Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a hospice music therapist training program and to evaluate its effects. Methods: The educational program consisted of training on the theory of hospice and the theory and practice of hospice music therapy. The course lasted for 4 weeks, with 8 hours of training per week, and 33 music therapists completed the course. In order to assess the effectiveness of the course, participants' knowledge and confidence regarding hospice music therapy and readiness for hospice music therapy before and after education were measured. The statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 18.0 and the paired t-test was used to assess the effectiveness of the program. Results: The trainees showed significant improvements in knowledge (P<0.001) and confidence (P<0.001) in all areas of this course, as well as in readiness for hospice music therapy (P<0.001). Participants' satisfaction with the lectures was assessed using a 5-point Likert scale. The average score for all lecture areas exceeded 4 (yes), and the satisfaction level was mostly high. Students were most satisfied with the lectures on music therapy theory, followed in order by those on music therapy practice and hospice theory. Conclusion: This hospice music therapist training program is considered to be suitable because of its positive educational effects and the high satisfaction of participants with the lectures. In order to provide high-quality music therapy services to patients and their families, this training course should be regularly offered to cultivate competent music therapists, and the content of the education should be standardized and applied in various clinical settings.

It has been passed more than 50 years of the history of music therapy on school aged children since there had been enforced the 'Education for All Handicapped Children Ace' in United states 1975, which had made an important role of music therapist augmented. In the case of South Korea, through reforming the law on March 2005 that therapist educator has to be allocated on the special class in general school, at least, patrol teacher is charged on that, which made possible to start music therapy as initial stage was realized in realistic way on the spot of school. This research has primary concerns as following. The one thing is intended that figuring the opinions of special educators and music therapists involved with the music therapy in elementary school. And the other thing is intended that making a investigation of actual condition on the spot of existing school, moreover, pinpointing at issue and suggesting the change for the better than now. In order to undertake theses intentions, I examined preceding researches and existing data, distributed the questionnaire involved the music therapy of elementary school to the people who are composed of special educators-65 persons and music therapists-30 persons from 18th October to second of November, and analyzed collected by descriptive statistics. According to the analyzed results, it says that special educator and music therapist know well about the necessity of music therapy in elementary school and its effectiveness is manifested in positive way. Moreover, in order to systemize and promote a program of music therapy, what is most urgent thing is the completion of instrument and music therapy room and there are needed strong supports at the level of nation and institution. It has become pervasive on the demand of therapy education by parents in all of the places involved with disabled children such as special school, special class, local welfare community, and early education. This research shows that how therapy and education was connected as music therapy on the spot of the elementary school, and the necessity of the education of music therapy.
The purpose of this study was to identify current trends in music therapy literature in Korea in order to provide the groundwork for future research. Therefore, 122 articles from the Korean Journal of Music Therapy (KJMT) from 1999 to 2012 and 76 articles from the Journal of Music and Human Behavior (JMHB, formerly known as Korean Journal of Music Therapy Education) from 2004 to 2012 were analyzed. Analysis was performed by identifying the frequency and percentage of the following items: type, population, topic, and methodology of published articles. In addition, the results obtained were compared and contrasted between these two publications. Overall, it was found that there was a high prevalence of descriptive studies (KJMT, 46%,; JMHB, 45%), applied research (KJMT, 51%; JMHB 66%), and quantitative studies (KJMT, 82%; JMHB 37%). In addition, ordinary people with no particular diagnosis were the most often studied population (34%). Differences were found in that a historical study was only found in KJMT whereas a philosophical study was published only in JMHB. Further analysis revealed that JMHB included a higher proportion of applied research than KJMT. In KJMT, quantitative research was appeared twice as often as qualitative and mixed-method research combined. On the other hand, a similar number of each of the three methodological types of studies appeared in JMHB. In conclusion, this study indicates that more effort should be made to increase the quantity and improve the quality of professional publications in the field of music therapy in Korea.
The purpose of this study was to explore and better understand special education music teachers' perceptions of their music curriculum. For this purpose, we conducted a focus group interview with seven special education music teachers. During the interview, four major themes and 14 sub-themes were identified. The main themes were the following: (a) types of applied activities and the goals of music classes (e.g., activities to be applied in various ways depending on the characteristics of the disability and intended outcome), (b) difficulty in implementing the music curriculum (e.g., lack of fit between textbook and students' chronological ages, lack of time and focus, self-evaluation of performance as a music teacher, (c) therapeutic experiences during music classes (e.g., expectation for positive effects through music therapy, joy of witnessing changes in students, and sense of togetherness), and (d) obstacles to the therapeutic approach of music classes and need for support (e.g., lack of professional knowledge regarding therapeutic approaches and problems with administrators and school environment). Based on these results, problems in implementing the music therapy approach as part of the music curriculum in special education schools are discussed and practical solutions for educators are offered.
Background: Music therapy is a common complementary and alternative therapy in addition to medical treatment for patients with cancer. If music therapy, which is known has a positive effect on human emotions and behaviors, is a useful additional therapy, it should be more integrated into pyscho-oncology. In this study, we aimed to determine medical oncologist attitudes to music therapy for patients with cancer and knowledge about musicology and music therapy in Turkey. Materials and Methods: This survey study included questions about participant attitudes and knowledge regarding music therapy as well as demographic characteristics. The population of the study were 402 physicians working in medical oncology in Turkey and the sample covered 112 participants in the the survey. For statistical analyses the chi-square test, Fischer exact test, and Mann-Whitney U analysis are applied. Results: In our study the rate for medical oncologists who were interested in music therapy was 28% (n=112). Some 30% (n=34) of medical oncologists recommended music therapy for their patients and 55% (n=61) recommended music therapy to prevent anxiety in patients with cancer. Conclusions: In this study, for more harmony with patients and in order to ensure management of adverse effect, it was concluded that music therapy should be regrded as an additional therapy in oncology clinics.
