  • In this research, the first the characteristics of community-oriented vocabulary are investigated with preceding researches which are ULIS-DL and Digital Okayama Dai-Hyakka(DODH). The second this paper proposes a few mapping schemes to connect community directories and compares them by applying them to the resource directories of three local governments Tokyo and Hokkaido in Japan and Chungcheongnam-do in Korea. The mapping schemes use National Diet Library Subject Heading(NDLSH) and/or Nippon Decimal Classification(NDC) as a switching language. • This study focuses on the analysis of the Cooperative system of Japanese local libraries (Do-do-bu-ken prefecture) in Japan, which perform similar functions along a similar hierarchy with the local representative libraries in South Korea. I would like to use this analysis as material for my report. For the study, I visited eight distinguished and advanced Japanese local libraries (Do-do-bu-ken prefecture) that had been selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to analyze the current situation of the Cooperative system and service. I conducted space planning through plan analysis by selecting five out of the eight libraries. As a result, it was shown that the Japanese local libraries (Do-do-bu-ken prefecture) accurately recognize the roles and functions as a regional central library of Japan and conduct Cooperative system not only with the National Diet Library of Japan but also with regional central libraries in the whole country. In terms of the space planning, the ratio of the space occupied by the task management part of the office area and the support area showed the highest space planning ratio according to role for the library.

  • The author analyses the challenging activities of Japanese libraries in this decade by launching two keywords; "product-sharing" and "outcome generation." "Product-sharing" means that libraries share knowledge, skills, and records which are produced as the result of the services or in the process of activities. And "outcome generation" means that libraries generate any efficiency or effectiveness through their services to users. Using these concepts, reported are the current situation and aspects of Japanese libraries which try to make various contributions to the society; research and learning of the people, and education and training for professional librarians, and so on. In the analysis, the author shows some examples of "product-sharing" at first, including the records of reference transaction and the multi-functioned online public access catalogue. Especially, focused is on the various possibility and adoptability of the Collaborative Reference Database System of the National Diet Library of Japan. This system is one of digital reference service in Japan, and the database of reference transaction records is expected to be useful for research and academic studyies as knowledge-base of professional librarians. And the system is also expected to be a platform for LIS education and professional development in the e-learning environment. Secondly, as the examples of "outcome generation", explained are the problem-solving-type activities, and provision of the collection about books on struggling against disease and illness. A few examples of outcome in the problem-solving-type activities are these; increase of sales in the services for shop managers, business persons, and entrepreneurs, contribution to affluent daily life by providing the local information services to residents and neighbourhoods, and etc. And for both the patients with serious cases and their family or those who nurse them, books about other persons' notes or memorandum are the greatest support, and sometime healing. The author discuss the 'raison d'etre' of these activities focusing on public libraries in Japan.

  • The World Health Organization estimated that more than a billion people (or 15% of the world's population) lives with disabilities. They have the same information needs as non-disabled people. Nevertheless, as the World Blind Union estimated, less than 10% of published books are ever made into accessible formats in developed countries. The role of the national library should be very important to improve the information accessibility for the disabled. Based on this perspective, this study analyzed and compared the history and development, legal basis and organization, main functions and tasks, and service features for the disabled for the Library of Congress of the United States, MTM(Myndigheten för Tillgängliga Medier) of Sweden, National Diet Library of Japan, and SALB (South African Library for the Blind) of Republic of South Africa representing the nationwide disability services by continent. And based on the results of the analysis, this study suggested ways to strengthen the capacity of the National Library for the Disabled of Korea.

  • Cannabis is a historical plant which has been used as a medicine in East Asia. These days, there are active debates about using cannabis in clinical field. Collecting and comparing cannabis research articles which had been published in the Opening of Japan to spot the interactions between the traditional medicine of Japan, Rangaku which was established in Edo Period and the European medicine which is transferred after Perry Expedition is academically meaningful. This study searched publications, which were listed on Open-Access databases by Dec. 11th, 2019. We collected research articles which had been published from January 3rd, 1867 to July 30th, 1912 also known as Meiji era and uploaded on OpenAccess databases. Our searching databases were J-stage, CiNii (Scholarly and Academic Information Navigator), Tokyo Metropolitan Library, The National Diet Library, IRDB (Institutional Repositories DataBase) and KAKEN (Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research Database). Searching keywords were cannabis, hemp and all their Japanese synonyms and available combinations. We selected final 15 studies which met every selection criteria in the 346,393 collected studies. Cannabis was prescribed in Meiji era of Japan to alleviate pain and cure the digestive, respiratory, urinary, and nervous system diseases such as indigestion, asthma, tuberculosis, gonorrhea and its complications, insomnia, and nervous prostration. Cannabis was medically used in Meiji era of Japan and the reporting and sharing of its clinical effect was published on the medical journals like present days. There were already Cannabis regulations in that era, but its medicinal use was more liberated than nowadays. It may be a chance to reconsider the current legal system, which strictly controls the use of Cannabis.

  • Name Authority Control is useful not only to manage author information but also to gather other names of authors in order to provide access points in libraries and other institutes. The purpose of this study is to find problems through comparing and analyzing Literature Translation Institute of Korea Author Database, Korean name authority records of national libraries in the U. S., Japan and Korea. The results of the study are as follows. First, Literature Translation Institute of Korea Author Database missed some useful information about Korean writers in translated books in other countries. Second, the name authority file of Library of Congress and National Diet Library did not include the variant names, dates of authors' birth and death date, and filled out incorrect variant names with some birth and death dates. Third, English and Chinese character variants of Korean authors were not found in the National Library of Korea. To solve these problems, revisions of Korean author database, open access to National Library of Korea name authority file, and a strong participation of VIAF were suggested.
