  • In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) optical fiber tip sensor fabricated by a blade-sawing technique using a fiber optic patch cord for high-resolution temperature measurement. The sensor head consists of a short air FP cavity near the tip of a single-mode fiber patch cord tip. The temperature which we can measure is determined through a phase variation of the interference fringes in the reflective spectrum of the sensor. The fiber optic FPI sensor in this work can monitor the environmental temperature very accurately from 40 to $120^{\circ}C$. As a result, the temperature sensitivity is obtained as $38.2pm/^{\circ}C$.

  • Photoconductive three-wire folded dipole antennas for terahertz photomixers have been developed. The folded antennas are characterized by a free space time-domain measurement technique, and the measured data are in good agreement with the simulation results. The folded dipole antennas have much higher antenna resistance than other resonant dipole antennas, implying that they can be used for higher output power of THz photomixers.

  • For an arc-flash protection system, the selection of arc-flash sensor in implementation is largely dependent on the coverage area and the spatial resolution. Typically, a point sensor is used to accurately measure an arc event within a very narrow region; whereas, a loop or a line sensor can cover several electrical compartment at the same time, but with a poor resolution. In this work, a novel scheme for an arc-flash sensor was developed by making use of the transmission loss of plastic optical fibers (POFs) to cover a broad range with a high spatial resolution. By relating the amplitude ratio of the arc-signals at the ends of the POF with the arc-location, arc events could be located with a resolution of ~5 cm within a spatial range of 10 m, which has not been reported yet.

  • In this work, a loop sensor for Arc-Flash detections has been developed in order to trip a circuit breaker within 2.5 ms after an Arc-Flash event. For an efficient capturing of the flash light, plastic optical fibers, where light attenuations are larger than those in silica-based ones, with different diameters and surface conditions were utilized. The performance was comparatively analyzed with those of a point sensor and a commercialized product. The point sensor module was designed for hemisphere-like capturings of Arc-Flashes larger than 3 kA at 2 meters from the sensor. On the other hand, the loop sensor allowed 360-degree-detections around the fiber axis and the measurement range was dependent on the length of the fiber connected to the sensor module. The trip-level-dependent brightness measurement results showed that the fabricated point sensor and loop sensor satisfied a brightness condition, 10~40 klux, and the responses of the system to Arc-Flashes were completed within 2.5 ms.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of a humidity sensor implemented by Mach Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) in a Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) have been designed and demonstrated. The humidity outside is detected with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) coated on the etched arm of the MZI. The length of the etched arm is 10 mm and the PVP was coated by dip-coating into the etched region. As the refractive index of the PVP changes with the surrounding humidity, the PVP-coated humidity sensor presented changes in the interferogram depending on RH (Relative Humidity) around the PLC. The measured results show that the proposed humidity sensor works successfully in the range of 30% to 80% of RH.

  • Optically pumped THz emission has been observed in a wide range of semiconductors, and this process is an important practical source of pulsed THz radiation for time-domain THz spectroscopy and THz imaging. We show that InAs quantum dots on GaAs can be used to significantly enhance THz emission compared with a bare GaAs surface.

  • The simulation on the mechanism of terahertz NSOM(near-field scanning optical microscopy) have been investigated. Based on experimental results, we have demonstrated the antenna effects on the coupling between a metal tip and substrate for an emission-type terahertz NSOM. It has been found that the lateral resolution can be estimated by a simplified model using an infinitesimal dipole in the substrate.

  • In the paper, we fabricated a Ni master with $45^{\circ}$-mirror structures for flexible waveguide fabrication. The flexible waveguide films with embedded $45^{\circ}$-angled mirrors at the waveguide ends were successfully fabricated using a UV-imprint process. Next, in order to enhance the reflectivity of the mirrors, Ni(3 nm)-Au(200 nm) bilayers were evaporated on the $45^{\circ}$-angled facets through a locally opened thin mask using an electron beam evaporator. We measured propagation loss, bending loss, mirror loss and bending reliability of the fabricated waveguide.

  • Heretofore, it was enough that most of optical transceiver modules for automotive networks have the performance of data rate from 10 Mbps to 150 Mbps. As the required data rate in automotive infotainment systems has recently been increasing, the development of a new optical transceiver having high speed data rate over 1Gbps is now required. Therefore, we suggested a next-generation bi-directional optical transceiver module using vertical cavity surface emitting laser technology and plastic clad fiber technology, for the next-generation automotive optical network, MOST1000. We fabricated the high-speed and compact optical transceiver having 1 Gbps data rate and -22 dBm sensitivity satisfying bit error rate $10^{-12}$.
