This study was conducted to investigate the effect of three different photoperiods on growth performance, blood properties, and stress indicators in broiler chicks between 1-7 days after hatching. Two hundred and fifty-two 1-day-old male broiler chicks (57.0±0.12 g) were divided into three treatments, with 4 replicates per treatment and 22 birds per replicate subjected to three different photoperiods of 24L, 22L/2D and 18L/6D. A light-emitting diode bulb served as the light source, with an illuminance of 30 lx. As an experimental diet, a commercial feed based on a corn-soybean meal, with 22% CP and 3,150 kcal/kg ME diet, and water were fed ad libitum. Body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and liver weight ratio showed a statistically significant difference between the 18L/6D and 24L treatments (P<0.05), but with no significant difference between the 22L/2D treatment and either the 24L or 18L/6D treatment. The breast meat ratio was 5.59% in the 18L/6D treatment group, which was lower than that of other treatment groups (P<0.05). The triglyceride levels were highest (P<0.05) in the 18L/6D treatment among treatments, but alanine aminotransferase levels were significantly higher (P<0.05) in the 22L/2D treatment than in the 24L treatment. Levels of cytokines, i.e., Interleukin-6 and Tumor Necrosis Factor-α did not show a significant difference among the treatments, but corticosterone content was significantly higher (P<0.05) in the 24L treatment than in the 18L/6D treatment. In conclusion, 22 hours of lighting is appropriate between 1~7 days after hatching, considering growth performance and the overall health of broiler chicks.
The main objective of this experiment was to investigate the selection efficiency for clear rice by the application of the wx-carrier technique in rice. Twelve semi-dwarf waxy lines were bred through backcrosses to the two recurrent semi-dwarf parents, IR667 and IR1317, utilizing six different waxy cultivars as waxy donor parent. These waxy lines were crossed to three clear non-waxy varieties, IR24, Suweon 287 and Suweon294. Their F$_3$ seeds were separated into waxy and non-waxy and the clearness of non-waxy grains were counted. The results are summarized as follows: l. Mean clearness per plant for twelve waxy lines ranged from 3.7% to 78.9% at the 35 days after heading. It was higher in the lines which utilized IR 1317 as recurrent parent and it was lower in the lines which utilized IR667 as recurrent parent. Mean clearness per plant for recurrent parent, IRl317 and IR667 were 47.6% and 5.6% respectively. The clear non-waxy parents; Suweon287, IR24 and Suweon294 showed 83.7% 80.5% and 73.5% clearness respectively. 2. Mean clearness of F$_3$ seeds of the crosses between different waxy parents and IR24, Suweon 294 and Suweon 287 ranged 16.7-73.9%, 21.9-42.9% and 10.6-26.9%, respectively. IR24 crosses showed the highest mean clearness. 3. Highly positive correlation was found between the clearness of F$_3$ seeds of Suweon 287 crosses and those of Suweon294. 4. Significant differences were observed in mean clearness of F$_3$ seeds of the crosses between the different waxy lines, which was bred through the same number of backcrosses to the same recurrent parent, and a clear non-waxy parent. Crosses of IR1317 recurrent parent showed higher mean clearness than those of IR667 recurrent parent. 5. In some crosses, clearness was higher in homo-non-waxy than in hetero-non-waxy, but, in other crosses it was higher in hetero-non-waxy. Thus no distinct pattern in the segregation of clearness was observed along the homo-non-waxy or hetero-non-waxy. 6. From the results it was concluded that, the selection efficiency for the clear rice can be improved by choosing the proper waxy parent, as well as proper recurrent parent under the wx-carrier technique.
In order to confirm the effect of climatic consumption index (C C I) on the number of spikelets and yield of rice, 3 levels of shading rates such as 0, 25, 50% of full light were treated during the tillering stage, reproductive growth stage and ripening period, respectively, in a phytotron controlled with day/ night temperature of 20/10$^{\circ}C$ and 30/20$^{\circ}C$, and field at Crop Experiment Station, Suwon, Korea. The results are as follows: 1. As solar radiation decreased during the reproductive growth stage in 30/20$^{\circ}C$ or field condition, the number of spikelets per panicle was decreased due to the decrease of the number of differentiated secondary rachis branches and spikelets as well as the increase of the number of degenerated secondary rachis branches and spikelets. 2. Our results showed slight negative correlation between C C I of the reproductive growth stage and number of panicles per square meter and number of differentiated secondary rachis branches. On the other hand, there was highly significant positive correlation between C C I of the reproductive growth stage and the number of degenerated secondary rachis branches and spikelets, and negative correlation in number of differentiated spikelets. 3. The shading during the reproductive growth stage did not affect on the percentage of ripened grains and 1000 grains weight of hulled rice, whereas those were decreased with shading during the ripened period. 4. Influence of shading in each growing stage on the yield was severe in the order of ripened period, reproductive growth stage, tillering stage. 5. Respiration rate in Jinheung was higher than that of Tongil at low temperature, but reversed above 30$^{\circ}C$. Respiratory coefficients (Q$\sub$10/) of Tongil and Jinheung were 2.74 and 1.96, respectively. Respiration/ photosynthesis ratio in Jinheung was higher than that of Tongil at low temperature, while higher in Tongil above 32$^{\circ}C$. 6. Transportation of $\^$14/C was restricted at 20/10$^{\circ}C$ in Tongil, however, there was no differences at 30/20$^{\circ}C$ in both Tongil and Jinheung. The influence of shading on the transportation of $\^$14/C did not affect at 20/10$^{\circ}C$, but it was hampered with shading at 30/20$^{\circ}C$ in both varieties.
Seedling emergences of four rice varieties (Dongjinbyeo, Dadajo, Galsaekggarak-sharebyeo, and Italiconaverneco) and three barnyardgrass species(Echjnochloa oryzjcola, E. crus-gali var. crus gali E. crus-gali var. praticola) were evaluated in relation to soil strength. Soil strength was varied by compressing the entire volume of soil with a hydraulic jack so as to be 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 6kg /$\textrm{cm}^2$. Soil strength was measured with a penetrometer (Yamanaka type) and soil covering above the seed was 4cm deep. Experiments were conducted at two air temperature conditions of 17 and $25^{\circ}C$. At a soil strength of up to 2kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, little or no decrease in seedling emergence occurred in all rice varieties and barnyardgrasses tested. Above that value, seedling emergence decreased progressively as the soil strength increased. The degree of decrease was greatest in Dongjinbyeo and smallest in Dadajo among tested rice varieties, and greatest in Echinochloa oryzicola among barnyardgrasses, being greater in barnyardgrasses than rice. Seedling emergence was delayed almost linearly as the soil strength increased. The delay was greatest in Dongjinbyeo among rice varieties and in Echinochloa oryzicola among barnyardgrasses. Mesocotyl length increased as soil strength increased up to 2 to 3kg / $\textrm{cm}^2$ in Dongjinbyeo and Dadajo in 17$^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, and up to 6kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in Galsaekggaraksharebyeo and Italiconaverneco in $25^{\circ}C$. Dongjinbyeo showed the least elongation of mesocotyl among rice varieties in any soil strength. The total length of mesotyl, first internode and incomplete leaf showed little variation with soil strength. The total length was longer than the 4cm covering depth in other varieties except Dongjinbyeo. This might have caused the lower emergence rate in Dongjinbyeo than other varieties in higher soil strength.
This study was conducted to investigate the variation of chemical components in stagnant water under different mulching amount of barley straw after combine harvesting and the effect of stagnent water on the germinatidn and seedling elongation at early growth stage in rice. pH was lower in barley straw mulching than non-mulching and decreased with increasing of mulched barley straw but was not different among treatments in stagnant water at 15 days after flooding. Dissolved oxygen decreased with the increasing of mulched barley straw and increased with the passing of time, while saline content increased with the increasing of mulched barley straw, showing significant difference among treatments, was peaked at 15 days after flooding and thereafter, decreased. NH4-N was higher 5 days after flooding with thicker barley straw mulching but was not different at 10 days. N $O_3$-N increased up to 10 to 15 days after flooding and increased with thicker barley straw mulching. Water soluble phosphorus and cation content ( $K^{+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$)were higher in thicker barley straw mulching and peaked at 10 and 15 days after flooding. Germination rate was decreased by thicker straw mulching and was high in order of medium late, medium and early maturing rice variety. Keumobyeo, Gancheokbyeo, Ilpumbyeo, Dongjinbyeo and Gyehwabyeo showed higher germination rate. Seedling elongation at early growth stage was poorer with increasing of barley. straw mulching. Ilpumbyeo had good seedling elongation in one time amount of barley straw mulching and Shinunbongbyeo, Unjangbyeo, Nonganbyeo and Dongjinbyeo had poorer, in two times.mes.
Tobacco and ginseng plants differed in responses to varied light intensities. Tobacco showed high in CO$_2$ uptake and RuBPCase activity at 1900 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, being high by 3.7 times and 2.7 times than ginseng respectively. Close positive relationships existed between CO$_2$ uptake and RuBPCase activity in tobacco. However, ginseng showed negative correlation. The activity of glycolate oxidase and malate dehydrogenase in tobacco was high at 1900 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, but those of ginseng was high at 1000 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/. Nitrate reductase activity of tobacco at 1900 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/ was 2 times higher than that at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, while that of ginseng was no detected in all plots. The content of protein and chlorophyll in tobacco was 2.2 times and 1.5 times higher than in ginseng at the most efficient light intensity. The ratio of chlorophyll a/b in tobacco was low at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, while that of ginseng was low at 1000 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/. The relationships between protein and chlorophyll was high positive correlation. However, on 5 days after treatment, ginseng showed negative correlation at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/. Tobacco and ginseng showed different leaf soluble protein patterns on SDS-gel electrophoresis. The molecular weights of two major band were 50 KD and 15 KD in both plants. The major bands in tobacco were thinned at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/, while those in ginseng thinned at 1000 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/ from 15days after treatment. Disappeared band was 45 KD at 500 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/ in tobacco, but that of ginseng was 47 KD at 1000 ${\mu}$ E m/sup-2/ sec$\^$-1/.
The present study was carried out to get the basic information for clarifying physiological mechanism of breaking dormancy and sprouting in Panax ginseng roots. Changes in Abscisic acid (ABA) content and Gibberellin (GA) activity were investigated in one-year-old root during stratification at 4$^{\circ}C$. 15$^{\circ}C$. and 15$^{\circ}C$ after 60day-treatment at 4$^{\circ}C$. Sprouting rate at 15$^{\circ}C$ was 35% in 30days storage at 4$^{\circ}C$ and 100% in longer than 60days, but there was no sprout in both the constant treatment at 4$^{\circ}C$ or 15$^{\circ}C$ regardless of the treatment period. The longer the period of low temperature treatment. number of days to the first and 50% sprouting was shortened, and number of days to 50% from first sprouting was also shortened. ABA content in the upper part of root(contained bud) was gradually increased at both 4$^{\circ}C$ and 15$^{\circ}C$ as the treatment period was extended. and the degree of increase was higher at 15$^{\circ}C$. In the lower part. it showed a slight increase at 15$^{\circ}C$. while showed little change at 4$^{\circ}C$ throughout the treatment period. In the 15$^{\circ}C$ treatment after 60days at 4$^{\circ}C$, it was greatly increased in the upper part. while rather slightly decreased in the lower part of root. GA activity in the upper part was gradually decreased at both 4$^{\circ}C$ and 15$^{\circ}C$, and the degree of decrease was higher at 15$^{\circ}C$. In the lower part. it was similar tendency to those in the upper part. In the 15$^{\circ}C$ treatment after 60days at 4$^{\circ}C$. it was remarkably increased in both the upper and lower part. The increase was great in the low Rf region, while the decrease appeared relatively in the high Rf region compared to those of 60day-treatment at 4$^{\circ}C$. The above results indicated that the breaking dormancy and sprouting of bud were closely associated with the degree of GA activities in response to temperature condition .during stratification rather than the direct effect associated with the changes in ABA content.
The therapeutic potential of phosphodiesterase 4(PDE4) inhibitors in inflammatory diseases including some autoimmune diseases has been explored recently with some hopeful results. These PDE4 inhibitors are thought to show their anti-inflammatory effect by down-regulating tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-$\alpha$) production in lymphocytes and macrophages. A high concentration of TNF-$\alpha$has been found in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovium and reducing TNF-$\alpha$using biological agents was proven to be an effective RA treatment. To test the possibility of using PDE4 inhibitors for RA treatment, the effects of a newly synthesized PDE4 inhibitor, DWP205505, on TNF-$\alpha$ and IL-10 production was tested in cells isolated from normal peripheral blood and rheumatoid arthritis synovial fluid. Cytokine production was assayed at the protein level by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and at the mRNA expression level by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Another PDE4 inhibitor, RP73401, was used for comparison. DWP205505 and RP73401 had no harmful effect on cell viability up to 10 $\mu$M concentration during the 24 h culture period. DWP205505 as well as RP73401 significantly reduced TNF-$\alpha$ secretion from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (pBMC) and synovial fluid mononuclear cells (SFMC). The effect of DWP205505 or RP73401 treatment on the mRNA expression of TNF-$\alpha$ was also studied in LPS-stimulated PBMC and SFMC. TNF-$\alpha$ mRNA expression was increased by LPS stimulation and both of the PDE4 inhibitors suppressed TNF-$\alpha$ mRNA expression. For interleukin-l0 (IL-l0), a little different results were obtained from PBMC and SFMC; IL-l0 secretion was unaffected by LPS stimulation and only minimally affected by both of the PDE4 inhibitors in PBMC. In unstimulated SFMC, DWP205505 and RP73401 slightly enhanced IL-10 secretion, while they reduced IL-l0 secretion from LPS-stimulated SFMC where IL-l0 secretion was a lot higher than unstimulated SFMC. These results suggest that the newly synthesized PDE4 inhibitor DWP205505 may have anti-rheumatoid arthritis activity.
Soil crusting and hardening as a result of drying after rainfall were examined in relation to seedling emergence by employing five rice varieties (Italiconaverneco, Dadazo, and Galsaekggarakshare, Dongjinbyeo and Sumjinbyeo) and two barnyardgrass species (E. crus-gallj var. oryzjcola and E. crus-galli var. praticola). Sandy loam, loam, and silty loam soils were used. The artificial rainfall of 0, 20 and 40mm were applied after sowing and covering with 4cm soil. Air temperature and solar radiation averaged over 9 days after seeding was 31.3$^{\circ}C$ and 16.9MJ /m$^2$, respectively. Soil strength increased rapidly by drying after artificial rainfall, being greater in soils with greater amount of clay and artificial rainfall. Soil crust was formed on the surface with artificial rainfall in all soils tested. However, soil crust was exfoliated in silty loam and loam soil, and lifted as seedlings emerge. Seedling emergence of rice varieties was decreased by rainfall treatments. Sumjinbyeo and Dongjinbyeo showed much poorer seedling emergence especially in sandy loam soil than the other varieties. Poor seedling emergence of these varieties might have been caused by delayed seedling emergence which had made them expose to greater soil strength. Seedling emergence of barnyardgrasses showed no differences among soil textures and rainfall treatments, because they emerged rapidly before soil crusting and hardening were proceeded enough to hamper seedling emergence. Seedling emergence of Sumjinbyeo and Dongjinbyeo decreased with increasing soil strength averaged over 3 days to 5 days after seeding, being lowered to 80% at soil strength of 1.0kg/cm$^2$ and to 50% at 1.7kg/cm$^2$. Emergence speed of barnyardgrasses was faster than rice varieties, and E. crus-galli var. oryzjcola than E. crus-galli var. praticola. Italiconaverneco and Dadazo showed faster emergence in rice varieties. Galsaekggarakshare showed slower emergence speed than these two varieties with similar seedling emergence percentage. The greater and faster elongations of mesocotyl and incomplete leaf in rice, and of mesocotyl in barnyardgrass were the characteristics responsible for higher seedling emergence rate in the environment examined.
The cathode, which is one of the four major components of a lithium secondary battery, is an important component responsible for the energy density of the battery. The mixing process of active material, conductive material, and polymer binder is very essential in the commonly used wet manufacturing process of the cathode. However, in the case of mixing conditions of the cathode, since there is no systematic method, in most cases, differences in performance occur depending on the manufacturer. Therefore, LiMn2O4 (LMO) cathodes were prepared using a commonly used THINKY mixer and homogenizer to optimize the mixing method in the cathode slurry preparation step, and their characteristics were compared. Each mixing condition was performed at 2000 RPM and 7 min, and to determine only the difference in the mixing method during the manufacture of the cathode other experiment conditions (mixing time, material input order, etc.) were kept constant. Among the manufactured THINKY mixer LMO (TLMO) and homogenizer LMO (HLMO), HLMO has more uniform particle dispersion than TLMO, and thus shows higher adhesive strength. Also, the result of the electrochemical evaluation reveals that HLMO cathode showed improved performance with a more stable life cycle compared to TLMO. The initial discharge capacity retention rate of HLMO at 69 cycles was 88%, which is about 4.4 times higher than that of TLMO, and in the case of rate capability, HLMO exhibited a better capacity retention even at high C-rates of 10, 15, and 20 C and the capacity recovery at 1 C was higher than that of TLMO. It's postulated that the use of a homogenizer improves the characteristics of the slurry containing the active material, the conductive material, and the polymer binder creating an electrically conductive network formed by uniformly dispersing the conductive material suppressing its strong electrostatic properties thus avoiding aggregation. As a result, surface contact between the active material and the conductive material increases, electrons move more smoothly, changes in lattice volume during charging and discharging are more reversible and contact resistance between the active material and the conductive material is suppressed.
