Muscle rupture is not a common disease. But it is known that partial muscle rupture commonly occurs to active sports athletes or heavy workers who receive severe physical stress. Gastrocnemius muscle rupture(this is called ‘tennis leg’)is often caused by sudden overstretching of the muscle through concomitant ankle dorsiflexion and knee extension. This rupture may result in a swelling and pain that is easily confused with other diseases like thrombophlebitis. Ultrasonography can confirm the clinical suspicion of tennis leg and the assessment of the size of the lesion, and can discriminate from other diseases. So it is a useful, noninvasive, low-cost modality to diagnose and follow up tennis leg. We experienced 2 cases of partial gastrocnemius muscle rupture patients who were treated by conservative methods or acupuncture therapy and followed up with Ultrasonography, and arrived at some interesting results, which we report along with a review of some relevant literature.

A 69-year-old patient with rupture of anterolateral papillary muscle following non-Q-wave myocardial infarction is described. Transesophageal echocardiography was useful in making the diagnosis. Mitral valve replacement was performed 22 days after the onset of acute myocardial infarction. The patient was discharged in his good condition and coronary angiography is scheduled.

We describe a case of gastrocnemius muscle rupture in a goral that got caught in a live trap set up to capture wild boars. We established a diagnostic method based on clinical signs and imaging examination findings, including magnetic resonance imaging for gastrocnemius muscle rupture with symptoms such as hindlimb lameness and plantigrade posture of unknown cause in wild animals. Although this condition is rare, this report will help veterinarians diagnose several diseases of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems in wild animals. This is the first report of successful diagnosis and treatment of gastrocnemius muscle rupture in gorals in Korea.

A 3-month-old Korean native cattle (Hanwoo) calf with difficulty taking normal posture and an inability to rise was referred for a definite diagnosis and active treatment, including surgery. The calf had a history of an accident in which both hind limbs were trapped in a barn structure. After admission, a "rabbit leg" posture was observed, a typical sign of gastrocnemius muscle rupture, and both digits were knuckled downward like they were trying to grip the ground. This was considered to be a result of the superficial digital flexor not rupturing but only the gastrocnemius muscle rupturing. Physical examination revealed laceration of the metatarsus and firmness behind both stifle joints which were presumed to be the sites of gastrocnemius muscle rupture. Skeletal abnormalities, including fractures, were ruled out by radiography. Based on these findings, the patient was diagnosed with bilateral gastrocnemius muscle rupture, and surgery was performed to reconnect the head of the ruptured muscle. Because the rupture occurred perpendicular to the muscle direction, the locking loop technique, a method of suturing severed tendons, was used to reduce the tension. After surgery, the cast was used to prevent further injuries and promote voluntary rehabilitation. Follow-up was completed, with the calf showing normal posture and gait 112 days after surgery. This is the first case report in the Republic of Korea describing the successful diagnosis and treatment of bilateral gastrocnemius muscle rupture in a calf.

There are three types of papillary muscle of the left ventricle[finger, tethered and mixed type] according to the morphology of the attachment to the ventricular wall. Especially finger type of the papillary muscle is more vulnerable to the injury than tethered or mixed type, because their blood supply is dependent upon the central artery whose diameter is less than 1mm and the papillary muscle itself is the end organ of the heart anatomically. There are several causes of papillary muscle rupture but few cases have been reported. Recently we have experienced 3 cases of papillary muscle rupture of the left ventricle with successful mitral valve replacement and the causes are postmyocardial infarction, percutaneous mitral valvulotomy and non-penetrating chest trauma. The common finding is the morphology of papillary muscle, that is the finger type and their rupture type is the complete type.

The hamstring muscle injury is a quite common sports injury which has a wide spectrum of treatment option that simple muscle strain can be treated conservatively otherwise total rupture of muscle or musculotendinous junction must be treated surgically. Among them, rupture of proximal hamstring muscle near at its origin site is quite uncommon and it should be treated surgically because it could cause several complications if not treated appropriately. In this case report, the authors report successful surgical treatment of acute rupture of proximal hamstring muscle and also would like to review the clinical presentation of this type of injury.

Gastrocnemius muscle partial rupture is a common muscle injury. This case is report on a patient with a gastrocnemius muscle partial rupture who was continuously observed with ultrasonography while receiving Korean medicine treatment. Acupuncture, pharmacoacupuncture, herbal medicine, physical therapy and rehabilitation treatment were performed on a patient diagnosed with gastrocnemius partial rupture. The improvement of symptoms was evaluated using Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Range of Motion (ROM) of ankle, circumference of calf and size of hematoma by using ultrasonography. NRS decreased more than 90%, ROM of ankle joint gradually improved, calf circumference improved, and hematoma reduced by more than 90% when measured by ultrasonography. In this study, gastrocnemius muscle partial rupture was observed with ultrasonography, and it is considered that the Korean medical treatment is useful for gastrocnemius muscle partial rupture.

Papillary muscle rupture with severe acute mitral regurgitation is a rare complication of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) that causes pulmonary congestion and cardiogenic shock. Moreover, it has a poor prognosis. Surgical intervention, including revascularization, is indicated; however, surgical mortality remains high. We report the case of an 85-year-old woman with cardiogenic shock from severe acute mitral regurgitation, in whom a hybrid intervention, combining percutaneous coronary intervention with mitral valve replacement via minithoracotomy, was performed after post-infarction papillary muscle rupture. She was discharged in a favorable clinical condition. We describe a novel hybrid intervention for treating a rare complication of AMI, which could minimize surgical invasion in elderly patients, prevent disuse syndrome after the intervention, and improve prognosis. However, mitral valve surgery via minithoracotomy for emergency cases requires technical proficiency, as well as collaboration with other healthcare professionals, and the choice to perform this procedure requires careful consideration.

Facial massages are frequently performed to achieve a feeling of freshness, rejuvenation, skin tightening, and delayed onset of wrinkles. However, vigorous massages can induce unexpected symptoms. Here, we present a case of a woman who complained of an asymmetric facial appearance and a mass-like lesion following a long-term facial massage intervention. A facelift incision was performed. Platysma muscle rupture was observed intraoperatively, which was then repaired. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a vigorous facial massage-induced ipsilateral platysma rupture.

During sports activity, rectus femoris muscle can be commonly injured as the quadriceps contracts forcefully to extend the knee and flex the hip, and rectus femoris muscle has a high percentage of type II muscle fibers which enable it to produce rapid forceful activity and the muscle is the only biarticular muscle of the quadriceps. Avulsion fractures by the traction of rectus femoris from the anterior inferior iliac spine in children are often reported. Rarely, complete rupture of proximal musculotendinous junction of rectus femoris muscle in adult may occurs by chronic repetitive stimulation and may mimic soft tissue neoplasm in the case of no history of antecedent trauma. However, there has been no report of acute complete rupture of origins of the rectus femoris muscle during relay race till now. So, we report a case of acute complete rupture of origins of the rectus femoris muscle occurred during relay race in middle-aged man, diagnosed by magnetic resonance image and treated by surgical repair with review of current literature.
