  • Topology and molecular ordering of NPD(4,4'-bis-[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenyl-amino]biphenyl) thin films deposited under magnetic field with post-deposition annealing were investigated. NPD was deposited onto ITO glass substrates via thermal evaporation process in vacuum. It is of great importance for highly oriented organic/metal films to have improved device performances such as higher current density and luminance efficiency. AFM (Atomic Force Microscope) and XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) analyses were used to characterize the topology and structure of oriented NPD films. The multi-source meter was used to observe the current-voltage characteristics of the ITO (Indium-Tin Oxide) / NPD (4,4'bis[N-(1-napthyl)-N-phenyl-amino]-biphenyl) / Al (Aluminum) device. While NPD thin films deposited under magnetic field were not molecularly well aligned according to the XRD results, the films after post-deposition annealing at $130^{\circ}C$ were well-oriented. AFM images show that NPD thin films deposited under magnetic field had a smoother surface than those deposited without magnetic field. The current-voltage performance of NPD thin films was improved due to the enhanced electron mobility in the well-aligned NPD films.

  • In order to examine the relationship of fruit abscission and ethylene evolution in 'Jojuro' and 'Imamuraaki' pear trees, the thinning chemicals, ${\beta}$-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), O, O-dimethyl-O-(3-methyl-4 nitrophenyl) posphorothioate (MEP), 1-naphthyl N-methyl carbamate (carbaryl), and 2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid (ethephon) were applied. Concurrently the effect of calcium acetate on the control of fruit abscission were examined when calcium acetate was added to ethephon and carbaryl. 1. All the applied chemicals (MEP, NAA, carbaryl and ethephon) was effective to abscise fruits in 'Jojuro', and MEP and carbaryl in 'Imamuraaki's. 2. The application of ethephon increased the ethylene evolution but other chemicals did not increase it. 3. There were no significant differences in total sugar contents of fruits by MEP, NAA, carbaryl and ethephon treatments. 4. When the calcium acetate was added to the ethephon and carbaryl, the thinning effects were offsetted. 5. The rate of defoliation due to ethephon treatment was controlled by addition of calcium acetate at 0.1~0.25 M. It was clarified that fruit abscission induced by thinning chemicals except ethephon was not directly related to ethylene production and that degree of fruit thinning can be regulated by addition of calcium acetate to thinning chemicals.

  • Morphogenetic responses were investigated by culturing embryo and leaf explants of Korean wild type tea plant, Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze. Induction of direct somatic embryogenesis as well as adventitious and/or axillary shoots was obtained from mature zygotic embryo cultures on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium having 5 to $20\mu\textrm{M}$cytokinin a lone. Morphogenetic response was decreased dramatically by the addition of auxins tested. One hundred percent of induced and isolated shoots formed roots after four weeks of culture on half-strength MS or quarter-strength Schenk and Hildebrandt (SH) media supplemented with $10\mu\textrm{M}$indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). Immature zygotic embryos were shown to be a suitable explant for embryogenic callus formation in the presence of 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid(2, 4-D) in basal medium. Mature zygotic embryo originated leaves were used to test their ability for mophogenesis by incorporating plant growth regulators such as IBA, naphthyl-1-acetic acid (NAA), and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). Apparently, the morphogenetic responses of the cultured explant sources on the types and/or levels of plant growth regulators tested were observed visually.

  • Eight-membered ring spiro orthocarbonate (C$_{25}H_{20}O_4$, M$_r$ = 384) is monoclinic, space group C2/c, with a = 15.319(4), b = 9.057(3), c = 13.168(3)${\AA}$, ${\beta}$ = 98.53(3)$^{\circ}$, Z = 4, F(000) = 808, T = 290 K, ${\mu}$(Mo-K${\alpha}$) = 0.55 cm$_1$, D$_c$ = 1.36 g/cm$^3$ and D$_m$ = 1.40 g/cm$^3$. The intensity data were collected with Mo-K${\alpha}$ radiation (${\lambda}$ = 0.7107 ${\AA}$) on an automatic four-circle diffractometer with a graphite monochromater. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by full matrix least-squares methods. The final R value was 0.052 for 1412 observed reflections. The molecule has C$_2$point symmetry. The eight-membered ring has a chair conformation with pseudo-C$_s$ symmetry. The naphthyl ring is planar with the C-C bond lengths being in the range of 1.352∼1.444${\AA}$ and bond angles of 117.2∼123.5$^{\circ}$. The bond lengths of C(1)-C(9), C(8)-C(9) and C(9)-C(10) are somewhat longer than those of the other C-C bonds.

  • A thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(TLCP) which has flexible butylene/hexylene spacers in the main chain and a triad aromatic ester type mesogenic unit containing a naphthyl group was prepared by solution polycondensation. The in-situ composites based on poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) and a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(TLCP) were prepared and melt spun at different TLCP contents and different draw ratios to produce monofilaments. Blends of the TLCP with PEN were investigated in terms of thermal, mechanical properties and morphology. The TLCP synthesized showed nematic mesophasic behavior and its transition temperature to isotropic melt from mesophase was 249℃. The blends showed well dispersed TLCP phases in the PEN matrix without macroscopic phase separation. Inclusion of TLCP in the blends decreased the cold crystallization temperature of PEN in the blend, therefore, the TLCP acts as a nucleating agent in the blend and showed good interfacial adhesion between the dispersed LCP phases and PEN matrix with domain sizes 40~50 nm in diameter and well developed fibrillation in the monofilaments. The TLCP acted effectively as a reinforcing material in the PEN matrix at the 10wt% level, it led to an increase of initial modulus up to 270% and tensile strength by 235%, while the elongation rate increasing with higher draw ratios.

  • CTA ester bonds in TG molecules were not attacked by pancreatic lipase and lipases produced by microbes such as Candida cylindracea, Chromobacterium viscosum, Geotricum candidium, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Rhizophus delemar, R. arrhizus and Mucor miehei. An aliquot of total TG of all the seed oils and each TG fraction of the oils collected from HPLC runs were deuterated prior to partial hydrolysis with Grignard reagent, because CTA molecule was destroyed with treatment of Grignard reagent. Deuterated TG (dTG) was hydrolyzed partially to a mixture of deuterated diacylglycerols (dDG), which were subsequently reacted with (S)-(+)-1-(1-naphthyl)ethyl isocyanate to derivatize into dDG-NEUs. Purified dDG-NEUs were resolved into 1, 3-, 1, 2- and 2, 3-dDG-NEU on silica columns in tandem of HPLC using a solvent of 0.4% propan-1-o1 (containing 2% water)-hexane. An aliquot of each dDG-NEU fraction was hydrolyzed and (fatty acid-PFB ester). These derivatives showed a diagnostic carboxylate ion, $(M-1)^{-}$, as parent peak and a minor peak at m/z 196 $(PFB-CH_{3})^{-}$ on NICI mass spectra. In the mass spectra of the fatty acid-PFB esters of dTGs derived from the seed oils of T. kilirowii and M. charantia, peaks at m/z 285, 287, 289 and 317 were observed, which corresponded to $(M-1)^{-}$ of deuterized oleic acid ($d_{2}-C_{18:0}$), linoleic acid ($d_{4}-C_{18:0}$), punicic acid ($d_{6}-C_{18:0}$) and eicosamonoenoic acid ($d_{2}-C_{20:0}$), respectively. Fatty acid compositions of deuterized total TG of each oil measured by relative intensities of $(M-1)^-$ ion peaks were similar with those of intact TG of the oils by GLC. The composition of fatty acid-PFB esters of total dTG derived from the seed oils of T. kilirowii are as follows; $C_{16:0}$, 4.6 mole % (4.8 mole %, intact TG by GLC), $C_{18:0}$, 3.0 mole % (3.1 mole %), $d_{2}C_{18:0}$, 11.9 mole % (12.5 mole %, sum of $C_{18:1{\omega}9}$ and $C_{18:1{\omega}7}$), $d_{4}-C_{18:0}$, 39.3 mole % (38.9 mole %, sum of $C_{18:2{\omega}6}$ and its isomer), $d_{6}-C_{18:0}$, 41.1 mole % (40.5 mole %, sum of $C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13c}$, $C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13r}$ and $C_{18:3\;9t,11t,13c}$), $d_{2}-C_{20:0}$, 0.1 mole % (0.2 mole % of $C_{20:1{\omega}9}$). In total dTG derived from the seed oils of M. charantia, the fatty acid components are $C_{16:0}$, 1.5 mole % (1.8 mole %, intact TG by GLC), $C_{18:0}$, 12.0 mole % (12.3 mole %), $d_{2}-C_{18:0}$, 16.9 mole % (17.4 mole %, sum of $C_{18:1{\omega}9}$), $d_{4}-C_{18:0}$, 11.0 mole % (10.6 mole %, sum of $C_{18:2{\omega}6}$), $d_{6}-C_{18:0}$, 58.6 mole % (57.5 mole %, sum of $C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13t}$ and $C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13c}$). In the case of Aleurites fordii, $C_{16:0}$; 2.2 mole % (2.4 mole %, intact TG by GLC), $C_{18:0}$; 1.7 mole % (1.7 mole %), $d_{2}-C_{18:0}$; 5.5 mole % (5.4 mole %, sum of $C_{18:1{\omega}9}$), $d_{4}-C_{18:0}$ ; 8.3 mole % (8.5 mole %, sum of $C_{18:2{\omega}6}$), $d_{6}-C_{18:0}$; 82.0 mole % (81.2 mole %, sum of $C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13t}$ and $C_{18:3 9c,11t,13c})$. In the stereospecific analysis of fatty acid distribution in the TG species of the seed oils of T. kilirowii, $C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13r}$ and $C_{18:2{\omega}6}$ were mainly located at sn-2 and sn-3 position, while saturated acids were usually present at sn-1 position. And the major molecular species of $(C_{18:2{\omega}6})(C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13c})_{2}$ and $(C_{18:1{\omega}9})(C_{18:2{\omega}6})(C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13c})$ were predominantly composed of the stereoisomer of $sn-1-C_{18:2{\omega}6}$, $sn-2-C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13c}$, $sn-3-C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13c}$, and $sn-1-C_{18:1{\omega}9}$, $sn-2-C_{18:2{\omega}6}$, $sn-3-C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13c}$, respectively, and the minor TG species of $(C_{18:2{\omega}6})_{2}(C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13c})$ and $ (C_{16:0})(C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13c})_{2}$ mainly comprised the stereoisomer of $sn-1-C_{18:2{\omega}6}$, $sn-2-C_{18:2{\omega}6}$, $sn-3-C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13c}$ and $sn-1-C_{16:0}$, $sn-2-C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13c}$, $sn-3-C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13c}$. The TG of the seed oils of Momordica charantia showed that most of CTA, $C_{18:3\;9c,11t,13r}$, occurred at sn-3 position, and $C_{18:2{\omega}6}$ was concentrated at sn-1 and sn-2 compared to sn-3.
