In this study, we investigated the buffering effect with different COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and TP shock loads on the performance of lab-scale Sequencing Batch Reactor(SBR) using synthetic wastewater. This study was operated under the following conditions : HRT, 12 hrs : MLSS, 2,000 mg/L : F/M ratio, $0.2kgCOD/kgMLSS{\cdot}d$ : SRT, 20days, and was increased by a factor, COD : ranging from 200-2000 mg/L, $NH_4{^+}-N$ : ranging from 30-300 mg/L, T-P : ranging from 5-50 mg/L in the reactor. As results, COD removal rate at different shock loads was decreased until 42.1%(stable state : 95%) and concentration with effluent was higher than 695 mg/L(at Run 6). In case of $NH_4{^+}-N$ removal rate was decreased until 35.8% from 97.0% and also T-P removal rate was decreased until 5.0%. Effluent concentrations of COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and T-P were rapidly increased according to shock loads and needed 3, 4 and 6 additional cycle times for recovering the stable condition.
The treatment of the washout from small scale incinerator was performed physically, chemically and biologically. The results are as follows. 1. SS, FS removal efficiency of washout wastewater from incinerator was 67.4%, 37.4%, while SS, FS of sewage wastewater was removed 63.2% 35.4% respectively. 2. The optimal conditions for chemical coagulation turned out to be pH 7.5, alum(Al2O3 10%) 30ml/ι and polyelectrolyte(A-601P 0.1%) 4ml/ι. SS 86%, FS 89.5%, BOD 42.5% and CODMn, 63.5% was removed and the removal efficiency of some metals are shown as Pb 93.5%, Zn 86.5% and Fe 80.6%. The concentration of the effluent was SS 9mg/ι, BOD 98.4mg/ι, and CODMn 138.4mg/ι. 3. The removal efficiency in treating washout wastewater of incinerator through HBC-briquet media was getting higher with increasing HRT, and mixed wastewater with 1:1, 1:2 ratio could be met up to the standard limit with higher HRT than 12hr. Under the condition of 1:2 mix ratio and HRT 24 hr, removal efficiency of SS, BOD, CODMn, T-N and T-P was 92.1%, 90%, 87%, 48.2% and 48%, respectively, and the concentration of treated wastewater was SS 2.9 mg/ι, BOD 10.3mg/ι, CODMn 14.1mg/ι, T-N 11.6 mg/ι and T-P 1.3 mg/ι, respectively.
Organic carbons such as methanol, ethanol, iso-propanol, methoxy ethanol, glucose are added(1, 2, 3%) in the 2000 ppm $NH_3$ and $H_3PO_4$. As vol.%. cyclic voltammetry measurement of the capacity with the addition of organic carbon, the results of $NH_3$ + 3 vol.% Methanol Addition, $H_3PO_4$ + 2 vol.% iso-propanol addition of the increase in capacity was observed. Applying to the CDI Module cell with an addiction of organic carbon is confirm that remove $NH_4$-N and $PO_4$-P in sewage. Namely, the removal efficiency of $NH_3$ was increase of 16.4% during adsorption, 30.4% during desorption and the removal efficiency of $H_3PO_4$ was increase of 63% during adsorption, 54.7% during desorption. Therefore, the result of this research is confirm that effect of the N, P removal and considered that reduction of the operating costs without removing the organic matter in the influent wastewater.
This study examined the nitrate removal efficiency which uses an electrowinning, and also analyzed the nitrate removal efficiency under a variety of operating conditions such as nitrate concentrations, pH, current densities, electrodes, reducing agents in order to determine optimal conditions. In addition, the multi-step electro-chemical process test has been also analyzed. During the electrowinning, the identical Zn-Zn and Pt-Ti electrodes in the insoluble oxidation electrode(Pt) has shown the highest nitrate removal efficiency in the 100 mg $NO_3^{-}$ -N/L concentration. In the concentration of 150 mg $NO_3^{-}$ -N/L, the efficiency of the Zn-Zn electrode were 70~85%, and that of Pt-Ti electrode were 40~50% without any change of pH. In the high concentration of 500 and 1,000 mg $NO_3^{-}$ -N/L, the higher the concentration, the more decrease of its nitrate removal efficiency decreased. However, the energy consumed for nitrogen removal increased when the nitrate concentration was high. As a result of the multi-step electro-chemical process test, We chose the Test 4. Because the first, most of the zinc consumed from 1 step was recovered from over the 2 step. The second, amount of consumption anode decreased with insoluble anode Pt from over the 2 step. And the third, Zn cathode increased the possibility of reusing Zn deposited. In view of the results so far achieved, the multi-step electro-chemical process would be applied to treat nitrogen involved in metal finishing wastewater.
The removal of algae was conducted by loess, aluminum sulfate and PAC on a laboratory scale. The loess was consists of organic matter 1.4%, T-N $289{\mu}g/g$, T-P $17{\mu}g/g$, $Al841.2{\mu} g/g$, Fe $592.7{\mu}g/g$, Ca $10.6{\mu}g/g$, Mg $85.5{\mu}g/g$ and Mn $6.6{\mu}g/g$. Test water was dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa. When test water was mixed with 0.01, 0.05. and 0.1 g/$\ell$ of the loess in 5 minutes, after settled in 1 hour, the removal of chl-a was 2, 22, and 36% respectively. The removal of chl-a was 69%, 70% in pH 4.5 and 9.0 and above 92% between pH 5.0 and 8.0 after the $2mg/{\ell}$ of aluminum sulfate was added. When the $2mg/{\ell}$ of PAC and $0.05g/{\ell}$ of loess were added to test water together, the removal of chl-a was 95-99% in pH 4.0-8.0, 60% in pH 9.0, and 18% in pH 10.0. The removal of chl-a was higher when loess, aluminum sulfate and PAC was used together than used alone.

A method for simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphate from sewage by elemental sulfur denitrification with membrane bioreactor was proposed, and capacity $10\;m^3$/day of pilot plant was operated for 350 days. This study was investigated to have the effect of denitrification rate and T-P removal with the addition of Alum in Sulfur denitrification Reactor (SDR). The addition of Alum and alkalinity ($NaHCO_3$) in the effluent of MBR was tried to remove simultaneous phosphate and nitrogen in SDR. Characteristics of total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphate (T-P) removal was compared without and with the addition of Alum as a coagulant. T-N removal without and with the addition of Alum was 92.1% and 87.8%, respectively. And denitrification efficiency was 93.8% and 87.1%, respectively. T-P removal rate was increased to 75.6% in SDR by addition of Alum (2.6~4 mg/L as Al), but T-P removal rate was about 26.7% without the addition of Alum. Therefore, denitrification rate was 6.7% of reduction but T-P removal rate was increased by addition of Alum.

Due to the low C/N ratio of domestic wastewater characteristic, addition of external carbon source for the effective N and P removal is necessary. High organic content of food waste can be used for the external carbon source in biological nutrient removal processes, The applicability of condensate of food waste (CFW), which is produced during the high-rate fermentation process, was examined in membrane bioreactor for the nutrient removal. Under the various operating conditions, nutrient removal efficiencies and membrane fouling characteristics were evaluated using synthetic wastewater. From nitrate utilization rate (NUR) test, denitrification rate was 0.19 g $NO_3-N/g$ VSS/day. With the addition of CFW increased, average removal efficiencies of T-N and T-P could be increased up to 64% and 41%, respectively. Also the optimal retention time was 3 hr/5 hr for anoxic/aerobic reactor. When applied to real sewage, membrane fouling resistance was increased up to 60%, which could be reduced from $10.4{\times}10^{12}m^{-1}$ to $5.9{\times}10^{12}m^{-1}$ with the control of influent suspended solid concentration. In summary, it was suggested that CFW could be used as an economical and effective carbon source for membrane assisted biological N and P removal.
Reductive degradation of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) by nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) was investigated to evaluate the feasibility of using it for in-situ groundwater remediation. Batch experiments were conducted to quantify the kinetics and efficiency of RDX removal by nZVI, and to determine the effects of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and ionic strength on this process. Experimental results showed that the reduction of RDX by nZVI followed pseudo-first order kinetics with the observed rate constant (kobs) in the range of 0.0056-0.0192 min−1. Column tests were conducted to quantify the removal of RDX by nZVI under real groundwater conditions and evaluate the potential efficacy of nZVI for this purpose in real conditions. In column experiment, RDX removal capacity of nZVI was determined to be 82,500 mg/kg nZVI. pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), and DO concentration varied significantly during the column experiments; the occurrence of these changes suggests that monitoring these quantities may be useful in evaluation of the reactivity of nZVI, because the most critical mechanisms for RDX removal are based on the chemical reduction reactions. These results revealed that nZVI can significantly degrade RDX and that use of nZVI could be an effective method for in-situ remediation of RDX-contaminated groundwater.
A novel organoclay has been developed with aluminium-pillared clay modified with an amphoteric surfactant, N-Dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (DDAPS). This novel organoclay is expected to have phosphorus removal capacity as well as organic and inorganic contaminant removal capacity, due to aluminum inside the clay structure. It also exhibited less surfactant desorption than conventional cation surfactant-based organoclays. Phosphorus in water can be decreased from 0.2 mg/L to 0.0012 mg/L in 27 hours with this organoclay. Also, cadmium could removed from water using this proposed organo-clay. Experiments were performed under various pHs and amphoteric surfactants sorption capability was the highest at pH 5 when more of the amphoteric surfactant head group took on positive charges.

Abstract Spirulina platensis was grown in SWlUe waste to reduce inorganic compowlds and simultaneously produce feed resources. Spirulina platensis prefers nitrogenous compounds in Ibe order: $NH_4^{+}-N>NO_3^{-}-N>simple-N$ such as urea and simple amino acids. It even consumes $NH_4^{+}-N$ first when urea or nitrate are present. Therefore, the content of residual $NH_4^{+}-N$ in Spimlina platensis cultures can be determined by the relative extent of the following processes: (i) algal uptake and assimilation; (ii) ammonia stripping; and (iii) decomposition of urea to NH;-N by urease-positive bacteria. The removal rates of total nitrogen ffild total phosphorus were estimated as an indicator of the treatment effIciency. It was found that Spirulina platensis was able to reduce 70-93% of $P_4^{3-}-P$, 67-93% of inorganic nitrogen, 80-90% of COD, and 37-56% of organic nitrogen in various concentrations of swine waste over 12 days of batch cultivation. The removal of inorganic compounds from swine waste was mainly used for cell growth, however, the organic nitrogen removal was not related to cell growlb. A maximum cell density of 1.52 dry-g/l was maintained with a dilution rate of 0.2l/day in continuous cultivation by adding 30% swine waste. The nitrogen and phosphorus removal rates were correlated to the dilution rates. Based on the amino acid profile, the quality of the proteins in the Spirulina platensis grown in the waste was the same as that in a clean culture.ulture.
