The issue of 'carbon reduction' can be said to be one of the most important issues worldwide. For efficient carbon reduction, it is necessary to consider ways to increase absorption and reduce emissions. Accordingly, much attention has been paid to increasing carbon absorption using blue carbon biomass. Blue carbon biomass refers to an ecosystem related to blue carbon, which has a higher carbon absorption rate than inland ecosystems and a longer collection period. It is very efficient in reducing carbon. Therefore, in this study, a current status survey was conducted on domestic and foreign policies, studies, and plans related to the preservation of blue carbon biomass habitats. Basic research was conducted to prepare plans for future preservation of blue carbon biomass habitats suitable for the domestic environment.

Hwangmaesan Mt. (1,108 m) is rich in forest biodiversity and is a part of the Sobaek mountain range located in Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsang-do in Korea. Unfortunately, the biodiversity and ecosystem integrity of Hwangmaesan Mt. have recently been threatened by heavy human disturbances. We conducted thirteen field surveys between March and October of 2019 to investigate the vascular flora in Hwangmaesan Mt. Through this extensive survey, we found 628 taxa consisting of 106 families, 349 genera, 554 species, 16 subspecies, 48 varieties, and 10 forma. Based on a comparative analysis between the present findings and former flora reports, our results showed an increase by 28 percent in the number of taxa observed. Of the 628 taxa, dicotyledons made up the largest group (477 taxa, 76.0%) followed by monocotyledons (120 taxa, 19.1%). Endemic plants consisted of 16 taxa, with rare plants designated by the Korea Forest Service numbering 14 taxa. Ten taxa were listed on the Red list by the Ministry of the Environment. The floristic target species designated by the Ministry of the Environment numbered 75 taxa, whereas there were 42 taxa of invasive plants.

Morphological characteristics of Cordyceps species and its allies collected in Korea were clarified. Through the survey conducted from June 1999 to October 2002 in 19 mountains in Korea, 667 samples of entomogenous fungi were collected. Cordyceps and its allies of 17 species of 5 genera were identified as Cordyceps gracilioides, C. japonica, C. longissima, C. martialis, C. militaris, C. myrmecophila, C. nutans, C. pruinosa, C. sphecocephala, C. tricentri, Hirsutella nutans, Paecilomyces cicadae, P. farinosus, P. tenuipes, Paecilomyces sp., Shimizuomyces paradoxa, Tilachlidiopsis nigra. The fungi with insect hosts have been collected mainly in the place of shade or mosses near brooks and streams that had high humidity. Overall the frequenct of fungal infection in natural ecosystem was relatively low as few as 10 collections per each species. However, many species were found in terms of the few number of colleciton sites with seasonal limitations. Occurrence of the fungi in Jeju island remote from inland of the Korean peninsula were diverse in their species due to the varied weather of vertical distribution following the altitude. Three most common species were C. nutans, P. tenuipes and C. militaris, mainly found early in August when the relative humidity and temperature were high, of which C. nutans occupied the highest frequency consisting of 65% in total collections. Neither variation in ascomata arrangement in stromata nor developement of secondary spores was recognizable, while the number, shape and colour of stromata varied with insect hosts and weather conditions.

A culture-dependent survey of bacterial community in the soil-root system of red pepper and tomato was conducted by dilution plate count method. The bacterial community within soil was not different from that of rhizoplane. However, the populations of fluorescent, pseudomonads were higher in rhizoplanes than in soils and higher in healthy rhizoplanes than in Phytophthora disease-infested rhizoplanes. The bacterial community of the pepper cropped soil and rhizoplanes was very similar to that of the tomato-cropped soil and rhizoplanes. Among 285 identified bacterial colonies, most colonies were belong to two groups by fatty acid analyses: 52% of the 285 colonies were belong to low G + C gram positive bacteria group. Bacillus spp. and 33% were belong to high G + C gram positive bacteria group. In order to use beneficial microorganisms to agro-ecosystem, these data of field trials should be intensively accumulated.
Soil microbes are important integral components of soil ecosystem which have significant and diverse role in organic matter decomposition, nitrogen cycling, and nitrogen fixation. In this study an effective denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) method was employed for paddy soil microbial diversity survey. For optimum paddy soil microbial DNA extraction, different methods such as Lysis buffer, skim milk bead, sodium phosphate buffer, Epicentre Soil Master DNA extraction kit (Epicentre, USA) and Mo Bio Power Soil DNA kit (MO BIO, USA) methods were utilized. Among all the method, using Mo Bio Power Soil kit was most effective. DGGE analysis of Bacteria was carried out at 6% polyacylamide gel and 45-60% denaturing gradient in the optimal conditions. Whereas DGGE analysis of fungi was done at 6% polyacrylamide gel and 45-80% denaturing gradient in the optimal conditions. By applying the above assay, it was found that variation within the microbial community of paddy soil occurs by a factor of time. DGGE assay used in this study through for a variety of soil microbial analysis suggests the potential use of this method.

In order to investigate vertical plant distribution on Namdeogyu of Mt. Deogyu National Park by temperature change, vascular plants of nine areas with 100-meter-high difference were surveyed from the Deogsangyo (650m alt.) to the Namdeogyusan (1,507m alt.). A total of 455 taxa belonging to 99 families, 280 genera, 402 species, 5 subspecies, 43 varieties, 4 forms and 1hybrid were vegetated on survey areas. Around 700 m high did species diversity of vascular plants decrease rapidly. The Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) divided distribution of vascular plants into five groups; areas below 700m alt., 700~1,100m alt., 1,100~1,300m alt., and areas above 1,300m alt.. These results showed that vegetation of vascular plants on investigated areas has high correlation with climate elements of temperature. Vascular plants should be crowded within their own optimal ranges of vegetation. Climate change would result in shift of these distribution ranges, and thus vegetation shift will be happened accordingly.
To predict changes in the marine environment of the Beolgyo Stream Estuary in Jeonnam Province, South Korea, where cohesive tidal flats cover a broad area and a large bridge is under construction, this study conducted numerical simulations involving tidal flow and cohesive sediment transport. A wetting and drying (WAD) technique for tidal flats from the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) was applied to a large-scale-grid hydrodynamic module capable of evaluating the flow resistance of structures. Derivation of the eddy viscosity coefficient for wakes created by structures was accomplished through the explicit use of shear velocity and Chezy's average velocity. Furthermore, various field observations, including of tide, tidal flow, suspended sediment concentrations, bottom sediments, and water depth, were performed to verify the model and obtain input data for it. In particular, geologic parameters related to the evaluation of settling velocity and critical shear stresses for erosion and deposition were observed, and numerical tests for the representation of suspended sediment concentrations were performed to determine proper values for the empirical coefficients in the sediment transport module. According to the simulation results, the velocity variation was particularly prominent around the piers in the tidal channel. Erosion occurred mainly along the tidal channels near the piers, where bridge structures reduced the flow cross section, creating strong flow. In contrast, in the rear area of the structure, where the flow was relatively weak due to the formation of eddies, deposition and moderated erosion were predicted. In estuaries and coastal waters, changes in the flow environment caused by artificial structures can produce changes in the sedimentary environment, which in turn can affect the local marine ecosystem. The numerical model proposed in this study will enable systematic prediction of changes to flow and sedimentary environments caused by the construction of artificial structures.
During the breeding season, both adults and immature Eurasian Oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus osculans) were observed to feed on prey, such as gastropods (Umbonium thomasi) and bivalves, at the tide water line around Yubu island in Korea. To determine differences in the foraging efficiency between the adult and immature birds, we recorded the feeding behavior using digiscoping with a telescope and a smartphone. We compared the pace, the prey search rate, the proportion of prey search techniques, the feeding success rate, the handling time, and the heads-up rate between the adult and immature birds. There were significant differences in the proportion of prey search techniques when gastropods were consumed and in the prey search rate and heads-up rate when bivalves were consumed but there were no significant differences in feeding success rates. Therefore, although the immature birds on Yubu Island were inferior to adults during the breeding season and they lacked the proficiency to locate prey, their overall foraging efficiency was similar to adults. This was considered to be due to the continuous eating of bivalves during the wintering season, which requires a high level of foraging efficiency.

Since trees in the city are green assets that create a healthy environment for the city, systematic management of trees improves urban ecosystem services. The sporadic urban tree information centered on the site is vast, and it is difficult to manage the data, so efforts to increase efficiency are needed. This paper summarizes tree data inventory based on data constructed by Seoul Green Trust activists and constructs and discloses online database maps using Tableau Software. In order to verify the utilization of the map, we divided into consumer and supplier aspects to collect various opinions and reflect feedback to implement tree database maps for each area and species of Seoul Forest. As a result, the utilization value of tree database in urban parks was presented. The technical significance of this study is to systematically record the process of constructing and implementing a dashboard directly using the Mapbox platform and Tableau Software in the field of landscaping for the first time in Korea. In addition, the implications and supplements of landscape information were derived by collecting user opinions on the results. This can be used as an exploratory basis in the process of developing online-based services such as web and apps by utilizing landscaping tree information in the future. Although the visualization database currently constructed has limitations that ordinary users cannot interact in both directions because it utilizes business intelligence tools in terms of service provision it has affirmed both the database construction and its usability in web public format. In the future it is essential to investigate the assets of the trees in the city park and to build a database as a public asset of the city. The survey participants positively recognized that information is intuitively presented based on the map and responded that it is necessary to provide information on the overall urban assets such as small parks and roadside trees by using open source maps in the future.
This study was carried out to investigate the flora of the western front (Paju-Yencheon Area) of the Civilian Control Zone. Vascular plants collected in these areas were a total of 558 taxa composing of 501 species, 3 subspecies, 48 varieties and 1 forma of 330 genera under 109 families This shows that 11% of the 4,880 vascular plant species that are known to exist in Korea is distributed in the western part of the DMZ. 1 taxa of endangered species designated by the Ministry of Environment was found: the Polygonatum stenophyllum Maxim in the edge of the military operation road from Taepung observatory to Imjin river. For the floristically specific ones of the Korean floristic zones, 3 taxa of the $5^{th}$ grade, 3 taxa of the $4^{th}$ grade, 13 taxa of the $3^{rd}$ grade, 13 taxa of the $2^{nd}$ grade and 22 taxa of the $1^{st}$ grade were found. For the endemic species of Korea, 4 taxa including Cirsium setidens (Dunn) Nakai were confirmed to be distributed mostly on the slope or the cutting area. Among the collected rare plants (11 taxa), there were 1 taxa of endangered species, 4 taxa of vulnerable species and 6 taxa of least concern species. Also, 51 taxa of naturalized plants were identified and 4 taxa of ecosystem disturbance organism designated by the Ministry of Environment were identified. The urbanization index and naturalization index for all species were estimated to be 15.89% and 9.14% respectively. Our survey is expected to be considered as primary data of biological diversity and ecological axis in the DMZ and the western part of the DMZ. According to the results of this study, it is thought to be necessary to establish policies for conservation and protection of the DMZ.
