  • The purpose of this study was to compare the quality of life in low vision to the one in normals. 20 multifactorial patients in low vision and 20 age-matched healthy normals took part in the survey and were orally estimated using NEI VFQ-25. The age of participants ranged 25 to 78. The mean score in low vision subjects was 55.88$\pm$14.76, whereas the one in normal subjects was 94.47$\pm$3.78. The age of low vision subject was highly correlated with the item Near Activities(r=-0.584), their LogMAR was fairly good correlated with the item Peripheral Vision(r=0.527). The quality of life in low vision is considerably depressed comparing to normals. Is there the nystagmus in low vision patient, it is inferred that the quality of life considerably leads to the problem.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess vision-related quality of life and modes of refractive error correction. We administered NEI-VFQ (National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire) to 137 subjects in two modes of refractive error correction: spectacles and contact lens wearers. The NEL-VFQ was developed to assess vision-related quality of life with respect to 1) visual symptoms 2) social function as well as difficulty with tasks and symptoms 3) economic issues and health concerns 4) psychological well-being. The NEL-VFQ was translated from English into Korean. Methods: All data were analyzed using SAS 8.0. Student's T-test was conducted to determine significant differences in each of the subscale (${\alpha}=0.05$). Result: The Peripheral Vision subscale score ($mean{\pm}SD$) was $52.2{\pm}32.7$ for the spectacle wearers, $88.6{\pm}18.1$ for contact lens wearers; the spectacle wearers' Peripheral Vision score was significantly lower than contact lens wearers (p=0.0001). There were also significant differences between two groups detected in Color Vision (p=0.001), General Vision (p=0.01) and Health Perception (p=0.01). Conclusion: Contact lens wearers and spectacle wearers were mostly high vision-related quality of life except General Vision and Health Perception. Especially, contact lens wearers were higher vision-related quality of life than spectacle wearers. Further studies on developing of good quality of contact lens will be needed to improve quality of life in ametropia.

  • The purpose of this study is descriptive survey to quality of life by dry eyes experience in university students. The Korean version of the National eye institute visual functioning questionnaire (NEI-VFQ) was used to evaluate the quality of life. As a result of the study, 18.4% of the participants were diagnosed with dry eyes, and 63.2% experienced subjective dry eyes experience. The findings showed that the factors influencing the visual quality of life was wearing glasses, and the explanatory power for this 13.6%. Further research is needed considering the length of wearing glasses, contact lenses and severity of dry eyes.

  • Purpose: This study aims to examine the effects of auriculotherapy on reducing signs of dry eye syndrome. Methods: This study is based on a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design. The participants who scored higher than 13 on the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) were divided randomly into two groups, the experimental group (n=45) and the control group (n=44). Auriculotherapy was performed by researchers for 2 weeks. For the experimental group, seed stickers were applied to the eye, liver, shenmen, and tubercle point of their ears. The pretest and the posttest included the same questionnaires of the OSDI as well as the Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ25) and the eye fatigue. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, $x^2$ test, t-test and paired t-test, using SAS 20.0 program. Results: The difference in the OSDI's scores showed a significant decrease between the pretest and the posttest (t=-4.12, p<.001) in the experimental group. No significant difference was found in the NEI-VFQ25 (t=-0.10, p=.921, t=-0.91 p=.374). However, the experimental group showed a significant decrease in eye fatigue (t=5.78, p<.001), whereas the control group showed no difference (t=1.38, p=.18). Conclusion: Auriculotherapy can be used effectively on relieving the symptoms of dry eye syndrome and eye fatigue. However, the quality of life related to eyes was not improved by auriculotherapy.

  • Objective : This study is to propose a new hypothesis about the interpretation of Jueyinbing in Shanghanlun by studying 2 Jueyinbing cases. Methods : We analyzed the original form of the chinese characters 'Jue(厥)', 'Jueyin(厥陰)' and 'Huoluan(?亂)' and tried to understand their contexts in Shanghanlun. At the same time, we analyzed 2 clinical cases diagnosed and treated as Jueyinbing according to newly hypothesized definition. Results : Both patients suffered from eye diseases which caused by concentrating on a sophisticated work by straining their hands, feet and chest during the night time. After the herbal intervention, their eye diseases are improved firstly. The National Eye Institute 25-item Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ) score increased on both patients. Not only all the patients' chief complaints relieved but their other clinical problems such as limb pain, hand tremble also improved. Conclusions : These results highly insist that, at least in 15 characters provision of Shanghanlun, Jueyinbing had had the different usage from the conventional terminology, and it is assumed that Jueyinbing means the disease made by concentrating on a sophisticated work by straining hands, feet and chest during night time.
