In this study, we performed basic researches to develop wet purification system for improving air qualities of ventilation in semiconductor manufacturing process. Using 0.5 M aqueous solution of $KMnO_4$, 50 ppm of $NH_3$, SOx and NOx were reduced to 99% successfully. However, the removal of $O_3$ was limited to $22{\sim}30%$ for all the tested chemical solutionsincluding $KMnO_4$. Therefore, adoption of a dry ozone filter is necessary to reduce $O_3$ below a satisfactory level. For all the chemical solutions tested, NOx removal efficiency increased as NOx was mixed with $O_3$. As chemical solution was sprayed using water spraying system equipped with air atomizing type nozzle, the removal efficiencies of gaseous pollutants increased due to the increase of gas-liquid interfacial area.
This study was carried out to investigate the influence of artificial zeolite on the change of temperature, gas emission, water content and chemical properties during the composting process with the mixture of animal feces, broken bark and extruded rice hull. Artificial zeolite was added 0, 0.5, 1, 3 and 5% volume of the raw composting material, and proceeded 1.2m every day with mobile stacking escalator. Temperature was increased, and water content was decreased in the composting pile by addition of artificial zeolite. This caused to accelerate decomposition of organic matter during composting. $NH_3$ was emitted the highest at 6th day after stacking, then decreased gradually. And addition of artificial zeolite caused to decrease greatly in $NH_3$ emission from composting pile. As result of this, content of nitrogen in the compost was increased by addition of artificial zeolite. Emission of $CH_4$ was the highest at early stacking stage, and that was decreased drastically at 8th day. Emission of $CH_4$ was also decreased greatly by addition of artificial zeolite at 5th days after stacking. It may be resulted from adsorption of $CH_4$ into the molecular sieve structure of artificial zeolite and low water content by high temperature fermentation.
This study aimed to investigate whether nociceptin contributes to the alterations in cerebral blood flow (CBF) regulation following postnatal exposure to ethanol in Sprague-Dawley rats. Animals received ethanol twice a day, 2 hr apart, on postnatal 6, 7 and 8 days. The changes in regional CBF (rCBF) in response to the changes in mean arterial blood pressure were determined at 4-, 8-, and 12-week of age by laser-Doppler flowmetry. Hypotension was induced by the gradual withdrawal of blood from arterial catheter, and the reversal of blood pressure was produced by the reinfusion of blood. Expression of nociceptin-like immunoreactivity was determined in dura mater and cerebral cortex using immunohistochemistry. Postnatal exposure to ethanol almost abolished the autoregulation of rCBF in all age groups. Pretreatment with nociceptin but not with [$Nphe^1$]nociceptin(1-13)$NH_2$, a selective competitive nociceptin receptor antagonist, 5 min prior to ethanol administration preserved the autoregulation of rCBF in all age groups. Postnatal exposure to ethanol markedly increased the expressions of nociceptin-like immunoreactivity in the dura mater and cerebral cortex, both of which were significantly inhibited by pretreatment with 7-nitroindazole monosodium salt as well as aminoguanidine 5 min prior to ethanol administration in all age groups. The values of arterial blood gas analysis were not significantly different from the basal levels in all groups. These results suggest that nociceptin deeply contributes to the compensatory mechanisms for the nitric oxide-dependent alterations in CBF autoregulation following postnatal exposure to ethanol.

Butyrate is known to play a significant role in energy metabolism and regulating genomic activities that influence rumen nutrition utilization and function. Thus, this study investigated the effects of an isolated butyrate-producing bacteria, Clostridium saccharobutylicum, in rumen butyrate production, fermentation parameters and microbial population in Holstein-Friesian cow. An isolated butyrate-producing bacterium from the ruminal fluid of a Holstein-Friesian cow was identified and characterized as Clostridium saccharobutylicum RNAL841125 using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic analyses. The bacterium was evaluated on its effects as supplement on in vitro rumen fermentation and microbial population. Supplementation with $10^6CFU/ml$ Clostridium saccharobutylicum increased (p < 0.05) microbial crude protein, butyrate and total volatile fatty acids concentration but had no significant effect on $NH_3-N$ at 24 h incubation. Butyrate and total VFA concentrations were higher (p < 0.05) in supplementation with $10^6CFU/ml$ Clostridium saccharobutylicum compared with control, with no differences observed for total gas production, $NH_3-N$ and propionate concentration. However, as the inclusion rate (CFU/ml) of C. saccharobutylicum was increased, reduction of rumen fermentation values was observed. Furthermore, butyrate-producing bacteria and Fibrobacter succinogenes population in the rumen increased in response with supplementation of C. saccharobutylicum, while no differences in the population in total bacteria, protozoa and fungi were observed among treatments. Overall, our study suggests that supplementation with $10^6CFU/ml$ C. saccharobutylicum has the potential to improve ruminal fermentation through increased concentrations of butyrate and total volatile fatty acid, and enhanced population of butyrate-producing bacteria and cellulolytic bacteria F. succinogenes.

Objective: This study aimed to determine the effects of different roughages in total mixed ration (TMR) inoculated with or without coculture of Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) and Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) on in vitro rumen fermentation and microbial population. Methods: Three TMRs formulations composed of different forages were used and each TMR was grouped into two treatments: non-fermented TMR and fermented TMR (F-TMR) (inoculated with coculture of L. acidophilus and B. subtilis). After fermentation, the fermentation, chemical and microbial profile of the TMRs were determined. The treatments were used for in vitro rumen fermentation to determine total gas production, pH, ammonianitrogen (NH3-N), and volatile fatty acids (VFA). Microbial populations were determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All data were analyzed as a 3×2 factorial arrangement design using the MIXED procedure of Statistical Analysis Systems. Results: Changes in the fermentation (pH, lactate, acetate, propionate, and NH3-N) and chemical composition (moisture, crude protein, crude fiber, and ash) were observed. For in vitro rumen fermentation, lower rumen pH, higher acetate, propionate, and total VFA content were observed in the F-TMR group after 24 h incubation (p<0.05). F-TMR group had higher acetate concentration compared with the non-fermented group. Total VFA was highest (p<0.05) in F-TMR containing combined forage of domestic and imported source (F-CF) and F-TMR containing Italian ryegrass silage and corn silage (F-IRS-CS) than that of TMR diet containing oat, timothy, and alfalfa hay. The microbial population was not affected by the different TMR diets. Conclusion: The use of Italian ryegrass silage and corn silage, as well as the inoculation of coculture of L. acidophilus and B. subtilis, in the TMR caused changes in the pH, lactate and acetate concentrations, and chemical composition of experimental diets. In addition, F-TMR composed with Italian ryegrass silage and corn silage altered ruminal pH and VFA concentrations during in vitro rumen fermentation experiment.
In this study, we tried to obtain the optimal conditions to reduce odors generated from pig wastewater using magnesia (MgO) through in-situ test after producing a reactor for removing odors. For this purpose, the filling amount of magnesia, the injection amount of pig wastewater, the aeration method, the aeration amount and the aeration time were considered. The field experiment was conducted at Cheongwoon Livestock Farm, which has a pig wastewater reservoir. As the amount of magnesia added to the weight of wastewater (500 kg) increases, the amount of ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) generated tended to gradually decrease. As a result of the test, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide in the pig wastewater decreased up to 65% and 77%, respectively, for 2 days aeration after 0.8% of magnesia was added to the reaction tank. The initial pH of the pig wastewater in the reactor was 8.2, and the pH was found to be 9.2 when magnesia was added up to 0.8%. In the light of this trend, it can be known that magnesia gradually increases the pH in the pig wastewater and makes it weakly alkaline. As the pH increases, part of the ammonia gas present in the pig wastewater vaporizes into the air and the remaining part is removed by precipitation after chemical bonding with dissolved magnesium ions and phosphate ions. In order to remove the odor of pig wastewater and turn it into compost, most of the existing livestock farms go through a six-month aeration process using microorganisms. In contrast, the current study proved the effect of removing odors from pig wastewater within 2 days through chemical reactions that do not affect microbial activity.
BACKGROUND: The main source of ammonia in soils, South Korea is agricultural emissions (e.g., fertilizer application and livestock manure), with the recent emission inventories reporting them to be approximately 80% of the total emissions. Ammonia as a pollutant is originated largely from agricultural activity and is an important contributor to air quality issues in South Korea. The importance of ammonia in agricultural land is also emerging. In this study, the characteristics of ammonia emission from Chinese cabbage cultivation fields with application rates of urea sere were evaluated. METHODS AND RESULTS: The ammonia emission characteristics were investigated at the different urea application rates (0, 160, 320, and 640 kg ha-1) and the ammonia emission factor in the Chinese cabbage cultivation field was calculated. As application rate of urea application increased, ammonia emissions increased proportionally. In 2020 and 2021, cumulative ammonia emissions with urea 320 kg ha-1 treatment were 39.3 and 35.2 kg ha-1, respectively for 2020 and 2021. When urea fertilizer was applied, the ammonia emission factors were 0.1217 and 0.1358 NH4+-N kg N kg-1 in 2020 and 2021, respectively. CONCLUSION(S): Ammonia emissions increased as application rate of urea increased, and the average ammonia emission factor of the Chinese cabbage cultivation field for two years was 0.129 NH4+-N kg N kg-1.

This study was performed to evaluate the effects of replacing basic total mixed ration (TMR) with fermented soybean curd, Artemisia princeps Pampanini cv. Sajabal, and spent coffee grounds by-product on rumen microbial fermentation in vitro. Soybean in the basic TMR diet (control) was replaced by the following 9 treatments (3 replicates): maximum amounts of soybean curd (SC); fermented SC (FSC); 3, 5, and 10% FSC + fermented A. princeps Pampanini cv. Sajabal (1:1, DM basis, FSCS); and 3, 5, 10% FSC + fermented coffee meal (1:1, DM basis, FSCC) of soybean. FSC, FSCS, and FSCC were fermented using Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 496, Lactobacillus fermentum ATCC 1493, Lactobacillus plantarum KCTC 1048, and Lactobacillus casei IFO 3533. Replacing dairy cow TMR with FSC treatment led to a pH value of 6 after 8 h of incubation-the lowest value measured (p<0.05), and FSCS and FSCC treatments were higher than SC and FSC treatment after 6 h (p<0.05). Gas production was higher in response to 3% FSC and FSCC treatments than the control after 4-10 h. Dry matter digestibility was increased 0-12 h after FSC treatment (p<0.05) and was the highest after 24 h of 10% FSCS treatment. $NH_3-N$ concentration was the lowest after 24 h of FSC treatment (p<0.05). Microbial protein content increased in response to treatments that had been fermented by the Lactobacillus spp. compared to control and SC treatments (p<0.05). The total concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) was increased after 6-12 h of FSC treatment (p<0.05), while the highest acetate proportion was observed 24 h after 5% and 10% FSCS treatments. The FSC of propionate proportion was increased for 0-10 h compared with among treatments (p<0.05). The highest acetate in the propionate ration was observed after 12 h of SC treatment and the lowest with FSCS 3% treatment after 24 h. Methane ($CH_4$) emulsion was lower with A. princeps Pampanini cv. Sajabal and spent coffee grounds treatments than with the control, SC, and FSC treatments. These experiments were designed to replace the by-products of dairy cow TMR with SC, FSC, FSCS, and FSCC to improve TMR quality. Condensed tannins contained in FSCS and FSCC treatments, which reduced $CH_4$ emulsion in vitro, decreased rumen microbial fermentation during the early incubation time. Therefore, future experiments are required to develop a rumen continuous culture system and an in vivo test to optimize the percentages of FSC, FSCS, and FSCC in the TMR diet of the dairy cows.
The researchers have tried to reduce ruminal methane gas ($CH_4$) and to convert it into beneficial nutrient for several decades. This study was conducted to screen the methane-reducing vegetables among lettuce, hot pepper, spring onion, onion, turmeric, sesame leaf, garlic, radish sprout, leek and ginger nutritiously on the in vitro ruminal fermentation. The heat-treated vegetables at the 10% of substrate (timothy) were used to reduce methane production on the in vitro anaerobic experiment of 0, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h incubation time. Total gas production, pH, ammonia, $H_2$, $CO_2$, $CH_4$, and volatile fatty acid (VFA) were measured as indicators of in vitro fermentation product containing methane gas. All treatments except garlic showed a tendency to increase in total gas production. The result of ammonia showed that garlic and hot pepper affected rumen bacteria concerned protein metabolism and that lettuce and spring onion increased ammonia production. Garlic decreased $CH_4$ production in inverse proportion to $H_2$. Lettuce, spring onion, onion, garlic, radish sprout, leek and ginger increased propionate of VFA. Garlic balanced the ruminal fermentation in the pH, $H_2$, $CH_4$, acetate and propionate. This results showed that methane production at in vitro study was inhibited by heat-treated garlic supplementation. In conclusion, this study suggests that ruminal fermentation covering methane production might be controled by proper vegetables.

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of yeast culture on the performance of broiler chicks and noxious gas emission in broiler houses. Two hundred forty and three hundred and twenty, one day old Cobb male broiler chicks in Expt 1 and Expt 2, respectively were alloted to four treatment levels of yeast culture (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4%). To each treatment, 60 birds were assigned in Expt 1 and 5 replicates of 16 birds each were assigned in Expt 2. Basal diets contained 21.5% and 19.0% CP, and 3,100kcal/kg ME for the starting and finishing periods, respectively. Ammonia and $CO_2$ gas emission were detected twice a day for seven days during the five week period of Expt 1. Weight gain, feed intake and feed efficiency were measured for five weeks in Expt 2. Intestinal microbes, blood cholesterol and ND antibody titer were examined at the end of Expt 2. In Expt 1, the concentration of $NH_3$ in the house of birds fed yeast culture tended to be lower than the control. It was significantly lower in the 0.4% yeast culture treatment than the control (P<0.05). $CO_2$ concentration was significantly lower in all yeast culture treatments regardless of its dietary supplemental level than the control (P<0.05). different from others. Feed efficiency (feed/gain), however, was significantly improved in all yeast culture treatments relative to that of the control for starting period (P<0.05) and that of 0.2% yeast culture treatment was significantly lower than those of the control and 0.4% for the overall period. Total number of E. coli in the ileum of birds fed yeast culture at 0.1 and 0.2% was significantly lower than those of the control and 0.4% in the ileum. The CFU of Lactobacillus spp. of birds fed yeast culture at 0.1% was higher in the cecum compared to other treatments (P<0.05). Total cholesterol level of chicks fed 0.1% yeast culture seemed to be lower compared to that of other treatments, whereas LDL-cholesterol level was significantly lower than those of the control and 0.4% treatment. ND antibody titer tended to be higher in the yeast culture treatments than the control, but was not significantly different. The results of these experiments indicated that 0.2% yeast culture may have a potential to reduce the noxious gas emission in broiler houses and maximize the performance of broiler chicks.
