  • The bivalve molluscan fauna of Ulsan Bay, East Sea coast of Korea, is summarized, based on original and literature data. The fauna consists of 61 species belonging to 20 families. Seven species are identified only to genus level. Two species (Carditellopsis toneana (Yokoyama, 1922), Carditidae and Fulvia hungerfordi (G.B. Sowerby III, 1901), Cardiidae) are new records for the East Sea coast of Korea, and one species (Crenella decussata (Montagu, 1808), Mytilidae) is a new record for Korea. Biogeographically, Ulsan Bay's bivalve fauna is subtropical with a predominance of tropical-subtropical species, 21 species, or 39% of the total species number, subtropical, 14 species, or 26%, and subtropical-boreal (mostly subtropical-lowboreal), 11 species, 21%, totalling 86%. A remarkable feature of the Ulsan Bay fauna is the presence of tropical-subtropical species not found in Yeongil Bay but common in tidal flats and shallow waters of the Yellow Sea and the southern part of Korea. A cold water mass appearing off the southeast coast of Korea near Ulsan in summer seems responsible for the presence of boreal-arctic species in this area.

  • In 2021, during a survey of cnidarian fauna around Geomundo located in the Dadohaehaesang National Park in the South Sea, complete pinnated hydroid colonies attaching on vertical rocky surface at depth of 45 m were collected by SCUBA diving. Through taxonomic examination, unrecorded species, Sertularella acutidentata Billard, 1919, is newly added to the hydrozoan fauna of Korea. Recently, taxonomic position of the genus Sertularella has been relocated into the new family Sertularellidae Maronna et al., 2016 and six species from Korean waters have been synonymized or transferred to new genera. Thus, a total of 17 species belonging to genus Sertularella, including the species reported in this study, have been reported in Korean waters so far.

  • In 2005, we reported the infection status of 438 stray cats with various species of intestinal helminths, including nematodes (4 species), trematodes (23 species), and cestodes (5 species) in the Republic of Korea. However, morphologic details of each helminth species have not been provided. In the present study, we intended to describe morphologic details of 13 trematode species which were either new fauna of cats (10 species) or new fauna of not only cats but also all animal hosts (3 species). The worms were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin under a cover slip pressure, stained with Semichon's acetocarmine, and then observed using a light microscope equipped with a micrometer. The 13 subjected species included members of the Heterophyidae (Stellantchasmus falcatus, Stictodora fuscata, Stictodora lari, Centrocestus armatus, Procerovum varium, and Cryptocotyle concava), Echinostomatidae (Echinostoma hortense, Echinostoma revolutum, Echinochasmus japonicus, and Stephanoprora sp.), Diplostomidae (Neodiplostomum seoulense), Plagiorchiidae (Plagiorchis muris), and Dicrocoeliidae (Eurytrema pancreaticum). By the present study, Cryptocotyle sp. and Neodiplostomum sp. recored in our previous study were identified as C. concava and N. seoulense, respectively. Three species, P. varium, C. concava, and Stephanoprora sp., are new trematode fauna in Korea.

  • A taxonomic study of the family Electridae Stach, 1937 (Bryozoa: Cheilostomatida) was carried out using materials collected from six localities of Korea from 1984 to 2021. Aspidelectra melolontha (Landsborough, 1852) is newly added to the bryozoan fauna of Korea, and Electra jindoica n. sp. is new to science. European A. melolontha is known to occur in brackish water of low salinity, but the species is found in New Zealand and Argentina seawater. This species is also reported as a fouling bryozoan from China and New Zealand. Electra jindoica n. sp. is distinguished by smaller zooid, larger kenozooid, and developed cryptocyst from E. asiatica Grischenko, Dick and Mawatari, 2007. With the addition of two species reported herein, six species and four genera of Electridae from Korea have been recorded: Aspidelectra melolontha, Arbopercula tenella, Conopeum hexagonum, C. reticulum, C. seurati, and Electra jindoica n. sp. Furthermore, the genera Aspidelectra and Electra are new to the Korean bryozoan fauna based on this study.
