Highly Efficient Green Phosphorescent Organic Light Emitting Diodes

  • We have developed green phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with high quantum efficiency. Wide-energy-gap material, 1,1-bis[(di-4-tolylamino) phenyl]cyclohexane (TAPC), with high triplet energy level was used as a hole transporting layer. Electrophosphorescent devices fabricated using TAPC as a hole-transporting layer and N,N'-dicarbazolyl-4,4'-biphenyl (CBP) doped with fac-tris(2-phenylpyridine) iridium [Ir(ppy)3] as the emitting layer showed the maximum external quantum efficiency ($\eta_{ext}$) of 19.8 %, which is much higher than the devices adopting 4,4'-bis[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenyl-amino]biphenyl (NPB) (${\eta}B_{ext}=14.6%$) as a hole transporting layer.

Phenyl-Naphthyl Amine Effect of New Phenothiazine Derivatives with High Tg for Hole Injection and Hole Transporting Materials

  • We synthesized a new HIL and HTL materials by using phenothiazinly moiety, 1,4-diphenothiazyl-benzene [DPtzB], 3',7',3",7"-tetrakis(N-phenyl-2-naphthylamine)-1,4-diphenothiazyl-benzene[PNA-DPtzB]. Synthesized materials exhibited high Tg in the range of $175\;-\;202^{\circ}C$. These values are much better than commonly used hole transporting materials (2-TNATA and NPB). The OLED device that used DPtzB as a HIL showed the highest efficiency of 4.31cd/A at $10mA/cm^2$.

  • Efficient deep-blue organic light-emitting diodes were demonstrated using 4,4'-bis(9-ethyl-3-carbazovinylene)-1,1'-biphenyl doped in double-emission layers (D-EMLs). The D-EML system, which consists of 2-methyl-9,10-di(2-naphthyl)anthracene and 1,4-(dinaphthalen-2-yl)-naphthalene as blue hosts, was employed to broaden the recombination zone and to ensure the good confinement of the holes and electrons. The optimized device showed a peak current efficiency of 4.47 cd/A, a peak external quantum efficiency of 4.09%, and Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinates of (0.16, 0.10).

  • Feasibility test for radical reactions in organic light emitting diode(OLED) has been applied on OLED consisting of hole transport layer(HTL) and electron transport layer(ETL). Organic molecules such as 4,4',-Bis[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenylamino] biphenyl(NPD) and 4,4',4"-tris(3-methylphenylphenylamino)triphenylamine(m-MTDATA) are chosen for hole transport layer(HTL) and Bathocuproine(BCP) for electron transport layer(ETL) in this study. Informations on energy and shape of frontier orbitals and data on radical reactions of simple aromatics from semiconductor($TiO_2$) photocatalysis have provided basis for determining feasibility for radical reactions in OLED. The outcome of our feasibility test would be useful in designing optimum molecule for organic layer with a view to extending the lifetime of OLED.

  • Two derivatives of star shaped compounds based on naphthylamine benzene고리에 methoxy기와 ethoxy기가 치환기로 연결되어있는 naphthylamine 관련 화합물을 합성하였다. 합성한 화합물의 전자 및 열적특성을 cyclic voltametry (CV) 및 differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)를 이용하여 조사하였다.

  • The fluorescence properties and photoisomerization behavior of 1-(9-anthryl)-2-(n-quinolinyl)ethene (n-AQE, n=2-4) have been investigated in various solvents. t-3-AQE is strongly fluorescent, but does not accomplish photoisomerization, similar to parent hydrocarbon compound, t-1-(9-anthryl)-2-phenylethene (t-9-APE) or t-1-(9-anthryl)-2-(1-naphthyl)ethene (t-1-ANE). Fluorescence and photoisomerization oft-2-AQE and t-4-AQE are strongly affected by solvent polarity. Dependence of fluorescence quantum yield on the solvent polarity is moderate for t-2-AQE and large for t-4-AQE. In nonpolar solvent (in n-hexane), they exhibit relatively strong fluorescence, but do not isomerize to cis isomer on irradiation, even if inefficient isomerization is observed for t-4-AQE. However, as solvent polarity increases, their fluorescences become weak with efficient photoisomerization to corresponding cis isomer. Intramolecular charge-transfer excited state is presumed to contribute to photoisomerization. The S$_1$ decay parameters were found to be solvent-dependent due to the charge-transfer character of lowest S$_1$ state. In polar solvents, the activation barrier to twisting is reduced enhancing the isomerization of r-2-AQE and t-4-AQE in the singlet manifold.

진공에서의 Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs)용 유기재료의 상전이 측정

  • Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED)에 사용되는 유기재료 N,N.-diphenyl-N,N.-bis(1-naphthyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4"-diamine(NPB)의 상전이 특성을 여러 진공도에서 평가하였다. 압력, 온도제어가 가능한 진공시스템을 사용하여 여러 진공도에서 NPB의 상전이 온도를 측정하였고, 본 연구에 사용된 진공시스템의 신뢰성을 검증하기 위해 상압에서 측정한 NPB의 melting temperature를 Differential Scanning Calorimetry(DSC) data와 비교하였다. 또한 각 압력($10^{-7}{\sim}760Torr$)에서 측정한 상전이 온도를 바탕으로 최종 결과물인 NPB의 Phase diagram을 얻어냄으로써 일정 압력, 일정 온도에서의 NPB의 상거동을 예측할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 기존의 DSC열분석으로는 확인하기 어려웠던 진공에서의 유기재료의 상전이를 관측하였다는데 큰 의미가 있다. 향후, 이러한 방법을 활용한 진공에서의 유기재료의 상전이 특성 관측은 유기재료를 이용한 진공 증착공정방법의 최적화와, 다양한 유기재료의 열안정성 특성 파악에 도움이 될 것으로 기대가 된다.

  • Liquid chromatographic direct resolution of racemic naphthyl propionate liquid crystals were successful on a commercial chiral column, (S,S)-Whelk-O1. The very simple procedure can be applied to the intermediate and final products without any structural modification.

  • We report on a highly conductive and stable hole transporting layer comprising of N,N'-di(1- naphthyl)-N,N'-diphenylbenzidine $({\alpha}\;-NPD)$ doped with molybdenum oxide $(MoO_3)$. Compared to the reference device, the device with $MoO_3-doped$ hole transporting material exhibits higher conductivity and thermal stability. The temperature dependence of the current-voltage characteristics are studied for various $(MoO_3)$ doping concentration.

  • Some allylamine compounds which are benzothiazole substituants in stead of naphthyl ring in naftifine, antifungal agents, were synthesized as potential antimycotics. The interme diate Schiff bases that were obtained by condensation of 2-aminobenzothiazole and trans-cinnamaldehyde, were reduced to imine compounds to give allylamines (5a-5d) after methylation. These compounds which were tested in vitro against five fungal cell lines containing Trichophyton mentagrophytes, showed no activity in 0.1~100${\mu}$g/ml range.
