  • There is an inseparable relation between human race and engineering work. As world developed into highly industrialized society, a diversity of large structures is being built up correspondently to limited topographical circumstance. Though large structures are national establishments which provide us with convenience of life, there are some disastrous possibilities which were never predicted such as ground subsidence and degradation. It is very difficult to analyze the volume of total metamorphosis with the relative displacement measurement system which is now used and it is impossible to know whether there is structural metamorphosis within a permissible range of design or not. In this research with an object of 13-year-old earthen dam, through generating point-cloud which has 3D spatial coordinates(x, y, z) of this dam by means of 3D Laser Scanning, we can get real configuration data of slanting surface of this dam with this method of getting a number of 3D spatial coordinates(x, y, z). It gives 3D spatial model to us and we can get various information of this dam such as the distance of slanting surface of dam, dimensions and cubic volume. It can be made full use of as important source material of reinforcement and maintenance works to detect previously the bulging of the dam through this research.

Skew Correction for Document Images Using Block Transformation (블록 변환을 이용한 문서 영상의 기울어짐 교정)

  • Skew correction for document images can be using a rotational transformation of pixel coordinates. In this paper we propose a method which corrects the document skew, by an amount of $\theta$ degrees, using block information, where the block is defined as a rectangular area containing adjacent black pixels. Processing speed of the proposed method is faster than that of the method using pixel transformation, since the number of floating-point operations can be reduced significantly. In the proposed method, we rotate only the four corner points of each block, and then identify the pixels inside the block. Two methods for inside pixel identification are proposed; the first method finds two points intersecting the boundary of the rotated block in each row, and determines the pixels between the two intersection points as the inside pixel. The second method finds boundary points based on Bresenham's line drawing algorithm, using fixed-point operation, and fills the region surrounded by these boundaries as black pixels. We have measured the performance of the proposed method by experimenting it with 2,016 images of various English and Korean documents. We have also proven the superiority of our algorithm through performance comparison with respect to existing methods based on pixel transformation.

  • As a kind of 2D spatial coordinate transform, image warping is a basic image processing technique utilized in various applications. Though image warping algorithm is composed of relatively simple operations such as memory accesses and computations of weighted average, real-time implementations on embedded vision systems suffer from limited computational power because the simple operations are iterated as many times as the number of pixels. This paper presents a real-time implementation of a look-up table(LUT)-based image warping using an FPGA. In order to ensure sufficient data transfer rate from memories storing mapping LUT and image data, appropriate memory devices are selected by analyzing memory access patterns in an LUT-based image warping using backward mapping. In addition, hardware structure of a parallel and pipelined architecture is proposed for fast computation of bilinear interpolation using fixed-point operations. Accuracy of the implemented hardware is verified using a synthesized test image, and an application to real-time lens distortion correction is exemplified.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PLOT GEOMETRY AND INPUTS REQUIRED FOR FARM MACHINE OPERATION IN KOREA

  • The rapid industrial growth, the consequent shortage of farm labour and increase in their wage level have facilitated more capitalized agricultural mechanization pattern in Korea. The efficiency of capital intensive machine is highly dependent on farm land structure. This paper describes a model explaining the relationship between farmland structure and required inputs for machine operation and to estimate required inputs for machine operation on the national basis for Korea for its paddy production system. The machine cost is closely related to operation area, but the required labour-hours are more related to machine type adopted . From the technology introduction point of view, if capital intensive machine is introduced, less labour-hours are required but machine kW-hours increase rapidly. From the plot geometry point of view, on good geometry plots, machine kW-hour and labour-hour required are less than that on the poor geometry plots. The kW-jhour per hectare of mechani al energy input id better indicator of mechanization level than kW per hectare or number of machine. If the adopted technology is more capital intensive and plot geometry is good, the cost reduction effect is highly significant.

  • Cop protein has been overexpressed in Escherichia coli using a T7 RNA polymerase system. Purification to apparent homogeneity was achieved by the sequential chromatography on ion exchange, affinity chromatography, and reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography system. The molecular weight of the purified Cop was estimated as 6.1 kDa by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). But the molecular mass of the native state Cop was shown to be 19 kDa by an analytical high performance size exclusion chromatography, suggesting a trimer-like structure in 50 mM Tris-HCI buffer (pH 7.5) containing 100 mM NaCl. Cop protein Was calculated to contain $39.1% {\alpha}-helix, 16.8% {\beta}-sheet$, 17.4% turn, and 26.8% random structure. The DNA binding property of Cop protein expressed in E. coli Was preserved during the expression and purification process. The isoelectric point of Cop was determined to be 9.0. The results of amino acid composition analysis and N-terminal amino acid sequencing of Cop showed that it has the same amino acid composition and N-terminal amino acid sequence as those deduced from its DNA sequence analysis, except for the partial removal of N-terminal methionine residue by methionyl-aminopeptidase in E. coli.

Note on the appearance of Freak Waves from in-situ ocean wave data

  • Freak waves in the ocean are recently drawing much attention as a natural disaster to ocean structures and navigating ships as well. Several observation data, among them the Draupner New Year Wave, show the very impressive feature of Freak waves whose wave height is up to three times as high as the significant wave height of surrounding waves, In addition, Freak wave appears as an isolated very high crest in somewhat stationary random waves of same order in their wavelengths. Bearing such characteristics in mind, one notices its extraordinary steepness. This strongly suggests that Freak wave is not long lived but transient nature on the whole. A great number of studies to explain these natures were published from both theoretical and numerical point of view. However it is not sure if they are applicable to actual ocean environment. In this paper, we deal with the results concerning abnormal and/or Freak waves from in-situ ocean wave data and point out several remarks to the problems lain behind the contributions in this context. A physical experiment is described to reinforce the subject discussed from the observation data.

Optimal Harvest-Use-Store Design for Delay-Constrained Energy Harvesting Wireless Communications

  • Recent advances in energy harvesting (EH) technology have motivated the adoption of rechargeable mobile devices for communications. In this paper, we consider a point-to-point (P2P) wireless communication system in which an EH transmitter with a non-ideal rechargeable battery is required to send a given fixed number of bits to the receiver before they expire according to a preset delay constraint. Due to the possible energy loss in the storage process, the harvest-use-and-store (HUS) architecture is adopted. We characterize the properties of the optimal solutions, for additive white Gaussian channels (AWGNs) and then block-fading channels, that maximize the energy efficiency (i.e., battery residual) subject to a given rate requirement. Interestingly, it is shown that the optimal solution has a water-filling interpretation with double thresholds and that both thresholds are monotonic. Based on this, we investigate the optimal double-threshold based allocation policy and devise an algorithm to achieve the solution. Numerical results are provided to validate the theoretical analysis and to compare the optimal solutions with existing schemes.

A Simple Mlodel for Dispersion in the Stable Boundary Layer

  • Handling the emergency problems such as Chemobyl accident require real time prediction of pollutants dispersion. One-point real time sounding at pollutant source and simple model including turbulent-radiation process are very important to predict dispersion at real time. The stability categories obtained by one-dimensional numerical model (including PBL dynamics and radiative process) are good agreement with observational data (Golder, 1972). Therefore, the meteorological parameters (thermal, moisture and momentum fluxes; sensible and latent heat; Monin-Obukhov length and bulk Richardson number; vertical diffusion coefficient and TKE; mixing height) calculated by this model will be useful to understand the structure of stable boundary layer and to handling the emergency problems such as dangerous gasses accident. Especially, this simple model has strong merit for practical dispersion models which require turbulence process but does not takes long time to real predictions. According to the results of this model, the urban area has stronger vertical dispersion and weaker horizontal dispersion than rural area during daytime in summer season. The maximum stability class of urban area and rural area are "A" and "B" at 14 LST, respectively. After 20 LST, both urban and rural area have weak vertical dispersion, but they have strong horizontal dispersion. Generally, the urban area have larger radius of horizontal dispersion than rural area. Considering the resolution and time consuming problems of three dimensional grid model, one-dimensional model with one-point real sounding have strong merit for practical dispersion model.al dispersion model.

An Efficient Distributed Delay-Constrained Unicast Routing Algorithm (지연시간을 고려한 효율적인 분산 유니캐스트 라우팅 알고리즘)

  • We propose a heuristic distributed unicast routing algorithm for minimizing the total cost of the path in a point to point network with do]ay constraint. The algorithm maintains a delay vector and a cost vector about the network states and finds the path using this information. In this paper, we show that our algorithm always finds a delay-constrained path if such a path exists and has O(│E│) message complexity(│E│is the number of links in the network). Also, simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has better cost performance than other delay-constrained routing algorithms.

Reconsideration of Iron Arrowheads from Mongchon Earthen Wall (몽촌토성출토 철촉 재고 (夢村土城出土 鐵鏃 再考))

  • This paper reconsiders the users of iron arrowheads from Mongchon Earthen Wall(夢村土城). Because the Mongchon Earthen Wall has been seen as a major dwelling fort of the Hansong Period(漢城時代 : 18 B.C.~475), Paekche(百濟), these iron arrowheads have been considered as artifacts of the Hansong Paekche with no systematic analysis since they were found in 1985. However, uncovering numerous Koguryo artifacts, the excavations in 1988 and 1989 showed that Koguryo(高句麗) army had occupied the Mongchon Earthen Wall after they had conquered Hansong Paekche. In this paper, focusing on the formal similarity between these arrowheads and those from other Koguryo sites, I attempt to reconsider the nature of arrowheads from the Mongchon Earthen Wall. Found from a small pit, all of these arrowheads (88 in number) seem to have been contemporaneous. While all are stemmed, they can be divided into nine types on the basis of the shape of body and point. Most types are equal or similar to Koguryo arrowheads of other regions, and especially type F and G have not been found in southern Korean Peninsula. Accordingly, it is suggested that the existing models be reconsidered, and that Koguryo army who had conquered Hansong Paekche used these arrowheads around mid-5th century AD. Although at this point it is difficult to determine the users of these arrowheads only by analyzing several formal attributes due to Korean archaeology's little understanding of the arrowheads of the Three Kingdoms Period(三國時代), I expect that application of natural scientific methods will contribute to a better understanding.
