Effect of Prior Muscle Contraction or Passive Stretching on Eccentric-Induced Muscle Damage

  • Purpose: This tutorial review investigated the effect of prior fatigue and passive stretches on eccentric contraction-induced muscle injuries, as well as the underlying mechanisms of eccentric contraction-related injuries. Methods: Contraction-induced muscle damage is the most common disabling problem in sports and routines. The mechanisms underlying the pathology and prevention of muscle damage lessened by prior fatigue or stretches are critical in assessing musculoskeletal injuries. Even though there are treatments to reduce eccentric contraction-induced muscle injuries, fatigue negatively influences them. Therefore, we reviewed previous studies on eccentric contraction-induced muscle injuries with prior treatments using the MEDLINE and PubMed databases. Results: Prior passive stretching had a preventative and therapeutic effect, but prior lengthening contractions did not. On the other hand, prior isometric contractions involving relatively small forces may not provide a sufficient stimulus to induce protection. As a result, high force isometric contractions may be necessary. The studies supported the positive effects of prior fatigue, concluding that it was a factor in determining the amount of damage caused by eccentric exercise. This was due to a reduction in force and increased temperature. Studies that did not support the positive effects of prior fatigue concluded that a shift in optimal length to a longer length and reduced energy absorption during lengthening are evidence that fatigue is not related to muscle injuries induced by lengthening. Conclusion: The variability of the experiment models, conditions, muscles, and treatment methods make it necessary to interpret the conditions of previous studies carefully and draw conclusions without making direct comparisons. Thus, additional studies should be carefully conducted to investigate the positive effect of fatigue on lengthening.

Combined Effects of High Pressure and Heat on Shear Value and Histological Characteristics of Bovine Skeletal Muscle

  • Changes in shear force value, transverse sections, myofibrils and intramuscular connective tissue of bovine skeletal muscle exposed to the combination of high-pressure up to 400 MPa and heat (30 and $60^{\circ}C$) were studied. The shear force value decreased by pressure-heat treatment up to 200 MPa at 30 and $60^{\circ}C$, and then slightly increased over 200 MPa at $30^{\circ}C$. Shear force values of treated muscles were lower than those of untreated ones. Gaps between muscle fibers in the untreated muscle were a little clear, and then they became very clear in the treated muscles up to 200 MPa at 30 and $60^{\circ}C$. However, the gaps reduced significantly over 200 MPa at $30^{\circ}C$. The remarkable rupture of I-band and loss of M-line materials progressed in the myofibrils with increasing pressure applied. However, degradation and loss of the Z-line in myofibrils observed in the muscle treated at $60^{\circ}C$ was not apparent in the muscle treated at $30^{\circ}C$. The length of the sarcomere initially contracted by pressure-heat treatment of 100 MPa at $30^{\circ}C$ seemed to have recovered with increase of the pressure up to 400 MPa. In the muscle treated at $60^{\circ}C$, the length of sarcomere gradually decreased with increase of the pressure up to 400 MPa. In the treated muscles, changes in the honeycomb-like structure of endomysium were observed and accelerated with increase of the pressure. A wavy appearance clearly observed at the inside surface of endomysium in the untreated muscles gradually decreased in the treated muscles with increase of the pressure. Tearing of the membrane was observed in the muscles treated over 150 MPa at $30^{\circ}C$, as observed in the sample pressurized at 100 MPa at $60^{\circ}C$. The roughening, disruption and fraying of the membrane were observed over 200 MPa at $60^{\circ}C$. From the results obtained, the combination of high-pressure and heat treatments seems to be effective to tenderize tough meat. The shear force value may have some relationship with deformation of intramuscular connective tissue and myofibrils.

Relationships among Instrumental Tenderness Parameters, Meat Quality Traits, and Histochemical Characteristics in Porcine Longissimus dorsi Muscle

  • The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between instrumental tenderness parameters and histochemical characteristics in the porcine longissimus dorsi muscle, and to investigate a comparison between tenderness parameters such as the Warner-Bratzler shear-force (WBS) and texture profile analysis (TPA). A negative relationship between WBS and fiber area was observed. However, there was no significant relationship between hardness and muscle fiber area. The percentage of fiber type IIb exhibited a positive correlation with hardness. There was a negative relationship between the type IIa composition percentage and hardness. This study showed that some muscle fiber characteristics were related to WBS and TPA parameters, especially hardness.

미세전류신경근자극이 Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, 혈청 Creatine Kinase, 최대 수의적 등척성 수축에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Microcurrent Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation on Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, Serum Creatine Kinase, and Maximal Voluntary Isometric Contraction: A Preliminary Report)

  • The purpose of this study was to test the microcurrent electrical neuromuscular stimulation on muscle soreness, serum creatine kinase levels and force deficits evident following a high-intensity eccentric exercise bout. 10 volunteer male subjects were randomly assigned to a treatment group or to a control group. Exercise consisted of high-intensity eccentric contractions of the elbow flexors. Resistance was reduced as subjects fatigued, until they reached exhaustion. Muscle soreness rating was determined using a visual analog scale. Serum creatine kinase levels were analyzed using a blood sample. Force deficits were determined by measures of maximal voluntary isometric contraction at $90^{\circ}$ of elbow flexion on a Orthotron II dynamometer. Muscle soreness rating, serum creatine kinase levels and maximal voluntary isometric contraction were determined at the before exercise and again at 24 and 48 hours postexericse. Treatments were applied immediately following exercise. The control group subjects rested following their exercise bout. Statistical analysis showed significant increases in muscle soreness rating and significant decreases in maximal voluntary isometric contraction when the before exercise was compared with 24 and 48 hour measures(p<0.01). No significant effects were observed between groups in muscle soreness rating and maximal voluntary isometric contraction(p>0.05). Highly significants differences in serum creatine kinase levels were found using on Analysis of variance(ANOVA) repeated measures between groups for each time cycles(p<0.001). This modality may have benefits when used early stage in the muscle damage.

Intra- and inter-rater reliability of muscle thickness measurement of the tibialis anterior using different inward pressures

  • Objective: This reliability study examined the effects of applying varying induced inward pressures using a transducer placed at 0° neutral ankle position (NEU) and 15° ankle dorsiflexion (DF) on tibialis anterior (TA) muscle thickness using a custom-made device with a force indicator during rehabilitative ultrasound imaging. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Twenty-four healthy subjects were recruited in this study. Two examiners measured the muscle thickness of the TA at 0° NEU and 15° DF in 3 conditions of inward pressures (1.0 N, 2.0 N, and 4.0 N) using a custom-made holder. The muscle thickness was measured three times for each of the conditions arranged in random order. For intra- and inter-rater reliability, the intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) with 95% confidence intervals, standard error of measurement, minimal detectable change, and coefficient of variation were analyzed. One-way repeated measures analysis of variance was conducted for investigating changes of TA muscle thickness according to the inward pressures of the transducers. Results: The intra-rater reliability of TA muscle thickness measurement was excellent (ICC3,1: 0.92-0.96) for all conditions (at both ankle joint angles per varying inward pressure). Likewise, the inter-rater reliability of TA muscle thickness measurement was excellent (ICC2,1: 0.89-0.97) under same conditions. The mean of TA thickness showed the trend of decreasing significantly with increased inward pressures at all ankle joint angles (p<0.05). Conclusions: Use of this custom-made device with a force indicator is useful to accomplish the high intra- and inter-rater reliability of TA muscle thickness measurement at both ankle joint angles in reducing the measurement error.

  • Effects of Haenginbanhatang Extract on the Contraction of Isolated Guinea Pig Trachea Smooth Muscle. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of Haenginbanhatang extract on the contractile force of the isolated guinea pig trachea smooth muscle and elucidate its mechanism. The results were obtained as follows: 1. The contratile response of the trachea smooth muscle of the guinea pig to histamine was significantly inhibited by Haenginbanhatang. 2. Effects of Haenginbanhatang extract on the contractile response of the isolated guinea pig smooth muscle pretreated propranolol was not significant. 3. The contractile response of isolated guinea pig smooth muscle pretreated methylene blue was significantly inhibited by Haenginbanhatang, 4. The contractile response of the trachea smooth muscle of the guinea pig to prostaglandin F2a was significantly inhibited by Haenginbanhatang. 5. Effect of prostaglandin F2a on the contractile response of guinea pig smooth muscle pretreated Haenginbanhatang was not significant. According to the above results, it was suggested that the contractile response mechanism of the guinea pig smooth muscle to Haenginbanhatang was related to cyclic GMP.

Evaluation of Muscle Tension in Hemiplegia Patients with a Real-time Monitoring System during High Intensity Laser Therapy

  • In this study, we evaluated the muscle tension in hemiplegia patients using a real-time monitoring system combined with high-intensity laser treatment (HILT) device. Five hemiplegia patients were treated with HILT in the left forearm muscle for 8 minutes, and the muscle was relaxed for 8 minutes following the treatment. Both the gradient of the force-displacement curves and the muscle hardness decreased during the therapy, and the effects were maintained following the treatment. The results show that muscle tension decreased rapidly during laser irradiation, and the efficacy of the treatment depended on the duration of the illness. Consequently, we conclude that this combined HILT and real-time muscle tension monitoring system is useful for evaluating the therapeutic procedure and for treatment of muscle pain.

팔자세의 유형에서 손의 쥐기 강도가 어깨근육의 활성도에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Hand Grip Force on the Activity of Shoulder Muscles in the Patterns of Arm Position)

  • 본 연구는 정상 성인을 대상으로 광범위한 어깨관절 각도의 팔자세 유형에서 여러 가지 손의 쥐기 강도의 차이에 따라 어깨주위근 활성도를 측정하여, 직업과 관련된 어깨 손상을 예방하고 치료하는데 유용한 기초임상자료로 제공하고자 한다. 팔자세의 유형에 따라 다양한 강도로 쥐기를 시행 할 때 어깨 주위 근육의 활성도를 알아보기 위해 모든 대상자들은 MVC를 측정하였고 동일한 자세에서 어깨관절 $0^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $160^{\circ}$에서 각각 최대 쥐기 강도의 30%, 50%, 70%를 무작위로 실시하여 팔자세의 유형에서 쥐기강도에 따른 앞세모근, 가시위근, 위등세모근, 가시아래근의 %MVC를 구하여 어깨근 활성도를 알아보았다. 팔자세의 유형에 따른 각 집단의 %MVC를 비교하기 위하여 $0^{\circ}$에서 최대 힘의 30%, 50%, 70%로 쥐기를 비교한 결과 앞세모근, 가시위근, 위등세모근, 가시아래근 간의 근활성도에서는 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았으나, $90^{\circ}$$160^{\circ}$에서는 앞세모근, 가시위근, 위등세모근, 가시아래근에서 유의한 차이가 나타났으며(p<.001). 사후검정결과 모든 각도에서 앞세모근과 가시아래근의 근활성도가 높게 나타났으며, 위등세모근의 근활성도는 가장 낮게 나타났다. 다양한 산업현장의 근로 여건 등을 고려하여 과도한 손의 움직임은 안정성과 가동성에 기여를 하는 어깨주위 근육들에 손상을 초래할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 특히 가시아래근의 경우 팔의 각도가 클수록 그리고 쥐기 힘이 커질수록 근활성도가 증가 하는 양상을 보였다. 이러한 양상은 머리위로 손을 올려 사용하는 작업현장에서의 어깨손상예방과 손상된 근육을 선택적으로 재활하는 측면에서 기초 임상 자료로 활용 될 수 있을 것이다.

냉각이 반복된 근수축과 사람의 건 구조에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Cooling on Repeated Muscle Contractions and Tendon Structures in Human)

  • 연구목적: 이 연구는 피부표면 냉각이 생체내의 건구조 점탄성 특성에 미치는 영향을 비교하였다. 방법: 7명의 남성 실험 대상자는 족저굴곡 운동을 10회$\times$10set, 60초 간격으로 최대 수의적 수축을 6초간 각각 실시하였다. 각 측정 전후에 내측 비복근(MG)의 건과 건막의 신장은 초음파 검사법에 의하여 직접 측정되었다(건 장력과 건 신장의 관계로 평가 되었다). 건 횡단면적과 족 관절 모멘트 암은 자기공명영상법(MRI)으로부터 얻어졌다. 건 장력은 관절 모멘트와 건 모멘트 암으로 계산되었다. 또한 스트레스는 횡단면적영역(CSA)을 힘으로 나눔으로써 얻어졌다. 스트레인은 건의 길이로 표준화된 치환으로부터 측정되었다. 결과: 냉각 후에 건 장력은, 비냉각 보다 냉각한 측이 유의하게 높았다. 스티프네스는 비냉각 조건 보다 냉각 조건하에서 높은 유의수준을 나타냈다. 최대의 스트레인과 스트레스는 냉각조건하에서 $7.4{\pm}0.7$$36.4{\pm}1.8$ MPa을 나타냈고, 비냉각 조건하가 $7.8{\pm}8.5$$31.8{\pm}1.1$ MPa (p<0.05)을 나타냈다. 결론: 이 연구의 결과는 피부표면 냉각으로 인해 인간의 근지구력이 건 스티프네스와 탄성률을 증가시키는 것을 시사하는 연구라 하겠다. 피부 표면 냉각으로 인한 근지구력의 개선이 근과 건에 직접적인 영향을 미침을 나타내주고 있다.

박쥐의 동면온도 범위에서 작용하는 비행근의 수축기능 (Contractile Function of a Flight Muscle Over the Range of Hibernation Temperature in Bats)

  • 온도 적응에 관한 연구들을 보면 생리기능 상의 최적온도가 생물 개체의 일상 체온에 잘 일치한다는 내용을 보여주고 있다. 동면 중의 박쥐들은 월동장소의 주위온도(9$^{\circ}$-12$^{\circ}$C)보다 약간 높은 범위에서 체온을 유지하는 것으로 관찰되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이 동물들의 근육이 동면체온 범위에서 최대의 수축기능을 발휘하도록 조정되리라는 가설을 설정하고 이를 실험하기 위해 한국큰과박쥐 Rhinolophus ferrumequlnum korai (n = 5)의 이두박근 수축기능을 $10^{\circ}$-35$^{\circ}$C범위의 근육온도에서 실험하였다. 상대적 강축힘(최대 강축힘에 대한 퍼세트 값)은 이들의 동ㅁㄴ체온과 일치하는 $10^{\circ}$-15$^{\circ}$C 범위에서 가장 높았다. 한편 비동면성 동물은 37$^{\circ}$C의 범주에서 체온을 유지하며 강축힘에 대해 30$^{\circ}$-40$^{\circ}$C 범위의 최적온도를 보이는데 이를 종합해 볼 때 본 연구의 결과는 박쥐의 비행근 기능이 계절적인 체온변화에 준하여 조정되고 있음을 보여준다고 하겠다. 박쥐의 근육이 낮은 체온에서도 강한힘을 발생한다는 본 실험 결과는 동면동안 이따금 수분섭취나 배설을 위해 날아야하는 점 또는 천적으로부터 도피할 수 있어야 하는 점을 고려할 때 적응의 한 예라고 사료된다.
