  • In this paper the auther investigated the chemical properties, process of humification and type of humic acid in soils which were reclaimed by farming for cultivation in Kangwondo. The results obtained in this studies were summarized as follows: 1. General chemical components of these soil were similar to the ordinary soil but C.E.C. and humus contents were found much more 2. Humic acid and fulvic acid which were extracted with NaOH from soil were greater than those of Na-pyrophosphate(Na-p.) and NaF. Hmus contents and PQ% were increased much more in the upper layer than in the lower layer. 3. Degree of humification of humic acid extracted with NaOH. was very similar to those extracted with Na-pyrophosphate. Humification degree of humic acid extracted with NaF was lower than humic acid which were extracted with NaOH and Na-pyrophosphate. But humification degree of humic acid extracted with NaOH was similar to that with Na-pyrophosphate. Humic acid in B soil and the upper layer was higher than A, C soil and the lower layer of soil, in humification degree. 4. Humic acids extracted with NaOH and Na-pyrophosphate from soil were fractionated by Mg into two parts ${\alpha}$ type and ${\beta}$ type humic acid. Humic acids of ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ type extracted with NaOH were higher than these of Na-pyrophosphate in humification degree. In this soil the humification degree of humic acid was not changed during the period of cultivation. 5. ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$ type humic acid extracted with NaOH were very similar to the humic acid extracted with Na-pyrophosphate in shapes of absorption curves.

  • Stability of sodium borohydride solution during storage was studied. In order to enhance the $NaBH_4$ stability, NaOH and KOH were added to the $NaBH_4$ solution. The effect of concentration of the borohydride and alkaline solution, temperature and materials of storage vessels on the rate of borohydride hydrolysis was investigated. The rate of hydrogen evolution decreased as the concentration of alkaline increased due to increase of $NaBH_4$ stability in the solution. The stability of $NaBH_4$ solution decreased when the borohydride concentration raised from 10 to 15 wt% and then increased when the $NaBH_4$ concentration increased above 15 wt% due to increase in the pH of the concentrated solution. The activity coefficient of hydrolysis of $NaBH_4$ solution(NaOH 3.0 wt%, $NaBH_4$ 25 wt%) was 115.1 kJ/mol and this value was 1.5~4.0 times higher than that of hydrolysis of $NaBH_4$ solution with catalyst. The borohydride solutions in glass and stainless-steel vessel were more stable than the solution in plastic(PE) vessel.

  • In order to see if NaCl affected the the emergence rate and the SD action when treated it at the pupal stage of Drosophila melanogaster, an experiment was performed in which the resistibility to NaCl at the pupal stage was examined by the emergence rate and the effects of NaCl on the SD action was studied by k values. The four SD strains and two other strains (cn bw and Oregon-R) were used and NaCl media were prepared by adding NaCl at a concentration of 0.0M, 0.1M, 0.3M, 0.5M, 0.7M, and 1.0M to the standard media for the present experiment. The following conclusions were established: 1. The emergence rate (resistibility to NaCl) when treated NaCl at the pupal stage is significantly different not only among the strains but also among concentrations of NaCl. 2. The emergence rate decreases as concentration of NaCl increases but the rate of decrease shows rather constant so that the curves of decrease are not steep. 3. The emergence rate of the cn bw and Oregon-R strains shows higher value than of the four SD strains, implying that the resistibility to the NaCl is lower in the SD strains than in the two strains; not a few flies are emerged from the media of 1.0M of NaCl. 4. The difference in k values is not significant among concentrations of NaCl but among strains, the k values of the original SD strains are rather higher and constant but those of the recombinant SD strains are rather low and unstable. 5. The SD action is not affected by NaCl as far as once emerged from the culture media whether containing NaCl or not in any developmental stage. Thus such an experiment on NaCl effect is of little value to analyze the mechanism of the SD action in D. melanogaster.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effece of NaCl concentrations on the growth, photosynthetic rate and mineral uptake of tomato, red pepper, and egg Plant in Pot culture. The growth such as plant height, plant fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight and dried matter rate was decreased as NaCl concentrations were increased. Specially, the growth inhibition of tomato and egg plant was shown at over 40 mM NaCl, and that of red pepper at 20 mM NaCl. Yield of tomato and egg Plant was reduced at over 20 U NaCl, that of red pepper at over 10 mM NaCl. Yield reduction was affected by the number of fruit at low concentration and by mean weight and number of fruit at high concentration. Photosynthetic rate, water potential and stomatal conductance were decreased as NaCl concentrations were increased. The higher the concentration of NaCl, the lower the mineral uptake such as T-N, P, K, Ca and Mg, however, the higher the content of Na and Cl.

  • A Na-cellulose adsorbent was prepared by treating Sigma S-5504 cellulose with 2M NaOH and examined the adsorption behavior between metal ions and Na-cellulose in aqueous solution with batch method. Considering ion exchange capacity of Na-cellulose, the adsorption ratio of the Na-cellulose to metals charge equivalent indicated that the adsorption result from ion exchanging between metal ions and Na-cellulose. The enthalpy for the metal adsorption on the Na-cellulose was calculated to -18kcal/mol, which value was compared to those of carboxymethylcellulose(CMC) and Dowex 50W-X8, these result suggested that the adsorption on Na-cellulose resulted from ion exchange adsorption.

  • In this study, PEBAX[poly(ether-block-amide)]-NaY zeolite composite membranes were prepared, and those prepared membranes were studied on permeability of $C_3H_6$ and $C_3H_8$, and selectivity ($C_3H_6/C_3H_8$). NaY zeolite particles in PEBAX-NaY zeolite composite membranes was dispersed as aggregated particles with the size $0.5{\sim}2.5{\mu}m$ by SEM observation. TGA measurement showed the weight loss change resulted from the amount of NaY zeolite when NaY zeolite was added into PEBAX. By gas permeation experiment, the permeabilities of $C_3H_6$ and $C_3H_8$ were decreased by the more addition NaY zeolite in PEBAX. Overall, $C_3H_6$ was having higher permeability than $C_3H_8$. The selectivity $C_3H_6/C_3H_8$ was decreased by the more NaY zeolite in PEBAX.

  • Protoplast and callus of three rice varieties, CI5309 (salt-tolerant), Dongjinbyeo (moderately tolerant), Nakdongbyeo (salt-sensitive), were cultured on the MS medium containing 0, 0.3, 0.6, and 0.9% of NaCl. The survival rates of protoplasts were decreased according to the hours after NaCl treatment, and the survival rates of protoplast differed among three varieties at 9∼l2 hours after treatment. The contents of proline of CI5309 and Dongjinbyeo were almost the same at the different levels of NaCl, and that of Nakdongbyeo, however, was greatly decreased at the high concentration of NaCl. The contents of Ca, K and Mg were decreased according to the increasing of NaCl concentrations, but the contents of those did not differ among three varieties at the high concentration of NaCl. The contents of Na in each varieties were almost the same at the three levels of NaCl.

  • The salt stress at seedling stage of winter barley was examined in different concentrations of NaCl containing 1/2 Hoagland solution. Fresh weight of seedling at 30 days after seeding was highest at 25mM of NaCl concentration containing 1/2 Hoagland solution but if the NaCl concentration was more than 50mM it began to decrease seriously. Water content in plant was decreased according to increase of NaCl concentration in 1/2 Hoagland solution, so physiological mechanism of NaCl in barley was different from saline plant. Stoma number per cm$^2$ of first leaf was higher than that of control in case of stressed by NaCl but in that case the leaf length was decreased so the number of stoma per first leaf was slightly decreased. Chloroplast shape was not changed by 75mM of high NaCl contained 1/2 Hoagland solution but cell division at root growing point was inhibited by 75mM of NaCl. As the result of salt stress mitochondria was ruined in structure and irregular solid was found to be transfered from the cytoplasm to the cell wall in root growing point.

  • This study was performed to determine the effect of dietary Na levels on plasma amino acid levels. Plasma amino acid levels were compared in 20 adult healthy women subjects who were given high Na diet (290.48 mEq/day : NaCl 17g) or low Na diet (51.26 mEq/day : NaCl 3g) for subsequent 6 days. Plasma essential amino acids levels were significantly decreased (36%) while plasma non-essential amino acids levels were significantly increased (22%) when subjects were given low Na diet (p<0.001). Among essential amino acids, threonine was decreased (74%) significantly when subjects were given low Na diet (p<0.01). Among nonessential amino acids, serine (49%), proline (20%) and aspartic acid (14%) were increased (p<0.01), while arginine (48%) and glutamic acid (27%) were decreased (p<0.001). In conclusion, dietary Na contents seemed to be an important factor to affect plasma amino acid levels. It would be appropriate to decrease the dietary Na intakes level considering the various clinical effects of dietary Na on the body fluid. For the patients who need low Na diet, it would be suggested that the level of dietary proteins should be carefully considered along with dietary Na manipulation. • A study was conducted to estimate Na intake in 30 young and 62 middle-aged female Koreans. For each subject, nondiscretionary Na intake was estimated from 2-day dietary records optimum gustation of salt was tested using beef broth with different salt concentra-tions. and 24-hour urinary Na excretion was measeured from pooled 2-day urine samples. Total daily Na intake was calculated from 24-hour urinary excretion and discretionary Na intake was calculated as difference between total and nondiscretionary Na intake was calculated as difference between total and nondiscretionary Na intake. Mean daily 24-hour urinary Na excretion of the young and middle-aged women was 184.6mEq and 224.6mEq. Mean values of optimum gustation of salt in young and middle-aged subjects were 0.431% and 0.489% The differences between the two groups were significant. Nodiscre-tionary Na intakes of the two groups were not significantly different, . Calculated total and discretionary Na intake of middle-aged women(245.1mEq) were significantly higher than young women(220.3mEq and 211.0mEq) were significantly higher than young women(210, 3mEq and 169, 7mEq) Percent of discretionary to total Na intake was 85.7% in middle-aged and 79.4% in young women. Age BMI urinary Na and K excretions optimum gustation of salt were signficantly correlated with blood pressure of the subjects. Results of the present study confirms the high level of sodium intake especia-lly of discretionary Na intake among Korean women.
