  • Many research works have been conducted to improve a lubrication performance on diesel engines working in severe conditions. In this study the lubricant containing diamond nano-powder is applied on a diesel engine, and the engine performance is analyzed. The concentration of nano-diamond lubricant fabricated by the matrix synthesis dispersion method is varied. The test results with the nano lubricants are compared with the base oil. The result shows the improvement of efficiency with friction reduction and exhaust emissions reduction of CO, smoke and so on.

  • Friction behavior of nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) film was investigated. A 60 ${\mu}m$ thick AAO film having nanopores of 45 nm diameter with 105 nm interpore-diatance was fabricated by mild anodization process. The AAO film was then saturated with paraffinic oil. Reciprocating ball-on-flat sliding friction tests using 1 mm diameter steel ball as the counterpart were carried out with normal load ranging from 0.1 N to 1 N in an ambient environment. The morphology of worn surfaces were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. The friction coefficient significantly increased with the increase of load. The boundary lubrication layer of paraffinic oil contributed to the lower friction at relatively low load (0.1 N), but it is less effective at high load (1 N). Plastic deformed layer patches were formed on the worn surface of oil-enriched AAO at relatively low load (0.1 N) without evidence of tribochemical reaction. On the other hand, thick tribolayers were formed on the worn surface of both oil-enriched and as-prepared AAO at relatively high load (1 N) due to tribochemical reaction and material transfer.

  • Recent researches on nanofluids have mainly focused on the increase of thermal conductivity of nanofluids under static condition. The ultimate goal of using nanofluids, however, is to enhance the heat transfer performance under fluid flow. So it has been highly necessary to devise a simple and accurate measuring apparatus which effectively compares the heat transfer capability between the base and nanofluids. Though the convective heat transfer coefficient is not the complete index for the heat transfer capability, it might be one of useful indications of heat transfer enhancement. In this article, the working principles of experimental system for convective heat transfer coefficient around a heated fine wire in cross flow of nanofluids and its application example to three samples of nano lubrication oils are explained in detail.

  • Bearings of marine engines are operated under severe conditions because of dynamic load and low sliding speed. This paper deals with lubrication analysis of a crank pin bearing for a marine diesel engine. Journal center locus and oil film thickness are compared of crank pin bearing. In the past researches, journal bearings have been studied only about the surface of bearing. In addition to this conventional research, this paper analyzes the effect of roundness error of a journal and a bearing on the minimum film thickness. Numerical analysis has been studied by using Reynolds equation and also Half-Sommerfeld condition is applied as boundary condition. Futhermore, this study investigates the effect of roundness error change on the minimum film thickness. The results demonstrate that the bigger amplitude of roundness error yields, the lower minimum oil film thickness is. In comparison to previous research considered a journal and a bearing individually, the results considering a journal and a bearing together show that amplitude of roundness error of journal has very little effect on the minimum oil film thickness.
