We studied forest structure and composition in the vicinity of Srinagar Hydroelectric Power Project in Alaknanda Valley, Garhwal Himalaya, India to provide baseline data for the management of forests. Eight sites were selected in the vicinity of power project based on elevation and species composition. Density varied from 650 to 340 ind ha-1 for trees and from 4,360 to 6,480 ind ha-1 for shrubs. TBC ranged from 35.02 to 54.02 ㎡ ha-1 for trees and from 0.875 to 2.628 ㎡ ha-1 for shrubs. On the basis of density and IVI, Pinus roxburghii was found dominant tree species in most of the sites, whereas among the shrubs, Carissa opaca was dominant. Dominance of Pinus roxburghii in most of the sites is an indication towards possible threat to associated species in the area. The dominance-diversity curve of trees showed a geometric distribution, whereas the shrubs displayed log-normal curves. The forest has rich and diverse species composition however; habitat degradation caused by the construction of Power Project might lead to reduction of plant species from the area. The information obtained from this study will be helpful in predicting possible changes in the forest ecosystem properties in near future after completion of the power project.

Recently the dramatical development of domestic spatial information technology and the successful construction of Korea NGIS(Nation Geographic Information System) have been the foundation of the scientific national territory utilization and management. However, there still exists the original problems to construct the thematic maps for supporting the various administrative services because administrative officials tend to depend on paper maps and inventories to generate spatial information, process, upgrade and manage. In this situation, there is a greater need to develop GIS system for the effective construction of various thematic maps. In this study, the satellite image based high accurate e-thematic construction and management system was developed to support the forest administrative service such as generating user based forest thematic maps, modifying them, analyzing and outputting through GIS, GPS and satellite images. For the case study, the previous forest paper map of Jeju Island was converted in format of raster and vector data using satellite images to maintain more exact location information so that this system helps to manage domestic spatial information scientifically and effectively within shorter time then support the standard for domestic spatial information. Moreover, this system plays the role of DSS(Decision Supporting System) for forest administrative affairs by integrating the attribute data, managing the GPS data and linking the multimedia data. For this, the additional main objective of this study was acquired powerful GIS component, which is called as e-mapping component, so that it could be regarded as enabling interoperability and reusability within this application. For the future works, the essential element idea and technology in this study could be applied very usefully to other official works such as constructing thematic maps and supporting the desired affairs.

This study was conducted to classify tree species and assess the classification accuracy, using SE-Inception, a classification-based deep learning model. The input images of the dataset used Worldview-3 and GeoEye-1 images, and the size of the input images was divided into 10 × 10 m, 30 × 30 m, and 50 × 50 m to compare and evaluate the accuracy of classification of tree species. The label data was divided into five tree species (Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Larix kaempferi, Abies holophylla Maxim. and Quercus) by visually interpreting the divided image, and then labeling was performed manually. The dataset constructed a total of 2,429 images, of which about 85% was used as learning data and about 15% as verification data. As a result of classification using the deep learning model, the overall accuracy of up to 78% was achieved when using the Worldview-3 image, the accuracy of up to 84% when using the GeoEye-1 image, and the classification accuracy was high performance. In particular, Quercus showed high accuracy of more than 85% in F1 regardless of the input image size, but trees with similar spectral characteristics such as Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis had many errors. Therefore, there may be limitations in extracting feature amount only with spectral information of satellite images, and classification accuracy may be improved by using images containing various pattern information such as vegetation index and Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM).
u-Park means national parks with environmentally sound information networks and integrated ubiquitous services are available. u-Park is totally managed based on u-IT (Ubiquitous IT Technologies) which provides ubiquitous service through sophisticated resources of national park and establishments. It is necessary in changing the existing park management system into u-IT based u-Park management system that park managers should accept new technology, u-Park management system, and be able to utilize it. The purposes of this research is to analyze managers' acceptance behavior on ubiquitous computing technology. Technology acceptance model (TAM) was introduced to specifies the causal relationships among variables related to managers' technology acceptance behavior. The hypothesized model was tested by surveying 157 managers at 5 national parks in Korea. TAM accounted for 55.2% of the variance in intention to use. The most important finding is that perceived compatibleness was the most influential variable in determining intention to use. This means that u-Park management system should be compatible with manager's task and business style.
The objective of this study was to identify and evaluate indicators which offer the significant influence on recreationists' experiences. Delphi survey technique with a panel of professionals was employed to collect data for this study. The Delphi process was designed with three round questionnaires. The identified indicators in this study should be basic information for Benefit-Based Management (BBM) Model for forest recreation areas. A list of 38 indicators relating to physical/biological, managerial and social components of recreation experiences submitted from three round questionnaires. From the results, indicators included in physical/biological category suggested as more important ones than other categories of indicators.

This paper proposes a method to detect and monitor the land creeping area using a UAV to analyze the damaged area efficiently. Using a UAV, it was possible to secure the safety of the investigators before the field survey and effectively utilize it to establish an investigation plan because an orthophoto can be used to detect and scale the cracks in a land creeping area. In addition, it was possible to analyze the scale of the crack quantitatively by extracting the topographic information from the orthophoto. The study sites were found to have a total crack area of 1.01 ha, a length of 1.07 km, an average width of 10 m, and a step distance of 1 to 10 m. Periodic UAV measurements can be used to detect displacements on the land creeping area and monitor the direction and scale of crack spread. Therefore, it is expected to be used effectively during recovery planning. Applying the UAV to the land creeping area resulted in the qualitative and quantitative results quickly and easily in dangerous mountainous watersheds. Therefore, it is expected that it will contribute to the development of related industries because of the high availability of a UAV in forest soil sediment disasters, such as landslides, debris flow, and land creeping area.
This study concentrates on the trail of the CNU(Chungnam National University) forest. The amount of use and the pattern of damage are considered, as well as the extent of environmental damage. Finally, some managerial strategies are proposed in connection with sustainable maintenance. The trail of the university forest is composed of three sections; one is the neighborhood park and the Institute of Information Technology/Communications, the second is the Institute of Information Technology/Communications and the Dormitory, and the third section is the Dormitory and the Foreign prof's Apt. The total length of the trail is 2.6km. The daily amount of use is 1,269 visitors per day. The amount of using increased three times the amount of that in 1998. This study shows the pattern of damage of the trail in the order of root-exposure, widening, rock-exposure, deepening and the divergence in the frequency of occurrence of all these factors. Environmental damage is also graded thus: grade 3 is 27.4m, grade 4 is 0.8m, grade 5 is 1.5m, and grade 6 is 0.2m. Accordingly, some managerial strategies were proposed in connection with the sustainable trail maintenance.

In South Korea, forest fire occurrences are increasing in size and duration due to various factors such as the increase in fuel materials and frequent drying conditions in forests. Therefore, it is necessary to minimize the damage caused by forest fires by appropriately providing the probability of forest fire risk. The purpose of this study is to improve the Daily Weather Index(DWI) provided by the current forest fire forecasting system in South Korea. A new Fire Risk Index(FRI) is proposed in this study, which is provided in a 5km grid through the synergistic use of numerical weather forecast data, satellite-based drought indices, and forest fire-prone areas. The FRI is calculated based on the product of the Fine Fuel Moisture Code(FFMC) optimized for Korea, an integrated drought index, and spatio-temporal weighting approaches. In order to improve the temporal accuracy of forest fire risk, monthly weights were applied based on the forest fire occurrences by month. Similarly, spatial weights were applied using the forest fire density information to improve the spatial accuracy of forest fire risk. In the time series analysis of the number of monthly forest fires and the FRI, the relationship between the two were well simulated. In addition, it was possible to provide more spatially detailed information on forest fire risk when using FRI in the 5km grid than DWI based on administrative units. The research findings from this study can help make appropriate decisions before and after forest fire occurrences.
The objectives of this study were to (a) describe and quantify the socio-psychological outcomes of forest recreationist, (b) to describe the setting attributes facilitating the outcomes, and (c) to identify which attributes were most important to visitors. During the spring of 1995, 426 visitors from the Worak-san National Park selected for this study. This study identified nine resource attributes (physical, social and managerial), and twelve socio-psychological outcomes on the forest reccreation values. This study also determined that a significant linear relationship exists between resource attributes and visitors' experience outcomes. Use of information on the socio-psychological outcomes sought by recreationists is discussed. Such information would aid in the developing recreation inventory, selecting management tools and techniques, and in the differential economic valuation of recreation resources.
Stem and root of elm trees have used as traditional medical materials, but there is little information on the distribution and resources of habitats. Korean native growing Ulmus spp. (U. davidiana var. Japonica, U. parvifolia, U. davidiana, and U. macrocarpa) genetic resources studied through The National Forest Inventory of Korea data and field survey. The distributions of U. davidiana var. japonica according to elevation distributed evenly. Both U. parvifolia and U. davidiana were inhabited mostly at less than 200 m of altitude. Each Ulmaceae species widely were distributed nationwide, but a dominant species was different depending on locals. It observed that Ulmaceae inhabits mainly in steep slopes of 31-45 degrees. Most of the habitats regenerated by natural seeding and the most abundant species were a codominant tree. Distribution of trees in U davidiana var. japonica was 7 m-13 m, and in young U. parvifolia and U. macrocarpa, more than 25% of young trees less than 7 m observed. The distribution of the diameter of breast height of the U. davidiana var. japonica was 46.4% for 11-20 cm, 52.6% for 11-20 cm in U. parvifolia. The average T/R ratio was 0.83, and the mean weight ratio of root bark was 62%. As the results of this study, the domestic Ulmaceae biomassare very small. It is difficult to harvest in that the habitat on the slope. Thus, it is too hard to develop functional materials using biomass at present. Therefore, it is necessary to develop technology for the selection and propagation of elite trees of Ulmaceae.
