This paper presents a multimedia streaming platform for efficiently transmitting MPEG-4 content over IP networks. The platform includes an MPEG-4 compliant streaming server and client, supporting object-based representation of multimedia scenes, interactivity, and advanced encoding profiles defined by the ISO standard. For scalability purposes, we employ an application-layer multicast scheme for media transmission using overlay networks. The overlay network, governed by the central entity of the network distribution manager, is dynamically deployed according to a set of pre-defined criteria. The overlay network supports both broadcast delivery and video-on-demand content. The multimedia streaming platform is standards-compliant and utilizes widespread multimedia protocols such as MPEG-4, real-time transport protocol, real-time transport control protocol, and real-time streaming protocol. The design of the overlay network was architected with the goal of transparency to both the streaming server and the client. As a result, many commercial implementations that use industry-standard protocols can be plugged into the architecture relatively painlessly and can enjoy the benefits of the platform.
New multimedia services over the cellular/WLAN overlay networks require different Quality of Service (QoS). Therefore, efficient network management system is necessary in order to provide QoS sensitive multimedia services while enhancing network performance. In this paper, we propose a new online network management scheme that implements bandwidth reservation, congestion and transmission control strategies. Our online approach to network management exhibits dynamic adaptability, flexibility, and responsiveness to the current traffic conditions in multimedia overlay networks. Simulation results indicate the superior performance of our proposed scheme to strike the appropriate performance balance between contradictory QoS requirements under widely varying diverse traffic loads.

The demand for multimedia streaming services is increasing rapidly. To meet this demand, there has been much research and many practical developments for providing multimedia services. A push-to-talk (PTT) service is one of the multimedia streaming services that have been deployed not only over IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) but also in peer-to-peer (P2P) overlay networks. The benefit of PTT has been demonstrated in the literature. However, the need for using PTT service in communication can be arbitrary among users, regardless what kind of PTT services they use. This demand does not support current PTT systems, so an expansion of PTT services still be limited. Moreover, the combination of PTT services in IMS and P2P networks will help operators to provide more scalable PTT services. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed a model to support PTT service interworking between IMS and P2P overlay networks. We also introduced our system design and some interworking service scenarios. We confirmed our architecture through implementation and testing.
New multimedia services over the cellular/WLAN overlay networks require different Quality of Service (QoS). In the cellular/WLAN overlay structure, the main issue of load balancing is to balance the available bandwidth among different networks. In this paper, we propose a new online network management scheme. Our proposed scheme is designed to improve bandwidth utilization by balancing the traffic load between the cellular network and WLANs. Simulation results indicate the superior performance of our proposed framework to strike the appropriate performance balance between contradictory QoS requirements under widely varying diverse traffic loads.

High-quality multimedia on the Internet has attracted attention because of its wide application area. IP multicast has been proposed as a solution to use efficient network resources in these services. However, IP multicast has not been commonly used due to a number of practical issues such as security and management. As an alternative, an overlay multicast routing which is performed in upper protocol layers on legacy networks without changing hardware has been presented. Yet, the maximum data transmission capacity of the overlay multicast is not sufficient for real time transmission of multimedia data. In this paper, we have implemented an overlay multicast engine on NetFPGA which allows us to perform packet replication and tunneling which need high-speed. In addition, we have implemented extra portions which need low-speed in software. From now on, we will progress research which increase the number of terminal spots which can be replicated by improvement and amplify throughputs by optimization.

As recent integration of wire and wireless networks and the convergence of telecommunications and broadcasting, uniform and standardized by the broadcasting operators of existing stations to provide 4A(Any-time, Any-where, Any-device, Any-contents) services for the next-generation of multimedia services research is being progressed. Demand for theses next-generation multimedia services to ensure video compression coding technology, as well as mobility, ability to operation a variety of devices, characteristics and performance of user network and the status and conditiion, user preferences and context-awareness based on the technology has an interest in technical studies. In this paper, the current internet environment, SVC(Scalable Video Coding) encoded by a mixture of multicast and overlay multicast transmission technology for broadcasting services by designing and efficient multimedia broadcasting system is proposed. In addition, ACK-Aow Optimization by overlay multicast scheme existing tree-based overlay multicast, and by comparing the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated.

Research on 4A(Any-time, Any-where, Any-device, Any-contents) services for the next-generation multimedia services is developed with the trend of the integration of wire and wireless networks and the convergence of telecommunications and broadcasting. In this paper we proposed a design of SVC(Scalable Video Coding) overlay multicast mechanism which can provide typical next-generation multimedia services such as SVC streaming. A novel overlay multicast algorithm called ACK-Flow tree optimization algorithm is proposed to guarantee SVC streaming with high efficiency.

Today the various types of communication and application service are provided by the development of Internet and IP technologies. It is expected to be extended the service domain of two networks through the interconnecting P2PSIP overlay which is highlighted as an important technologies for Internet based services and IMS(IP Multimedia Subsystem) which is the new architecture adopted in the evolution of NGN. Therefore, this paper explains the possible methods of the service expansion with interconnecting P2PSIP overlay and IMS network. Specially this paper suggests the interconnection architectures of P2PSIP overlay and IMS network as subscriber's types and analyzes the traffic analysis model and session set up delay characteristics by simulation model. As a results, this paper shows that the interconnection architecture using gateway AS(Application Server) is the excellent method to interconnect the IMS in case of P2PSIP overlay only subscriber, and that interconnection architecture using I-CSCF is good method to interconnect the IMS in case of P2PSIP overlay and IMS subscriber.

Recently, many researches on P2P overlay network-based multimedia streaming services have been actively performed because of their high scalability and cost-efficiency advantages. However, P2P overlay networks also have the shortcoming of generating higher traffic owing to their unicast-based one-to-many multimedia deliveries. In order to reduce the traffic generated by the P2P streaming overlay network, we propose an ISP and locality-based parent node discovery method and check its feasibility through an implementation of a prototype streaming system. The measurement of RTTs and hop counts for random nodes having different ISPs and localities shows the proposed method to be able to shorten about 32% RTTs and about 17% Hop counts.

Recently, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) overlay networks like CAN, Chord, Pastry and Tapestry offer a novel platform for scalable and decentralized distributed applications. These systems provide efficient and fault-tolerant routing, object location, and load balancing within a self-organizing overlay network. Content Delivery Network (CDN) is an intermediate layer of infrastructure that helps to efficiently deliver the multimedia content from content providers to clients. In this paper, We propose a topology-aware P2P overlay network for CDN, Rosary, in which CDN servers perform Intra-Pastry and Inter-Pastry routing based on a two-level structured overlay network. This proposed system extends pastry by adapting itself to CDN environments, where a semi-hashing based scheme for Intra-Pastry routing is introduced, and dynamic landmark technology is used to construct the topology-aware overlay network. Through simulations on NS-2, it is shown that Rosary is scalable, efficient, and flexible.
