 15% 첨가군은 식염 5% 첨가군과 비슷한 값을 보였으나 발효기간이 길어 적합하지 않았다. 따라서 이상의 결과를 고려할 때, 식염 5% 첨가군이 조미료를 만들기에 가장 적합하다고 판단하였다. 식염 5%의 농도에 14일 간 발효시킨 오징어 내장 발효생성물의 일반성분은 조단백이 가장 많았으며, 유리아미노산 조성은 단맛을 내는 아미노산인 alanine과 감칠맛을 내는 아미노산인 glutamic acid의 함량이 가장 많았다. 항산화와 항대장암 활성은 농도 의존적으로 증가하는 것을 확인하였으나, positive control에 비하여 활성이 떨어졌다. 관능검사 결과는 시판 천연조미료와 비교하여 관능적으로 큰 차이가 없었다. 이상의 결과를 고려할 때 오징어 내장 발효생성물은 천연조미료 등 식품첨가제로써 활용이 가능하다고 판단된다.

방사선(放射線) 조사(照射)와 자연저온(自然低溫)에 의한 마늘의 저장 (Batch Scale Storage of Garlic by Irradiation Combined with Natural Low Temperature)

  • 방사선(放射線) 조사(照射)와 자연저온(自然低溫)에 의한 마늘의 상업적(商業的) 저장법(貯藏法) 개발(開發)을 목표(目標)로 수확후(收穫後) 1개월(個月)된 시료(試料)에 $^{60}Co\;{\gamma}-$선(線)을 50, 100 및 150Gy 조사(照射)시킨 뒤 자연저온(自然低溫) 저장고(貯藏庫) $(12{\pm}6^{\circ}C,\;75{\sim}85%RH)$에 10개월(個月) 동안 저장(貯藏)하면서 이화학적(理化學的) 특성(特性)을 검토(檢討)하였다. 비조사구(非照射區)는 저장(貯藏) 8개월(個月) 후(後)에 대부분 발아(發芽)되었으나 조사구(照射구區)는 저장(貯藏) 10개월(個月) 까지도 전혀 외부 발아(發芽)되지 않았다. 저장(貯藏) 10개월(個月) 후(後) 부패율(腐敗率)은 비조사구(非照射區)가 83.56%, 조사구(照射區)가 약(約) 29%로 ${\gamma}-$선(線) 조사(照射)로서 54%의 부패율(腐敗率)을 감소(減少)시킬 수 있었고, 중량변화(重量變化)에 있어서도 ${\gamma}-$선(線) 조사(照射)에 의하여 약(約) 25%의 감량(減量)을 막을 수 있었다. 저장중(貯藏中) 수분함량(水分含量)은 큰 변화(變化)가 없었으나 발아(發芽)와 더불어 다소 감소(減少)되었고, 전당(全糖)과 환원당(還元糖)은 저장기간(貯藏期間)의 경과로 각각 증감현상(增減現象)이 나타났으며, 특(特)히 발아(發芽)가 왕성(旺盛)한 이듬해 3월(月)부터는 그 변화(變化)가 두드러졌다. 또한 ascorbic acid 함량(含量)은 기간(期間)의 경과로 점차 감소(減少)하다가 발아(發芽)와 더불어 증가(增加)되었다. 따라서 수확후(收穫後) 마늘에 100Gy 정도의 ${\gamma}$-선(線)을 조사(照射)하여 $10^{\circ}C$ 내외(內外)의 자연저온(自然低溫) 저장고(貯藏庫)에 저장(貯藏)함으로써 그 품질(品質)을 비교적(比較的) 우수(優秀)하게 10개월(個月) 이상(以上) 보존(保存)할 수 있었다.

증발스트레스지수를 활용한 국내 돌발가뭄 감지 (Detection of flash drought using evaporative stress index in South Korea)

  • 가뭄은 수개월, 수년 이상에 걸쳐 서서히 발생 및 지속되며, 식생에 대한 피해가 발생할 때까지 확실한 인식이 어렵다. 최근에는 기후변화에 따른 기상이변 및 기온상승 등으로 인하여 가뭄의 발생빈도가 증가하고 있으며, 기상 이상으로 몇 주 또는 몇 달 이내 빠르게 발전하는 가뭄을 확인할 수 있다. '돌발가뭄(Flash Drought)은 일반적인 가뭄과 달리 비교적 짧은 기간 동안 표면온도의 상승과 비정상적으로 낮고 빠르게 감소하는 토양수분으로 인하여 식생에 대한 극심한 스트레스를 유발하면서 광범위한 작물 손실 및 용수공급 감소 등에 대한 피해를 야기하는 가뭄으로 정의된다. 짧은 기간의 급속하게 발생하는 (rapid-onset) 돌발가뭄은 발생원인인 토양수분함량의 감소와 강수의 부족, 낮은 습도, 고온 및 강풍 등으로 인한 증발 수요의 증가 등과 유사한 관계가 있기 때문에 농업 및 자연 생태계에 미치는 영향이 크며, 발생원인 또한 농업가뭄의 범주에 속하기 때문에 이에 대한 모니터링이 필수적이다. 본 연구에서는 증발산량을 활용한 위성영상 기반 가뭄지수인 증발스트레스지수(Evaporative Stress Index, ESI)를 활용하여 국내의 돌발가뭄 감지 조건을 제시하였으며, 표준강수지수, 토양수분, 최고기온, 상대습도, 풍속, 강수량 등과 비교를 통하여 돌발가뭄사상의 수문기상학적 특성에 대하여 분석하였다. 돌발가뭄 발생 이전 8주간을 기준으로 상관분석하였으며, ESI와 표준강수지수, 토양수분, 최고기온에 대하여 0.8(-0.8) 이상의 높은 상관관계를 보였다. 본 연구를 통하여 아직 명확하게 정의되지 않은 돌발가뭄에 대한 유형별 분석 및 국내 돌발가뭄의 수문기상학적 특성을 파악하였으며, 위성영상 기반 가뭄지수인 증발스트레스지수는 돌발가뭄사상의 모니터링에 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

벼의 자연통풍건조에 있어서 통풍량이 건조에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on Effects of Air-delivery Rate upon Drying Rough Rice with Unheated Air.)

  • An experimental work was conducted by using a laboratory-made model dryer to investigate the effect of the rate of natural forced-air on the drying rate of rough rice which was deposited in the deep-bed. The dryer consisted of 8 cylinderical containers with grain holding screen at their bottoms, each of which having 30cm in diameter and 15cm in height. The containers were sacked vertically with keeping them air-tight by using paper tape during dryer operation. Two separate layers of containers were operated in the same time to have two replications. The moisture contents of grains within each bins after predetermined period of dryer operation were determined indirectly by measuring the weight of the individual containers. The air-rates were maintained at 6 levels, or 5, 8, 10, 15, 18 and 20 millimenters of static head of water. The roomair conditions during dryer operation were maintained in the range of 10-l5$^{\circ}C$ in temperature and 40-60% in relative humidity. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. Drying characteristics of the grains in the bottom layers were approximately the same regardless of airdelivery rates, giving the average drying rate as about 0.35 percent per hour after 40-hour drying period, during which moisture content (w. b.) reduced from 24 percent to about 10 percent. 2. After about 40-hour drying period, the mean drying rates increased from 0.163 percent per hour to 0.263 percent per hour as air-flow rates increased from 5mm to 87.16mm of static head of water. In the same time, the moisture differences of grains between lower and upper layers varied from 12.7 percent at the air rate of 5mm of water head to 7.5 percent at the air-flow rate of 20mn of water head. Thus, the greater the air-flow rate was, the more overall improvement in drying performance was. Additionally, from the result of ineffectiveness of drying grain positioned at 70cm depth or above by the air rate of 5mm of static head of water it may be suggested in practical application that the height of grain deposit would be maintained adequately within the limits of air-rates that may be actually delivered. 3. Drying after layer-turning operation was continued for about 30 hours to test the effectiveness of reducing moisture differences in the thick layers. As a result of this layer-turning operation, moisture distribution through layers approached to narrow ranges, giving the moisture range as about 7 percent at air-flow rate of 5mm head of water, about 3 percent at 10mm head about 2 percent at 15mm head, and less than 1 percent at 20mm head. In addition, from the desirable results that drying rate was rapid in the lower layers and dully in the upper layers, layer-turning operation may be very effective in natural air drying with deep-layer grain deposit, especially when the forced air was kept in low rate. 4. Even though the high rate of air delivery is very desirable for deep-layer natural-air drying of rough rice, it can be happened that the required air delivery rate could not be attained because of limitation of power source available on farms. To give a guide line for the practical application, the power required to perform the drying with the specified air rate was analyzed for different sizes of drying bin and is given in Table (5). If a farmer selects a motor of which size is 1 or {{{{1 { 1} over {2 } }}}} H.P. and air-delivery rate which ranges from 8~10mm of head, the diameter of grain bin may be suggested to choose about 2.4m, also power tiller or other moderate size of prime motor may be recommended when the diameter of grain bin is about 5.0m or more for about 120cm grain deposit.

Mechanical properties and microstructures of stabilised dredged expansive soil from coal mine

  • Expansive soil is the most predominant geologic hazard which shows a large amount of shrinkage and swelling with changes in their moisture content. This study investigates the macro-mechanical and micro-structural behaviours of dredged natural expansive clay from coal mining treated with ordinary Portland cement or hydrated lime addition. The stabilised expansive soil aims for possible reuse as pavement materials. Mechanical testing determined geotechnical engineering properties, including free swelling potential, California bearing ratio, unconfined compressive strength, resilient modulus, and shear wave velocity. The microstructures of treated soils are observed by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and energy dispersive spectroscopy to understand the behaviour of the expansive clay blended with cement and lime. Test results confirmed that cement and lime are effective agents for improving the swelling behaviour and other engineering properties of natural expansive clay. In general, chemical treatments reduce the swelling and increase the strength and modulus of expansive clay, subjected to chemical content and curing time. Scanning electron microscopy analysis can observe the increase in formation of particle clusters with curing period, and x-ray diffraction patterns display hydration and pozzolanic products from chemical particles. The correlations of mechanical properties and microstructures for chemical stabilised expansive clay are recommended.

Effects of Cissus quadrangularis L. Powder on Proximate Composition, Physicochemical and Textural Properties of Tteokgalbi

  • We investigated Cissus quadrangularis L. powder (C) use as a natural additive to Tteokgalbi, a traditional Korean meat-based dish. Five distinct Tteokgalbi samples were treated: one without any additives (negative control, NC), one with 1.00% C (C1), 2.00% C (C2), 4.00% C (C3), and 0.10% ascorbic acid (positive control, PC). C addition resulted in changes in composition, quality, and sensory attributes. Moisture content decreased with higher C levels; crude protein varied among the groups, with C1 having the highest crude protein levels and C3 the lowest. Crude fat decreased with increasing C concentration, whereas the carbohydrate content increased. The water-holding capacity notably decreased in the C3 group, resulting in increased cooking loss with higher C concentrations. C treatment altered color and texture, reducing CIE L* and increasing CIE a* before cooking and increasing CIE L* and CIE a* after cooking. CIE b* decreased before cooking but increased thereafter. C-treated Tteokgalbi was less cohesive, chewy, and brittle compared to the NC. The C treatment increased the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and enhanced radical scavenging capacities. It also affects storage characteristics, lowers pH, and increases 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances values. The microbial counts were lower in C2 and C3 after 11 days. These findings suggest the potential use of C as a natural meat additive.
