Through this thesis, I wanted to understand the form of free indirect discourse of modern films. To this end, I first explored the notion of the polyphonie as a mixture of the speaker and the character' voice in order to establish a concept related to free indirect discourse. However, I could not overlook the differences in the form of novels and movies to apply the following theory to films. Based on the concept of narrative distance, I sought to explore the possibility of free indirect discourse from the dual position of the camera. Next, I introduced the concept of free indirect discourse in the film by introducing the concept of Time in G. Deleuze' CinemaII. In other words, the time from Deleuze is the past and the present cycle, and he sees the Time circulating like the Non-Euclidean space. I wanted to understand the form of free indirect discourse in films by analyzing the concept of Time as an analysis of the movie .

The configuration analysis for the image appeared in the storyboard as the 1st stage to change the scenario to the image expressed the visual phenomenon image starting from the literalism. The simultaneity of description on the interpretative level of the narrative description may describe various information multiple simultaneously, the relationship has been presented as a lot of these information has been weaved as one episode. The incident time of narrative description as the scene described mainly objectively and illustratively has been used usefully to present the accurate information for characters or incidents. The time series of narrative description appeared as one episode by expressing various spaces or images under the continuity of flow according to the time. The collision image seen from the angle of internal ignition played a role to create the meaning colliding into each other or interconnecting symbolic effects appeared as respectively fragmented image, the continuity of space played a role of expressing the different symbol when the image of completely different space is connected to one context, the continuity of time as well makes a different symbolism by interpreting symbols appeared as each images under the flow of time. These results show that the narrative description may be expressed in accordance with the narrative structure from the viewpoints of narrative description, but the internal ignition may be interpreted through the cultural and periodical background widely known in those years based on the experience and information capability the audiences are keeping not by any descriptive structure. Images appeared in the internal ignition appeared by colliding into each other or amplifying mutually no related scenes and revealing the overall symbolism by reinterpreting again.

In this article, the narrative strategy of Ryusuke Hamaguchi's is researched focusing on multi-layered intertextuality. is framed in the form of a 'story in a story that embraces a story', and the recognition of intertextuality has an important meaning in examining the storytelling strategy of . Because this movie was adapted from the short stories from Haruki's , the various stories included in the film overlap to form the overall narrative. Therefore, in order to understand properly, it is important to understand the organic semantic relationship between the texts in the movie. Understanding the narrative of is also the process of interconnecting textual content of multiple texts included in the film. In , the dream story told by Otto, Gafuku's wife, the main character, and in the play are elaborately linked to the narrative of the entire film in layers and three dimensions with text in a frame. Hamaguchi reinforces the need for the audience through the intertextual narrative strategy of . In addition, the metaphor and personalized space of contributes to the effective delivering the narrative of healing to the audience.

When W. E. B. Du Bois says that "the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line," such a statement clearly recognizes the significance of the issue of racial identity, a cultural phenomenon called 'passing.' Both Johnson in The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man and Larsen in Passing confront this issue. Both novels, using the metaphor of passing, not only trace the racial anxiety and race politics of the time but also expose the unstable landscape of the established social and cultural boundaries of racial identity. Mapping out multiple meanings and various dimensions of passing, this paper argues how Johnson's and Larsen's narratives display the ambivalence of color line while they at the same time complicate, problematize, and destabilize the mainstream racial boundaries and differences. It furthers to delineate how the two writers, with difference, deal with the problem of passing, the significance of racial identity, and black middle class values along with its intraracial differences. Rather than draw a clear definition of and a definitive closure on passing narrative, this paper focuses on its complexities and undecidability, challenging every dimension of its established significations. It also explores the complex dynamic between passing act and individual identity, for passing here is not just a racially signified term but extends its significance to the other factors of identity, such as class and even sexuality. Johnson and Larsen open up a site for a newly emergent, modern racial identity for black middle class in the twentieth century American urban spaces. Both writers, illuminating the subversive and slippery nature of language in their passing narrative, clearly herald new, different forms of Afro-American writings and themes for the different century they face.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the most unique joints in the human body that orchestrates complex movements across different orthogonal planes and multiple axes of rotation. Comprising the articular eminence of the temporal bone and the condylar process of the mandible, the TMJ integrates five major ligaments, retrodiscal tissues, nerves, and blood and lymph systems to facilitate its function. Cooperation between the contralateral TMJ and masticatory muscles is essential for coordinated serial dynamic functions. During mouth opening, the TMJ exhibits a hinge movement, followed by gliding. The health of the masticatory system, which is intricately linked to chewing, energy intake, and communication, has become increasingly crucial with advancing age, exerting an impact on oral and systemic health and overall quality of life. For individuals to lead a healthy and pain-free life, a comprehensive understanding of the basic anatomy and functional aspects of the TMJ and masticatory muscles is imperative. Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) encompass a spectrum of diseases and disorders associated with changes in the structure, function, or physiology of the TMJ and masticatory system. Functional and pathological alterations in the TMJ and masticatory muscles can be visualized using various imaging modalities, such as cone-beam computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and bone scans. An exploration of potential pathophysiological mechanisms related to the TMJ anatomy contributes to a comprehensive understanding of TMD and informs targeted treatment strategies. Hence, this narrative review presents insights into the fundamental functional anatomy of the TMJ and pathological changes that evolve with TMD progression.

This study has examined, first of all, one of unique characteristics of picturebook, so-called dual audience. To be more exact, this paper aimed at exploring the flexibility of picturebooks that allows both of children and adult reader to enjoy them. For this, we analysed Piggybook by Anthony Browne that so far has been read as a traditional picturebook with a single distinctive narrative rather than as a postmodern picturebook with multiple narratives, centering on paradox and irony. The results of this study were as fallows: Piggybook has the potential of multiple readings and meanings for a variety of audiences. Above all, this picturebook raises not only the question about the gender roles but also the one about representation of reality through the language.

The origin of texts we refer to as literary or artistic may be imagination, but many are based on experiences. In fact, experiences can be the source of artistic imagination since imagination often builds upon experiences. Therefore, the act of verbalizing human experiences using them as raw material can become a great form of art. Transforming past experiences into stories and infusing them with vitality inevitably requires a creative process of reconstruction, which is essentially a literary process. As such, 'Personal Narrative' holds significance as a literary process that weaves facts into stories and shapes them into forms. Individual experiences are stored as personal memories, and these 'personal memories' continuously generate stories. Collections of individual stories are stored as multiple memories, which gradually form 'collective memories' with distinct social and cultural inclinations through the passage of time and invisible yet potent societal and cultural censorship. The problem lies in the fact that individuals may tend to align their own memories with the inclinations of collective memory rather than simply recalling what they personally experienced. In the context of actual history, personal memories and collective memories communicate with each other, producing non-fictional content close to reality and sometimes manifesting as fiction content enriched with imagination. 'Personal Narrative' holds a significant genre as one genre of non-fiction content within our culture.

Indeterminacy, along with the traces of the unknown identity V, plays a crucial role in building a new possibility in the narrative V. While the characters search for the single identity of V, Pynchon never lets readers and critics reach any final destination or goal in analyzing the novel. Exploring the multiple possibilities and meanings of life, the characters merely keep traveling and searching, without ever reaching any final conclusion or destination. The journey without ever reaching a final destination equals going beyond the boundary and embracing the margins of various possibilities. It concerns the Others and breaks off the hierarchy of Western metaphysics, which is quite similar to what the theorists of deconstruction seek to do. The search without ever reaching a final destination not only designates the multifarious aspect of truth, but it also suggests the possibility of the multiple meanings of words that the characters create. Just as their stories are abundant, the meaning that they produce with their stories can be open-ended. The notion of indeterminacy and broadness in this text, which can be well explained by Derrida, makes it possible for one to search for something other than the fixed meanings or truth claims. The text becomes multifarious in meaning as well as in structure, thus rejecting any kind of singular signifying act.

The extent and depth of the event plan determines the scope of pedagogical experience in situations and consequently the quality of immersive learning based on our simulated world. In contrast to planning in conventional narrative-based systems mainly pursuing dramatic interests, planning in virtual world-based pedagogical systems strive to provide realistic experiences in immersed situations. Instead of story plot comprising predetermined situations, our inter-event planning method aims at simulating diverse situations that each involve multiple events coupled via their associated agents' conditions and meaningful associations between events occurring in a background world. The specific techniques to realize our planning method include, two-phase planning based on inter-event search and intra-event decomposition (down to the animated action level); autonomous and independent agents to behave proactively with their own belief and planning capability; full-blown background world to be used as the comprehensive stage for all events to occur in; coupling events via realistic association types including deontic associations as well as conventional causality; separation of agents from event roles; temporal scheduling; and parallel and concurrent event progression mechanism. Combining all these techniques, diverse exogenous events can be derived and seamlessly (i.e., semantically meaningfully) integrated with the original event to form a wide scope of situations providing chances of abundant pedagogical experiences. For effective implementation of plan execution, we devise an execution scheme based on multiple priority queues, particularly to realize concurrent progression of many simultaneous events to simulate its corresponding reality. Specific execution mechanisms include modeling an action in terms of its component motions, adjustability of priority for agent across different events, and concurrent and parallel execution method for multiple actions and its expansion for multiple events.

This introduction is both a statement of a research problem and an account of the first research results for its solution. As more historical databases come online and overlap in coverage, we need to discuss the two main issues that prevent 'big' results from emerging so far. Firstly, historical data are seen by computer science people as unstructured, that is, historical records cannot be easily decomposed into unambiguous fields, like in population (birth and death records) and taxation data. Secondly, machine-learning tools developed for structured data cannot be applied as they are for historical research. We propose a complex network, narrative-driven approach to mining historical databases. In such a time-integrated network obtained by overlaying records from historical databases, the nodes are actors, while thelinks are actions. In the case study that we present (the world as seen from Venice, 1205-1533), the actors are governments, while the actions are limited to war, trade, and treaty to keep the case study tractable. We then identify key periods, key events, and hence key actors, key locations through a time-resolved examination of the actions. This tool allows historians to deal with historical data issues (e.g., source provenance identification, event validation, trade-conflict-diplomacy relationships, etc.). On a higher level, this automatic extraction of key narratives from a historical database allows historians to formulate hypotheses on the courses of history, and also allow them to test these hypotheses in other actions or in additional data sets. Our vision is that this narrative-driven analysis of historical data can lead to the development of multiple scale agent-based models, which can be simulated on a computer to generate ensembles of counterfactual histories that would deepen our understanding of how our actual history developed the way it did. The generation of such narratives, automatically and in a scalable way, will revolutionize the practice of history as a discipline, because historical knowledge, that is the treasure of human experiences (i.e. the heritage of the world), will become what might be inherited by machine learning algorithms and used in smart cities to highlight and explain present ties and illustrate potential future scenarios and visionarios.
