Nonlinear flow characteristics of a hydrofoil running under the free surface are investigated based on potential flow theory using singularity distribution techniques. Following Hess & Smith's method[12], sources and vortices are distributed on the surface of the foil and Rankine sources are distributed at a distance above the undisturbed free surface to solve the nonlinear free surface waves(so called Raised Panel Method). Using the linearized Neumann-Kelvin solution, the conversed solutions which rigidly satisfy the nonlinear free surface condition is obtained through an iterative technique. It is validated that the nonlinear solutions are compared with Duncan's experimental results(NACA 0012, $\alpha=5^{\circ}$), showing good correlations with each other. At a very shallow submergence and a very high speed the converged solutions are obtained. As the speed increases higher, it is shown that the difference between the nonlinear and linear solutions are trivial. Finally, the effects of the camber and thickness on the nonlinear flow characteristics of the foil are investigated.

An experimental study was carried out to examine the behavior of the unsteady boundary layer. An NACA 0012 airfoil with aspect ratio of 2.7 was set vertically in a test section, which is sinusoidally pitched about the quarter chord. The oscillating amplitude is from -6$^{\circ}$ to +6$^{\circ}$ and the mean angle of attack is 0$^{\circ}$. Surface mounted probes (Glue-on probes) were employed to measure the surface flow of the boundary layer. Measurements were made at free-stream velocities of 1.98, 2.83, and 4.03m/s, and the corresponding Reynolds numbers based on the chord length were 2.3$\times$104, 3.3$\times$104 and 4.8$\times$104, respectively. The reduced frequency is fixed as 0.1 in all cases. The results show that the surface position of minimum shear stress and of boundary layer break-down can be discerned in the Reynolds number between 2.3$\times$104 and 3.3$\times$104.

The present study was conducted by using fast-responding PSP technique to measure the surface pressure on a small-scale rotor blade in hover. Also, the study was performed to verify the accuracy and investigate its possibility of PSP application for rotor blade pressure measurement. Pulsed laser which has 532 nm wavelength was used as a light source. Lifetime measurement technique was applied. Also, the coated paint on a rotor blade was porous PSP which has faster response time than conventional PSP. The blades had NACA0012 airfoils. The length of rotor blade was 340 mm and chord was 40 mm with rectangular shape 1 set, and 4 sets had several tip sweepback angles. The measured results qualitatively showed that the upper surface pressure decreases with increasing the collective pitch angle. Quantitative pressure coefficients of PSP results were higher approximately 0.4 to 0.7 than the pressure tap data of the NASA experiment.

In this study, stability analysis of boundary layers on airfoils is performed by using parabolized stability equations(PSE). Boundary layer edge conditions are obtained by compressible inviscid flow calculations. Mean velocity and temperature profiles of the laminar boundary layer are obtained by solving compressible boundary layer equations in generalized curvilinear coordinates with fourth order accuracy in the wall normal direction. Laminar mean flow profiles are used as input data for PSE to investigate growth rates of disturbances and stability characteristics. For the cases of boundary layer on NACA0012 and HSNLF(1)-0213 airfoils at Mach number 0.5, growth rates with respect to disturbance frequencies and profiles of disturbance amplitude are investigated. The effect of angle of attack on stability characteristics are examined at both upper and lower surfaces. The neutral stability curves, effect of Mach number and effect of airfoil section shapes are also analyzed.

The purpose of present study is to investigate the surface roughness on tip-vortex cavitation and its induced noise, emanating from an elliptic wing of NACA 0012 section. Roughness elements of $200{\mu}m$ are applied to the 10% portion of wing tip, and then, the wing tip as well as the leading edge. It is shown from cavitation observation that the cavitation inception is first visible at about half chord downstream of wing tip for most experimental conditions, and developed into the tip-vortex cavitation and finally the fully developed cavitation as cavitation number is decreased. Acoustic noise generated by a tip-vortex cavitation has its frequency range of 3 kHz to 50 kHz, while the fully-developed cavitation at lower cavitation number induces a broad band spectrum. It is also shown that, when the roughness elements are applied to the wing tip and the leading edge, the cavitation characteristics and its induced noise are improved. Moreover, it is appeared that the condition at which the rough surface is at pressure side gives a better result. although its lift-drag ratio is reduced.
In the present study, the effect of pitch amplitude on the unsteady aerodynamics of a NACA 0012 airfoil is numerically investigated. When the frequency ratio is equal to 1.0, airfoil pitching with 20 and 30 degrees of pitch amplitude shows almost small lift generation, but the lift is significantly increased in case of 10-degree pitch amplitude. When the frequency is 0.5, the lift coefficients have large values, and the lift increases with a decrease in pitch amplitude. When the frequency ratio is 1.0, the airfoil generates large thrust. The thrust decreases as the pitch amplitude decreases. When the frequency ratio is 0.5, drag is generated for the 30-degree pitch amplitude, but the thrust is generated for 10-degree pitch amplitude. In future, the effect of heave amplitude on the unsteady aerodynamics of the airfoil will be studied.

An experimental study has been carried out at circulating water channel to investigate the viscous flow around breaking waves generated by a submerged hydrofoil(NACA0012). Detailed flow measurements were made at several critical points including an incipient wave-breaking point and a fully-developed wave breaker. Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) was employed to visualize the flow field very close to the breaker as well as at the near- and far-wake of the breaker. Generation, development and decay of the wave breaker have been investigated. It is found that PIV technique could be well applied to the complex flow field, including the vortical structures near the free surface as well as the wake of the hydrofoil.

This paper contains a new approach to blade section design method for marine propellers. The hydrodynamic characteristics of 2-D section are highly influenced by its geometrical parameters i.e., thickness and camber distributions and leading edge radius etc. To consider fully turbulent flow field near 2-D section. the finite volume method with k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulent model which solve Reynolds time averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equation is applied. In this study, O-type grid system that can provide many calculation points on blade surface is used. The results were compared with those of the experiment of NACA0012 to confirm the accuracy of the developed codes. The goal of this study is the development of a blade section with high efficiency and low drag. To achieve this, we carried out the tests of lift, drag and cavitation characteristics in cavitation tunnel. The results of experiment were compared with numerical results in order to validate the proposed blades design method. By comparing the numerical results with the experiments, we found that the new blade section, KH28 allows superior performance in efficiency and cavitation avoidance characteristics. We further investigated the blade section design method and an application study of this section, KH28 to apply to the marine propeller. In order to improve the accuracy of numerical results on prediction of lift and drag, we conclude here that the 2-layer boundary model must be used.
This study aims the observation of wing-in-ground effect near free surface. Numerical computations are carried out to observe the deformation of free surface and the effects on lift and drag. The detailed flow fields around two- and three-dimensional wings with NACA 0012 section are observed from the results of a commercial CFD program, FLUENT, and the local deformations of free surface are obtained by applying a Rankine panel method. In the present cases, the small deformation of free surface under the wings is observed, but different forces are found between solid wall and free surface when the speed of wings becomes large.
In this study, we have constructed the method of design about H-Darrieus wind turbine, a kind of VAWT(vertical axis wind turbine). The NACA 0012 airfoil is chosen for the blade, and DMS(double multiple streamtube) theory is used for the analysis. The flow field is computed with numerical solution of rotating Navier-Stokes equations. From the result of experimental data of power coefficient curves, the validity of the present research is checked. Through the non-dimensional parameter analysis for the wind turbine design, we estimated the efficiency of wind turbine with the resultant Cp's, with which an efficient design of VAWT is achieved, and aerodynamic characteristics are presented systematically.
