We investigate the structure and properties of SiC (Silicon Carbide) nanotubes using molecular dynamics simulation based on the Tersoff bond-order potential. For small diameter tubes, the Si-C bond distance of SiC nanotubes decreases as the nanotube diameter is decreased, due to curvature of the nanotube surface. We find that Young's modulus of SiC nanotubes is somewhat smaller than that of the other nanotubes considered so far. However, Young's modulus for SiC nanotubes is larger than that of ${\beta}$-SiC and almost equal to the experimental value for SiC nanorod and SiC whisker. The strain energy of the SiC nanotubes is also lower than that of the other nanotubes. The lower strain energy of SiC nanotubes raises the possibility of synthesis of SiC nanotubes.
Carbon nanotube is a geometrical frame-like structure and the primary bonds between two nearest-neighboring atoms act like beam members, whereas an individual atom acts as the joint of the related beam members. The sectional property parameters of these beam members are obtained from molecular mechanics. Computations of the elastic deformation of single-walled carbon nanotubes reveal that the Young's moduli of carbon nanotubes vary with the tube diameter and are affected by their helicity. With increasing tube diameter, the Young's moduli of carbon nanotubes approach the Young's modulus of graphite.
Increase of surface area and decrease of band gap in $TiO_2$ semiconductors are significant to improve the efficiency of water splitting by photoelectrolysis. In this study $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays with ~7 um length and ~100 nm diameter were fabricated by an anodizing technique of titanium foils using DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide)-based electrolytes. Then to control the band gap of the $TiO_2$ arrays, they were annealed at $550^{\circ}C$ for up to 180 min in $NH_3$ gas ambient. The samples annealed in $NH_3$ gas for 30 min and 60 min showed superior photo-conversion efficiency for water splitting under white and visible light. A $TiO_2$ nanotube annealed in $NH_3$ gas ambient for a period longer than 120 min showed 1 order higher leakage current. It is believed that the decrease of band gap and increase of conductivity in $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays due to $NH_3$ gas treatments result in the superior water-splitting performance.
Recently, high-thermal-conductivity graphene and carbon nanotube nanoparticles have attracted particularly close attention from researchers. In the present study, the thermal conductivity and viscosity properties of two kinds of graphene and carbon nanotube nanofluids added to distilled water - two graphenes and carbon nanotubes of differing size - were compared and analyzed. The thermal conductivities of the nanofluids, formulated in the usual manner by adding graphene and carbon nanotube to distilled water and subjecting the mixture to ultrasonic dispersion, were measured by the transient hot-wire method, and the viscosities were determined using a rotational digital viscometer. As a result, we concluded that the nanofluid of small particle diameter of graphene have outstanding properties as heat transfer media, due to their excellent thermal conductivity and viscosity, compared with the other nanofluid.
Self-standing $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays were fabricated by potentiostatic anodic oxidation method using pure Ti foil as a working electrode and ethylene glycol solution as electrolytes with small addition of $NH_4F$ and $H_2O$. The influences of anodization temperature and time on the morphology and formation of $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays were investigated. The fabricated $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays were applied as a photoelectrode to dye-sensitized solar cells. Regardless of anodizing temperature and time, the average diameter and wall thickness of $TiO_2$ nanotube show a similar value, whereas the thickness show a different trend with reaction temperature. The thickness of $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays anodized at $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$ was time-dependent, but on the other hand its at $10^{\circ}C$ are independent of anodization time. The conversion efficiency is low, which is due to a morphology breaking of the $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays in manufacturing process of photoelectrode.
Titanium and titanium alloys are widely used for orthopedic and dental implants for their superior mechanical properties, low modulus, excellent corrosion resistance and good biocompatibility. In this study, corrosion behaviors of nanotube formed on the bone plate of Ti-6Al-4V alloy for dental use have been investigated. $TiO_2$ nanotubes were formed on the dental bone plates by anodization in $H_3PO_4$ containing 0.6 wt % NaF solution at $25^{\circ}C$. Electrochemical experiments were performed using a conventional three-electrode configuration with a platinum counter electrode and a saturated calomel reference electrode. Anodization was carried out using a scanning potentiostat (EG&G Co, Model 263A USA), and all experiments were conducted at room temperature. The surface morphology was observed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy(EDS). The corrosion behavior of the dental bone plates was examined using potentiodynamic test(potential range of -1500~2000 mV) in a 0.9% NaCl solution by potentiostat (EG&G Co, PARSTAT 2273. USA). The inner diameter of nanotube was about 150~180 nm with wall thickness of about 20 nm. The interspace of nanotube to nanotube was 50 nm. The passive region of the nanotube formed bone plates showed the broad range compared to non-nanotube formed bone plates. The corrosion surface of sample was covered with corrosion products.
Synthesis of Carbon Nanotube bundles has been achieved by simple and economical solvothermal procedure at very low temperature of $180^{\circ}C$. The product yield obtained was about 70-75%. The optimization of reaction conditions for an efficient synthesis of CNTs has been presented. The CNTs are obtained by reduction of hexachlorobenzene in the presence of Na/Ni in cyclohexane. The X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectral studies have inferred us the graphene structure of the products. The CNTs formed as the bundles were viewed on scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and high-resolution transmission electron microscope. These are the multiwalled CNTs with outer diameter of 5-10 nm, the inner diameter 2-4 nm and cross sectional diameter up to 5 nm. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) based $N_2$ gas adsorption studies have been made to obtain BET surface area and $H_2$ storage capacity. Effect of the experimental variables such as reaction temperature, amount of catalyst and the amount of carbon source were investigated. It is found that they affect significantly on the product nature and yield.
A carbon nanotube field emission display(CNT FED) panel with a 2 inch diagonal size was fabricated using a screen printing of a prepared photo-sensitive CNT paste and vacuum in-line sealing technology. After a surface treatment of the patterned CNT, only the carbon nanotube tips are uniformly exposed on the surface. The diameter of the exposed CNTs are usually about 20 nm. Using the photo-sensitive CNT paste, we have developed a triode type CNT FEA with a self-aligned gate-emitter structure. The turn on voltage was around 100 V which corresponds to according the turn on field of about $40V/{\mu}m$. By the creation of a self-aligned gate-emitter structure, it is expected that the screen printed photo-sensitive CNT paste is promising as a good candidate for the large size field emission display.

Polyimide/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite films, for potential use in high performance microelectronics and aerospace applications, were prepared by mixing a polyisoimide (PII) solution and a CNT suspension in NMP, followed by casting, evaporation and thermal imidization. The CNTs were modified by a nitric acid treatment to improve the thermal and electrical properties, as well as to provide good dispersion of the CNTs in a polymer matrix. The formation of functional groups on the modified CNT was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the modified CNTs to be well dispersed in the polyimide matrix, with a uniform diameter of ca. 50 nm. The thermal stability of the films containing the CNTs was improved due to the enhanced interfacial interaction and good dispersion between the polyimide matrix and modified CNTs. In addition, the thermal expansion coefficient of the composites films was slightly decreased, but the dielectric constants increased linearly with increasing CNT content.
