Dimethylaminopropyl methacryamide was photografted onto PET fabrics by continuous UV irradiation under ambient conditions. Several factors affecting the photografting were studied including irradiation energy, monomer and photoinitiator concentrations. ATR and ESCA analysis showed the successful grafting of the monomer onto the PET surface. The grafted PET fabrics showed higher zeta potentials below pH 7 compared with the ungrafted PET. The dyeability of the grafted PET fabrics to two $\alpha$-bromoacrylamide reactive dyes was investigated under various dyeing conditions including dye concentration, pH, dyeing temperature and time. The grafting imparted the reactive dyeability to PET fabrics, which was proportional to the grafted monomer content. The reactive dyeing behavior of the grafted PET fabrics was similar to that of conventional wool fabrics.
ABS/MWNT nanocomposites were prepared by using MWNT wrapped with SAN through melt compounding. Effect of wrapping of MWNT by SAN on the morphology, mechanical and electrical properties of ABS/MWNT were analyzed. It was found that SAN could wrap MWNT effectively indicated by the increased thickness after wrapping, which is presumably due to helical structure of polyacrylonitrile component in a block copolymer of SAN. MWNT was observed to be dispersed more evenly in ABS matrix by SAN wrapping, which resulted in improved tensile properties of the composites. On the other hand, there was little effect on the impact strength and electrical properties of ABS having inherently high impact strength.
Breathable waterproof PET fabrics were prepared by the UV coating of UV-curable polyurethaneacrylate(PUA) formulation mixed with polyethyleneglycol(PEG) as a water soluble pore former. The dispersed PEG in the UV-cured coating was extracted by warm water, which can generate individual circular pores uniformly distributed all over the coating instead of pore channels. Accordingly the moisture permeability of the microporously coated fabrics increased substantially with increasing PEG addition without significant reduction of hydrostatic pressure. Also the silicone diacrylate addition in the formulation was beneficial in increasing the hydrostatic pressure. The UV-based microporous coating can be an alternative to conventional thermal curing of solventborne polyurethane coating owing to the enhanced environment friendliness and energy saving.
Polyethylene(PE) films were photocrosslinked by continuous UV irradiation. Benzophenone addition as low as 1wt% into the PE film increased the gel fraction up to 96%. The photocrosslinking was attributed to the recombination of PE radicals generated upon UV irradiation, which was enhanced by the hydrogen abstraction of the added benzophenone. Also the crossliked PE showed higher thermal stability and decreased crystallinity with increasing UV energy as shown by TGA, XRD and DSC analysis. It was also possible to fix 5.4% octadecane into PE by the photocrosslinking. The crosslinked PE film containing octadecane showed lower tensile strength and modulus coupled with higher extension compared to that without octadecane, which can be used as a new plasticizing method for the crosslinked PE film.
Flame-retardant cotton fabrics were prepared by UV curing of photocurable aqueous formulations of phosphorous-containing methacrylate monomers and 2-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-phenyl-1-propanone as flame retardants and a photoinitiator respectively, which is an environmentally friendly and energy-saving process. The characterization of the UV-coated cotton fabric was made by ATR, TGA and limited oxygen index measurement. UV cured coating onto cotton fabrics reduced the first thermal decomposition temperature and mass loss as well as increase in the amount of char residue compared with the untreated cotton fabric presumably due to modified thermal decomposition process. The LOI values up to 28.5 and 27.2 were obtained by the UV curing of MMEP and TMEP respectively. The treatment was durable to five laundering cycles, which was more prominent in the case of trifunctional TMEP treatment.
UV-curable water-repellent finish was carried out to impart one-side repellency to the PET fabrics using a formulation of a UV-active fluorocarbon agent and a water soluble photoinitiator. The aqueous formulation was padded on the PET fabrics and it was subsequently UV-cured. The unirradiated side of the cured fabrics was made to wetteable to water by the prolonged UV/ozone irradiation. The influence of photoinitiator concentration, agent concentration and UV energy for photodegradation on the performance of the finished fabrics were investigated. The difference in the functional property of front and back sides was examined by measuring water repellency at each side of the treated fabrics, which resulted in four rating difference between two-side. The UV-cured and photodegraded PET surfaces were characterized by ATR, ESCA and FE-SEM.

Aramid fabrics were photooxidized by UV/$O_3$ irradiation. The UV irradiation caused the oxygen content of the aramid fabric surface to increase and reduced the surface zeta potential, coupled with improved water wettability. The modified aramid fabrics showed higher affinity to cationic dyes which may be resultd from the newly introduced electrostatic interaction between cationic dyes and anionic dyeing sites on the photooxidized surface layers. Although color fastness to both staining and rubbing were good to excellent, color fastness to shade change was moderate.
Due to enhanced high IT (information technology) development, IT-based technology convergences such as IT/ET(electric technology), IT/BT(biology technology) and IT/NT(nano technology) are actively merging trend and their applications spread wide. In this paper PLC (power line communication), one of the merging IT, is investigated as one of the potential IT candidates for IT/ET and IT/BT convergence technology for DLC (direct load control) or bio-medical engineering such as ubiquitous health cares or D2H2 (distributed diagnosis and home health care).
