The purpose of this study was to convergently investigate the perception of home-visiting music therapy services. For this, a survey was conducted on 74 persons divided into two groups, which are pre-service music therapists attending the graduate schools of music therapy and professional music therapists with certifications. As a result, first, the awareness of home-visiting music therapy service was lower than that of preexisting home-visiting services, but the necessity and expected effect were similar to them. Second, in the operational plans, there was shown a higher ratio of 40-minute services twice a week held by governmental or public organizations. Third, there were significant differences in subitems of trends and expected effects of the home-visiting music therapy service according to whether or not to hold a certification and to have experiences in providing the services. This study could be expected to provide basic data for the home-visiting music therapy being utilized as a field of music therapy. Based on the study, the establishment of practical service strategy could be suggested.
Purpose: Music therapy is a non-pharmacological treatment of the behavioral and psychological symptoms. This study was conducted to contribute to the rehabilitation of patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease in the areas of functionality, emotionality and sociability. Methods: The study included 35 participants, aged between 52 and 77 years, who were diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD) and reported suffering from depression, chronic illness anticipated stigma, and worrying about quality of life. The patients were recruited from the department of outpatient neurology at School of Medicine, D University in B Metropolitan City. Group music therapy was performed for nine weeks. The results were analyzed by repeated measures ANOVA. Results: In terms of stigma, there were significant differences between two groups and time (p<.05). Analysis of the interaction between time and service method revealed significant differences (p<.05). Between time, and the interaction between time and service method revealed significant differences in terms of quality of life (p<.05). Conclusion: The results suggest that group music therapy will be effective on the psychosocial well-being of patients with Parkinson's disease living in assisted and independent living communities.
Chronic mental-handicapped people are lacking in non-verbal expression such as eye contact, intonation, voice volume, facial expression, and gesture as well as the contents of speech, speak with a monotonous voice, fail to be vivid and clear in voice, and have absence of expression, thereby bringing about difficulty even for social adjustment and about low self-esteem. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to examine effectiveness for enhancing self-expression and self-esteem by applying music therapy to the chronic mental-handicapped. The subjects were the chronic mental-handicapped who receive rehabilitation service at the community rehabilitation center, and who have over 10 years in the duration of disease. 1he music therapy activity was progressed with totally 14 sessions during 7 weeks with twice a week. This study confirmed t-test that is verification of difference in the mean, in order to examine difference between before and after music therapy in self-expression and self-esteem of the chronic mental-handicapped, and researched into qualitative case. The findings are as follows. First, as a result of score in self-expression scale, the significant improvement was shown after music therapy compared to before music therapy. The significant difference was indicated in verbal self-expression, phonetic self-expression, and non-verbal self-expression, which are its sub-spheres. Thus, the conclusion was obtained as saying that music therapy is effective for enhancing self-expression. Second, as a result of score in self-esteem scale, the significant difference was shown after music therapy compared to before music therapy. Thus, the conclusion was obtained as saying that music therapy is effective for enhancing self-esteem. Through the above results, the music therapy showed effectiveness of self-expression ability and self-esteem in the chronic mental-handicapped at the community rehabilitation center, thereby having been confirmed to be possibly utilized as rehabilitation program for the social skill ability and the social adjustment of the chronic mental-handicapped.
The purpose of this study was to examine the use of music for job stress of employees in highway service areas and differences in use of music. For this, a survey was conducted on 150 respondents of U city and G province. The questionnaires were composed of a total of 53 questions, including use of music 25, job stress 24, and demographic characteristics 4 questions. A total of 150 questionnaires were distributed and 134 were analyzed. As a result, first, the respondents preferred listening to music over playing instruments or singing and mostly listened to popular music at home alone. Second, they reported that their purpose of use of music was for mood change followed by comfort, joy, sense of vigor, and sense of relief. Third, there were significant differences in mood of music and degree of achieving sense of relief through music. This study could provide information for organizing effective convergence music programs which could meet the needs and demands of them.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects a music group therapy program has on cognitive function and life satisfaction. We targeted the elderly who are receiving service at a daycare center. This study monitored seventeen elderly subjects who were available for language communication, walking, and defecation function even if the subject had a slight mind-body function disorder based on using the service of the daycare facilities. The subjects visited each of the welfare centers one week prior to the Korean classical music group therapy program. We conducted a pre-test of MMSE-K(Mini-Mental State Examination, Korean version) modified by Park and Gwon(1989). We also supplemented the MMSE developed by Folstein(1975) and LSI-A(Life Satisfaction Index) for the elderly developed by Neugarten, Havighurst and Tobin(1961). We conducted the Korean classical music group therapy program for 15 sessions at 50 minutes each for 1~2 times a week from July 9 to September 13, 2013 at the daycare center for OO senior welfare center. The welfare center belongs to the experimental group, excluding the OO general welfare center, which is the control group. Finally, we carried out the post-test of the MMSE-K and LSI-A in the same manner as the pre-test. We carried out the post-test on July 17, 2013, 4 days after concluding the Korean classical music group therapy program. A t-test was used in order to analyze the differences in cognitive function and life satisfaction according to each group. We used SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. This study has significance by proving that the use of Korean classical music is conducive in the improvement of cognitive function and life satisfaction of the elderly at the daycare facilities. Also, we presented the actual contents of the study to the clinical field.
The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical practice-related anxiety and coping strategies in music therapists. 81 music therapists who are members of the National Korean Music Therapist Association, completed the self-report questionnaires. Results in this study showed that the highest rating scores were found with relationship anxiety, followed by musical performance anxiety and performance anxiety. As causing factors for each anxiety type, uncooperative behaviors and attitudes of clients were reported to highly affect interpersonal anxiety; improvising music during music therapy sessions for musical performance anxiety, and observations of music therapy sessions by staff and related professionals for performance anxiety. Regarding coping strategies used by the respondents, cognitively questioning anxiety issues was most frequently used to deal with performance anxiety; actively involving in behavior modification of clients for relationship anxiety, and practicing music skills for musical performance anxiety. The results provided descriptive information of anxiety and coping strategies that music therapists experienced. Also, this study indicates how music therapists would deal with anxiety-inducing situations and develop their coping strategies for better clinical practice.
Recently, there has been a growing focus on the concerns pre-service teachers have as they move through different stages of their teacher preparation programs. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service secondary music teachers' concerns about music teaching and learning. The specific research questions were as follows: (a) What concerns are most common among participants? (b) What are differences in the concerns of pre-service secondary music teachers based on their stage of teacher preparation? (c) What are differences in the concerns of pre-service secondary music teachers based on their previous teaching experiences? A survey was distributed to pre-service secondary music teachers in a university in Seoul, and responses from a total of 93 participants were included in the final analysis. Data analysis indicated that pre-service music teachers experienced more concerns related to teaching tasks and student impact than themselves. Also, as participants progressed through their teacher preparation programs, self concerns decreased while task concerns and student impact concerns increased. Pre-service secondary music teachers who had previously taught in a school had fewer concerns than participants with no teaching experience. Suggestions for how teacher preparation programs can address the concerns of pre-service secondary music teachers are offered.
Purpose: We investigated the effects of music on pain, blood pressure, and pulse in patients with chronic back pain. We tried to find some change of satisfaction of treatment and a sense. Method: We recruited total 30 patients with chronic back pain, who had pain from lumbago for more than six months. Subjects received electrotherapy and electrotherapy with music one at a time during me test, and subjects received one in the morning and the other one in the afternoon. We compared the test results between the electrotherapy and electrotherapy with music. Visual Analogue Scale was used to check the effect on pain. Blood pressure and pulse were checked, too. The gathered informatio was analyzed by t-test, independent sample t-test, and chi-square test. Results: There was statistically not significant difference between electrotherapy and electrotherapy with the music in VAS(Visual Analogue Scale)(p>0.05). There were statistically some significant differences between two groups in systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, and the pulse(p<0.05). Subject group showed statistically higher scores of satisfaction(p<0.05). There was significant difference between two groups(p<0.05) in the tingling and vibration sense. Conclusion: we found that the lumbago patients who are treated by electrotherapy with the music did not have additional difference in relief of pain, but electrotherapy with music can get better effects on their blood pressure, the pulse, satisfaction, and tingling-vibration sense. This means that the patients receive their treatment comfortably with rest. Therefore, We consider that it is desirable to play music to lumbago patients to offer the better treatment service to the patients.
Objectives: In this paper, we propose the ethical education direction by analyzing the personal information recognition and practice of music therapists. Methods: For the analyses, we selected 60 music therapists who answered a questionnaire from members of K Music Therapy Association, and analyzed task recognition and practice ask performance using IPA method. Results: In the IPA table, the areas of high recognition and practice (1) are the areas of personal information protection information management. In the IPA table, the areas of low awareness and high practice (2) are areas of privacy communication for those who have completed ethics education. In the IPA table, the areas of low awareness and low practice (3) are areas of privacy communication when ethics education is not completed. In the IPA table, areas of high awareness and low levels of practice (4) are areas of privacy protection. Conclusions: Continuing education should be provided to improve the curriculum on the protection of personal information for music therapists, thereby raising the awareness and practice of privacy.

The purpose of this study was to analyze a change in Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) level and the continuity of the effects in music therapy by applying short-term music therapy program in fire fighters with Post-traumatic Stress (PTS). Forty two fire fighters in 3 districts were randomly assigned to experimental group (21 subjects) and control group (21 subjects). Music therapy was applied in totally 10 sessions by two sessions (120 minutes) a day for 5 days. PTS level was measured immediately after the end of program, after 4 weeks, and after 12 weeks. As a result, PTS level has significantly decreased into $8.90{\pm}4.55$ from $26.52{\pm}2.32$ right after the music therapy program(p<0.05). And the effect was shown to be continued significantly up to after 4 weeks($11.95{\pm}4.57$) and after 12 weeks($13.76{\pm}5.62$)(p<0.05). As a result of research, it is considered that the music therapy is effective approach for reduction in PTS as for fire fighters who belong to the group with high risk of PTSD. Accordingly, the application of regular program for managing fire fighters' mental health is understood to likely to contribute to enhancing the field service competence.
