Brand Personality and Archetypical Symbolism of Animal Applied to Fashion Brand Logos

  • As fashion brand logos have been used conspicuously, they have been recognized as a part of the product design. Since the 2000s, fashion designers have actively begun to apply fashion brand logos to product designs by transforming, patterning, and distorting, so the importance of fashion brand logos were emphasized. This article has attempted to establish the implications between fashion brand personality and the motif which is applied to a fashion brand logo. 27 of fashion brand logos were chosen because they are easy to access and have a history of more than 10 years. As a result, these 27 logos were categorized into 5 animal motifs: a horse, a bird, a snake, a dog and a tiger. In recent years, numerous studies have found that the appearance and behavior of an animal affects their symbol system which is recognized by humans. To deduce the symbolism which is communicated by a brand logo, archetypical symbols of 5 animals were analyzed as mentioned and the brand personality and image of 27 brands. As a result, there are implications between the archetypical symbol of animal motifs and a brand image and brand personality. A majority of the adjectives which express the archetypical symbolism of animal motifs as well as brand image and brand personality are similar. Moreover, the personalities of fashion brands categorized by animal motifs are different from each other, so how each animal motif communicates different images and symbols was explored.

  • We, in this thesis, examined the similarities and differences of bat patterns in China and Korea, along with a consideration of how two peoples understood bats and how their understanding of bats developed and also influenced the bat patterns. As for research period, the Ming(明) dynasty and the Qing(淸) dynasty in China and the Chosun dynasty in Korea were considered. The subjects of this study included clothes, personal ornaments, and embroidery. This research was done by comparing and analyzing the similarities and differences of two countries' bat patterns. The results of comparing and analyzing Chinese and Korean bat patterns were as follows: In terms of similarity, people of two countries understood bat patterns as the symbol of happiness. Therefore, they were used in clothes, personal ornaments, and daily necessities. In terms of difference, bat patterns of two countries had different shapes. In China, colorful and realistic single bat patterns were shown as intensive composition, whereas in Korea plain and simple bat patterns were used. These differences resulted from different way of understanding of bat patterns. It can be concluded that the bat patterns can be a great cultural commodity with high commercial values, if the traditional pattern is used as a unique element of the Oriental designs and altered and developed to attract consumers' attention.

  • The jeans fashion has important meaning as the symbol of sociocultural phenomenon related with modern fashion. It became the symbol of natural fashion beauty representing freedom and equality and sometimes the sensual style. This study defined the meaning, element, and importance of fashion styling by analyzing preliminary studies and analyzed the aesthetic characteristics of the jeans fashion. The purpose of this study is to drive four styling patterns of the jeans fashion based on such theoretical studies and empirical researches about jeans fashion and plan and direct jeans fashion styling for each style. The results also provides the basis for acknowledging that the idea of 'directing and creating a style' according to a person's intent beyond the one-dimensional idea of simply 'wearing' clothes is the true fashion styling and will set an important footing in the fashion field with the ideas that fit the 21st century.

ML Symbol Detection for MIMO Systems in the Presence of Channel Estimation Errors

  • In wireless communication, the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is a well-known approach to improve the reliability as well as the data rate. In MIMO systems, channel state information (CSI) is typically required at the receiver to detect transmitted signals; however, in practical systems, the CSI is imperfect and contains errors, which affect the overall system performance. In this paper, we propose a novel maximum likelihood (ML) scheme for MIMO systems that is robust to the CSI errors. We apply an optimization method to estimate an instantaneous covariance matrix of the CSI errors in order to improve the detection performance. Furthermore, we propose the employment of the list sphere decoding (LSD) scheme to reduce the computational complexity, which is capable of efficiently finding a reduced set of the candidate symbol vectors for the computation of the covariance matrix of the CSI errors. An iterative detection scheme is also proposed to further improve the detection performance.

The BRQ(Brand Relation Quality) Construct Perceived by Fashion Product Consumers (Part 2) (패션상품 소비자가 인식하는 상표관계본질(BRQ: Brand Relationship Quality) 규명 (제2보))

  • The objective of this research is to validate the BRQ(Brand Relationship Quality) Construct perceived by fashion product consumers. In order to establish and verify the BRQ scale, qualitative survey and quantitative survey were conducted together. 1592 copies of questionnaire were distributed to women in their 20s to 40s living in Seoul and other metropolitan areas from Dec. 26, 2005 to Jan. 8, 2006, and 723 copies of them were used for statistical data. Samplel(n=482)was used for empirical analysis, and sample2(n=241) was used for cross validity test. The data was analyzed using Exploratory Factor Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, and Pearson's Correlation Analysis. BRQ emerged from exploratory factor analysis as the hierarchical construct composed of six facets including 'self-connective attachment', 'symbol/mystery', 'trust', 'nostalgia', 'intimacy', and 'knowledge'. As the fit of this structural model was not good as a result of Confirmatory Factor Analysis, it was revised to have better fitting. Finally, empirical survey results indicate the hierarchical construct consisting of eight distinct BRQ facets including 'love/commitment', 'self-connection', 'symbol', 'mystery', 'trust', 'nostalgia', 'intimacy', and 'knowledge' as best representing the final 39item BRQ Scale. Reliability, construct validity, and cross validity of the construct were verified.

Acoustic effects of the sound tube and resonance cavity in Korean Brahman Bells (한국범종의 음관과 명동)

  • The presence of the sound tube and resonance cavity is unique in Korea Brahman Bells which is no examples in other country bells in the world. The sound tube erected in the crown is effective to emit the fundamental tone of the bell when the condition of resonant transmissibility is satisfied. The results of our analysis shows that the optimum length of the sound tube in the Bell Emile is 96cm but is not the present length, 77cm. The resonance cavity erected underneath the lip of the Bell Emile is found to be for the resonance of standing waves in the space including both bell cavity and resonance cavity and resonance cavity to the fundamental tone of the bell itself, in order that the strongest vibration can last long by least energy and lengthen the reverberation of the bell. Some historical remarks are also made on the magic flute, MANPASIKJUK, which was in existence in Shilla that can lull all evil waves, such as plagues, storms, droughts, famines and even enemies. The sound tube erected in the crown of the bell was originated in this magic flute. Finally, a strong proposal is advanced on the new national symbol of Korean traditional cultural assets. Indeed, it should be highly recommended that the Great King's Bell Emile would be the only real symbol of our national cultural assets by its own right of excellency and richness in every aspect of arts and sciences.

Iterative Group Detection and Decoding for Large MIMO Systems

  • Recently, a variety of reduced complexity soft-in soft-output detection algorithms have been introduced for iterative detection and decoding (IDD) systems. However, it is still challenging to implement soft-in soft-output detectors for MIMO systems due to heavy burden in computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a soft detection algorithm for MIMO systems which performs close to the full dimensional joint detection, yet offers significant complexity reduction over the existing detectors. The proposed algorithm, referred to as soft-input soft-output successive group (SSG) detector, detects a subset of symbols (called a symbol group) successively using a deliberately designed preprocessing to suppress the inter-group interference. In fact, the proposed preprocessor mitigates the effect of the interfering symbol groups successively using a priori information of the undetected groups and a posteriori information of the detected groups. Simulation results on realistic MIMO systems demonstrate that the proposed SSG detector achieves considerable complexity reduction over the conventional approaches with negligible performance loss.

A Study on Cultural Interpretation of the Plants in "The Book of Songs" - Based on Symbolic Elements and Landscape Elements - (시경(詩經)에 나타난 식물 소재의 문화적 해석 - 상징요소와 경관조성요소의 관점에서 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to sort out the plants in "The Book of Songs", and to analyze the cultural significance of plants from the viewpoint of the symbolic elements and the landscape elements in the 3~11 century BC. The conclusions are as follows. First, there were 147 plant names and 136 plant species in "The Book of Songs", and these results can confirm that the plants were existed in the 3~11 century BC. Second, through analyzing the cultural significance of the plants, cattail, lotus, etc. are the symbol of lovers; peony and willow are the symbol of farewell; bamboo is the symbol of gentleman; and Japanese pepper is the symbol of fecundity. Third, at the viewpoint of the landscape elements, the poplar, dwarf elm, etc. can be used as a place of affection; reed and nepenthe can make a place of melancholy, hazel and chestnut tree, etc. can make a place of power and position, celery and water shield etc. can be used as a place of knowledge. Based on the research of "The Book of Songs", it can help to understand the plants culture in 3~11 century BC, and it will be a useful information for the plant design.

A Study on the Uniform Design for the Olympics Using Geongongamli and the Taegeuk Symbol -Focused on the Uniform for the Opening Ceremony- (건곤감리와 태극문양을 활용한 올림픽 유니폼 디자인 연구 -개막식 유니폼을 중심으로-)

  • Olympic uniforms emphasize aesthetics along with sports fashion trends and tendencies to display national competitiveness through colorful designs that use the national flag or colors as motifs. Korea needs to enhance the national brand through international sporting events such as the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Games (30 years after the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games); therefore, a multilateral analysis is required to promote a global image of Korea. This study presents a development direction for more diverse national brand values for Korea through design research on Olympic uniforms. Research methods investigated the concepts and changes of the Geongongamli, and Taegeuk symbols as well as Olympic uniforms based on literature data and existing studies using uniforms. An Olympic uniform using symbols of the Korean flag was designed through a case analysis of Olympic uniform designs of countries that participated in the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games and 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games that reflect the countries' image. The research scope excluded uniforms for the actual games and limited the uniforms to official uniforms for the opening ceremony that represent the characteristics of each country; consequently, we analyzed 70 uniforms of 162 countries of the Winter Olympic Games. As a result, official national symbols were more frequently reflected than unofficial symbols in the uniform designs of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games with more frequencies of direct reflection than indirect reflection. Korea's national brand is expected to enhanced through a uniform that expresses Korea's image at international events and global exchanges.
