  • Collision tumor is a synchronous neoplasm wherein two histologically distinct tumors co-exist within the same anastomosis site. Collision tumor can occur in any organ, but the incidence is markedly rare. Additionally, preoperative diagnosis can be challenging to the radiologist. Herein, we report an age 60 male with collision tumor of rectal adenocarcinoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, presented as a semi-annular wall thickening and bulky exophytic mass on MR imaging.

  • This is a report of a migrated polyethylene catheter from the arm vein cutdown site into the heart. The patient was a 48 years old male who was operated on for mitral stenosis complicated with pulmonary hypertension. On the 8th postoperative day after open mitral commissurotomy, polyethylene catheter embolization occurred. The catheter was removed successfully with an incision on the proximal basilic vein. The patient recovered uneventfully and discharged without complications.

  • As a result of continuous taxonomic study on crabs, Clistocoeloma villosum (A. Milne-Edwards, 1869) is newly reported from Korean waters. C. villosum has no epibranchial tooth on the carapace, while C. merguiense De Man, 1888, only recorded species of this genus in Korean fauna, has two epibranchial teeth. The description and illustrations of C. villosum are provided herein. Korean Sesarmid crabs now consist of 10 species belonging to six genera.

  • Recently, there have been discussions among national observatories in East Asia about the possibility of EAO and the Subaru observatory forming a partnership. The official EAO-Subaru partnership can make the powerful wide-field observation capabilities of Subaru available to Korean astronomers through EAO, and also can serve as an excellent platform to gather astronomers in East Asia together for flourishing regional collaboration activities. A working group has been formed to outline the framework of the EAO-Subaru partnership, and the working group report has been prepared. In this talk, I will explain the proposed partnership framework in the working group report. Inputs are very welcome from KAS members about the proposed framework.

  • In May to July 2019, ovate-leaf atractylodes seedling and plant with Damping-off symptoms were observed in farmer field at Sangju and Mungyeong, Korea. Seven fungal isolates have been retrieved from diseased root tissue and identified as Rhizoctonia solani AG-5 based on morphological and molecular characteristics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on damping-off of ovate-leaf atractylodes caused by R. solani AG-5 in South Korea.

  • Renal inflammatory pseudotumor is a very rare benign condition of unknown etiology characterized by proliferative myofibroblasts, fibroblasts, histiocytes, and plasma cells. In the case we report, the lesion appeared on contrast-enhanced power Doppler US images as a well-defined hypoechoic mass with intratumoral vascularity, and on CT as a low-attenuated mass. Differentiation from malignant renal neoplasms was not possible.

  • A 1-year-old castrated mixed-breed dog presented with diffuse, purple lesions arranged in an irregular patchy pattern, with a slight elevation on the right hindlimb extending from the tarsus joint to the upper region of the thigh. Dermatological examinations and fungal and bacterial cultures revealed no infectious agents. The therapeutic response to antibiotics and antifungal agents was negative. A histopathology examination of the lesion revealed vascular proliferation with vasodilation and numerous varying-sized vessels. Mast-cell-dominated perivascular cuffing was also noted. The dog was diagnosed with cutaneous angiomatosis due to diffuse lesions and the histopathology findings of hemangioma.

  • An African swine fever (ASF) outbreak in wild boars was first reported on October 2, 2019, in South Korea. Since then, additional cases were reported in South Korea's border areas. We here report the identification of ASF virus (ASFV) DNAs from two out of eight environmental abiotic matter samples collected from areas where ASF-positive wild boar carcasses were found. Comparative genomic investigations suggested that the contaminating ASFV DNAs originated from the wild boar whose carcass had been found near the positive sample sites. This is the first report on the identification of ASF viral material in wild boar habitats.

  • Calcifying aponeurotic fibroma (CAF) is an uncommon benign soft-tissue fibroblastic tumor with characteristic histological features. It mainly occurs in the distal part of the extremities, such as the hands and feet, in children and adolescents. Males are twice as commonly affected as females. CAF exhibits local invasiveness, and hence, its recurrence rate is also high. Therefore, complete surgical excision is both diagnostic and therapeutic. The occurrence of CAF in the maxillofacial region, especially the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), is very rare, and this necessitates its differentiation from other TMJ neoplasms. The differential diagnosis of CAF requires microscopic examination. Herein, we report a rare case of CAF located at the left mandibular condyle, which was confirmed by histopathological analysis.

  • Serratus anterior plane block (SAPB) has been used for perioperative pain control during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), and the effects of continuous SAPB have been studied. This procedure is usually performed by the anesthesiologist; however, it could be performed more simply and safely by the thoracic surgeon through the use of meticulous finger dissection to create a space in the deep serratus anterior plane during surgery. We describe 3 cases of surgical catheterization for continuous SAPB in patients with lung cancer during VATS lobectomy, in which postoperative pain was effectively reduced.
