This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of seeding rates and nitrogen fertilization levels on the yield. carbohydrate reserves in stubble and stand reduction of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bie%r (L.) Moench) in 1983 on the Experimental Livestock Farm, College of Agriculture, Seoul National University in Suwon. The results of this experiment are summarized as follows: I. There was no significant difference in forage yield among three seeding rates(20, 40. and 80kgjha), but there was a significant difference(P <.0 I) in forage yield among three N fertilization levels(O, I 50. and 300kgjha). High nitrogen plot showed the highest dry matter yield. 2. Carbohydrate reserves were influenced not only by seeding rates, but also by nitrogen fertilization levels at first cut(P < .05). At second harvest, no treatments affect the carbohydrate reserves. 3. Only the seeding rates affect the stand reduction at first harvest. But the mortality was influenced by seeding rates and N fertilization levels(P < .05). The high seeding rates caused the high mortality. 4. According to the results obtained from this study, it is suggested that the seeding rate of 40 kgjha and nitrogen fertilization of 300kgjha would be recommendable for maximum forage yield and good performance where sorghum-sudangrass hybrids are broadcasted for summer forage production.
Investigation of nutrient movement in soil and soil water is necessary to clarify water purification functions and nutrient circulation within a forest ecosystem. In this study, seasonal changes in the nutrient content of soil and soil water was investigated in Korean white pine(Pinus koraiensis) and Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis) forest applied urea ($150kg\;ha^{-1}$). Soil pH was decreased rapidly in Japanese larch plot for a long period. On the other hand, soil pH was increased slightly in Korean white pine plot. T-C and T-N content were increased in both plots. In Japanes larch plot, exchangeable Ca and Mg contents were decreased remarkably than those in korean white pine plot while exchangeable K was increased rapidly after application. The effect of urea application on exchangeable K was not obvious compared to other cations. The pH, Ca, $NH_4-N$, $NO_3-N$, $SO_4-S$ and Cl concentrations in the sampled soil water at surface soil were increased only temporarily after fertilization, with the only exception of the decrease in pH of the soil water in Japanese larch plot. On the other hand, the peak value of K, Mg concentrations in the soil water was shown between 2 and 5 months after fertilization. The concentrations of Ca, $NO_3-N$, $SO_4-S$ and Cl returned to the values found before fertilization after about 1 month. Those of K, Mg, and $NO_3-N$ after 6-12 months.
The volcanic ash soils from the Jeju province have low available phosphate because of the high phosphate fixing power of the soils. Phosphorus fertilizerwas dressed after cultivating green manure crops and before cultivating potatoes in order to investigate potato yields, the available phosphate contents, and phosphorus balance in the soils. Green manure crops cultivated in this study were hairy vetch alone and hairy vetch and rye. During potato cultivation, four treatments were conducted in the experiments; NF (non fertilizer), P fertilizer ($N-P-K=0-25-0kg\;10a^{-1}$), NK fertilizer ($N-P-K=18-0-19kg\;10a^{-1}$), and NPK fertilizer ($N-P-K=18-25-19kg\;10a^{-1}$). There were no differences in the yields of potato stem and tuber from the cultivation plots of different green manure crops. However, in the plots with single-sown hairy vetch and mixed-sown hairy vetch and rye, the yields of potato stem and tuber were higher in the P fertilizer plot than in NF plot. The yield of tuber among the treatments with mixed-sown hairy vetch and rye was the highest in the NPK fertilizer plot. The available phosphate content in soils initially increased with time in all plots, but began to decrease gradually after Oct. 18. The available phosphate contents were high in the plots for phosphate fertilization, and the difference in available phosphate content between non-phosphorus fertilizer plots and phosphorus fertilizer plots increased with time. In the single-sown hairy vetch and mixed-sown hairy vetch and rye plot, the phosphorus balances in NF plot and NK fertilizer plot were very low, while those in the P fertilizer plot and NPK fertilizer plot were high. In conclusion, available phosphate contents in soil and the potato yields were increased by phosphorus fertilization when potatoes planted after cultivating hairy vetch and rye together, compared to hairy vetch alone.

The objective of this study was to compare concentrations of nutrients such as total nitrogen (TN), nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3$-N) total phosphorous (TP), and phosphate phosphorous ($PO_4$-P) in groundwater under paddy and upland fields, and surface water recharging from a rural mixed land-use watershed. Chinese cabbage and hot pepper were cultivated on the upland field plot. The TN concentrations in upland groundwater showed double peaks (4.7, 4.3 mg/L, respectively) in April 2009 shortly after fertilizer application, indicating that TN concentrations are greatly influenced by fertilization. However, the TN concentrations in paddy groundwater were always lower than 2.0 mg/L irrespective of fertilization. Whereas the mean concentrations of TN and $NO_3$-N in upland groundwater significantly (p<0.05) higher than those in surface water, the mean concentrations of TP and $PO_4$-P in upland groundwater were significantly lower than those in surface water. On the other hand, the mean concentrations of TN, $NO_3$-N, TP and $PO_4$-P in paddy groudwater were significantly (p<0.05) lower than those in surface water. The TN concentrations in upland groundwater were generally higher than those in surface water during early April to early December due to the effect of fertilization, but vice versa in the other periods. In contrast, the TP concentrations in upland groundwater were always lower than those in surface water due to the sorption of inorganic phosphorous by soil. Moreover, the TN and TP concentrations in paddy groundwater were always lower than those in surface water, and therefore paddy groundwater may dilute nutrient concentrations in surface water when paddy groundwater and surface water mix.
This experiment was to evaluate lodging characteristics of 35 recommended rice varieties of Kyonggi-do at normal (110 kg N/ha) and hen (220 kg N/ha) nitrogen application rates during 1999 to 2000. At heavy N fertilization rate, varieties that were highly resistant to lodging were Obongbyeo, Daejinbyeo, Naepoongbyeo, Nonganbyeo and Ilpumbyeo. Fourteen varieties including Daeanbyeo were moderately resistant and 11 varieties including Jinbubyeo were susceptible to lodging. The lodging-related characters which showed the highest effect on lodging at lodging degree of 9 were culm length and height of center gravity, culm length at lodging degree of 5, and culm length and the third internode length at lodging degree of 3 or below. The difference in rice yield between normal and heavy nitrogen fertilization rate was within 5% in early-maturing varieties but there was great yield difference in mid- and late-maturing varieties depending on the degree of lodging. Consequently, stable rice yield could be obtained by selecting lodging-resistant varieties and lowering fertilization rate, specially in the paddy field where lodging occurrence is common.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of long-term fertilization on the yield and quality of soybean. The yield of soybean was highest in the NPK+lime $1.5Mg\;ha^{-1}$ treatment. Carbohydrate content of soybean was high in the non-fertilizer treatment and crude protein content was high in the NPK+lime $1.5Mg\;ha^{-1}$ and NPK+silicate $1.5Mg\;ha^{-1}$ treatment, and crude lipid and ash content was high in the NPK+silicate $1.5Mg\;ha^{-1}$ treatment. The content of inorganic compounds were not different among treatments. Correlation between $P_2O_5$/T-N and carbohydrate, crude lipid was $-0.99^{**}$, $-0.94^{**}$ respectively. Correlation between Mn and carbohydrate was $0.95^*$, but others were not significantly different. Yield of soybean increased with lime application and protein content increased with silicate application.
Experiments were carried out to find out varietal differences in vascular bundles and air spaces in the internodes, in relation to ear characteristics using plant samples from various N levels. The number and size of large vascular bundles in the internodes increased by increasing N fertilization, especially in the 1st internodes for the numbers, and 3rd, 4th, and 5th internodes for the size. Comparing the varieties, indica/japonica cross-bred varieties had more and larger vascular bundles than japonica varieties. The number of air spaces also increased by the increase of N fertilization. Comparing the varieties, Pungsanbyeo and Chucheongbyeo had more air spaces than Yushin and Jinheung in 3rd or upper internodes. The number and size of vascular bundles and the thickness of internodes had significant correlation with the panicle length, number of primary and secondary branches and number of spikelets per panicle.

In this study, the adequate cutting frequency and level of cattle slurry nitrogen application were investigated for the production of Reed canarygrass. Higher relative dry matter yields were recorded in 2nd cut in 3 cutting frequency, 3rd cut in 4 cutting frequency and 4th cut in 5 cutting frequency respectively. With no fertilization, mean dry matter yields per year were 6.4~7.5 tons/ha and the highest yield appeared in 3 cutting frequency. The increased application of cattle slurry nitrogen resulted in the increased dry matter yield. Significantly higher dry matter yields than that of no fertilization were recorded in fertilization of 180 kg cattle slurry-N per year in 3 cutting frequency, 120 kg in 4 cutting frequency and 300 kg in 5 cutting frequency respectively. Efficiency of dry matter production with cattle slurry nitrogen application (kg DM/kg N) was higher in 120 kg N, 30 kg N and 90 kg N/ha/cut in 3, 4 and 5 cutting frequency respectively. In each cutting frequency, the higher efficiency of dry matter production appeared in 1st cut in 3 cutting frequency, and 2nd cut in 4 and 5 cutting frequency respectively. Economic slurry N level (kg/ha) was 462.7~525.3 kg/ha in 3 cutting frequency, and 353.1~423.2 kg/ha and 380.1~424.4 kg/ha in 4 and 5 cutting frequency respectively.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of several organic fertilizers on the growth and root yield of Liriope platyphylla was planted 30 cm ${\time}$ 10 cm in field from 1998 to 1999. Six treatments of organic fertilizers applied : N.P.K, NPKC (N,P,K+Compost), NPKCO (N.P.K+Compost+Oilcake),NPKCOF (N.P.K+Compost+Oilcake+Fowldropping), NPKCOFP (N.P.K+Compost+ Oilcake+Fowldropping+plant ash), CO (Compost+Oilcake), COF (Compost+Oilcake+fowldropping). Organic matter, available phosphate, and MgO are NaO of soil increased in all of plots with the addition of organic fertilizers. The leaf length, number of leaves and of tillers were increased by the use of organic fertilizers compared to N.P.K fertilizers compared with N.P.K fertilization. The number of tubers were increased by using the organic fertilization N.P.K fertilization and showed higher in the soil depth of 0${\sim}$20 cm. The dry root yield was showed higher in organic fertilizers than in N.P.K fertilizer and highest dry root yield resulted from NPKOF 39% and NPKCOFP 49%.
