  • Named entity recognition (NER) seeks to locate and classify named entities in text into pre-defined categories such as names of persons, organizations, locations, expressions of times, etc. Recently, many state-of-the-art NER systems have been implemented with bidirectional LSTM CRFs. Deep learning models based on long short-term memory (LSTM) generally depend on word representations as input. In this paper, we propose an approach to expand word representation by using pre-trained word embedding, part of speech (POS) tag embedding, syllable embedding and named entity dictionary feature vectors. Our experiments show that the proposed approach creates useful word representations as an input of bidirectional LSTM CRFs. Our final presentation shows its efficacy to be 8.05%p higher than baseline NERs with only the pre-trained word embedding vector.

  • Now named-entity recognition(NER) as a part of information extraction has been used in the fields of information retrieval as well as question-answering systems. Unlike words, named-entities(NEs) are generated and changed steadily in documents on the Web, newspapers, and so on. The NE generation causes an unknown word problem and makes many application systems with NER difficult. In order to alleviate this problem, this paper proposes a new feature generation method for machine learning-based NER. In general features in machine learning-based NER are related with words, but entities in named-entity dictionaries are related to phrases. So the entities are not able to be directly used as features of the NER systems. This paper proposes an encoding scheme as a feature generation method which converts phrase entities into features of word units. Futhermore, due to this scheme, entities with semantic information in WordNet can be converted into features of the NER systems. Through our experiments we have shown that the performance is increased by about 6% of F1 score and the errors is reduced by about 38%.

  • Since Web pages contain a lot of information today, the Web becomes an important resource to extract some information. In this paper, we proposes a set expansion system which can automatically extract named entities from the Web. Overall, the proposed method consists of three steps. First of all, Web pages, which may include many named entities of a domain, are collected by using several seed words of the domain. Then some pattern rules are extracted by using seed words and the collected Web pages, and the named entity candidates are selected through applying the extracted pattern rules into Web pages. To distinguish real named entities, we develop the new mutual importance measurement method which estimates the importance of named entity candidates. We conducted experiments for 3 domains for Korean and for 8 domains for English. As a result, the proposed method obtained 78.72% MAP in Korean and 96.48% MAP in English. In particular, the performances of English domains are better than the results of the Google set.

  • Named entity recognition (NER) continues to be an important task in natural language processing because it is featured as a subtask and/or subproblem in information extraction and machine translation. In Urdu language processing, it is a very difficult task. This paper proposes various deep recurrent neural network (DRNN) learning models with word embedding. Experimental results demonstrate that they improve upon current state-of-the-art NER approaches for Urdu. The DRRN models evaluated include forward and bidirectional extensions of the long short-term memory and back propagation through time approaches. The proposed models consider both language-dependent features, such as part-of-speech tags, and language-independent features, such as the "context windows" of words. The effectiveness of the DRNN models with word embedding for NER in Urdu is demonstrated using three datasets. The results reveal that the proposed approach significantly outperforms previous conditional random field and artificial neural network approaches. The best f-measure values achieved on the three benchmark datasets using the proposed deep learning approaches are 81.1%, 79.94%, and 63.21%, respectively.

  • Named entity recognition (NER) technique can play a crucial role in extracting information from the web. While NER systems with relatively high performances have been developed based on careful manipulation of terms with a statistical model, term mismatches often degrade the performance of such systems because the strings of all the candidate entities are not known a priori. Despite the importance of lexical-level term mismatches for NER systems, however, most NER approaches developed to date utilize only the term string itself and simple term-level features, and do not exploit the semantic features of terms which can handle the variations of terms effectively. As a solution to this problem, here we propose to match the semantic concepts of term units in restaurant named entities (NEs), where these units are automatically generated from multiple resolutions of a semantic tree. As a test experiment, we applied our restaurant NER scheme to 49,153 nouns in Korean restaurant web pages. Our scheme achieved an average accuracy of 87.89% when applied to test data, which was considerably better than the 78.70% accuracy obtained using the baseline system.

  • This paper introduces an integrated model for systematically constructing a linguistic resource database that can be used by machine learning-based biomedical information extraction systems. The proposed method suggests an orderly process of collecting and constructing dictionaries and training sets for both named-entity recognition and relation extraction. Multiple heterogeneous structures for the resources which are collected from diverse sources are analyzed to derive essential items and fields for constructing the integrated database. All the collected resources are converted and refined to build an integrated linguistic resource storage. In this paper, we constructed entity dictionaries of gene, protein, disease and drug, which are considered core linguistic elements or core named entities in the biomedical domains and conducted verification tests to measure their acceptability.

  • Large-scaled information extraction plays an important role in advanced information retrieval as well as question answering and summarization. Information extraction can be defined as a process of converting unstructured documents into formalized, tabular information, which consists of named-entity recognition, terminology extraction, coreference resolution and relation extraction. Since all the elementary technologies have been studied independently so far, it is not trivial to integrate all the necessary processes of information extraction due to the diversity of their input/output formation approaches and operating environments. As a result, it is difficult to handle scientific documents to extract both named-entities and technical terms at once. In order to extract these entities automatically from scientific documents at once, we developed a framework for scientific core entity extraction which embraces all the pivotal language processors, named-entity recognizer and terminology extractor.

  • Chinese named entity recognition (NER) is a challenging work that seeks to find, recognize and classify various types of information elements in unstructured text. Due to the Chinese text has no natural boundary like the spaces in the English text, Chinese named entity identification is much more difficult. At present, most deep learning based NER models are developed using a bidirectional long short-term memory network (BiLSTM), yet the performance still has some space to improve. To further improve their performance in Chinese NER tasks, we propose a new NER model, IDCNN-BiLSTM-Highway, which is a combination of the BiLSTM, the iterated dilated convolutional neural network (IDCNN) and the highway network. In our model, IDCNN is used to achieve multiscale context aggregation from a long sequence of words. Highway network is used to effectively connect different layers of networks, allowing information to pass through network layers smoothly without attenuation. Finally, the global optimum tag result is obtained by introducing conditional random field (CRF). The experimental results show that compared with other popular deep learning-based NER models, our model shows superior performance on two Chinese NER data sets: Resume and Yidu-S4k, The F1-scores are 94.98 and 77.59, respectively.

  • The advent of transformer architectures in deep learning has been a major breakthrough in natural language processing research. Object name recognition is a branch of natural language processing and is an important research area for tasks such as information retrieval. It is also important in the biomedical field, but the lack of Korean biomedical corpora for training has limited the development of Korean clinical research using AI. In this study, we built a new biomedical corpus for Korean biomedical entity name recognition and selected language models pre-trained on a large Korean corpus for transfer learning. We compared the name recognition performance of the selected language models by F1-score and the recognition rate by tag, and analyzed the errors. In terms of recognition performance, KlueRoBERTa showed relatively good performance. The error analysis of the tagging process shows that the recognition performance of Disease is excellent, but Body and Treatment are relatively low. This is due to over-segmentation and under-segmentation that fails to properly categorize entity names based on context, and it will be necessary to build a more precise morphological analyzer and a rich lexicon to compensate for the incorrect tagging.

  • Named Entity Recognition and Classification (NERC) is a task for recognition and classification of named entities such as a person's name, location, and organization. There have been various studies carried out on Korean NERC, but they have some problems, for example lacking some features as compared with English NERC. In this paper, we propose a method that uses word embedding as features for Korean NERC. We generate a word vector using a Continuous-Bag-of-Word (CBOW) model from POS-tagged corpus, and a word cluster symbol using a K-means algorithm from a word vector. We use the word vector and word cluster symbol as word embedding features in Conditional Random Fields (CRFs). From the result of the experiment, performance improved 1.17%, 0.61% and 1.19% respectively for TV domain, Sports domain and IT domain over the baseline system. Showing better performance than other NERC systems, we demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.
