엔진 사이클 시뮬레이션에 의한 직분식 디젤기관의 NO 배출물에 미치는 흡기충전 조건의 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on Effect of Intake Charging Conditions upon NO Emissions in a DI Diesel Engine Using Engine Cycle Simulation)

  • In this study, a cycle simulation using a two-zone model is carried out to investigate the effect of intake charging conditions such as oxygen concentration, temperature and pressure on NO emissions in a DI diesel engine. The model is validated against measurements in terms of cylinder pressure, torque, BSFC and NOx emissions with 2902 cc DI diesel engine. Calculated results can be summarized as follows. The oxygen concentration in the intake charge is decreased with increasing of EGR rate and equivalence ratio. As the intake oxygen concentration is reduced, the combustion pressure and the burned gas temperature decrease and, as a result, NO formation decreases. Also, the results show that as the intake pressure increases and the intake temperature decreases, NO emissions are effectively reduced.

  • The use of palm oil and diesel blended with ethanol, known as a microemulsion biofuel, is gaining attention as an attractive renewable fuel for engines that may serve as a replacement for fossil-based fuels. The microemulsion biofuels can be formulated from the mixture of palm oil and diesel as the oil phase; ethanol as the polar phase; methyl oleate as the surfactant; alkanols as the cosurfactants. This study investigates the influence of the three cosurfactants on fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions in a direct-injection (DI) diesel engine. The microemulsion biofuels along with neat diesel fuel, palm oil-diesel blends, and biodiesel-diesel blends were tested in a DI diesel engine at two engine loads without engine modification. The formulated microemulsion biofuels increased fuel consumption and gradually reduced the nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) emissions and exhaust gas temperature; however, there was no significant difference in their carbon monoxide (CO) emissions when compared to those of diesel. Varying the carbon chain length of the cosurfactant demonstrated that the octanol-microemulsion fuel emitted lower CO and $NO_x$ emissions than the butanol- and decanol-microemulsion fuels. Thus, the microemulsion biofuels demonstrated competitive advantages as potential fuels for diesel engines because they reduced exhaust emissions.

북한의 중공업 부문 대기오염물질 배출량 추정 (Estimation of air pollutant emissions from heavy industry sector in North Korea)

  • This study aims to estimate the amount of air pollutants emitted from heavy industry facilities in North Korea. To compare the emission in 2017 from the heavy industry sector in North Korea with South Korea, the heavy industry sector was classified with the South Korean classification (Matching Heavy Industry sector) and air pollutant emissions by Matching Heavy Industry sector in North Korea were estimated. The CO, NOx and SOx emissions of Matching Heavy Industry sector in North Korea are 22%, 73%, and 31% of the emission in South Korea, respectively. The air pollutant emissions in the Matching Heavy Industry sector in North Korea for CO, NOx and SOx were 0.6%, 124%, and 24% of the total air pollutant emission in North Korea estimated from EDGAR, respectively. As for the distribution of emissions by administrative district of the Matching Heavy Industry sector in North Korea, NOx was concentrated in the western part of North Korea, and CO and SOx emissions were concentrated in Hamgyong-bukto.

국내 오존 모의 농도에 대한 해양 배출량의 영향 정량 분석 (A Quantitative Analysis of the Effect of Ocean Emissions on the Simulated Ozone Concentration in South Korea)

  • In this study, we quantitatively analyze the effect of ocean emission sources on the simulated O3 concentrations in South Korea using the community multi-scale air quality (CMAQ) model. To analyze changes in O3 concentrations by ocean emissions, two different CMAQ simulations considering ocean emissions (OE case) and without considering ocean emissions (NE case) were conducted during the Korea-United States air quality (KORUS-AQ) campaign period (May-June 2016). The changes in the simulated O3 concentrations due to the effect of ocean emissions (OE case-NE case) appeared mostly in the ocean areas (+1.201 ppbv). The effect of ocean emissions was positive during the daytime (+1.813 ppbv), but negative during the nighttime (-0.612 ppbv). Analysis using the integrated process rate (IPR) confirmed that the increase or decrease in O3 concentration by ocean emissions was mainly due to chemical processes. Further analysis using the integrated reaction rate (IRR) showed that the daytime increase in O3 concentration was mainly attributable to the increased O3 production via O + O2 + M → O3 + M reaction as photolysis of NO2 increased due to the added ocean emissions. The nighttime decrease in O3 concentration was mainly due to the increased O3 titration by NO (NO + O3 → O2 + NO2) due to the increased NO emission. These results indicate that the changes in the concentration O3 in the sea area by the effect of ocean emissions are mainly due to increased NOx emissions. However, there could be a number of uncertainties in ocean emissions data used in this study, thus continuous comparative research using the most updated data will need to be carried out in the future.

  • Recently, the automobile industry has been faced with very serious problems related to the very restricted regulations of exhaust gas emissions. Therefore many researchers have been attracted to the development of oxygenated fuel for a solution to these problems. This paper deals with the effects of oxygenated fuel on exhaust emissions. An experimental study was conducted to investigate PM and $NO_X$ emission using dimethyl carbonate as an oxygenated fuel in a naturally aspirated DI diesel engine. With increased oxygenated fuel amounts. there were significant reductions in PM, HC and CO emissions mainly from depressed thermal cracking. while little increase in $NO_X$ was encountered concurrently. The effective reduction in PM with oxygenated fuel was maintained with the presence of $CO_2$. which suggested low $NO_X$ and PM obtained from the combination of using oxygenated fuel and cooled EGR. Thermal cracking and an analysis of the heat release rate were also studied in the experiment.

  • The aim of this study is to develop an integrated urea-SCR catalytic filter system for reducing soot and $NO_X$ emissions simultaneously in diesel engines. In this study, the characteristics of exhaust emissions relative to reactive activation temperature under four kinds of engine loads are experimentally investigated by using a four-cycle, four-cylinder, direct injection type, water-cooled turbo intercooler ECU common-rail diesel engine with the integrated urea-SCR $MnO_2-V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2/SiC$ catalytic filter system operating at three kinds of engine speeds. The urea-SCR reactor is used to reduce $NO_X$ emissions, and the catalytic filter system is used to reduce soot emissions. The reactive activation temperature is very important for reacting a reducing agent with exhaust emissions. The reactive activation temperatures in this experiment is applied to 523, 573 and 623 K. The fuel is sprayed by the pilot and main injections at the variable injection timing between BTDC $15^{\circ}$ and ATDC $1^{\circ}$ according to experimental conditions. It is found that the $NO_X$ conversion rate is the highest as 83.9% at the reactive activation temperature of 523 K in all experimental conditions of engine speed and load, and the soot emissions shown by the average reduction rate of approximately 93.3% are almost decreased below 0.6% in all experimental conditions regardless of reactive activation temperatures. Also, the THC and CO emissions by oxidation reaction of Mn, V and Ti are shown in the average reduction rates of 70.3% and 38% regardless of all experimental conditions.

2006~2015년 동안 국내 유해화학물질 배출량 변화에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Variation of Hazardous Pollutant Emissions in Korea from 2006 to 2015)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in hazardous pollutant emissions in Korea over the period of 2006-2015. Methods: A survey of hazardous pollutant emissions was conducted through the homepage for 2006-2015. The emission of hazardous chemicals and the health effect was examined using the Annual Report of Air Quality in Korea (2016) and National Health Statistics (2015) as references. Results: Hazardous pollutant emissions increased by 1.1 times over the past decade, and the circulation amount of chemicals was 15% compared to the previous year. $PM_{10}$ concentrations showed a tendency to decrease, but emissions have not declined. In addition, asthma and atopic dermatitis correlated with similar emissions, but allergic disease showed no connection. Conclusion: These results on hazardous pollutant emissions indicate that they have increased. However, no association between emissions and health effects was shown, so more research is needed.

A Study on Effect of Environmental Characteristics by Intake Mixture Temperature in Scrubber EGR System Diesel Engines

  • The effects of intake mixture temperature on performance and exhaust emissions under four kinds of engine loads were experimentally investigated by using a four-cycle, four-cylinder, swirl chamber type, water-cooled diesel engine with scrubber EGR system operating at three kinds of engine speeds. The purpose of this study is to develop the scrubber exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) control system for reducing $NO_x$ and soot emissions simultaneously in diesel engines. The EGR system is used to reduce $NO_x$ emissions. And a novel diesel soot-removal device of cylinder-type scrubber with five water injection nozzles is specially designed and manufactured to reduce soot contents in the recirculated exhaust gas to the intake system of the engine. The influences of cooled EGR and water injection, however, would be included within those of scrubber EGR system. In order to survey the effect of intake mixture temperature on performance and exhaust emissions, the intake mixtures of fresh air and recirculated exhaust gas are heated by a heating device with five heating coils made of a steel drum. It is found that the specific fuel consumption rate is considerably elevated by the increase of intake mixture temperature, and that $NO_x$ emissions are markedly decreased as EGR rates are increased and intake mixture temperature is dropped, while soot emissions are increased with increasing EGR rates and intake mixture temperature. Thus one can conclude that the performance and exhaust emissions are considerably influenced by the cooled EGR.

화력발전소 배출량 제거에 따른 여름철 O3 농도의 변화 특성 (Effect of Removal of Power Plant Emissions on the characteristics of Ozone Concentration Changes in Summer)

  • 본 연구에서는 광화학 대기질 모델인 CMAQ을 활용해 화력발전소 배출량 제거에 따른 O3 농도의 변화 특성을 분석하였다. 하동 화력발전소를 대상으로 주변 지역의 O3 농도 변화에 대한 발전소 배출량의 영향을 조사하기 위해 하동 화력발전소의 배출량 제거 전과 후의 CMAQ 수치 모의를 수행하였다. 수치 모의 결과 O3의 주요 전구 물질인 NOx (-18.87%)와 VOCs (-11.27%)의 농도가 감소한 반면에 O3 (25.24%)의 농도는 증가한 것으로 나타났다. 화력발전소 배출량 제거로 인한 NO와 O3 농도의 상대적인 변화를 비교해 본 결과 높은 음의 상관관계(R= -0.72)를 나타내는 것이 확인되었다. 이러한 결과는 O3의 농도 증가가 NO 농도 감소로 인한 O3의 적정 효과 완화로 설명 될 수 있음을 의미한다. 해당 지역의 O3의 농도 증가가 NO의 농도 감소에 주로 영향을 받은 이유는 해당 지역이 VOC-limited (i.e., NOx-saturated) 지역이기 때문으로 분석되었다. 이러한 결과는 특정 지역의 O3의 농도가 단순히 배출량의 증감에 따라 비례하게 나타나지 않을 수 있다는 것을 암시한다. 따라서 화력발전소 배출량 저감 조치로 인한 대기 중 O3 농도 개선 효과를 정확히 예측 및 평가하기 위해서는 지역 별 O3의 생성 및 소멸 기작에 대한 심도 있는 이해가 필요하다.

Atmospheric CO2 enrichment reduces wheat nitrate utilization and enhances soil N2O emissions

  • Atmospheric carbon dioxide enrichment ($eCO_2$) often increases soil nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emissions, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Emerging evidence suggests that $eCO_2$ alters plant N preference in favor of ammonium ($NH_4{^+}-N$) over nitrate ($NO_3{^-}-N$). Yet, whether and how this attributes to the enhancement of $N_2O$ emissions has not been investigated. We examined the effects of $eCO_2$ on soil $N_2O$ emissions in the presence of two N forms ($NH_4{^+}-N$ or $NO_3{^-}-N$), using wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) as a model plant. Our results showed that N forms dominated $eCO_2$ effects on plant and microbial N utilization, and thus soil $N_2O$ emissions. Elevated $CO_2$ significantly increased the rate and the sum of $N_2O$ emissions by three to four folds when $NO_3{^-}-N$, but not $NH_4{^+}-N$, was supplied. Enhanced $N_2O$ emission was related to the reduced plant $NO_3{^-}-N$ uptake in wheat. We propose a new conceptual model in which $eCO_2$-inhibition of plant $NO_3{^-}-N$ uptake and/or $CO_2$-enhancement of soil labile C enhances the N and/or C availability for denitrifiers and increases the intensity and/or the duration of $N_2O$ emissions. Together, these findings suggest that to enhance plant N use efficiency and reduce $N_2O$ emission, crop breeding and management need to consider altered plant preference of N sources under future $CO_2$ scenarios.
