  • In this study, weight of evidence(WOE) technique based on the bayesian method was applied to estimate the groundwater yield characteristics in the Pocheon area in Kyungki-do. The ground water preservation depends on many hydrogeologic factors that include hydrologic data, landuse data, topographic data, geological map and other natural materials, even with man-made things. All these data can be digitally collected and managed by GIS database. In the applied technique of WOE, The prior probabilities were estimated as the factors that affect the yield on lineament, geology, drainage pattern or river system density, landuse and soil. We calculated the value of the Weight W+, W- of each factor and estimated the contrast value of it. Results by the ground water yield characteristic calculations were presented in the form of posterior probability map to the consideration of in-situ samples. It is concluded that this technique is regarded as one of the effective technique for the feasibility mapping related to detection of groundwater bearing zones and its spatial pattern.

  • Generally, the integrated system using ion beam consists of 4 major parts, which are SEM, FIB, nano stage, and chamber. Among them, the nano stage and the chamber are designed and manufactured. The whole systems are integrated. Also, FE models are built to perform modal analyses of each part and the whole integrated system with a commercial program. Through these analyses, it is found that each part and the integrated system are very safe against vibrations including external excitations from ground and any others, because their natural frequencies are much larger than frequencies of external excitations. Also, isolation of ground induced vibration is considered.

  • A simple microwave backscattering model for vegetation canopies on earth surfaces is developed in this study. A natural earth surface is modeled as a two-layer structure comprising a vegetation layer and a ground layer. This scattering model includes various scattering mechanisms up to the first-order multiple scattering( double-bounce scattering). Radar backscatter from ground surface has been modeled by the polarimetric semi-empirical model (PSEM), while the backscatter from the vegetation layer modeled by the vector radiative transfer model. The vegetation layer is modeled by random distribution of mixed scattering particles, such as leaves, branches and trunks. The number of input parameters has been minimized to simplify the scattering model. The computation results are compared with the experimental measurements, which were obtained by ground-based scatterometers and NASA/JPL air-borne synthetic aperture radar(SAR) system. It was found that the scattering model agrees well with the experimental data, even though the model used only ten input parameters.

  • Today they use a weather radar with spatially high resolution in predicting rainfall intensity and utilizing the information for super short-range forecast in order to make predictions of such severe meteorological phenomena as heavy rainfall and snow. For a weather radar, they use the Z-R relation between the reflectivity factor(Z) and rainfall intensity(R) by rainfall particles in the atmosphere in order to estimate intensity. Most used among the various Z-R relation is $Z=200R^{1.6}$ applied to stratiform rain. It's also used to estimate basic rainfall intensity of a weather radar run by the weather center. This study set out to compare rainfall intensity between the reflectivity of a weather radar and the ground rainfall of ASOS(Automatic Surface Observation System) by analyzing many different cases of heavy rain, analyze the errors of different weather radars and identify their problems, and investigate their applicability to nowcasting in case of severe weather.

  • Telematics services include automatic location tracking for emergency rescue, which is available for use in case of a car accident due to falling off roadways. This paper presents a simulation study on how far a car will fall before it hits the ground if it drops off of a roadway due to an accident or a natural disaster. The greatest horizontal distance the falling car can travel is presented in this paper, based on the assumption that air resistance as well as the direction and degree of acceleration due to gravity is negligible. This paper also presents the depth of the dent caused by the car sinking into the ground, the time it took for the car to fall free, and the velocity at which it travelled and horizontal distance it traveled. In this paper, the damage done to cars that crash into the ground and the dangers thereof are graphically represented.

  • Because the overhead transmission lines are exposed to the outdoor weather, the faults of the transmission lines are due to natural conditions, and among these faults, the outage rate by lightning is about $50\%$. Therefore, the insulation design is important to decrease the damage of the facility and to increase the reliability of electric power system. This paper describes the protective method of substation equipments using the Underbuilt Ground Wire and the Guy Wire. This would not only reduce backflashover possibility but also minimize crest and duration of surges entering the substation. EMTP is used to analyze the efficiency of the proposed methods.

  • The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Earth Observing System (EOS) of Terra and Aqua satellites, launched in December 1999 and May 2002, has been directly received by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) ground station facility from July 2002. MODIS scans a swath width of 2330 km that is sufficiently wide to cover Korean peninsular, Yellow and East Sea at once. The MODIS has 36 spectral bands between 0.415 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 14.235 $\mu\textrm{m}$, i.e., through the visible into the thermal infrared. MODIS has been observed active fires, floods, smoke transport, dust storms, severe storms since February of 2000. The satellite imagery obtained through the MODIS will be utilized for many application such as national territorial management, agriculture, natural environment, atmosphere and ocean, etc. In this study is to introduce various application field of MODIS imagery and data processing system.

  • There has been tighten up the need of seismic retrofit about 31 public facilites since published "Korean Earthquake Damage Prevention Law". Therefore, seismic studies have been developed and enforced the studies. Measuring dynamic stiffness of subsurface materials influence on seismic performance evaluation to build up seismic retrofit. The soil dynamic properties for seismic performance evaluation are N-value from using SPT(standard penetration test), dynamic shear elastic modulus and dynamic deformation modulus using laboratory tests. The most unscientific element in ground dynamic properties involved uncertainties is obviously N-value using SPT. This study shows that effect of N-value included natural and artificial uncertainties to seismic performance evaluation of ground structures is not only approached probabilistic analysis using FOSM method and tornado diagram, but also review how to spread effect of seismic performance evaluation of ground structures.

  • The use of compaction grouting system(C.G.S) evolved in the 1950's to correct structural settlement of buildings. Over the almost 50 years, the technology has developed and is currently used in wide range of applications. Compaction Grouting, the injection of a very stiff 'zero-slump' mortar grout under relatively high pressure, displaces and compacts soils. It can effectively repair natural or man-made soil strength deficiencies in variety of soil formations. Major uses of Compaction Grouting include densifying loose soils or fill voids caused by sinkholes, poorly compacted fills, broken utilities, improper dewatering, or soft ground tunneling excavation. Other application include preventing liquefaction, re-leveling settled structures, and using compaction grout bulbs as structural elements of minipiles or underpinning. So, on the basis of the case history constructed in recent year, a study has been performed to analyze the basic mechanism of the Compaction Grouting and verify the effectiveness of the ground improvement.

  • Energy foundations and other thermo-active ground structure, energy wells, energy-slab, and pavement heating and cooling represent an innovative technology that contributes to environmental protection and provides substantial long-term cost savings and minimized maintenance. This paper focuses on earth-contact concrete elements that are already required for structural reasons, but which simultaneously work as heat exchangers. Pipes, energy slabs, filled with a heat carrier fluid are installed under conventional structural elements, forming the primary circuit of a geothermal energy system. The natural ground temperature is used as a heat source in winter and a heat sink in summer. The geothermal heat pump system with energy-slab represented very high heating and cooling performance due to the stability of EWT from energy slab. However, the performance of it seemed to be affected by the atmospheric air temperature.
