A study was conducted to determine the dietary effects of a clay mineral (sodium bentonite, NaB) on manure gas emission, health, production, and meat characteristics of Hanwoo steers. Two diets fed to steers included a control diet (concentrate mix and rice straw) and a treatment diet (control diet+1.0% clay mineral/concentrate mix). Dietary NaB addition considerably reduced concentrations of gases ($H_2S$, $SO_2$ and $NH_3$) in the manure of Hanwoo steers. Growing steers fed NaB had similar blood profiles with the exception of lower (p<0.05) concentrations of blood alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase. Dietary NaB addition tended to increase (p = 0.10) live weight by 30 kg at slaughtering and did not affect carcass yield and quality traits. Dietary NaB addition increased concentrations of P (p<0.01), Mg (p<0.01), Na (p<0.01), Zn (p<0.005), K (p = 0.08), Fe (p = 0.08) and Cu (p = 0.07) in the longissimus muscle compared to the control but did not affect (p>0.05) fatty acid composition. The study demonstrated that the dietary addition of a clay mineral could be effective in improving mineral bioavailability to Hanwoo steers, which could be one of the reasons for their improved performance.
In this study sodium chloride solution is employed for chemicals, and several cylindrical triaxial tests are performed on the sand-bentonite mixtures saturated with sodium chloride solution. Deformation(elastic modulus, E) and strength(cohesion, c', and angle of friction, f') parameters are obtained from the triaxial tests as functions of confining pressure and sodium chloride solution concentrations. The results here indicate an increase in the value of effective cohesion with increase in the concentration of NaCl solution, which can be explained by using the Gouy-Chapman model. The value of the effective angle of shearing resistance does not show significant change with the increase in concentration of NaCl solution. The Young's modulus also increases with the increase in concentration of NaCl solution.
Sorption characteristics of Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn onto Ca- and Na-bentonites were investigated by the batch experiments in the condition of various pHs and concentrations of groundwater major anions (${So_4}^{2-}$ and ($HCO_3$), which can form a complex with heavy metals. The sorption removal of heavy metals steadily increases as pH increases. The sorption capability about heavy metals of both Ca-bentonite and Na-bentonite is in the order of Pb>Cu>Zn>Cd. The effect of pH and selectivity of heavy metals of bentonites were explained by the change of surface charge of bentonite and the speciation of heavy metals. Na-bentonite has a little higher sorption ability about heavy metals than that of Ca-bentonite. A high sorption removal of Pb in 0.1M sulfate solution may be attributed to the precipitation of $PbSo_4$(anglesite). However, sulfate has a slight effect on the sorption of CU, Cd and Zn. More than 99% of heavy metals were removed from the 0.1 M bicarbonate solution. However, the efficiency of sorption removal of heavy metals highly decreases in the bicarbonate solution of $10^{-2}$M to $10^{-4}$M. The speciation and saturation index calculated by the WATEQ4F program indicate that the sorption of anionic complexes such as ${Pb(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$, ${Cd(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$, ${Zn(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$, ${Cu(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$ and the precipitation of the solid phases such as $PbCO_3$(cerrusite), $ZnCO_3$(smithsonite), $CdCO_3$(obtavite) are involved in sorption removal of heavy metals in bicarbonate solution. The sorption capability about heavy metals of bentonites in the presence of anions shows the following order: Pb>Cu Cd>Zn.
Relnoval of ammonia from aqueous solutions has been studied with zeolite and bentonite minerals. Zeolite and bentonite powder were supplied by a domestic company and used as delivered without further purification. The aqueous pH was found to increase by addition of zeolite or bentonite up to pH 8.5 from initial pH of 5.5∼5.7. From the C.E.C. measurement by ammonium acetate leaching method, the values of C.E.C. of zeolite and bentonite sample were observed to be 129.7 meq/100 gr and 65.1 meq/100 gr, respectively and Na+ ion accounted for the major part of total C.E.C. in both cases. In the removal of ammonia with zeolite and bentonite, physical adsorption of ammonium ion onto minerals was believed to contribute to the removal of it as well as the intrinsic cation exchange reaction. Finally, zeolite was found to be superior to bentonite in the removal of ammonia from aqueous solutions.
The adsorptivity of Methylene Blue on Korean Yeongil bentonite which was premixed with a salt of KF or $NH_{4}Cl$ etc., treated at $200-500^{\circ}C$, washed and dried, was studied. In case of treatment with$NH_{4}Cl$, slight improvement of the adsorptivity of methylene blue on the products was observed. With KF, treated at$200-300^{\circ}C$, the best results was obtained. The adsorption capacity of the products was improved about 1.7 times than that of original bentonite. With $FeSO_4$ or $Na_{2}CO_3$ etc. improvement of the adsorption capacity on the products was not observed.

Extensive studies have been conducted on thermal conductivity of bentonite buffer materials, as it affects the safety performance of barriers engineered to contain high-level radioactive waste. Bentonite is composed of several minerals, and studies have shown that the difference in the thermal conductivity of bentonites is due to the variation in their mineral composition. However, the specific reasons contributing to the difference, especially with regard to the thermal conductivity of bentonites with similar mineral composition, have not been elucidated. Therefore, in this study, bentonites with significantly different thermal conductivities, but of similar mineral compositions, are investigated. Most bentonites contain more than 60% of montmorillonite. Therefore, it is believed that the exchangeable cations of montmorillonite could affect the thermal conductivity of bentonites. The effect of bentonite type was comparatively analyzed and was verified through the effective medium model for thermal conductivity. Our results show that Ca-type bentonites have a higher thermal conductivity than Na-type bentonites.

The bentonite, a buffer material, is essential for the deep geological disposal of HLW (high-level radioactive waste), and it is important to know its characteristic long-term evolution in the underground environment. With an assumption that the concentration of aqueous copper ions will increase if copper-coated materials on a metal canister are corroded, we examined some characteristic ion-exchanges and cation release phenomena occurring in the bentonite clay (montmorillonite) interacted with aqueous Cu cations. During the interaction between dissolved copper and bentonite, Na rather than Ca cations in the expandable clay were preferentially replaced by Cu ions in the experiment. In addition, the Cu-exchanged montmorillonite was characterized by an asymmetric X-ray diffracted pattern with relatively collapsed interlayers compared to the raw sample. These results indicate that the gradual change of the original bentonite property may occur in a underground disposal condition. We are going to further study the characteristic chemical and mineralogical changes of the bentonite buffer to be used for the disposal site by conducting additional experiments.
The adsorption behaviour of Se(-II) onto granite and MX-80 bentonite in Ca-Na-Cl solutions has been studied utilizing adsorption experiments and surface complexation modelling. Adsorption kinetic experiments allude to steady-state adsorption periods after 7 days for granite and 14 days for MX-80 bentonite. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to determine the influence that the physicochemical solution properties would have on Se(-II) adsorption behaviour. Adsorption of Se(-II) onto granite and MX-80 bentonite follows the trend of anionic adsorption, with a decrease in Rd values as the solution pH increased. There is also an ionic strength influence on the adsorption of Se(-II) onto granite with a decrease in the Rd value as the ionic strength increased. This effect is not found when observing Se(-II) adsorption onto MX-80 bentonite. Final experiments with a representative groundwater, determined that the adsorption of Se(-II) onto granite and MX-80 bentonite returned Rd values of (1.80 ± 0.10) m3·kg-1 and (0.47 ± 0.38) m3·kg-1, respectively. In support of the experiments, a surface complexation modelling approach has been employed to simulate the adsorption of Se(-II) onto granite and MX-80 bentonite, where it was determined that two different surface complexes, ≡S_Se- and ≡SOH2+_H2 were capable of simulating Se(-II) adsorption behaviour.

In the compacted bentonite containing $Ag_2O$, the transport of iodide ion was investigated by Through-diffusion method. It is confirmed that Iodide ion is transported by diffusion process in the compacted bentonite containing $Ag_2O$ as well as in the compacted bentonite without $Ag_2O$. However, the lag-time of iodide ion in the compacted bentonite containing $Ag_2O$ is larger than that in the compacted bentonite without $Ag_2O$. The increase of the lag-time was observed in pure iodide ion solution and also in 0.1M NaCl-iodide ion solution. The apparent diffusion coefficient of iodide ion in the compacted bentonite containing $Ag_2O$ has lower value than that in the compacted bentonite without $Ag_2O$. The effect of $Ag_2O$ on the effective diffusion coefficient was not clearly investigated in the compacted bentonite containing $Ag_2O$ while the values of effective diffusion coefficient of iodide ion in the compacted bentonite without $Ag_2O$ obtained in this study were similar to those in the compacted bentonite reported in the literature.

Effects of pH, bentonite and Portland cement on the leaching of the simulated waste glass were investigated. The simulated waste glass showed the low leach rate in the neutral pH region, while the leach rate in both acidic and alkaline regions increased. Addition of bentonite to the leachant enhanced the leaching of the waste glass. When the waste glass was leached at 72$^{\circ}C$ for 36 days in the ground water with gel state Na-bentonite, approximately 2.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of the surface was corroded out and the large amount of Ti, Nd, and Zr was observed on the surface. The amount of B leached from the simulated waste glass in the presence of domestic bentonite was about three times higher than that in the presence of Aldrich bentonite as well as Portland cement.
