  • In order to investigate the basic vegetation information for the efficient management of the Sorbus commixta habitat in Korea, 31 plots in Mt. Chiri area were selected of which vegetation types were classified in phytosociological method and ecological characteristics were identified. As a result, the habitat was classified as S. commixta community group which was then subdivided to Prunus padus group and Picea jezoensis group. Prunus padus group was classified in Ainsliaea acerifolia subgroup and Magnolia sieboldii subgroup, while the Picea jezoensis group was classified in Rhododendron mucronulatum subgroup and Echinopanax horridum subgroup. Thus, the forest vegetation of S. commixta was classified in 1 community, 2 groups and 4 subgroups, and found to have 4 vegetation units in total.

  • This study evaluated the effects of fibers on the void ratio, compressive strength and repeated freezing and thawing resistance of porous vegetation concrete with binder type (non-sintering inorganic binder and blast furnace slag cement) and natural jute fiber volume fraction (0.0 %, 0.1 % and 0.2 %). The natural jute fiber volume fraction affected the void ratio, compressive strength and repeated freezing and thawing resistance. Added of natural jute fiber resulted in improved properties of the void ratio, compressive strength and freezing and thawing resistance. Also, the both compressive strength and freezing and thawing resistance increased with natural jute fiber volume fraction up to 0.1 % and then decreased with fiber volume fraction at 0.2 %.

  • In 2000 and 2018, phytosociological surveys were carried out in the forest vegetation of Mt. Yeompo, a representative isolated urban forest in Ulsan city. The trends of change in forest structure, composition, and spatial distribution were compared between years. Total percent coverage per 100 squaremeters of forest vegetation was similar, but natural vegetation showed a 9% increase. The importance of constituent species changed slightly. Specifically, Lindera erythrocarpa and Styrax japonicus showed very high growth rates of 835% and 269%, respectively. Species richness (S) and diversity (H') decreased by about 22% and 8%, respectively. Both S and H' showed slightly higher rates of decrease in artificial compared with natural vegetation. The constituent species life form spectrums were the same in 2000 and 2018 as 'MM-R5-D4-e'. The similarity (Jaccard coefficient) in the species composition of the forest vegetation was almost homogeneous at approximately 75%. The number of indicator species decreased from 16 species in 2000 to 7 species in 2018. This decrease was mostly due to a decline in herbaceous plants, such as Hemicryptophytes, Geophytes, and Therophytes, which are sensitive to disturbances. The spatial distribution of forest vegetation did not change significantly. The number of forest landscape elements (patches) increased by approximately 25% from 537 in 2000 to 721 in 2018, while the average size decreased by about 20% from 1.28 ha in 2000 to 1.03 ha in 2018.

  • Changes in the interactions among incident ocean water waves, coastal debris (marine debris), and the back vegetation zone line on a natural sandy beach on the island of Jinu-do in the Nakdong river estuary were investigated. The study involved a cross-sectional field survey of the beach, numerical modeling of incident ocean water waves, field observations of the distribution of coastal debris, and vegetation zone line tracking using GPS. The conclusions of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) The ground level of the swash zone (sandy beach) on Jinu-do is rising, and the vegetation zone line, which is the boundary of the coastal sand dunes, shows a tendency to move forward toward the open sea. The vegetation zone line is developing particularly strongly in the offshore direction in areas where the ground level is elevated by more than 1.5 m. (2) The spatial distributions of incident waves differed due to variations in the water depth at the front of the beach, and the wave run-up in the swash zone also displayed complex spatial variations. With a large wave run-up, coastal debris may reach the vegetation zone line, but if the run-up is smaller, coastal debris is more likely to deposit in the form of an independent island on the beach. The deposited coastal debris can then become a factor determining which vegetation zone line advances or retreats. Finally, based on the results of this investigation, a schematic concept of the mechanisms of interaction between the coastal debris and the coastal vegetation zone line due to wave action was derived.

  • The development of drought index that provides detailed-spatial-resolution drought information is essential for improving drought planning and preparedness. The objective of this study was to develop the concept of using satellite-based hybrid drought index called the Vegetation Drought Response Index in South Korea (VegDRI-SKorea) that could improve spatial resolution for monitoring local and regional drought. The VegDRI-SKorea was developed using the Classification And Regression Trees (CART) algorithm based on remote sensing data such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from MODIS satellite images, climate drought indices such as Self Calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (SC-PDSI) and Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), and the biophysical data such as land cover, eco region, and soil available water capacity. A case study has been done for the 2012 drought to evaluate the VegDRI-SKorea model for South Korea. The VegDRI-SKorea represented the drought areas from the end of May and to the severe drought at the end of June. Results show that the integration of satellite imageries and various associated data allows us to get improved both spatially and temporally drought information using a data mining technique and get better understanding of drought condition. In addition, VegDRI-SKorea is expected to contribute to monitor the current drought condition for evaluating local and regional drought risk assessment and assisting drought-related decision making.

  • The marsh vegetation in the vicinity of Tumunsan, Tokyusan National Park, Chollapuk-do, Korea was analysed in order to find out the vegetational characteristics. The total number of vascular plants surveyed were summarized as 39 familieis, 77 genera, 74 species, 18 varieties and 1 form. The ten species such as Juncus effusus var. decipiens, Carex leiorhyncha, Lysimachia vulgaris var. davurica, Sirpus triqueter, Scirpus karuizawensis, Caltha palustris var. membranacea, Carex doniana, Carex humilis, Vicia venosa, and Disporum smilacinum showed the Importance Value more than 10 % in herbaceous marsh vegetation. The species such as Heloniopsis orientalis, Astilbe chinensis var. davidii, Trignotis peduncularis, Lycopus ramosissimus var. japonicus, Iris nertschinskia and Hosta capitata were distributed at very limited or wide spread localities in the marsh. The marsh vegetation in this area is one of the rare and very distinct natural resources in Tokyusan National Park and the proper Action Plan of Management is strongly needed because the projected developing works in this site will act seriously in marsh vegetational changes in the future.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic information on ecological forest management in Janggunbong, Bonghwa-Gun. Vegetation data were collected from Janggunbong, Bonghwa-Gun, from July, 2014 to October, 2015. We carried out an analysis of vegetation types on the physiognomically dominant species of 111 quadrates. In the natural forest area, the vegetation community was classified into Quercus mongolica, Betula schmidtii, Pinus densiflora, Quercus variabilis and Tilia amurensis. In the plantation area, the vegetation community was classified into Pinus koraiensis, Larix kaempferi, Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Betula platyphylla var. japonica. Based on the analysis of the importance value of the species in the slope area, it was seen that the tree layers of the natural forest were dominated by Quercus mongolica at 44.3, and Pinus densiflora at 12.1. The importance values of the subtree layer of the natural forest were found to be 27.6 for Quercus mongolica, and 12.4 for Fraxinus sieboldiana. Also, the importance values of the tree layers in the plantation areas were found to be 22.6 for Pinus koraiensis, 15.4 for Larix kaempferi, and 13.3 for Fraxinus rhynchophylla, while those of the subtree layers of the plantation area were found to be17.9 for Quercus variabilis, 14.1 for Parthenocissus tricuspidata, and 10.4 for Quercus mongolica in that order. Vine plants showed higher importance values in the plantation area than in the natural forest area. Species diversity in the valley area was 2.334 in the natural forest area, and 1.734 in the plantation area. That of natural forest area was 1.931, and that of plantation area was 1.927 in slope area. For management of the forest vegetation in Mt. Janggunbong, a distinct forest management plan, customized for each topography and physiognomical community unit should be made Particularly, the administration is required to consider strategies to reduce the higher importance value for vine plants in the plantation areas.
