  • Cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis are uncommon pediatric diseases, although clinicians have seen them with increasing frequency in children in recent years. Moreover, no case of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection with cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis has been previously reported in the English literature. We report a pediatric patient with EBV infection, a gall bladder stone, and a common bile duct stone, may have had GB and CBD stones prior to her EBV infection, whom we successfully treated with antibiotics and laparoscopic cholecystectomy for cholecystitis.

  • In a yeast two-hybrid screen, we identified the microtubule-destabilizing protein SCG10 as a potential effector protein of $BRI_3$. The association was verified using GST pull-down, Co-IP, and their perinuclear co-localization. The analysis of in vitro microtubule polymerization/depolymerization showed that the binding of $BRI_3$ to SCG10 effectively blocked the ability of SCG10 to induce microtubule disassembly, as determined by turbidimetric assays. In intact PC12 cells, $BRI_3$ exhibited the ability to stabilize the microtubule network and attenuate the microtubule-destabilizing activity of SCG10. Furthermore, co-expression of $BRI_3$ with SCG10 attenuated SCG10-mediated PC12 cell neurite outgrowth induced by NGF. These results identify a novel connection between a neuron-specific BRI protein and the cytoskeletal network, suggesting possible roles of BRI3 in the process of neuronal differentiation.

  • Congenital cysts of the mediastinum are rare, but interesting lesions. Such cysts are important because they may produce distressing symptoms and because some have a malignant potential. Mediastinal cysts of foregut origin represent an important diagnostic group. Classified according to their anomalous embryonic origins they include pericardial, bronchogenic, esophageal, enteric, and nonspecific cysts. A series of 11 consecutive surgically treated cases from the Dep. of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery in National Medical Center from Oct. 1959 to Dec. 1990, all successfully resolved without mortality. The 8 bronchogenic, 1 enteric, & 2 non specific cysts are included in this series. And 2 of 11 were asymptomatic patients presented. The clinical & pathological behavior of the individual cysts comprise a wide variety of patterns. Proper utilization of the many diagnostic tests available can accurately characterize the cysts. The exact histologic diagnosis, however, is rarely made prior to operation.
