  • Seaweed extracts, namely carrageenan obtained from Grateloupia elliptica and algin obtained from Laminaria, were employed as adhesive agents to synthesize solid adhesives for paper. Carrageenan from Grateloupia elliptica with the highest adhesive strength and lgin from Laminaria with the highest compressive strength was selected. The selected carrageenan and algin were mixed in a ratio of 7:3, and the mixture was employed as an adhesive agent. At a high temperature, sodium stearate(used as a solidifying material) oxidized the seaweed extracts. Consequently, carrageenan and algin were added to the final manufacturing process. The adhesive strength of the final synthesized solid adhesive is found to be 3.02 MPa and the compressive strength is found to be 30.5 N. Compared to the adhesive strength (2.95 MPa) and compressive strength (30.11 N) of commercial solid adhesives, the obtained results indicate superior adhesion characteristics. Furthermore, the proposed adhesive is environment-friendly because the presence of volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, and heavy metals(such as chromium, lead, and cadmium) were not detected. Moreover, when used, the flatness of paper was twice that of commercial solid paper adhesives. Hence, the proposed adhesive can provide excellent adhesion, stability, and usability.

  • This study started from the need to improve one of shortcomings of synthetic PVAc adhesives - potential physical harm and environmental hazards to the workers or their users. As a matter of fact, PVAc adhesives are currently mainly used because of their convenience and economy for the production of woodcrafts. The purpose of this study was to develop natural adhesives through research on natural adhesives in step with the current increase of societal attention to environmental friendliness and rapid surge in their demand in the face of such problems. So, the study attempted research on the bases to develop natural adhesives for woodcraft, using cellulose extracts from wood - natural adhesive material. The findings of the study were as follows. Firstly, natural adhesives showed the improved effect in the field of adhesive strength, a basic physical property by 0.2 - 4 times compared with the existing materials and the study confirmed they had the similar or stable pH value. Besides, they had good reversibility, demonstrating their basic physical property as a natural adhesive for woodcraft. While, their durability to ultraviolet ray degradation also showed an excellent result value being better by 1.5 - 8.5 times than the existing materials. The study expects natural adhesives with improved and better performances compared with the existing materials could be developed, if further research on adhesive strength, antibiosis, conservative property were to continue by developing refinery technology for cellulose extracts from wood and rendering the functionality to them.

  • The structure of the RC structure is actively reinforcing the structure of the building which has suffered from aging, artificial and natural damage of the building. Among various reinforcement methods, epoxy adhesive is used to attach FRP in FRP reinforcement method which is reinforcing by attaching FRP to the structural part. At this time, the epoxy adhesive having a low critical temperature has a sudden adhesive failure upon exposure to heat, and thus, the development of an inorganic fireproof adhesive having a high critical temperature has progressed. Therefore, in this study, the compositional change of inorganic fire - resistant adhesive exposed to high temperature heat was analyzed by XRD.

  • Recently, people's interest in eco-friendly plastics derived from nature to replace petroleum-based plastics is increasing due to environmental problems such as microplastics. In line with this trend, eco-friendly adhesives using natural materials and processes are also being developed in the adhesive field. Among them, maltose is a natural substance derived from starch and is the main component of starch syrup used as a food additive. Due to its lower molecular weight than starch, it is easily soluble in water, and above all, there is a possibility that it can be copolymerized with other monomers through solution polymerization. However, researches related to the application of maltose to adhesives are very rare. In this study, after modifying maltose using acrylic anhydride, the product was analyzed through FT-IR and H-NMR. And the modified maltose was copolymerized with two kinds of acrylic monomers. The synthesized adhesive was applied on the wood and the adhesive performance were investigated.

  • A new gastrotrich species of the genus Crasiella (Planodasyidae) is described from the sublittoral sandy bottom of Jeju Island, South Korea. The family Planodasyidae and the genus Crasiella are recorded for the first time from East Asia. Crasiella clauseni n. sp. differs from its congeneric species by the combination of characters: absence of cephalic sensory pits; unseparated arrangement of anterior tubes and ventrolateral tubes, comprising about 120 adhesive tubes along whole body length; 5-7 horizontal rows of adhesive tubes and a pair of TbV in the anterior part of pharyngeal region; bifid pedicles with 8-11 posterior adhesive tubes; and tube-shaped seminal receptacle and copulatory organ. This paper deals with description of the new species, and provides a key to the species of genus Crasiella.

  • Two new gastrotrich species belonging to genus Tetranchyroderma are described on the basis of the specimens from intertidal or sublittoral sand bottoms of South Korea. Tetranchyroderma heterotentaculatum, n. sp. is clearly differentiated from its congeners by the character combination: the cuticular armature with pentancres, modified rod-like cephalic tentacles, and three pairs of dorsolateral adhesive tubes. Tetranchyroderma hoonsooi, n. sp. possesses tetrancres, paired lateral cephalic tentacles, and ventro-lateral adhesive tubes along whole lateral margin, while lacks dorsal adhesive tubes. Affinities with its congeners and variability within the species are discussed, with brief notes on morphological discrepancies between adults and juveniles.

  • The five species of genus Cobitis from Korea were investigated by electron microscopes to clarify the adhesive membranes on zona radiata. In the late vitellogenic stage the adhesive membranes could be classified into two form as follows: 1) granular form of Cobitis lutheri, C. striata, C. sinensis, and C. sinensis-longicorpus, 2) villous form of C. melanoleuca. Although C. lutheri, C. striata, C. sinensis, and C. sinensis-longicorpus possessed the same granular form, it was evident that fine structure of the zona radiata varied according to species. The adhesive membranes and fine structures of zona radiata in Cobitis showed a species specificity closely related to their habitats and spawning properties.

  • To improve the adhesive strength of natural rubber (NR) for a seismic isolation damper, citraconic acid-g-NR (CCA-g-NR) was synthesized via the melt grafting of citraconic acid (CCA) onto NR using an azobisisnomerobutyronitrile (AIBN) initiator. Subsequently, the influence of CCA and AIBN concentrations on the graft ratio G/R (%) and graft efficiency G/E (%) of the CCA-g-NR was investigated. The optimum CCA and AIBN concentrations required to achieve the desired G/R (3.49%) and G/E (49.8%) were found to be 7 phr and 0.13 phr, respectively. Additionally, we studied the influence of CCA-g-NR concentration on the mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus at 300%), adhesive strength, and cure characteristics of the rubber compound in the seismic isolation damper. As the concentration of CCA-g-NR increased, the elongation at break and adhesive strength of the compound increased, whereas its tensile strength and modulus at 300% decreased. Moreover, as the concentration increased, the maximum torque decreased and the scorch time was delayed to obtain an optimal vulcanization time.
