  • A transformerless converter suitable for multiphase drive application is presented in this paper. The topology employs a cascaded H-bridge rectifier as the interface between the grid and multi inverters which drive the multiphase motor. Compared with the conventional structure, the new topology eliminates the input transformer and also has the advantages such as four quadrant operation, simple configuration, low cost, high efficiency, and so on. The control strategies for the grid-side cascade H-bridge rectifier and the motor-side inverter are studied accordingly. Based on the multi-rotational reference frame, modular control scheme is developed to regulate the multiphase drive system. Simulation results show the proper operation of the proposed topology and the corresponding control strategy.

  • At present among the most important problems in the field of traction systems of railway vehicles are the following: 1) the minimization of the mass-and-overall dimensions of the drive systems; 2) the increase of the drive systems reliability and obtaining their higher fault-tolerance abilities; 3) the minimization of the motion speed pulsations and its oscillations, etc. The results of the researches received by the authors of this paper show that the use of the multiphase (i.e. having the number of phases more than four) inverter-fed induction motors in these traction systems is the most effective way of solving the above mentioned problems. In this case the motion speed oscillations can be decreased only by the increase of the drive phase number without any change in the inverter control algorithm. In addition, the application of some non-traditional control methods in the multiphase asynchronous traction drive system of a railway vehicle allows to decrease the mass-and-overall dimensions of the system and to improve its reliability and some other technical-and economic characteristics.

  • This paper proposes a hybrid-boost Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) for the Medium-Voltage (MV) Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) employed in subsea applications, such as oil and gas recovery. In the presented architecture, a hybrid-boost MMC with a reduced number of semiconductor devices driving a multiphase Induction Machine (IM) is investigated. The stepped output voltage generated by the MMC reduces or eliminates the filtering requirements. Moreover, the boosting capability of the proposed architecture eliminates the need for bulky low-frequency transformers at the converter output terminals. A detailed illustration of the hybrid-boost MMC operation, the expected limitations/constraints, and the voltage balancing technique are presented. A simulation model of the proposed MV hybrid-boost MMC-based five-phase IM drive has been built to investigate the system performance. Finally, a downscaled prototype has been constructed for experimental verification.

  • This paper presents a digital hardware implementation of a real-time simulator for a multiphase drive using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) device. The simulator was developed with a modular and hierarchical design using very high-speed integrated circuit hardware description language (VHDL). Hence, this simulator is flexible and portable. A state-space representation model suitable for FPGA implementations was proposed for a dual three-phase induction machine (DTPIM). The simulator also models a two-level 12-pulse insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT)-based voltage-source converter (VSC), a pulse-width modulation scheme, and a measurement system. Real-time simulation outputs (stator currents and rotor speed) were validated under steady-state and transient conditions using as reference an experimental test bench based on a DTPIM with 15 kW-rated power. The accuracy of the proposed digital hardware implementation was evaluated according to the simulation and experimental results. Finally, statistical performance parameters were provided to analyze the efficiency of the proposed DTPIM hardware implementation method.

  • The voltage-source inverters (VSI) supplying a motor drive are prone to open transistor faults. To address this issue in fault-tolerant drives applicable to electric vehicles, a new open transistor fault diagnosis (FD) method is presented in this paper. According to the proposed method, in order to define the FD index, the phase angle of the converter output current is estimated by a simple trigonometric function. The proposed FD method is adaptable, simple, capable of detecting multiple open switch faults and robust to load operational variations. Keeping the FD in mind as a mandatory part of the fault tolerant control algorithm, the FD block is applied to a five-phase converter supplying a multiphase fault-tolerant PM motor drive with non-sinusoidal unbalanced current waveforms. To investigate the performance of the FD technique, the fault-tolerant sliding mode control (SMC) of a five-phase brushless direct current (BLDC) motor is developed in this paper with the embedded FD block. Once the theory is explained, experimental waveforms are obtained from a five-phase BLDC motor to show the effectiveness of the proposed FD method. The FD algorithm is implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA).

  • In this paper an effective direct torque control (DTC) and stator flux control is developed for a quasi six-phase induction motor (QIM) drive with sinusoidally distributed windings. Combining sliding-mode (SM) control and adaptive input-output feedback linearization, a nonlinear controller is designed in the stationary reference frame, which is capable of tracking control of the stator flux and torque independently. The motor controllers are designed in order to track a desired second order linear reference model in spite of motor resistances mismatching. The effectiveness and capability of the proposed method is shown by practical results obtained for a QIM supplied from a voltage source inverter (VSI).

  • This paper presents for the torque characteristics and improving the efficiency of driving system of electric bicycle which applied IEWPM(Independently Excited Winding Permanent Magnet) motor. IEWPM motor can expand the number of phase from 3 phases to multiphase like SRM motor because stator windings are unconnected directly. BLDC motor raise rotor'-s electromagnetic torque per unit volume by using Spoke type permanent magnet. By using two photo sensor per phase and applying excited width, advance angle and bipolar control, we confirmed higher torque at a low speed, higher out-put at a high speed, and efficiency improvement at a wide speed control area.

  • Compared to a multiphase SRM, a single-phase SRM has some advantages, such as lower number of switches and power converter size, which leads to gradually increasing in the household appliances and industrial applications. But the torque dead zone is existed in the single-phase SRM which decreases the starting capability of the motor and increases the torque ripple. In order to solve the aforementioned problems, a single-phase hybrid SRM with commercial ferrite permanent magnet is proposed in this paper. Basic design principle for the proposed structure is described. To verify the proposed structure, FEM is employed to get the characteristics of the proposed structure. Based on the analysis, a prototype is designed and manufactured. And, the experimental system is also constructed. The validity of the proposed structure is verified by the experimental results.
