  • Having regarded space technology as one of national strategic technologies for its national development, the Korean Government legislated "Space Development Promotion Act" in 2005. Based on it, the Korean government established "National Space Committee" and set up "Long-Term Plan for Korea's Space Development". For the fulfillment of those national policies, related organizations including Korea Aerospace Research Institute are developing various satellites, space launch vehicle(KSLV-1), and Naro-space center. etc.

  • NARO Space Center is being developed as a national project for the Korea Space Development Program. Among the major missions of the Space Center, the Range Control System is the focal point for all command and control operation of the Space Center. The acquired data from the Tracking Stations and the on-site facilities is processed and distributed in the Control Center. Data processing or data fusion is needed for the exact tracking of the Launch Vehicle from several tracking systems.   • There would be a long-waited launch of a Korean space launch vehicle(KSLV-I) in NARO Space Center which is located in Goheung, Jeol La Nam Do in Korea. Korea would be the nineth country in the world which could launch space launch vehicle itself. The launch of the 2nd technology satellite of 100kg with KSLV-I would give Korean hope and dream. In addition to the traditional space activities of U.S.A. and Russia, Japan launched the lunar satellite, Kaguya in 2007, China launched the lunar satellite, Change and succeeded in space walk and India launched the lunar satellite Chandrayaan in October, 2008. In this paper we study on the trend of domestic and international development of space launch vehicle considering all these space development activities.

  • Test and launch facilities which use oxygen as the propellant of a launch vehicle have hazards of fire and explosion by the leakage of oxygen. Also, the personnel operating the facilities, which use the high-pressured gases like nitrogen and helium in the closed room, is exposed to the hazard of death from suffocation. Consequently, we should keep out of the hazards and the accidents by monitoring the contents of oxygen in the air. The method and the system construction for monitoring oxygen contents in the air and the results from its application to Naro space center are described on this paper.

  • The NARO is South Korea's first carrier launch vehicle, which made its flights from NARO Space Center on 25 August 2009 and 10 June 2010. LV PACS(Preparation Automated Control System) is a electrical ground support system to monitor and control the integrated launch vehicle during the launch preparation and operation in Launch Complex. As a subsystem of LV PACS, LV PACS-II was developed for launch preparation and operation of the NARO upper stage, and all the functions and requirements were verified successfully through NARO flight tests. In this paper the core technology and characteristics applied to LV PACS-II are described.

  • To lunch the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II(KSLV-II), the second launch complex will be constructed on the Naro Space Center and Kerosene Filling System (KFS) will be also installed newly. KFS of KSLV-II launch complex system is being designed based on Naro Launch Complex. But this must supply fuel to fuel tanks of the vehicle with only a supply pump because KSLV-II is a 3-stage launch vehicle unlike Naro Launch Vehicle or Test Launch Vehicle (TLV). A sudden rise of pump output pressure is recognized during fuel filling scenario selection process. This occurs because return flow can not actively deal with a lot of flow change using flow control method of orifice type. To solve this problem, it is verified that fuel can be stably supplied by installation of accumulator and an appropriate adjustment of filling mode change sequence through flow analysis of various cases.

Novel LTE based Channel Estimation Scheme for V2V Environment (LTE 기반 V2V 환경에서 새로운 채널 추정 기법)

  • Recently, in 3rd Generation Partnership Project(3GPP), there is a study of the Long Term Evolution(LTE) based vehicle communication which has been actively conducted to provide a transport efficiency, telematics and infortainment. Because the vehicle communication is closely related to the safety, it requires a reliable communication. Because vehicle speed is very fast, unlike the movement of the user, radio channel is rapidly changed and generate a number of problems such as transmission quality degradation. Therefore, we have to continuously updates the channel estimates. There are five types of conventional channel estimation scheme. Least Square(LS) is obtained by pilot symbol which is known to transmitter and receiver. Decision Directed Channel Estimation(DDCE) scheme uses the data signal for channel estimation. Constructed Data Pilot(CDP) scheme uses the correlation characteristic between adjacent two data symbols. Spectral Temporal Averaging(STA) scheme uses the frequency-time domain average of the channel. Smoothing scheme reduces the peak error value of data decision. In this paper, we propose the novel channel estimation scheme in LTE based Vehicle-to-Vehicle(V2V) environment. In our Hybrid Reliable Channel Estimation(HRCE) scheme, DDCE and Smoothing schemes are combined and finally the Linear Minimum Mean Square Error(LMMSE) scheme is applied to minimize the channel estimation error. Therefore it is possible to detect the reliable data. In simulation results, overall performance can be improved in terms of Normalized Mean Square Error(NMSE) and Bit Error Rate(BER).

  • The ground oxidizer supply system in the launch site of NARO space center had operated 9 times from the start of tests with ILV on May, 2009 to the 2nd flight test of the NARO vehicle. This system operated successfully for twice launches of the NARO vehicle. To judge the successful operation of the ground facility, it should have reproducibility and reliability. In this report, we have analyzed the liquid oxygen consumption of the system to judge of its reproducibility and it can be a reference for using this system for the next generation of KSLV system.

Operation of the GPS Receiver System for KSLV-I on the Launch Site at Naro Space Center (나로우주센터 발사장에서 나로호 GPS 수신기 시스템의 운용)

  • This paper describes the operation results of the GPS receiver system for KSLV (Korea Space Launch Vehicle)-I on the launch site at Naro Space Center that is the first spaceport of South Korea located at Goheung. All equipments of KSLV-I including the GPS receiver system should be monitored and controlled through hard-wired interface during KSLV-I is on standby at the launch pad. The GPS receiver for KSLV-I is connected to triple almost omni-directional patch antennas mounted on the cylindrical surface of KSLV-I that should be erected vertically on the launch pad until lift-off. Signal interference and multipath effects observed in the GPS receiver on the launch site are analyzed in this paper based on the GPS signals received from each GPS antenna.
