  • Electrostatic spinnings were performed with the solutions of PAN/DMF to be nanofiber webs. The diameter of the fibers ranged from 200 nm to 1000 nm depending on the PAN concentration and on the applied DC voltage. The nanofibers were oxidatively stabilized and subsequently carbonized up to $1000^{\circ}C$ with carbonization yield of 40%. The bulk electric conductivity of the carbonized web increased form $6.8{\times}10^{-3}S/cm$ to 1.96 S/cm while the carbonizaton temperature increased from $700^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, a nickel hexacyanoferrate and manganese dioxide-polyacrylonitrile (NM-PAN) composite was synthesized and used for the sorptive removal of Co2+, Sr2+, and Cs+ Cs+ in radioactive laundry wastewater. Single- and multi-solute competitive sorptions onto NM-PAN were investigated. The Freundlich (Fr), Langmuir (Lang), Kargi-Ozmıhci (K-O), Koble-Corrigan (K-C), and Langmuir-Freundlich (Lang-Fr) models satisfactorily predicted all the single sorption data. The sorption isotherms were nonlinearly favorable (Freundlich coefficient, NF = 0.385-0.426). Cs+ has the highest maximum sorption capacity (qmL = 0.855 mmol g-1) for NM-PAN compared to Co2+ and Sr2+, wherein the primary mechanism was the physical process (mainly ion-exchange). The competition between the metal ions in the binary and ternary systems reduced the respective sorption capacities. Binary and ternary sorption models, such as the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) model coupled with single sorption models of IAST-Fr, IAST-K-O, IAST-K-C and IAST-Lang-Fr, were fitted to the experimental data; among these, the IAST-Freundlich model showed the most satisfactory prediction for the binary and ternary systems. The presence of cationic surfactants highly affected the sorption on NM-PAN due to the increase in distribution coefficients (Kd) of Co2+ and Cs+.

  • Polyacrylonitrile nanofibers were fabricated by co-electrospinning technique and were characterized using scanning electron microscopy(SEM). We have evaluated systematically the effects of the important processing parameters affected on the morphology of the formed fibers; voltage, solution concentration and tip to collector distance. PAN nanofibers of about 200 nm${\sim}$2500 nm in diameter were well fabricated at the polymer concentration of 7.5 wt%${\sim}$15 wt%. It has been found that the average diameter of PAN nanofibers increased with increasing the concentration of PAN solution due to the reduction of whipping and splitting for the high viscosity solution. we also found an evidence that the applied voltage is strongly correlated with the distribution of nanofibers and the uniformed size of nanofibers were obtained at electrostatic value of 1 kV/cm.

  • Soluble polyaniline was synthesized by attaching titanium isoproxide ($Ti(OPr)_4$) to the amine group of the aniline. Approximately 1 to 1 molar ratio of aniline and $Ti(OPr)_4$ was mixed and polymerized with ammonium persulfate. The FTIR result showed clear difference between $TiO_2$-aniline composite ($TiO_2An$) and $TiO_2$-polyaniline composite ($TiO_2PAn$). Although the $TiO_2An$ had negligible UV-visible absorption, the $TiO_2PAn$ showed strong absorption in the UV-visible region. Photoluminescence (PL) peaks of $TiO_2An$ were shifted toward red with the reduction of the excitation energy, which could be due to the multiple emission centers. The luminescence peak shift stopped at 501 nm. The PL spectra of $TiO_2PAn$ exhibited three emission peaks at 2.88 eV (430 nm), 2.48 eV (501 nm) and 2.22 eV (558 nm). The new emission center (2.22 eV) was observed after polymerization. Field emission scanning electron microscope image showed crack-free composite film.

  • A spectrophotometric and first derivative spectrophotometric method was developed in aquatic Tween 80 micellar solutions for selective determination of nickel without using any pre-separation step. 1-(2-Pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN), as a sensitive chromogenic complexing agent formed a red-colored Ni(II)-PAN complex in Tween 80 media with satisfactory solubility and stability. Conditions such as pH, PAN concentration, type and concentration of micellizing agent were optimized. Molar absorptivity of Ni-PAN complex was found $4.62\;{\times}\;10^4L\;cm^{?1}\;mol^{?1}$ at 569 nm, under the optimum condition. Calibration graphs were derived by zero, first and second derivative spectrophotometry at maximum wavelengths of 569, 578 and 571 nm with linear ranges of 30-1800, 20-2500 and 30-2000 ng $mL^{?1}$ , respectively. Precision as standard deviation as well as accuracy as recovery percent were in the range of 1-20 ng $mL^{?1}$, and 93.3-103.3%, respectively, for the entire of the linear ranges. Spectrophotometric detection limit was 3 ng $mL^{?1}$ and effects of diverse ions on the first derivative determination of nickel were studied to investigate selectivity of the method. Interferences of cobalt and copper on the nickel determination were prevented using o-phenanthroline as masking agent. The recommended procedures were applied to the various synthetic and stainless steel alloys, tea leaves and human hair, with satisfactory results.

  • 1-(2-Pyridylazo)-2-Naphthol (PAN) has been widely used as a spectrophotometric reagent and metallochromic indicator for many metal ions. In this work, the chelate reagent of PAN was used as mobile phase additive for the separation of metal ions by reversed phase chromatography. Metal ions could be detected by monitoring the effluent at 570 nm with spectrophotometric detector. In order to investigate retention behaviors of the metal ions, the chromatograms and capacity factors were obtained as the variation of pH, ionic strength and composition of organic modifier in mobile phase. Under the obtained optimum conditions, the mixtures of Fe(III), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Co(II) could be separated successfully and the calibration curves under the recommended conditions showed an excellent linearity. The detection limits(S/N) were feasible at the nanogram level.

  • The reinforcing effect of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber were investigated. The tensile fracture images of the composite fibers demonstrate that SWNTs are well dispersed in PAN matrix as bundles (ropes) ca. 20nm in thickness. It was found that SWNTs play a role not only to reinforce but also to toughen the PAN fiber by increasing breaking strain as well as modulus and strength of the fiebrs. The composite fibers exhibited improved dimensional stability at elevated temperature compared to the neat PAN fiber.

  • Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, which are pH-sensitive and exhibit soft actuation as a linear actuator and artificial muscles, were prepared by electrospinning to investigate the effect of viscosity on the morphology of PAN fibers. Experimental results revealed that higher viscosity is critical for the formation of unbeaded nanofibers because surface tension is almost constant throughout the experiment. Uniform, smooth, and continuous fibers with diameters of about 700 nm were achieved for the 10 wt% PAN fibers at a flow rate of 0.5 mL/h and an electric field of 0.875 kV/cm.

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as a significant air pollutant, is generated mainly from the burning of fossil fuels, building materials using painting, etc. The inhalation of a certain amount of VOCs can be deleterious to human health, e.g., headaches, nausea and vomiting. In addition, it can also cause memory loss and even increase the rate of leukemia. Therefore, as one of the methods for reducing VOCs in air, polyacrylonitrile/fly ash (PAN/FA) composite nanofibrous membranes were fabricated by electrospinning. To observe their VOCs adsorption capacity, the morphological structure of PAN/FA nanofibrous mats was investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and the VOCs (chloroform, benzene, toluene, and xylene) adsorption capacity of PAN/FA membranes were tested by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The results indicated that the PAN nanofiber containing 40 wt. % FA powder had the smallest fiber diameter of 283 nm; they also showed the highest VOCs adsorption capacity compared to other composite membranes.

  • Polyancrylonitrile nanofiber membrane (PAM) was prepared by using the electrospinning method with a solution of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) in DMF. The pore-diameter of PAMs and the number of PAM's layer were controlled for the microfiltration (MF) application. In addition, in order to improve the water-flux, AN-PEGMA copolymers have been synthesized via free radical polymerization with poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate and azobisisobutylronitrile (AIBN), and then PAN/AN-PEGMA nanofiber membranes (PAM/APM) were prepared by electrospinning with a mixture of PAN (9 wt%) and AN-PEGMA (3 wt%) in DMF (88 wt%). The prepared membranes were investigated with FT-IR and E.D.S. It was confirmed through scanning electron microscope (SEM), porometer, and porosity analysis that the porous membrane with a uniform diameter (400~600 nm) and a uniform pore characteristics (0.5~0.4 ${\mu}m$) was prepared. For the MF application, water-flux measurements were investigated and then the result was shown that the water permeability value of PAM/APMs introduced AN-PEGMA copolymers was relatively higher than that of the PVdF commercial membrane. From these results, PAN nanofiber membranes prepared by electrospinning could be utilized as a MF membrane.
