The aim of this paper concerns with the nonlinear analysis of cable-stayed bridges including the vibration effect of cable stays. Two models for the cable stay system are built up in the study. One is the OECS (one element cable system) model in which one single element per cable stay is used and the other is MECS (multi-elements cable system) model, where multi-elements per cable stay are used. A finite element computation procedure has been set up for the nonlinear analysis of such kind of structures. For shape finding of the cable-stayed bridge with MECS model, an efficient computation procedure is presented by using the two-loop iteration method (equilibrium iteration and shape iteration) with help of the catenary function method to discretize each single cable stay. After the convergent initial shape of the bridge is found, further analysis can then be performed. The structural behaviors of cable-stayed bridges influenced by the cable lateral motion will be examined here detailedly, such as the static deflection, the natural frequencies and modes, and the dynamic responses induced by seismic loading. The results show that the MECS model offers the real shape of cable stays in the initial shape, and all the natural frequencies and modes of the bridge including global modes and local modes. The global mode of the bridge consists of coupled girder, tower and cable stays motion and is a coupled mode, while the local mode exhibits only the motion of cable stays and is uncoupled with girder and tower. The OECS model can only offers global mode of tower and girder without any motion of cable stays, because each cable stay is represented by a single straight cable (or truss) element. In the nonlinear seismic analysis, only the MECS model can offer the lateral displacement response of cable stays and the axial force variation in cable stays. The responses of towers and girders of the bridge determined by both OECS- and MECS-models have no great difference.

The presence of a damage, such as a crack, in a structure increases the flexibility and damping in the structure. Most of methods to detect damage or damage location uses stiffness matrix of the structural system. The modification of stiffness matrix, however, has complicated procedures to identify structural. system in the basis of finite element model and has too many degree of freedom to calculate. Identification of changes of flexibility of structure can offer damage information immediately and simple procedure can employ real time continuous monitoring system. To identify changes of the flexibility, vibration mode shapes and natural frequencies are usually used. In this paper, a procedure for damage location in continuous girder bridges using vibration data is described. The effectiveness and sensitivity of the presented method to measurement errors in mode shapes and natural frequencies are investigated using analytical results from finite element models. It is shown that the errors in the first mode shape and first natural frequency demonstrate much larger influence than those in the higher mode shapes and modal frequencies.
Ambient vibration tests were carried out to evaluate the dynamic properties of an asymmetric steel building with semi-rigid connections. The test case has many non-structural elements, constructed in the city of Tehran (Iran). The tests were conducted to obtain natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratio of the structure and then Fourier transform were used to analyze the velocity records obtained from the tests. The first and second natural periods of the building were obtained as 1.37 s and 1.28 s through the test and damping ratio for the first mode was calculated as 0.047. However, Natural periods obtained from finite element model have higher values from those gained from ambient vibration. Then the model was calibrated by modeling of the in-fill masonry panels at their exact locations and considering the boundary conditions by modeling two blocks near the block No. 3, but the differences were existed. These differences may be due to some hidden stiffness of nonstructural elements in the low range of elastic behavior, showing the structure stiffer than it is in reality.

A cantilever beam with a mass and a spring at the end can be use to model a miniature flexible arm. It is necessary to know the natural frequencies and mode shapes to discuss its free vibration, especially when modal analysis is employed. A beam is clamped-free. In this paper we look at the lateral vibration of beams that have step changes in the properties of their cross sections. The frequency equation is derived by Bernoulli-Euler formulation and is sloved by the separation of variable. The parameters of the beam, 'mass and spring stiffness' are defined as nondimensionalized parameters for wide application of the results. According to the change of eigenvalues and mode shape are presented for this beam. The results presented are the eigenvalues and the natural frequencies for the first three modes of vibration. Results show that the parameters have a significant effect on the natural frequency.
The vibrational characteristics of a radial-ply (155SR13 4PR) and a biased-ply tire (6.15-134PR) were investigated for examining the effects of tires with different structure on the ride characteristics of the vehicle. The natural frequencies at the tread band, mode shapes, and damping factors of two tires at the state of plane vibration were determined experimentally. The test work was performed at four levels of the inflation pressure, ranging from 171.7 kPa to 245.2 kPa, and three levels of the vertical load, deviating by 10% from the standard load designated by the Department of Transportation of the United States of America. The following results were drawn by the analysis of the test results: 1. The first-order natural frequencies of the radial-ply and the biased-ply tires at the tread band were 112 Hz and 159 Hz, respectively, at the state o f the free vibration when the inflation pressure of 196.2 kPa was applied. It was known that the biased-ply tire has higher resonant frequency than the radial-ply tire and the natural frequencies of the both tires move to the high frequency range as t he inflation pressure is increased. 2. The vibration modes of both tires were quite different. No big difference in mode shapes was examined as the inflation pressure was increased. But the natural frequencies of two tires were changed. For the radial-ply tire, no difference in mode shape was found whether the vertical load was applied or not. But a significant difference in mode shape was examined for the biased-ply tire. 3. Any difference was not found in damping factor as the different inflation pressures were applied. 4. When no vertical load was applied, damping factors of the radial-ply and biased-ply tire at the state of the natural vibration ranged from 2.6 to 5.9%, and from 4.1 to 7.8%, respectively. It was estimated that the radial-ply tire would have better cushioning than the biased-ply tire since the vertical spring rate of the radial-ply tire was much less than that of the biased-ply tire, even though the damping effect of the radial-ply tire was smaller than that of the biased-ply tire.
The vibrational characteristics of Langevin-type piezoelectric torsional transducers have been studied theoretically and experimentally in this paper. The differential equations of piezoelectric torsional motion have been derived in terms of the circumferential displacement and the electric potential. Solutions of the boundary-value problem have yielded the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the transducers. The theoretical solutions have been verified by comparing the numerical results with experimental ones.

In this paper, a study of the effenctiveness and convergency of five damage measures for structural damage detection of 2-dimensional truss structure using the extended Kalman filtering algorithm is presented. These damage measures are associated with the change in mode shape and displacement due to structural damage. Damage measures contain the change in natural frequency, mode shape, curvature of mode shape, displacement of static force and curvature of displacement of static force. The effectiveness and convergency of these damage measures by using extended Kalman filtering algorithm are demonstrated with the numerical examples.
Dynamic characteristics of a structure, i.e., natural frequency and mode shape, have been widely using as an input data in the area of structural integrity or health monitoring which combined with the damage evaluation and structural system identification techniques. It is very difficult, however, to get those information by the conventional modal analysis method from large structures, such as the offshore structure or the long-span bridge, since the source of vibration is not available. In this paper, a method to obtain the frequencies and the mode shapes of a large span truss structure using only acceleration responses is studied. The calculation procedures to obtain acceleration responses and frequency response functions are provided utilizing a numerical model of the truss, and the process to extract natural frequencies and mode shapes from the modal analysis is cleary explained. The extracted mode shapes by proposed method are compared with those from eigenvalue analysis for the estimation of accuracy. The validity of the mode shapes is also demonstrated using an existing damage detection technique for the truss structure by simulated damage cases.
An axial-flow-induced vibration model was proposed for a rod supported by two translational springs at both ends. For developing the model, a one-mode approximation was made based on the assumption that the first mode was dominant in vibration behavior of the single span rod. The first natural frequency and mode shape functions for the flow-induced vibration, called the FIV model were derived by using Lagrange's method. The vibration displacements at reactor conditions were calculated by the proposed model for the spring-supported rod and by the previous model for the simple-supported(55) rod. As a result, the vibration displacement for the spring-supported rod was larger than that of the 55 rod, and the discrepancy between both displacements became much larger as flow velocity increased. The vibration displacement for the spring-supported rod appeared to decrease with the increase of the spring constant. AS flow velocity increased, the increase rate of vibration displacement was calculated to go linearly up, and that of the rod having the short span length was larger than that of the rod having the long span length although the displacement value itself of the long span rod was larger than that of the short one.

This paper investigates the vibration characteristics of steam generator (SG) U-tubes with defect. The operating SG shell-side flow field conditions for determining the fluidelastic instability parameters such as added mass are obtained from three-dimensional SG flow calculation. Modal analyses are performed for the U-tubes either with axial or circumferential flaw with different sizes. Special emphases are on the effects of flaw orientation and size on the modal and instability characteristics of tubes, which are expressed in terms of the natural frequency, corresponding mode shape and stability ratio. Also, addressed is the effect of the internal pressure on the vibration characteristics of the tube.
