This study explored the role and characteristics of music that contributed to experiences of catharsis in music. An empirical phenomenological study was conducted to explore catharsis with 12 adults. Phenomenological reduction, change of attitude, literature interpretation, and hermeneutic circle were used for data collection and analysis. As a result, three categories, five themes, and 11 sub-themes were identified. The first category, here and now in music consisted of two themes: aesthetic experiences and expansion of musical novelty. The second category, inner connection through music consisted of one theme, re-experience of internal emotions. The third category, immersion and engagement in music consisted of two themes: ventilating or deepening of emotions and internal dynamics. Based on these results, the cathartic characteristics of music are discussed. First, the aesthetics and novelty of music kept participants fully stay in music. Second, music induced a re-experiencing of emotions by triggering memories or stimulating unresolved emotions. Third, the elements of music promoted emotional ventilation, deepening, and internal dynamics. This study is meaningful because it qualitatively examined the roles and characteristics of music that contribute to cathartic experience in the general adult population.

This study investigates the link between music integration in the lives of adults in their twenties and their school music experiences. Ten individuals in their twenties were interviewed to explore their experiences based on the self-determination theory's fundamental psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness). Participants were categorized into an active music engagement group (5 individuals) and an inactive group (5 individuals) for individual interviews. Transcripts were analyzed following the five steps of grounded theory data analysis technique. Results indicated a strong connection between music activities during school years and current motivation for music integration, associated with the fulfillment of psychological needs outlined in the self-determination theory. Particularly, this study identified the instructional methods, school music activities, and performance evaluations as closely related to autonomy, competence, and relatedness. It offers a comprehensive analysis of how experiences in these areas during school music activities correlate with values and motivations for music integration in adulthood. Additionally, the study suggests ways to promote the voluntary incorporation of music into life through positive experiences of autonomy, competence, and relatedness in music activities.

Digital braille music is an indispensible instrument for the blind persons to enjoy music and to proceed the more professional music education. Producing braille music requires professionals such as braille translators thereby it costs money for an individual to order braille music. Therefore, public libraries involve in producing and distributing braille music. Current status of digital braille music in Korea has been far from the fulfillment with the unmet needs of the blind people for diversity in their music preferences. This paper analyses the present condition of braille music possession in Korea National Library. Based on the analysis, policy proposals has been proposed.

This paper presents techniques to recognize music using back propagation network, one of the neural network algorithms, and to preprocess technique for music image. Music symbols and music notes are segmented by preprocessing such as binarization, slope correction, staff line removing, etc. Segmented music symbols and music notes are recognized by music note recognizing network and non-music note recognizing network. We proved correctness of proposed music recognition algorithm through experiments and analysis with various kind of musics.

Street fighter II is a game that played an innovative role in the genre of fighting games in the 1990s. There are many elements that this game has played, but I would like to describe the character's background music. Is terms of sound, it is an excellent game with theme music suitable for twelve characters and voice that comes out when using each character's technique. Street Fighter II shows different patterns of background music depending on the charcater's fitness. I analyze it in harmonical way and try to study it form the perspective of music psychology.

Objective: This paper is to analyze the impact of musical training to the fast ${\alpha}$ wave activation of the EEG. Background: EEG is neurological research method that can observe the brain function in real time. EEG can be used to determine the nervousness and relaxedness of a person who receives stimuli in a structured environment. Therefore, it is possible to interpret the functional state of human brain by the analysis of EEG. Method: The brain activities of two groups of university students in the point of RFA(Relative Fast Alpha) caused by different music are analyzed in this paper. One is the group of music majors and the other is the group of non-majors. Results: Music major and non-major groups show meaningful differences in RFA during exposed to classic and metal music. Conclusion: Learning experience on music affects RFA increment of music majors. Application: The result of this study will be used as basic data to evaluate the learning effects of students who want to study music.

The music videos of BTS go beyond the limit of media promoting music and shows their meaning in various ways and complete the visual message of music through fashion style. BTS' fashion style in the music videos shows a change in symbolic representation of the genre of each album and song, of which gender images are changing aligned with the music messages of BTS. The purpose of this study was to derive gender images of fashion style in BTS music videos and to interpret their meaning based on Judith Butler's theory that performativity creates discourse through iterative process. It is conducted as a research method, an analytical study was conducted in parallel with literature studies and empirical case analysis. The scope of the study was limited to 301 costumes that appeared in 21 official music videos from debut single album '2Cool 4 Skool' released in 2013 to the mini album 'Map of the Soul: Persona' released in 2019. As a result of the analysis, the controversial fashion style, challenging fashion style, boyish fashion style, hybrid fashion style, the playful fashion style were revealed. The conclusion of studying the gender image of BTS, interpreted by this analysis using Judith Butler's theory, is as follows. The gender image of BTS is the traditional image that identifies with the dominant gender discourse, the resistive gender image that intentionally distances mainstream culture, the eclectic image parodying the gender of the opposing term, and the deconstructive image that transcends the dominant gender discourse.

In essence, Musical theatre is a multimedia show, so when you listen to musical numbers, you will experience it through multiple senses. Therefore, in order to analyze musical numbers, emphasis should be placed on its interaction with various media such as lyrics, dance, and theatre, which have a direct association with the music. Through the Conceptual Blending Theory, which can comprehensively consider the combination of text and music, the combination of movement and music, and the combination of visual elements and music, this study analyzes the music of Musical . By exploring the result of interaction between lyrics and music, the interaction between choreography and music, and the interaction between stage and music, the artistry and intrinsic value of the work can be proved. In addition, we can discover the process and system of integrated interpretation through music analysis applying Conceptual Blending Theory. Therefore, Conceptual Blending Theory has sufficient utility as a methodology for music analysis of musical theatre.

Using Kohut's selfobject perspective as a foundation, this qualitative study explored the empathy with music and analyzed the empirical meanings in relation to 'Mirroring selfobject need', 'Idealized selfobject need', and 'Twinship selfobject need'. The participants included 13 music therapy graduate students who took part in individual interviews about their musical experiences. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed via content analysis. As a result, seven categories with 16 meaningful concepts emerged under three dimensions: Gratification of selfobject need for mirroring, gratification of selfobject need for idealization, and gratification of selfobject need for twinship. Participants described experiencing unconditional understanding and acceptance from music, feeling stronger and safer in music, and being identified with and connected to music. These findings suggest that participants continuously gratify their selfobject needs by expanding the self and empathizing themselves through music. This study in significant in that it is the first qualitative study to analyze participants' musical experiences from Kohut's selfobject perspective.

The purpose of this analysis was to classify music therapy studies published in KCI journals to understand the type of research being conducted and trends in the research. This study analyzed 472 music therapy articles published in KCI journals from 2005 to October 31, 2017. The study analyzed the overall characteristics of the included studies, trends in each research field, study subjects, research types, and commonalities and differences between research fields. It was confirmed that the number of music therapy studies published in KCI journals steadily increased from 2005. The results also confirmed that the research subjects and types of music therapy research became more diverse. For example, earlier studies focused on participants with disabilities, but populations without disabilities were increasingly the focus of more recent studies. Similarly, earlier studies were mostly experimental or descriptive, but more recent research included historical, philosophical, and program development studies. The results of analysis confirm that music therapy research is evolving and being conducted in cooperation with many other fields. This article provides a snapshot of the current state of music therapy research and offers implications for the future of music therapy research with multidisciplinary characteristics.
