Analysis of Protein and Moisture Contents in Pea(Pisum sativum L. Using Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy

  • This study was conducted to establish a rapid analysis method for determining protein and moisture contents of pea. Ninety and eighty pea (Pisum sativum L.) lines were analyzed to determine protein and moisture contents, respectively using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy. Simple correlations (${\gamma}$) of protein content in a ground sample and an intact grain sample by an automatic regression method were 0.978 and 0.910, respectively. Simple correlations by partial least square regression/principal component analysis (PLS/PCA) methods were 0.982 and 0.925, respectively. Standard error of performance (SEP) in protein content was the lowest value, 0.446 in ground sample by PLS/PCA methods. Simple correlation of moisture content was the highest at 0.871 in ground samples. when using a standard regression method. Accuracy for the moisture content was slightly lower than for protein content. It was concluded that the NIRS method would be applicable only for rapid determination of protein content in pea.

Rapid Determination of Seed and Stem Content in Red Pepper Powder by Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopic Analysis (근적외 분광분석법에 의한 분말고추중의 씨앗 및 꼭지혼입량의 신속한 측정)

  • Red pepper peels stored with seeds or stems in the powder state at $30^{\circ}C$ resulted in decrease of quality components such as capsanthin, capsaicin and total sugars. The effect of seeds on the quality deterioration was larger than stems. A near-infrared reflectance spectroscopic(NIRS) method was evaluated for the determination of seed and stem contents in red pepper peels. The standard error of prediction was 1.76% in seeds and 0.43% in stems. It is concluded that the NIRS method is suitable for the determination of seen and stem contents in red pepper powder.

  • With the technological development, benefits of Virtual Reality (VR) has become a key of medium in communication research. In addition, explaining human minds with physiological data has become more popular since more accurate and detailed data can be expressed. However, reading brain signals in a virtual environment setting with psychophysiological measures (e.g. EEG and fNIRS) has remained a difficulty for researchers due to a technical constraint. Since a combination of cables for brain measures attached to a head cap obstruct wearing a Head-Mounted Display (HMD) over the cap, measuring brain activities with multiple channels on several areas of the brain is inappropriate in the VR setting. Therefore, we have developed a new brain measurement cap that includes probe connectors and brackets enabling a direct connection to the HMD. We highly expect this method would contribute to cognitive psychology research measuring brain signals with new technology.

Studies on Thermal Stability and Cure Behavior of Epoxy Resins using Electron-beam Curing Technique (전자선 경화를 이용한 에폭시 수지의 열안정성과 경화동력학에 관한 연구)

  • The di-functional epoxy resins, i.e., diglycidylether of bisphenol A(DGEBA) and diglycidylethere of bisphenol F(DGEBF) were initiated by cationic catalyst, i.e., benzylquinoxalinium hexafluoroantimonate(BQH) using electron-beam(EB) technique. And the effect of structure of DGEBA and DGEBF on thermal stabilities and cure behaviors was investigated. According to the experimental results, the decomposed activation energy based on Horowitz-Metzger method was higher in the case of DGEBA, but intergral procedural decomposition temperature(IPDT) of DGEBA was lower than DGEBF. This could be interpreted in terms of high crosslink density resulted from hydroxyl bond of DGEBF backbone. It was confirmed in increasing the hydroxyl band at $7000\;cm^{-1}$ and $5235\;cm^{-1}$ using near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS).

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility to characterize and classify waxes applied on some type of cheeses to obtain good stability during handling and transportation. Generally, waxes are obtained from the petrochemical industry, nowadays there is the possibility to also use biodegradable waxes produced from microorganisms. Preliminary studies were carried out to optimize sample presentation in NIR analysis, such as melting conditions (influence of temperature) and coat thickness of wax. 12 waxes (biodegradable or not) were analysed by using an InfraAlyzer 500 (Bran+Luebbe). The sample size was performed cutting pieces of 1.5 cm (height) x 1.5 cm (width) x 1.5 mm (thickness), previously melted at 9$0^{\circ}C$. NIR spectra were collected at room temperature, and data were processed by Sesame Software (Bran+Luebbe) to evaluate qualitative differences among samples by cluster analysis. Waxes were gathered on the basis of their origin (petrochemical or microbial). To better understand the significance of the NIRS bands discriminating among waxes, a two-dimensional correlation with FT-IR spectra, collected by a FT-IR/ATR 420 (JASCO) instrument, was made using 2DCORR program (Galactic Industries). On the basis of its classification power, NIRS appears to be a promising tool when used in routine analysis for a qualitative control of raw materials.

The Experience in Dose Measurement of IVR with Glass Dosimeter System

  • It is reported that exposure for the patient and the medical staff from IVR is large. Direct measurement of patient exposure is difficult, since the measurement disturbs reading of images. The fluorescence glass-dosimeter system consisting of small-size glass chips is developed in recent years. Owing to its small size and physical characteristics, direct monitoring of surface dose may be feasible. The dose measurement for patient and medical staff during head interventional radiology (IVR) examinations was tried by using the fluorescence glass-dosimeter system. A dose response of the glass dosimeter is almost linear in large dose range but its energy dependency is high. About 20% variation of sensitivity was observed in the effective energy of 45-60keV which was used in IVR. In spite of this shortcoming, the fluorescence glass-dosimeter system is a convenient means for a dose monitoring during IVR performance.

  • 최근 신경과학 분야에서 대뇌피질 영역 간 연관성 분석은 신경학적 질병 (자폐증, 간질, 정신 분열증)의 분석 및 진단에 적용되고 있다. 기존 대뇌피질 영역 간 연관성 분석은 뇌전도 (EEG), 기능적 자기공명영상 (fMRI), 뇌자도 (MEG)등이 이용되었지만, 뇌전도의 낮은 공간분해능, 기능적 자기공명영상의 낮은 시분해능 등은 영역 간 연관성 분석에 단점으로 작용되고 있다. 반면, 근적외선 분광법(NIRS)은 대뇌피질에서의 혈류변화(oxy-, deoxy-hemoglobin)를 비침습적이며 빠른 시분해능으로 측정할 수 있는 방법으로 최근 신경과학 분야에 응용되고 있다 [1-2]. 본 논문에서는 근적외선 분광법을 이용한 대뇌피질영역 간 연관성 분석의 효용성을 입증하기 위해, 쥐의 수염자극 시 대응되는 지역 (일차-, 이차 체감각피질, 일차 운동피질 영역)에서의 혈류변화 신호의 영역 간 연관성 분석을 하였다. 본 연구결과에 의하면 수염자극 시 일차-, 이차 체감각피질 영역에서의 방향성은 확인할 수 없었고, 일차-, 이차 체감각피질 영역에서 일차 운동피질영역으로의 방향성은 확인할 수 있었다. 본 결과는 기존 수염자극 시 활성화되는 전기신호의 패턴과 일치하며, 향후 신경과학적 질병의 분석 및 진단에 근적외선을 이용한 대뇌피질 영역 간 연관성 분석이 유용할 수 있음을 보여준다.

Using Image Analysis Technique to Test Grain Hardness in Wheat (주상분석법을 이용한 밀의 경.연질성 구분)

  • The development of new approaches for wheat grain hardness assessment may impact the grain industry in marketing, milling and breeding. This experiment was to develop a new method for fast identification between softness and hardness, and for maintaining germinability of seed after measurement in wheat. Results from the comparisons of accuracy and significance between image analysis and conventional methods(NIRS and textrometer) were summarized. Data obatined from image analysis for grain hardness did not show any difference from those of the conventional methods. The protein content analyzed by micro-Kjeldahl method was significantly correlated with the grain hardness measured by image analysis, textrometer, and NIRS. The analysis for wheat grain hardness using image analysis may be used as an alternative method to the conventional methods. This method also takes the seeds after analysis can be utilized as breeding materials in early generations.

Evaluation of the Potential for the Adulteration Screening of Imported Hay by Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (근적외선분광법을 이용한 수입건초의 이물질 혼입판정 가능성 평가)

  • Near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to study the potential of adulteration of imported forage. Hay samples were prepared two set ; calibration set and validation one. The former were mixed 12 sets from 100% to 50% with Yangcho (Chinese leymus, leymus chinensis Trin.) and the latter were adulterated with 6 set of 8% to 38% in 5% interval. Mixed materials with Yangcho were rice straw, reed and alfalfa. Stand error of prediction (SEP) in calibration equation for alfalfa, reed and rice straw were 0.97, 0.97 and 0.99 also 0.54, 0.86 and 1.26%. Multiple correlation coefficient ($R^2$) for alfalfa, reed and rice straw were 0.99, 0.97 and 0.99. SEP in the same samples were 1.88, 2.15 and 1.49, respectively.
