The current multihome-aware protocols (like stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) or parallel TCP for concurrent multipath data transfer (CMT) are not designed for high-capacity and large-latency networks; they often have performance problems transferring large data files over shared long-distance wide area networks. It has been shown that SCTP-CMT is more sensitive to receive buffer (rbuf) constraints, and this rbuf-blocking problem causes considerable throughput loss when multiple paths are used simultaneously. In this research paper, we demonstrate the weakness of SCTP-CMT rbuf constraints, and we then identify that rbuf-blocking problem in SCTP multihoming is mostly due to its loss-based nature for detecting network congestion. We present a simulation-based performance comparison of FAST TCP versus SCTP in high-speed networks for solving a number of throughput issues. This work proposes an end-to-end transport layer protocol (i.e., FAST TCP multihoming as a reliable, delaybased, multihome-aware, and selective ACK-based transport protocol), which can transfer data between a multihomed source and destination hosts through multiple paths simultaneously. Through extensive ns-2 simulations, we show that FAST TCP multihoming achieves the desired goals under a variety of network conditions. The experimental results and survey presented in this research also provide an insight on design decisions for the future high-speed multihomed transport layer protocols.

This paper describes a theoretical framework for rate allocation to maximize the power efficiency of overall heterogeneous wireless networks whose users are assumed to have multihoming capabilities. Therefore, the paper first presents a power consumption model considering the circuit power and radio transmission power of each wireless network. Using this model, two novel power efficient rate allocation schemes (PERAS) for multihoming services are proposed. In this paper, the convex optimization problem for maximizing the power efficiency over wireless networks is formulated and solved while guaranteeing the required quality of service (QoS). Here, both constant bit rate and variable bit rate services are considered. Furthermore, we extend our theoretical framework by considering the sleep-operation management of wireless networks. The performance results obtained from numerical analysis reveal that the two proposed schemes offer superior performance over the existing rate allocation schemes for multihoming services and guarantee the required QoS.

Multihoming is an attractive feature for mobile nodes (MN) equipped with multiple network interfaces in a converged networking environment. However, the current standard Mobile IP (MIP) lacks support for multihomed MNs. Accordingly, this paper presents an immediate solution to resolve the problems of multihomed MNs in a UMTS and WLAN interworking system. The interworking system is based on a hierarchical architecture according to the UMTS and WLAN coverage characteristics. The MIP is only operated in the WLANs, and not in the UMTS, allowing the MIP to be used for multihomed MNs with minimal modifications. In addition, MIP binding filters are used to realize the advantages of multihoming, enabling different traffic flows to be transmitted simultaneously through different interfaces. The overall design aims to minimize the modification to the MIP and impact on existing UMTS and WLAN systems. We evaluate the performance of proposed scheme using an OPNET simulator.

A multihomed enterprise or AS(Autonomous System) improves reliability and performance by acquiring its Internet connectivity from more than two ISP(Internet Service Provider). Multihoming protocol must allow a multihomed site whose connectivity through one of the ISPs fails to keep its Internet connectivity As one of mechanisms to do this, tunneling mechanism through Non-direct EBGP(Exterior Border Gateway Protocol) is defined. This mechanism makes connectivity to the Internet more reliable, but causes the problem that makes the communication route non-optimal. In this paper, we propose the route optimization mechanism using an extension header in the IPv6 multihoming environment.

Recently, more and more portable terminals probably have multiple interfaces to be connected to different access technologies. Each technology has its specific characteristics in terms of coverage area, bandwidth, reliability, etc. For example, the mobile node is equipped with three heterogeneous interfaces; IEEE 802.1lb MLAM link, CDMA Cellular link, and 802.16 WiMAX link These mobile nodes may be reachable through different links at the same time or use each interface alternately depending on the network environment. As like this, the portable terminal equipped multiple interfaces can have many benefits; it should be connect to Internet through other interface in case of occurring to failure for currently activate interface, and it should share a mount of traffic efficiently per interface etc. This environment is called end node Multihoming. However, current most Internet protocols are designed originally with single interface in mind. So these potocols do not provide methods for supporting simultaneous diffentiated use of multiple access technologies. In this paper, firstly we have to refer technical consideration items to use multiple interfaces based on IPv6 simultaneously. And we should propose extended registration mechanism for multiple addresses being acquired from interfaces to support reliable accessibility and vertical handover.

This paper describes a mechanisms for IPv6 multihomming with loadsharing broker, focusing on the interdomain scalability and load sharing with redundancy on IPv6 networks. Unlike currently-practiced IPv4 multihoming, this model does not impact the worldwide routing table size, also it provides inbound load sharing at site level based on router renumbering, and multiple-prefix assigning techniques of IPv6. The proposed model has four modules such as building interfaces MIB module, priority list maintaining module, load detection module, and RRP configuration module.

The Stream Control Transmission Protocol(SCTP) is a reliable transport layer protocol that provides several features. Multihoming is the one of the features and allows an association(SCTP's term for a connection) between two endpoints to use multiple paths. One of the paths, called a primary path, is used for initial data transmission and in the case of retransmission an alternate path is used. SCTP's current retransmission policy attempts to improve the chance of success by sending all retransmissions to an alternate destination address. However, SCTP's current retransmission policy has been shown to actually degrade performance in many circumstances. It is because that, due to Karn's algorithm, successful retransmissions on the alternate path cannot be used to update RTT(Round-Trip Time) estimation for the alternate path. In this paper we propose a scheme to avoid such performance degradation. We utilize 2bits which is not used in the flag field of DATA and SACK chunks to disambiguate original transmissions from retransmissions and to keep RTT and RTO(Retransmission Time-Out) values more accurate.
