Na-β"-Al2O3 has been widely employed as a solid electrolyte for high-temperature sodium (Na) beta-alumina batteries (NBBs) thanks to its superb thermal stability and high ionic conductivity. Recently, a vapor phase conversion (VPC) method has been newly introduced to fabricate thin Na-β"-Al2O3 electrolytes by converting α-Al2O3 into β"-Al2O3 in α-Al2O3/yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) composites under Na+ and O2- dual percolation environments. One of the main challenges that need to be figured out is lowered conductivity due to the large volume fraction of the non-Na+-conducting YSZ. In this study, the effect of lithia addition in the β"-Al2O3 phase on the grain size and ionic conductivity of Na-β"-Al2O3/YSZ solid electrolytes have been investigated in order to enhance the conductivity of the electrolyte. The amount of pre-added lithia (Li2O) precursor as a phase stabilizer was varied at 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 mol% against that of Al2O3. It turns out that ionic conductivity increases even with 1 mol% lithia addition and reaches 67 mS cm-1 at 350 ℃ of its maximum with 3 mol%, which is two times higher than that of the undoped composite.

The performance characteristics of a lead acid battery are investigated with the content of Sodium Perborate Tetrahydrate (SPT, NaBO3·4H2O) in a positive plate active material. SPT, which reacts with water to form hydrogen peroxide, is applied as an additive in the positive plate active material to increase adhesion between the substrate (positive plate) and the active material; this phenomenon is caused by a chemical reaction on the surface of substrate. A positive plate with the increasing content of SPT is prepared to compare its properties. It is confirmed that the oxide layer increases at the interface between the substrate and the active material with increasing content of SPT; this is proven to be an oxide layer through EDS analysis. Battery performance is confirmed: when SPT content is 2.0 wt%, the charging acceptance and high rate discharge properties are improved. In addition, the lifetime performance according to the Standard of Battery Association of Japan (SBA) S0101 test is improved with increasing content of SPT.
A solar water battery is a system that generates power using solar energy. It is a combination of photoelectrochemical cells and an energy storage system. It can simultaneously convert and store solar energy without additional external voltage. Solar water batteries consist of photoelectrodes, storage electrodes and counter electrodes, and their properties and combination are important for the performance and the efficiency of the system. In this study, we tried to find the effect that changing the components of solar water batteries has on its system. The effects of the counter electrode during discharge, the kinds of photoelectrode and storage electrode materials, and electrolytes on the solar energy conversion and storage capacitance were studied. The optimized composition (TiO2 : NaFe-PB : Pt foil) exhibited 72.393 mAh g-1 of discharge capacity after 15 h of photocharging. It indicates that the efficiency of solar energy conversion and storage is largely affected by the configuration of the system. Also, the addition of organic pollutants to the chamber of the photoelectrode improved the battery's photo-current and discharge capacity by efficient photoelectron-hole pair separation with simultaneous degradation of organic pollutants. Solar water batteries are a new eco-friendly solar energy conversion and storage system that does not require additional external voltages. It is also expected to be used for water treatment that utilizes solar energy.

A study on the iron electrode which is a good material for alkaline battery because of its superior characteristics including high theoretical capacity density, low toxicity, low cost and inexhaustible supply was performed to develop high performance nickel-iron secondary battery. The characteristics of chrage-discharge reaction were examined by cyclic voltammetry technique SEM and XRD analysis. The capacity of the test electrodes was determined by the costant current charge-discharge method. It was found that the purity and particle size of iron material were the major determinant factors of electrode capacity. With the addition of $Na_2S$ into the electrolyte the capacity of electrode was increased about 20 % caused by the prevention of passivation and the increase of hydrogen overpotential. The stability and capacity of electrode were increased with the use of Ni-fibrex and foamed Ni collectors and also depended on the sintering temperature. The capacity of electrode was 350 mAh/g(0.2 C) which corresponded to 36% utility.
Leaching of $LiCoO_2$ as a cathodic active materials for recovering Li and Co from spent lithium ion battery was investigated in terms of reaction variables. At the optimum condition determined in the previous work, Li and Co in a $H_2SO_4$ and $HNO_3$ solution were dissolved 70~80% and 40%, respectively. Li and Co were leached over 95% with the addition of a reductant such as $Na_2S_2O_3$ or $H_2O_2$. This behavior is probably due to the reduction of $Co^{3+}$ to $Co^{2+}$. Leaching of $LiCoCo_2$ powder obtained by calcination of an electrode materials from spent batteries was also carried out. Leaching efficiency of Li and Co were over 99% at the optimum condition with $H_2O_2$ addition of 1.7 vol.%. It seems to be due to the activation of $LiCoO_2$ by repeated charging and discharging or an imperfect crystal structure by deintercalation of Li.
Discharge capacity of $LiCoO_2$ in preparation by mechanochemical process decreased remarkably over 4.3V. However, Zr coating of $LiCoO_2$ showed very stable electrochemical properties up to 4.5V. Zr coating of $LiCoO_2$ in this experiment showed the discharge capacity of 197 mAh/g at 3.0-4.5V, and it maintained 96% of the initial discharge capacity after 50 cycle of charge/discharge.

In order to recycle waste nickel-cadmium batteries, cadmium was selectively removed by ion substitution reaction so that cadmium and nickel could be separated efficiently. The electrode powder obtained by crushing the electrode in the waste nickelcadmium battery was leached with sulfuric acid. The cadmium in the nickel-cadmium solution was precipitated with cadmium sulfide by the addition of sodium sulfide. Ion substitution experiments were carried out under various conditions. At the optimum condition with pH = -0.1 and $Na_2S/Cd=2.3$ at room temperature, the residual Cd in the solution was about 100 ppm, and most of it was precipitated with CdS.

In this work, a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) was prepared using polyoxyalkylene glycol acrylate (POAGA) as a macromonomer LiCoO$_2$/GPE/graphite cells were prepared and their electrochemical properties were evaluated at various current densities and temperatures. The ionic conductivity of the GPE was more than 6.2${\times}$10$^{-3}$ S$.$$cm^{-1}$ / at room temperature. The GPE had good electrochemical stability up to 4.5 V vs. Li/Li$^{+}$. POAGA-based cells were showed good electrochemical performances such as rate capability, low-temperature performance, and cycleability. The cells, also, passed a safety test such as the overcharge and nail-penetration test.t.
Liquid air energy storage (LAES) using gas liquefaction has attracted considerable attention because of its mature technology, high energy density, few geographical constraints, and long life span. On the other hand, LAES has not yet been commercialized and is being developed recently. Therefore, few studies have performed an economic analysis of LAES. In this study, the levelized cost of electricity was calculated and compared with that of other energy storage systems. As a result, the levelized cost of electricity of LAES was $371/MWh. This is approximately $292/MWh, $159/MWh, $118/MWh, and $3/MWh less than that of the LiCd battery, VRFB battery, Lead-acid battery, and NaS battery. In addition, the cost was approximately $62/MWh and $195/MWh more than that of Fe-Cr flow battery and PHS. Sensitivity analysis of the levelized cost of electricity according to the main economic factors was performed, and economic uncertainty analysis was performed through a Monte-Carlo simulation. The cumulative probability curve showed the levelized cost of electricity of LAES, reflecting price fluctuations in the air compressor cost, electricity cost, and standing reserve hourly fee.

We optimized the compositions of electrolyte and additives for anode in Ni-MH battery to improve the electrode characteristics at ambient and low temperatures using response surface method(RSM). Among various additives for anode, PTFE exhibited the greatest influence on the discharge capacity of the anode. Through response optimization process, we found the optimum composition of the additives to exhibit the greatest discharge capacity. When the amount of additives was too small, the anode was degraded with time due to the low binding strength among alloy powders and the resultant separation of powders from the current collector. In contrast, the addition of large amount of the additives increased in the resistance of the electrode. In addition, the discharge capacity of the anode at $-18^{\circ}C$ increased with decreasing the concentration of KOH, NaOH and LiOH in design range of electrolyte. The resistance and viscosity of electrolyte appear to affect the discharge capacity of the anode at low temperature.
