Artificial neural networks (ANNs) play an important role in the fields of function approximation, prediction, and classification. ANN performance is critically dependent on the input parameters, including the number of neurons in each layer, and the optimal values of weights and biases assigned to each neuron. In this study, we apply the particle swarm optimization method, a popular optimization algorithm for determining the optimal values of weights and biases for every neuron in different layers of the ANN. Several regression models, including general linear regression, Fourier regression, smoothing spline, and polynomial regression, are conducted to evaluate the proposed method's prediction power compared to multiple linear regression (MLR) methods. In addition, residual analysis is conducted to evaluate the optimized ANN accuracy for both training and test datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively determine optimal values for neuron weights and biases, and high accuracy results are obtained for prediction applications. Evaluations of the proposed method reveal that it can be used for prediction and estimation purposes, with a high accuracy ratio, and the designed model provides a reliable technique for optimization. The simulation results show that the optimized ANN exhibits superior performance to MLR for prediction purposes.
Particulate matter in indoor environments has caused public concerns in recent years. The objective of this research is to explore the influence of radiators on particle size distributions and concentrations. The particle size distributions as well as concentrations above radiators and in the adjacent indoor air are monitored in forty-two indoor environments in Xi'an, China. The temperatures, relative humidity and air velocities are also measured. The particle size distributions above radiators at ten locations are analyzed. The results show that the functional difference of indoor environments has little impact on the particle size distributions above radiators. Then the effects of the environmental parameters (particle concentrations in the adjacent indoor air, temperatures, relative humidities and air velocities) on particle concentrations above radiators are assessed by applying multiple linear regression analysis. Three multiple linear regression models are established to predict the concentrations of $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_1$ above radiators.

The ultrasonic pulse velocity test has a strong potential to be developed into a very useful and relatively inexpensive in-place test for assuring the quality of concrete placed in structure. The main problem in realizing this potential is that the relationship between compressive strength ad ultrasonic pulse velocity is uncertain and concrete is an inherently variable material. The objective of this study is to improve the reliability of in-place concrete strength predictions by ultrasonic pulse velocity method. Experimental cement content, s/a rate, and curing condition of concrete. Accuracy of the prediction expressed in empirical formula are examined by multiple regression analysis and linear regression analysis and practical equation for estimation the concrete strength are proposed. Multiple regression model uses water-cement ratio cement content s/a rate, and pulse velocity as dependent variables and the compressive strength as an independent variable. Also linear regression model is used to only pulse velocity as dependent variables. Comparing the results of the analysis the proposed equation expressed highest reliability than other previous proposed equations.

In this study, four kinds of $Si_3N_4$-based ceramic cutting tools with different sintering time were fabricated to investigate the relation among mechanical properties, grain size and tool life. They were used to turn gray cast iron at a cutting speed of 330m/min and depth of cut of 0.5mm and 1mm in dry, continuos cutting conditions. Multiple linear regression model was used to determine the relations among the mechanical property, grain size and the density. It was found that the combination of hardness and fracture toughness showed a good relation with tool life. It was also shown that hardness was the most important single element for the tool life.
The objective of this study was to present regression equations between reservoir water quality and land use types of the watersheds. In order to derive regression equations, a multiple linear regression analysis was used using observed data from 88 reservoirs in the Kyungpook Provcince. The measured values of BOD, COD, T-N, and T-P were correlated with the areas of land use types. 23 regression equations were obtained for all the water quality items and watershed sizes. The results showed that 2 regression equations have the multiple correlation coefficient(MCC) above 0.90, 10 regression equations have the MCC values from 0.70 to 0.90, 9 equations have the MCC from 0.40 to 0.70, and 2 equations have the MCC from 0.20 to 0.40. The results of this study can be used to estimate reservoir water quality simply and quickly in the planning phase.
This study derives the factors which affect the occurrence of arson from statistical data (population, economic, and social factors) by multiple regression analysis. Multiple regression analysis applies to 4 forms of functions, linear functions, semi-log functions, inverse log functions, and dual log functions. Also analysis respectively functions by using the stepwise progress which considered selection and deletion of the independent variable factors by each steps. In order to solve a problem of multiple regression analysis, autocorrelation and multicollinearity, Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) and the Durbin-Watson coefficient were considered. Through the analysis, the optimal model was determined by adjusted Rsquared which means statistical significance used determination, Adjusted R-squared of linear function is scored 0.935 (93.5%), the highest of the 4 forms of function, and so linear function is the optimal model in this study. Then interpretation to the optimal model is conducted. As a result of the analysis, the factors affecting the arson were resulted in lines, the incidence of crime (0.829), the general divorce rate (0.151), the financial autonomy rate (0.149), and the consumer price index (0.099).
This study attempts to present the linear regression analysis that involves more than one regressor variable, because regression analysis is the most widely used statistical technique for describing, predicting and estimating the relationships between given data. The model of multiple linear regression may be solved directly by the two linear programming methods, i.e., to minimize the sum of the absolute deviation (MSD) and to minimize the maximum deviation(MMD). In addition, some results was compared to each techniques for accuracy and tested to the validity of statistical meaning.

Traffic data collected using advanced equipment are highly valuable for traffic planning and efficient road operation. However, there is a problem regarding the reliability of the analysis results due to equipment defects, errors in the data aggregation process, and missing data. Unlike other detectors installed for each vehicle lane, radar detectors can yield different error types because they detect all traffic volume in multilane two-way roads via a single installation external to the roadway. For the traffic data of a radar detector to be representative of reliable data, the error factors of the radar detector must be analyzed. This study presents a field survey of variables that may cause errors in traffic volume collection by targeting the points where radar detectors are installed. Video traffic data are used to determine the errors in traffic measured by a radar detector. This study establishes three types of radar detector traffic errors, i.e., artificial, mechanical, and complex errors. Among these types, it is difficult to determine the cause of the errors due to several complex factors. To solve this problem, this study developed a radar detector traffic volume error analysis model using a multiple linear regression model. The results indicate that the characteristics of the detector, road facilities, geometry, and other traffic environment factors affect errors in traffic volume detection.
Ridge regression is compared with multiple linear regression (MLR) for determination of Research Octane Number (RON) when the baseline and signal-to-noise ratio are varied. MLR analysis of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic data usually encounters a collinearity problem, which adversely affects long-term prediction performance. The collinearity problem can be eliminated or greatly improved by using ridge regression, which is a biased estimation method. To evaluate the robustness of each calibration, the calibration models developed by both calibration methods were used to predict RONs of gasoline spectra in which the baseline and signal-to-noise ratio were varied. The prediction results of a ridge calibration model showed more stable prediction performance as compared to that of MLR, especially when the spectral baselines were varied. . In conclusion, ridge regression is shown to be a viable method for calibration of RON with the NIR data when only a few wavelengths are available such as hand-carry device using a few diodes.

In this paper, we propose a method to identify multiple outliers in regression analysis with only assumption of smoothness on the regression function. Our method uses single-linkage clustering algorithm and Projection Pursuit Regression (PPR). It was compared with existing methods using several simulated and real examples and turned out to be very useful in regression problem with the regression function which is far from linear.
