The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Kinesio taping(KT) on the maximal power and muscle activity of erector spinae. 30 male subjects were allocated in this study and randomly divided into experimental and control groups. All subjects were measured for maximal power of trunk extensors and muscle activities of iliocostalis lumborum, longissimus, and multifidus between pre and post experiment. Maximal power was calculated using a dynamometer(Power Track II, JTECH medical, USA), and muscle activities were calculated using a surface EMG(MP150 BIOPAC System Inc. CA. USA). Maximal power of trunk extensor showed no significant difference between pre and post intervention in both groups(p>0.05). Muscle activity of iliocostalis lumborum, longissimus, and multifidus showed no significant difference between pre and post intervention(p>0.05). Finally, there was no significant difference between Experimental and control group in maximal power and muscle activity of trunk extensor. These study results suggested that KT did not affect increase or decrease in maximal power and muscle activities of trunk extensor.
Purpose: This study investigated the effects of trunk muscle activity with power grasping during one leg stance. Methods: Twenty-eight subjects participated in this study. Subjects were divided into two groups, one that performed power grasping, and another that did not. An investigator measured the activities of a subject's trunk muscle such as internal oblique (IO), external oblique (EO), erector spinae (ES), and gluteus medius (GM) while a subject was doing one leg stance. Results: An independent t-test was used to analyze trunk muscle activities with power grasping during one leg stance between the experimental group and the control group. Only the EO activity differed significantly between groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results indicate that one leg stance with power grasping affected trunk muscle activity. Therefore, this is a useful method for providing lumbar spine stability.
Background: This study was performed to identify what effect plyometric exercise with application of kinesio taping gives on muscle activity and power of lower limb. Methods: In order to conduct research, total 14 male students at G university located Gwangyang city were randomly assigned; 7 for experimental group (with kinesio taping application) and 7 for control groups(without kinesio taping application) were conducted with box drill, one of the plyometric exercise 5 times a week for 4 weeks. Muscle activities were measured by using electrodiagnosis equipment on quadriceps and gastrocnemius. Collected data was analyzed by using Windows SPSS version 19.0. Results: Muscle activities show statistically significant differences (p<.05) both before and after exercise in experimental and control groups in terms of vastus medialis, rectus femoris, vastus lateralis and lateral gastrocnemius. However, only medial gastrocnemius shows statistically significant differences in experimental group compared before and after exercise. Sargent jump for measuring power shows that only experimental group presents statistically significant differences (p<.05). Two groups show that vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, lateral gastrocnemius and medial gastrocnemius only in muscle activities show statistically significant differences (p<.05) after exercise. Conclusion: The result of this survey indicates that plyometric exercise is effective to improve muscle activity and power of lower limb, especially, the group who exercises with application of kinesio tape is more effective than the other group with no tape application. Therefore, it is considered that plyometric exercise with tape is more effective to improve power and muscle strength.
Purpose: This study analyzed the effects of meridian massage on the muscle power, ROM, and ADL in persons with cerebral palsy. Method: A non-equivalent pre-test/post-test design was used. The data were collected from August to October, 2000 from 10 persons with cerebral palsy (a control group of 5 and an experimental group of 5). Muscle power was evaluated with the Brunnstrom-Dennen gravity test, ROM with a goniometer, and ADL with a self developed ADL scale. T-test, repeated measure ANOVA were used for statistical analysis. Result: The results are; 1. For muscle power, both time series group difference (F=10.66, p=0.000) and the total period group difference (F=72.67, p=0.000) were significant between the two groups. 2. ROM was not significantly different between the two groups. 3. For ADL, both time series group difference (F=7.09, p=0.001) and total period group difference (F=35.99, p=0.000) were significant between the two groups. Conclusion: Overall, this study shows that Meridian massage is effective for muscle power, ROM, and ADL in persons with cerebral palsy person. So it can be used to develope effective nursing programs to improve the function of motion of persons with cerebral palsy.
This study was carried out to investigate the optimun conditions for the isolation of low molecular weight peptides containing histidine, and to evaluate the antioxidant effects of skipjack boiled extracts(SBE). The results are summarized as follows : L-histidine contents of the ordinary muscle and dark muscle extracts were $ 83.1{\pm}1.75{\mu}M/g\;and\;11.0{\pm}2.39\;{\mu}M/g$, respectively. The L-histidine level of the dark muscle was much lower than that of ordinary muscle in the SBE. The extracts were treated with alcalase and neutrase under different pH levels, temperatures, and times. The optimum hydrolysis conditions of SBE were pH 7.0 and a $60^{\circ}$C temperature for 2 hr in the batch reactor, which hydrolyzed 63% of the SBE. HPLC analysis showed a removing effect of the ultrafiltration permeate (UFP) to high molecular weight impurities in SBE. SBE and pure carnosine participated as inhibiting agents to, which was confirmed through the autoxidation processing of linoleic acid. UFP treatment improved the inhibiting ability of SBE to the autoxidation of linoleic acid. The reducing power of the UFP-treated ordinary muscle extracts were 10-fold higher than the dark muscle extracts, and 0.7-fold higher than 20 mM pure carnosine. The UFP-treated ordinary muscle extracts had greater reducing power activity than pure carnosine. The scavenging activities on DPPH radical of the different treated-SBE and pure carnosine were also investigated. Scavenging activities of the ordinary and dark muscle extracts and the pure carnosine were 90%, 70%, and 45%, respectively. In summary, Skipjack boiled extracts (SBE) demonstrated that low molecular weight peptides containing histidine are capable of inhibiting lipid oxidation. They also possessed effective abilities as free radical scavengers and reducing agents, and these activities may increase with increasing concentrations.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of a cognitive improvement program on cognition, activities of daily living (ADL), depression, life satisfaction, and grasping power in small groups. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants were 127 elders who were never diagnosed with dementia and could read (experimental: 61, control: 66). The program was consisted of 8 sessions to improve vocabulary and writing skills and fine motor skills. Each session was applied once a week for 8 weeks. A group was consisted of less than five members. Results: Cognition (t=3.82, p<.001), depression (t=-2.24, p=.027), life satisfaction (t=2.25, p=.027), and grasping power (Rt: t=2.44, p=.016, Lt: t=2.63, p=.010) except ADL (t=-0.49, p=.622) were significantly increased in the experimental group after the cognitive improvement program compared to the control group. Conclusion: This study indicates that the cognitive improvement program was effective to improve cognition, depression, life satisfaction and grasping power. Further study is needed in order to identify continuous effects of this cognitive improvement program.
Purpose: This study was to determine the effects of exercise program for knee osteoarthritis on the physical fitness in elderly. The progressive exercise program included flexibility, strength, endurance, active range of motion and function activities. Methods: Nineteen subjects with osteoarthritis of the knees randomized to exercise group(n=10) or control group(n=9), but fourteen subjects completed the trial with an adherence of 70% to the intervention and 77% to the control. The physical fitness(back muscle strength, grip strength, flexibility, muscle power, agility, equilibrium) were evaluated with Helmas(Health Management System) made by Sewoo system at pre- and post- intervention. Results: The data were analysed with the two-way repeated ANOVA and paired t-test. The physical fitness had no difference among the groups and times except muscle power. Within experimental group, muscle power and agility were significantly increased between pre and post intervention, while the control group showed no change. Conclusion: Exercise program for knee osteoarthirits appear to be effective in muscle power and agility.
The modern convenient life formed by industrial development becomes lack of exercise and takes an interest in diet. Specially, professional walking shoes is developed as people take an interest in jogging, Those shoes, professional walking shoes or Dietshoes, increase exercise effects by change of heel types. Therefore, this study investigated motility effects by EMG experiment in order to measure Muscle Activities (MA) while wearing diet shoes (backless). Experiment was conducted by EMG measurement, from calf (gastrocnemius muscle), thigh (vastus muscle) and waist (erector spinae muscle), of 12 high school students. Exercise effects between the two shoes were analyzed by EMG (MF; Median Frequency, MPF; Mean Power Frequency, ZCR; Zero Crossing Rate). Results showed that the Dietshoes(MF: 48.21Hz, MPF: 65.0Hz, ZCR: 100.6Hz) had larger EMG value than that of Normal shoes(MF: 40.47Hz, MPF: 58.04Hz, ZCR: 82.09Hz). Also, in MA, the highest activities are showed in the calf, the second one is in waist, and last one is in thigh during gate. ANOVA between shoes in measurement parts showed significant effects in MF (gastrocnemius: p-value=.022, vastus laterals: p-value=.037, erector spinae: p-value=.082), MPF (gastrocnemius: p-value=.032, vastus laterals: p-value=.046, erector spinae: p-value=.090), and ZCR (gastrocnemius: p-value=.000, vastus laterals: p-value=.004, erector spinae: p-value=.134). And MA of Dietshoes is higher than that of Normal shoes, and decreasing rate of MA in Dietshoes is less than that of Normal shoes. Thus, this study validates exercise effects of Dietshoes.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a noninvasive method used to capture electrically muscle activity, which can be easily measured even during exercise. The basic unit of muscle activity is the motor unit, and because an sEMG signal is a superposition of motor unit action potentials, analysis of muscle activity using sEMG should ideally be done from the perspective of motor unit activity. However, conventional techniques can only evaluate sEMG signals based on abstract signal features, such as root-mean-square (RMS) and mean-power-frequency (MPF), and cannot detect individual motor unit activities from an sEMG signal. On the other hand, needle EMG can only capture the activity of a few local motor units, making it extremely difficult to grasp the activity of the entire muscle. Therefore, in this study, a method to visualize the activities of motor units in a single-channel sEMG signal by relocating wavelet coefficients obtained by redundant discrete wavelet analysis is proposed. The information obtained through this method resides in between the information obtained through needle EMG and the information obtained through sEMG using conventional techniques.
