The demand for truck bus radial (TBR) tires with enhanced fuel efficiency and wear resistance have grown in recent years. In addition, as the issue of particulate matter and air pollution increases, efforts are being made to reduce the generation of particulate matter. In this study, we investigated the effect of varying the content of butadiene rubber (BR) on the properties of the rubber compounds and the amount of particulate matter in the TBR tire tread compound. Furthermore, we utilized carbon black in the NR/BR blend compounds owing to its excellent compatibility, and we used silica in the ENR-25/BR blend compounds because it can interact chemically with epoxide groups. The NR/BR blend compounds and the ENR-25/BR blend compounds were evaluated by varying their BR content between 20 phr and 30 phr. The results showed that the ENR-25/BR blend compounds had superior wear resistance than the NR/BR blend compounds. This was caused by the interaction between silica and ENR. In addition, it was confirmed that the increased wear resistance as the BR content increased. Furthermore, compared to the NR/BR blend compounds, ENR-25/BR blend compounds exhibited a lower tan 𝛿 value at 60℃ because silica was used as filler. This indicates a higher fuel efficiency. The measurement results for wear particulate matter showed that as increasing the BR content resulted in generation of less wear particulate matter. This was caused by the increased wear resistance. Moreover, the ENR-25/BR blend compounds with excellent filler-rubber interaction exhibited lower quantities of generated wear particulate matters as compared to the NR/BR blend compounds.

New compounds were made using various NR/BR blend ratio and oil content to improve mechanical properties of rubber isolator at low temperature. Mechanical properties were investigated as a function of NR/BR blend ratio and oil content. Hardness and tensile modulus generally increased, but tensile strength and elongation at break decreased with increasing BR content. Hardness, tensile modulus and tensile strength decreased, but elongation at break were nearly the same with increasing oil content. The glass transition temperature of NR and BR were found to be $-50^{\circ}C$ and $-90^{\circ}C$ respectively based on the abrupt drops in storage elastic modulus and peak of loss factor. Two distinct transition temperature were observed in NR/BR blend compounds and each transition point was not affected by blend level indicating incompatible nature of NR/BR blend.
The abrasion behaviors of NR/BR blend vulcanizates were investigated using NR/BR = 100/0, 80/20, and 60/40 compounds. The abrasion test was performed using a laboratory abrasion tester (LAT) at slip angles of 1° and 7°. The size distributions of the wear particles and the abrasion rates were examined according to the rubber compositions and slip angles. The most abundant wear particles at the slip angle of 1° were sizes above 1,000 ㎛, irrespective of the rubber composition. The most abundant wear particles at 7° slip angle had sizes in the range of 212-500 ㎛, except for the NR = 100 sample. The wear particle size distribution shifted to a smaller size as the slip angle and BR content increased. The abrasion rate at 7° was much larger than that at 1° slip angle. Furthermore, the abrasion rate was notably increased by adding BR to NR.

The cure, viscoelastic and mechanical characteristics of organoclay filled NR/BR blends were studied and compared with the properties of carbon black and silica filled NR/BR blends. The nanocomposites with extensive exfoliation state can be fabricated by a solution mixing method. In the composites, the amount of filler content was fixed to 10 phr. Degree of intercalation and exfoliation was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD results indicated exfoliation of the silicate layers into the rubber matrix. While the degree or intercalation and exfoliation is lowered by the conventional mixing method, extensive exfoliation can be obtained by the solution mixing method. It was found that the clay filled NR/BR compound showed better viscoelastic (tan ${\delta}$) and mechanical properties than the carbon black or silica filled NR/BR compounds.
Effects of the ratio of rubber composition on covulcanization and ozone resistance were studied in this study. Specimens used in this study were rubber compounds(specimen-A) blended with various ratio of NR, SBR, BR, IIR, and EPDM, unsaturated rubber compounds(specimen-B) with NR/BR/SBR, and saturated rubber compounds(specimen-C) with NR/IIR/EPDM. PAD adhesion specimen was prepared from vulcanizing specimen-A and B, and specimen-A and C, respectively. Using same adhesion specimen, peel strength was measured and tested ozone resistance. In specimen-A, peel strength was higher with increasing NR ratio for NR and BR contained blends. In other specimen-A containing NR and SBR, the peel strength was also increased with increasing SBR ratio. NR/BR/IIR/EPDM rubber compounds had also better adhesion property than NR/SBR/IIR/EPDM compounds. As more unsaturated rubber was blended, the peel strength was higher but ozone resistance was worse. Optimum ratio of unsaturated and saturated rubbers for the peel strength and ozone resistance was 60/40.
Wear particles of the model tread compounds for bus and truck tires were made using a laboratory abrasion tester and characterized based on their size distributions, shapes, and crosslink densities. The influence of the carbon black contents and rubber compositions (NR= 100 and NR/BR= 80/20) on the production of wear particles was investigated. The wear particles were separated according to size using a sieve shaker. The shape properties of the wear particles were analyzed using an image analyzer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Their shapes were observed as tiny stick cookies or sausages with bumpy surfaces. The particle size distribution tended to be smaller with increasing carbon black content. Moreover, the particle size distributions of the NR = 100 samples were larger than that of the NR/BR blend samples. There were different filaments in the wear particles. The filament diameters tended to be thinner with increasing carbon black content. The crosslink density increased with increasing carbon black content, and the crosslink densities of the NR= 100 samples were lower than those of the NR/BR blend ones. The particle size distribution tended to be smaller with increasing crosslink density. Based on the experimental results, the wear particles can be produced by detaching debris from the main body through repetitive strain and recovery.
A coil pyrolyzer and processor-controlled gas chromatograph were used for analysis of rubber for compounding ratio of the single and blend rubber vlucanizates. Variables such as sample size, pyrolysis temperature, time allowed for pyrolysis, the column packing material, its length and programmable temperature for gas chromatography were examined to obtain optimum condition for application to NR, BR and SBR blends. By application fixed conditions, three kinds of standard curves were finally obtained from thirty samples of blend vulcanizates which were prepared in the pilot plant, NIRI. It is possible to determine rubber composition and their ratio in NR, BR and SBR products by pyrolysis.
In this study, microstructure and gel content (C-C) of polybutadiene rubber (PBR) were investigated using various techniques including ASTM D 3616, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (ATR FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). The ATR FTIR spectra of the samples were investigated to determine the cis, trans, 1, 2-vinyl and the C-C gel content in PBR. The absorbance ratios of specific peaks in different grades of PBR were correlated with the C-C gel content measured by the ATR FTIR techniques. Physico-mechanical and rheological properties of rubber compounds based on BR with various amounts of gel were determined. The results showed that there is an acceptable correlation between these properties and the C-C gel content of PBR.
Abrasion tests of model tire tread compounds (NR and NR/BR blend compounds) were performed at different slip angles (1° and 7°) using a laboratory abrasion tester. The abrasion behavior was investigated by analyzing the worn surface and wear particles. The abrasion spacing formed on the specimen worn at the large slip angle of 7° was significantly narrower than that at the small slip angle of 1°, while the abrasion depth for the specimen worn at 7° was lower than that at 1°. The abrasion spacing and depth tended to be narrower and lower, respectively, as the BR content increased. The abrasion patterns were clearly visible on the outside of the specimen for the slip angle of 1° but not for 7°. The wear particles had a rough surface and there were numerous micro-bumps. It was found that the crosslink density affected the abrasion patterns and morphologies of the wear particles.

The physico-mechanical properties of NR/BR blend were measured, and the results were interpreted in terms of the crosslink density with cure system. The cure rate, maximum torque and crosslink density increase with the content and ratio of curative for cure system. Hardness, 300 % tensile modulus, rebound and wear resistance increase with crosslink density of the vulcanizate but heat build-up and tan $\delta$ at $60^{\circ}C$ decrease. It is expected that semi-EV(efficient vulcanization) cure system is appropriate for application in tire tread of truck/bus in which load bearing property is impotant.
