  • In this study, the effect of cosurfactant on the phase equilibrium and dynamic behavior was studied in systems containing NP7 nonionic surfactant solutions and nonpolar hydrocarbon oils. All cosurfactants used during this study such as n-pentanol, n-octanol and n-decanol acted as a hydrophobic additive and thus promoted the transition from an oil in water (O/W) microemulsion (${\mu}E$) in equilibrium with an excess oil phase to a three-phase region containing excess water, excess oil, and a middle-phase microemulsion and further to a water in oil (W/O) ${\mu}E$ in equilibrium with the excess water phase. The transition temperature was found to decrease with both increases in the chain length and amount of addition of a cosurfactant. Dynamic behavior studies under O/W ${\mu}E$ conditions showed that an oil drop size decreased with time due to the solubilization into micelles. On the other hand, both the spontaneous emulsification of water into the oil phase and the expansion of oil drop were observed under W/O ${\mu}E$ conditions because of the diffusion of surfactant and water into the oil phase. Under conditions of a three-phase region including a middle-phase ${\mu}E$, both the rapid solubilization and emulsification of the oil into aqueous solutions were found mainly due to the existence of ultra-low interfacial tension. Dynamic interfacial tension measurements have been found to be in a good agreement with dynamic behavior results.

  • In these studies, semibatch emulsion copolymerization of n-butyl acrylate (n-BA) as adhesive component and methyl metacrylate (MMA) as coagulant component was carried out in order to investigate the role of surfactant in aqueous phase for polymer cement. It was found that the particle size and concentration of final polymer are affected by surfactant type used. The effect of nonionic surfactants was shown in the decrease of polymer emulsion concentration and small emulsion particle in order of LE-50, NP-50 > CE-50, Tween 20 > TX-405 > Brij 35. In LE and NP (n=7-50) as nonionic surfactant, it could be obtained the stable polymer emulsion of 40% in aqueous phase with average particle size of 250-320 nm using over n=30. On the other hand, the effect of surfactant type in initial reactor charge was shown that when SDS as ionic surfactant was used, the polymer emulsion concentration was constant irrespective of the amount used, whereas CTAB as cationic surfactant and HN-100 as reactive surfactant were shown a tendency to the decrease of that. The effect surfactant type on final polymer particle size was shown in decrease by the order of SDS > CTAB > HN-100.

  • Nonyphenol (NP) used actively as non-ionic surfactant is classified as one of most potent endocrine disrupting chemicals. Effects of NP on mixed function oxygenase (MFO) system in rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) were investigated for seven days after intraperitoneal injection (10 and 25 mg $kg^{-1}$). Hepatosomatic index (BSI) of fishes exposed to NP of 25 mg $kg^{-1}$ was significantly reduced compared to those in control group. NP exposure enhanced cytochrome P450 levels in the fish liver, while 7 ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity was inhibited. NP exposure levels in this study were much higher than those found in the coastal environment of Korea. Effects on HSI and liver MFO system, which is involved in steroid hormone metabolism, imply that W may influence on reproduction of fish by not only hormone receptor mediated response but also through effects on the MFO system.

  • Objectives This study aimed to estimate the effects of 4-nonylphenol (NP), a ubiquitously present surfactant in aquatic environments, on the anti-oxidant systems of the liver in the Far Eastern catfish Silurus asotus. Methods Changes in biochemical parameters involved in glutathione (GSH)-related and other anti-oxidant systems were analyzed following 4 weeks of 4-NP administration (0.1 and 1.0 mg/kg diet) via a formulated diet to catfish. Results 4-NP exposure induced an elevation in hepatic lipid peroxide levels and an accompanying decrease in reduced state GSH after 2 weeks, suggesting pro-oxidant effects of the chemical in catfish. This oxidative stress was associated with an inhibition of the GSH-utilizing enzyme glutathione peroxidase at the same time point. This inhibition was restored after 4 weeks. The activities of other anti-oxidant enzymes, i.e., glutathione reductase, superoxide dismutase and catalase were increased after 4 weeks. These enzyme increases occurred more strongly at the higher 4-NP concentration (1.0 mg/kg diet). Conclusions 4-NP given to catfish at 0.1 to 1.0 mg/kg diet, concentrations relevant to environmental levels, depletes the endogenous anti-oxidant molecule GSH and temporarily inhibits GSH-related anti-oxidant enzymes. Such declines in anti-oxidant capacity and elevated oxidative stress seem to be compensated eventually by subsequent activation of various anti-oxidant enzyme systems.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the polymers and surfactants as the potential control agents of sweet potato whitefly Bemisia tabaci, which is causing problems in ornamental garden and greenhouse. Polymers have an insecticidal activity to knock down and to be lethal to small winged insects by its viscosity. Among five polymers tested at 0.2% concentration, polinol P-24 showed the highest insecticidal activity as 59.4% against B. tabaci adult in cylindrical chamber, and followed by polinol P-20 (insecticidal activity, 57.1%). When treated at 0.1 % or 0.3% concentrations, Polinol P-24 also showed the highest insecticidal activity with 43.3% and 54.5%, respectively. Among eight surfactants tested, insecticidal activity was the highest in 0.0005% NP10 treatment (70.0%), and followed by 0.001% NP7 (67.4%). The synergistic effect between polinol P-24 and eight surfactants was evaluated. After bioassays, the 0.2% polinol P-24 plus 0.005% NP10 was selected as a candidate control agent for controlling of B. tabaci adults. Polinol P-24/NP10 was showed the highest control efficacy against B. tabaci adults applied three times at three day-intervals in square rearing cage. In the greenhouse, the mixture treatment showed good control value over 70% seven days after treatment.

  • This study was concerned with the scouring effect of anionic surfactants, PAPE(sodium polyoxyethylene alkyl phosphoric ester) for cotton fibres. Sodium polyoxyethylene(7) nonylphenyl phosphoric ester(CPB-1) and the sodium polyoxyethylene(7) tridecyl phosphoric ester(CPB-2) were synthesized by the phosphoric esterification reaction from NP-7(polyoxyethylene(7) nonylphenyl ether) and TDA-7(polyoxyethylene(7) tridecyl ether) as scouring agents. Defoaming ability, fibre wetting time and absorbency rate of scouring agents were investigated. Being compared with the conventional scouring agent(Ultravon GP; Ciba-guyge Co.), CPB-1 and CPB-2 showed a higher defoaming ability in the cotton scouring process at room temperature. And CPB-1 has a higher wetting effect than the agents, CPB-2 or GP in distilled water bath but CPB-2 showed more scouring effect in 1.2 wt % NaOH solution bath.

  • Nonylphenol (NP) has been well known as a major substance of surfactant and/or estrogenic environmental hormone. We tested toxic effects of nonylphenol on the population growth and development of aquatic organism such as algae (Microcystis aeruginosa), heterotrophic nanoflagellate (Diphylleia rotans), micro- (Brachionus calyciflorus) and macro-zooplankton (Daphnia magna) among eutrophic water food-web constituents. Dosage of NP treatment were 4 to 5 grades, according to each organism's tolerance based on pre-experiments; algae (0.01, 0.05, 0.10, 1.00 mg $L^{-1}$) Diphylleia rotans (0.5, 1,2. 5,6, 10 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1})$, Brachionus calyciflorus (0.1, 0.5, 1, 2.5, 5 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$), and Daphnia magna (0.5, 1, 5, 10, 50 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$), respectively. Toxic effects were measured by the changes of biomass of each organism after NP treatment. All experiments were triplication. As suggested, the higher concentration of NP treatment, the stronger inhibited the population growth of all organisms tested. In view of toxicity, a variety of concentration of NP showed a significant growth inhibition to organism; algae to 0.05 $mg\;L^{-1}$, D. rotans and B. calyciflorus to 1.0 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, and D. magna to 5.0 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, respectively. The $EC_{50}$ of each organism to the nonylphenol are as follows; 3. calyciflorus (2.49 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$), D. rotans (3.49 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$), D. magna (7.61 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1})$, and M. aeruginosa (47 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1})$. NP toxic effects on the development of zooplankton like egg production showed some differences in treatment concentration between Brachionus calyciflorus ${0.1{\sim}1NP{\mu}g\;L^{-1})$ and Daphnia magna $(0.5{\sim}5NP\;{\mu}g\;L^{-1})$. These results suggest that a strong growth inhibition of predator or grazer by the nonylphenol can stimulate the algal growth, or can play important role in evoking the nuisance algal bloom in eutrophic water with enough nutrients.

  • For thermal adaptable fabrics, the polyurethane-urea microcapsules containing phase-change materials (PCMs: hexadecane, octadecane and eicosane) were successfully synthesized by interfacial polycondensation using 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (TDI)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG400)/ethylene diamine (EDA) as shell monomers and nonionic surfactant NP-12 in an emulsion system under stirring rates of $3,000{\sim}13,000$ rpm. The mean particle size of microcapsule decreased significantly with increasing the stirring rate up to 11,000 rpm, and then leveled off. The mean particle size increased with increasing the content and molecular weight (eicosane > octadecane > hexadecane) of PCMs at the same stirring rate. The mean particle sizes of microcapsules were found to decrease with increasing the NP-12 content up to 1.5 wt%, and thereafter increased a little. It was found that the melting temperature ($T_m$) and crystallization temperature ($T_c$) of three kinds of encapsulated PCMs and their enthalpy changes (${\Delta}H_m,{\Delta}H_c$) increased with increasing PCM contents. The encapsulation efficiencies (Ee) of hexadecane microcapsule linearly increased with increasing the content of hexadecane. It was found that the stable microcapsule containing 50 wt% of hexadecane could be obtained in this study. However, Ee of octadecane and eicosane microcapsules increased with increasing PCM's contents up to 40 wt%, and then decreased a little. By considering the encapsulation efficiency, it was found that the maximum/optimum contents of octadecane and eicosane microcapsules were about 40 wt%. By the dynamic thermal performance test, it was found that the maximum buffering levels of Nylon fabrics coated with hexadecane, octadecane, and eicosane microcapsules were about $-2.4/+2.9^{\circ}C,\;-3.6/+3.6^{\circ}C\;and\;-4.0/+4.7^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • In this study, the reaction conditions for lipase-catalyzed resolution of racemic naproxen 2,2,2-trilfluoroethyl thioester were optimized, and the effect of surfactants was investigated. Among the organic solvents tested, the isooctane showed the highest conversion (92.19%) in a hydrolytic reaction of (S)-naproxen 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl thioester. In addition, the isooctane induced the highest initial reaction rate of (S)-naproxen 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl thioester ($V_s=2.34{\times}10^{-2}mM/h$), the highest enantioselectivity (E = 36.12) and the highest specific activity ($V_s/(E_t)=7.80{\times}10^{-4}mmol/h{\cdot}g$) of lipase. Furthermore, reaction conditions such as temperature, concentration of the substrate and enzyme, and agitation speed were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM), and the statistical analysis indicated that the optimal conditions were $48.2^{\circ}C$, 3.51 mM, 30.11 mg/mL and 180 rpm, respectively. When the optimal reaction conditions were used, the conversion of (S)-naproxen 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl thioester was 96.5%, which is similar to the conversion (94.6%) that was predicted by the model. After optimization of reaction conditions, the initial reaction rate, lipase specific activity and conversion of (S)-naproxen 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl thioester increased by approximately 19.54%, 19.12% and 4.05%, respectively. The effect of surfactants such as Triton X-100 and NP-10 was also studied and NP-10 showed the highest conversion (89.43%), final reaction rate of (S)-naproxen 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl thioester ($V_s=1.175{\times}10^{-2}mM/h$) and enantioselectivity (E = 59.24) of lipase.
