  • Response surface methodology (RSM) based on a Box-Behnken Design (BBD) was applied to optimize the thermal-alkaline pre-treatment operating conditions for anaerobic digestion of flotation scum in food waste leachate. Three independent variables such as thermal temperature, NaOH concentration and reaction time were evaluated. The maximum methane production of 369.2 mL $CH_4/g$ VS was estimated under the optimum conditions at $62.0^{\circ}C$, 10.1% NaOH and 35.4 min reaction time. A confirmation test of the predicted optimum conditions verified the validity of the BBD with RSM. The analysis of variance indicated that methane production was more sensitive to both NaOH concentration and thermal temperature than reaction time. Thermal-alkaline pretreatment enhanced the improvement of 40% in methane production compared to the control experiment due to the effective hydrolysis and/or solubilization of organic matters. The fractions with molecular weight cut-off of scum in food waste leachate were conducted before and after pre-treatment to estimate the behaviors of organic matters. The experiment results found that thermal-alkaline pre-treatment could reduce the organic matters more than 10kD with increase the organic matters less than 1kD.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of ozone treatment on removal of brown color and ammonia-like odor produced from shark cartilage (SC) and to establish the optimal extraction conditions of chondroitin sulfate (CS) by NaOH and hot water. Treatment of SC with 0.3 ppm ozone water resulted in higher color $L^*$ value but lower $a^*$ and $b^*$ values compared with those of non-treated SC, without affecting its proximate compositions (moisture, protein, lipid, carbohydrate, and ash). Ozone treatment also increased the overall acceptability of SC by reducing ammonia-like odor. The optimum concentration and time for extraction of CS from SC using NaOH at $100^{\circ}C$ were 1 N and 120 min, respectively, with 10.02% of extraction yield. The total yield (10.01%) of CS obtained by 7 times repeated extraction with hot water at $100^{\circ}C$ was comparable to that of the 1 N NaOH extraction for 120 min at $100^{\circ}C$.

  • This experiment was conducted to study the effect of addition of Lucerne juice (LJ) obtained by mechanical extraction of freshly harvested crop on the nutritive value of rice straw silage. Rice straw (RS) was ensiled with intact, NaOH or $NH_3$ treated LJ at 3:7 ratio on fresh weight basis (LJ RS, LJ NaOH RS and LJ $NH_3$ RS, respectively). Each alkali was mixed with fresh juice at a level of 4% of rice straw dry matter just before ensiling. Rice straw ensiled with water was prepared as the control (W RS). In the digestion trial, goats were allocated in a $4{\times}4$ Latin-square design and fed the diet containing three parts of RS silage and one part of wheat bran (DM basis). For the goats receiving the control silage, urea was supplemented at feeding time so as to adjust the nitrogen intake except for goats on LJ $NH_3$ RS silage. Crude protein content of RS silage was increased from 5.2 to 9.1% (DM basis) by the addition of intact LJ and to about 24% by $NH_3$ treated LJ. The control W RS silage contained only trace amount of lactic acid and was dominated by acetic and butyric acid. The addition of intact LJ reduced butyric acid content and $NH_3-N/TN$ of the silage whereas the addition of alkalized LJ increased those values and shifted to a butyrate type fermentation. Nutrient digestibilities and nitrogen balance of goats were almost the same when they were fed W RS and LJ RS silage indicating the addition of intact LJ did not improve the nutritive value. The addition of alkalized LJ significantly increased the fiber digestibilities of RS silage and $NH_3$ treatment was more effective than NaOH treatment. Postprandial ruminal $NH_3-N$ and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentrations were decreased by feeding LJ NaOH RS silage suggesting ruminal protein synthesis was enhanced along with the increase of energy supply for supply for rumen microbes by the alkali treatment. The advantageous fiber digestibilities of LJ $NH_3$ RS silage compared with those of LJ NaOH RS silage might be attributable to a sufficient nitrogen supply for microbial fiber digestion in the rumen.

  • The applicability of the waste pulp which produced in the paper recycling process as an adsorbent for the treatment of $Ni^{2+}$ ion in wastewater has been investigated taking the initial concentration of adsorbate, temperature, the amount of adsorbent, and solution pH as the experimental variables. In addition, the effect of the concentration of coexisting solute and pre-treatment of adsorbent on the adsorbability of $Ni^{2+}$ ion were also examined. The electrokinetic potential of waste pulp was observed to be positive below pH 7.8 and negative above this pH. The adsorption reaction of $Ni^{2+}$ ion reached its equilibrium within 4 hours after the reaction was initiated and the adsorbed amount of adsorbate was found to increase with its initial concentration. The adsorbability of $Ni^{2+}$ was raised with temperature so that its adsorption reaction was considered to be exothermic, which was substantiated by thermodynamic calculation. Also, the adsorbed amount of $Ni^{2+}$ was raised with the amount of waste pulp and with pH in the range of pH $3{\sim}6$. This behavior of the adsorption of $Ni^{2+}$ according to the solution pH was well agreed with the electrokinetic characteristics of waste pulp in solution. The amount of coexisting solute was observed to reversely affect on the $Ni^{2+}$ adsorption onto waste pulp under the experimental conditions. With regard to the pre-treatment of adsorbent with NaOH, the adsorbability of $Ni^{2+}$ was increased with the concentration of NaOH to a certain extent. However, it was found to decrease contrarily when the concentration of NaOH became too high.

  • The effect of sodium hydroxide treatment on some physicochemical properties of zeolite mordenite mineral was studied with chemical analyses, powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analyses, infrared analysis, measurement of carbon dioxide adsorption and gas chromatography. Mordenite mineral from tuffaceous rocks in Yeongil and Wolsung area was used as a starting material and treated with 0.1-5N NaOH aqueous solution at about $95^{\circ}C$ in the water bath for three hours. At the concentration of sodium hydroxide below 0.5N, all chemical compositions in the tuff were virtually insoluble and the mordenite structure did not change. At the concentration above 1N, the chemical compositions such as silica, alumina, etc., were dissolved. The dissolution ratio of silica was lager than that of alumina, and the ratio of silica to alumina in the tuff decreased sharply in the concentration range of 2 to 3N. Intensity of X-ray diffraction peak of mordenite (202) plane and the adsorbed amount of carbon dioxide also decreased with the increasing concentration of sodium hydroxide above 1N. These decreases corresponded to the degree of mordenite structure collapsed. The separation of gas chromatography of nitrogen, oxygen and carbon monoxide was not affected by the sodium hydroxide treatment, but elution peaks of methane and krypton tended to be broadened and their retention time was shortened. The elution peaks of both methane and krypton tended to be overlapped with those of nitrogen and oxygen.

  • This study was conducted to examine of rice straw after chemical treatments and ensiling on its feeding value, in situ studies using a rumen fistulated Korean cow and nylon bag technique. NaOH treatment greatly improved the degradation the Dry matter and Neutral detergent fiber degradation in the rumen but the intake was not affected. Ammonia treatment did not improve the degradation rate of rice straw in the rumen, but remarkably increased the rice straw digestibility and intake by sheep. Making silage of rice straw did not affect its rumen degradation rate, but the digestibility and its take by sheep were greatly improved especially when a little molasses together with Lactobacillus were supplemented. Degradation rate of rice straw in the rumen measured by nylon bag technique was influenced by various treatments but did not appear to coincide with digestibility by sheep. This would be due to the fact that feed intake affect digestibility as well as the degradation in rumen. Therefore, it can be said that making silage with some molasses and Lactobacillus is one of the easest way of using rice straw for animal feed. (Key words : NaOH, Digestibility, Silage, Molasses )

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the change of the chemical properties of wool treated with six kinds of alkali (NaOH, Naac03, NH40H, NH2CH3CH30H, TMAH and BTMAH) with or without CTAB. Content of bound fatty acid liberated from wool surface, elemental composition and allw6rden time were measured to compare the surface modification of untreated and alkali treated wool. Also, the chemical degradation of the fiber was investigated by measuring cystine contents and urea-hydrogensulfite solubility. The result were as follows: 1. By the alkali treatment of wool, the covalently bound fatty acid of the epicuticle was removed and the allworden time was shortened, and in the case of wool treated with TMAH, BTMAH, the allw6rden sacs were formed unevenly and rarely. Also, cystine contents and urea-hydrogensulfite solubility were decreased by alkali treatment on wool. 2. The modification of epicuticle and the chemical degradation of wool were occurred due to alkaline hydrolysis in the order of TMAH, BTMAH > NaOH, Na3c03> NH2CH3CHaOH, NH40H. 3. As a treating time increased, the modification of epicuticle and chemical degradation of wool were accelerated. By the addition of CTAB to the alkali solution, the modification of epicuticle was increase, and the cystine contents and urea-hydrogensulfite solubility were reduced than that of wool teated with alkli without CTAB due to reduction of negative charge on the wool surface by the adhesion of CTAB.

  • The phase transformation from cellulose I into cellulose II in woods by way of Na-cellulose I was examined by x-ray diffraction analysis. The formation of Na-cellulose I in woods increased with the increase of treating time in alkali solution. When compression wood was treated with 20% NaOH solution at room temperature for 1 day, the x-ray diagram showed only Na-cellulose I. On the other hand, the x-ray diagram of tension wood showed a mixture of cellulose I and Na-cellulose I. Cellulose I of tension wood could not be transformed completely into Na-cellulose I even after 10-day treatment, but was transformed into Na-cellulose I after 30-day treatment. Na-cellulose I of compression and tension woods was converted to the cellulose I pattern and the mixture of cellulose I and cellulose II, respectively, after washing with water and drying at 20℃. Cellulose I regenerated from Na-cellulose I in wood could not be converted to cellulose II by delignification. Thus, it revealed that the delignification of the alkali-treated wood did not affect their cellulose structures. From the results, therefore, it can be concluded that lignin in woods prevents the formation of the stable Na-cellulose I and the conversion from cellulose I to cellulose II. This means that the conversion of chain polarity of wood cellulose hardly occurs during mercerization because cellulose microfibrils are fixed by lignin which not to be intermingled.

  • The possibility of producing Cr$_2$O$_3$powder from waste magnesia-chromium refractory was investigated by sulfuric acid reaction, alkali fusion, water leaching & purification and heat treatment. The effects of temperature, the amount of NaOH added and the flow rate of air on chromium extraction efficiency in an alkali fusion step were investigated. The fusion product was leached with methanol to solve free-NaOH, and then leached with water to produce a Na$_2$CrO$_4$solution. The purity of chrome(Ⅵ) oxides, prepared both from monochromate with an impurity content and monochromate purified with $CO_2$were also examined. The purified monochromate solution was reduced from Cr(Ⅵ) to Cr(III) with NaHSO$_3$solution. The reduced solution was neutralized with NaOH to produce Cr(OH)$_3$. Water washing was treated to eliminate Na$_2$SO$_4$from neutralized Cr(OH)$_3$slurry. The washed Cr(OH)$_3$was dried and thermally treated to produce Cr$_2$O$_3$powder. The properties like lightness and hue of Cr$_2$O$_3$fabricated in this study were L=47.47, a=-14.40 and b=17.21.
